Rally Around Miss California’s Crown

What happens when a judge asks a beauty pageant contestant in front of a live television audience her opinion about a political question? If you answered that the contestant risks her crown if she gives anything other than the liberal-approved answer, you would be right.

That is what is happening right now to Miss California USA 2009 Carrie Prejean after liberal internet gossip maven Perez Hilton asked her, during the Miss USA competition this past Sunday, whether she thought gay marriage should be made legal nationwide, and why. Hilton was obviously seeking to put Miss California on the spot for her state’s November vote for Proposition 8, which amended the California Constitution making gay marriage illegal. Hilton used the venue of the Miss USA pageant to sandbag the unsuspecting Prejean, who nevertheless courageously stated her belief that marriage should be between one man and one woman. The answer has launched a firestorm of controversy that has Miss California officials openly condemning Prejean for her beliefs, and hinting that she could lose her title because of them.

Prejean’s answer to Hilton’s question could not have been more apologetic. But it was not nearly enough for Hilton, and for Miss California officials, that she qualified her answer in terms of her own upbringing, expressed tolerance for other viewpoints, and essentially threw herself on the mercy of the court.

“I think it’s great Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what in my country, in my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be, between a man and a woman.”

Clearly, Ms. Prejean was a bit flustered by the pressure of being asked such a sensitive question in front of a live audience and on live television. But she rebounded beautifully, and much more importantly, she spoke her convictions.

Hilton was not impressed. On his website that night, he called Prejean, ” a dumb b—-.” He has since apologized, and retracted his apology. He says he was “floored” by Prejean’s answer, and believes – no doubt happily – that it cost her the title of Miss USA.

“She lost it because of that question. She was definitely the front-runner before that,” Hilton said, adding that he’s “very happy with whom the judges chose,” Miss North Carolina’s Kristen Dalton.

For her part, Prejean appears to be taking the controversy in stride, just as she did having her hopes and dreams made a pawn of Hilton’s political agenda on national television.

“I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do. It is a very touchy subject and he [Perez] is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct. But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.”

Miss California organizers were aghast that they might have given the title to a woman of conviction, and threatened to dethrone her.

Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, released a statement to the media in response to Prejean’s answer last night.

“As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman,” said Lewis in a statement. “I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family.”

Co-director Shanna Moakler, the 1995 Miss USA, told the media that she fully supported Lewis’ statement.

Make no mistake, the liberals are coming for Miss California’s crown. The Miss California USA directors are no doubt pouring over the rules right now looking for some obscure technicality on which to base their baseless attacks. Or else, they will be looking for the first opportunity, the most minor of controversies or misunderstandings to justify their political discrimination. All because a young woman was asked to deny herself to win an honor. She refused to bow to liberal and politically correct orthodoxy, and now they must make an example of her.

Why does any of this matter? Because with liberals in power and emboldened, scenes like this will be playing out with greater and greater frequency over the next four years. As the Department of Homeland Security’s report on alleged “right-wing extremism” shows, there is a movement afoot to marginalize, if not outright criminalize, mainstream conservative beliefs. Wherever conservatives see a public figure bravely standing against the liberal onslaught, they must rally. Prejean, and the reckoning that is coming for her, provides just such an opportunity, and from the unlikliest of places.

Miss California Carrie Prejean’s act of courage – in the face of tremendous pressure to spout the liberal line – serves as a fine example for young and more seasoned conservative politicians. First be true to your beliefs, and let the chips fall where they may. When they do, they should know that conservatives of like mind across the country will stand up for them.

Since Mr. Trump took over this increasingly irrelevant Miss USA pageant, he has done his best to gin up controversy and buzz for this show.

His production team hired this Perez Hilton toad as a judge. Even the most casual observer, armed with Google, should see that Perez Hilton is a slimy pop culture cockroach. The pageant approved his question and he delivered his trash act on national television.

Miss California, even with the blindside hit, gave a thoughtful, cogent, and heartfelt response. She expressed her personal view without being intolerant to others. Her demonstrated conviction, even when at risk to lose the crown should be applauded. That seems like poise to me.

With an attitude like this, in one so young, only great things are in store for her. She didn’t win Mr. Trump’s Miss USA crown, but I think she achieved so much more. I’m sure a lot of people admire you. I know this lib does. Go, Carrie Prejean!

I don’t think they should be abusing the poor woman for stating her convictions, but it was not thoughtful or cogent. In fact, it didn’t really make very much sense (no, you don’t have the right to ‘choose’ same-sex marriage, that was the whole point of the question).

‘In my country?’ What was she even talking about here? Did she mean state?

Saying this woman is thoughtful and intelligent makes us look like idiots. Let’s be honest; the lady may have a good heart, and good morals, but she’s no Einstein, and NOT a good public speaker.

      • Aaron Gardner

in context to what she is and the abilities of her peers…she actually gave a pretty intelligent answer….now if she was running for office…that would be different.

Either way the point is that she is being attacked for taking the more conservative position of Marriage being defined as between one man and one woman…not because she didn’t answer well.

I think you knew that though.

        • DONTREADONME

it is a beauty pageant, the added the question to please the liberal women of the country, not the men, though her standing on her belief did send a tingle up my leg, yes I am straight, I apologize Eve, she did.

persecuted, I mean she is being persecuted at her job or profession because of her Christian belief. She wasn’t a coward when it was between giving a Christian answer and a potentional title she worked hard for, now she might lose the title she had already won.

      • LibRick

I heard a person that answered honestly within the context of the circumstances. You choose to parse the words of a 21 year old person answering a question, live and on national television. I doubt you could live up to the standard you expect others to.

I don’t judge my own idiot quotient based on a young woman’s ability to make a “cogent” response to a question. Apparently you do. Perhaps, you might need a “time-out” for introspection. Don’t worry, I won’t prejudge you as less than Einstein, or a bad writer.

…as a liberal who stands on principle rather than expediency – that’s what liberalism was about when I was growing up before it got hijacked.

In those days, the liberal methodology was unfettered debate. Unfortunately, the left today seems focused on shouting down or silencing opposing viewpoints as the way to effect hope and change. In so doing, they are traveling down the well-beaten path to tyranny.

So welcome here. I think you will find that we at RedState welcome and respect reasoned argument (keeping in mind the purposes of this site).

  • E Pluribus Unum

She is going to get shelled by the media, have her personal life inspected, and anything that can be used to embarrass her or shame her, or counter her message, they will front-page on all the news.

We can’t necessarily keep that from happening. But we can shout loudly that we respect and embrace her. Somebody needs to champion her, show her some right-blog love and right-media love.

Although Bill O’Reilly’s not really a conservative at all, this is exactly the sort of thing that he likes. If he’s not covering this, somebody with his ear should get his attention on it. He’s got a pretty impressive following.

We should also be shouting down all the reporters who smear her. They’ve all got dirt, and we should publish that.

Let’s just leave it at “enlightened” for know.

          • Aaron Gardner

            As to conservatism…lets do a quick test…

Do you believe in the concept of Federalism?

Do you believe in in a limited Fed Gov’t?

Do you believe in a Social Safety Net for only the truly needy?

Do you believe in a strong National Defense?

Do you believe that Social Issues should be handled at the lowest possible level of Gov’t..(i.e. state, county)?

If you answered yes to these then you are well on your way to conservatism….understanding though that doesn’t equate to Republican.

          • LibRick

I took your test. and it was a thought provoking exercise. Here’s a short response, as each of your questions could be explored in volumes.

Do you believe in the concept of Federalism?

Yes — if Federalism is defined and applied as a central government and state government compact with enumerated responsibility. I do not agree with some definitions of Federalism that advocate an overarching Federal pre-eminence, nor do I agree with the notion that the State should have absolute sovereignty.

Do you believe in in a limited Fed Gov?t?

Yes, but “limited” as practically applied, is subjective. The devil is in the definition of those limits. The Constitution does set limits. but procedurally, the application of these limits has been argued since our founding. Ain’t that America!

Do you believe in a Social Safety Net for only the truly needy?

No — because “truly needy” is again, too subjective. I believe in a social obligation (safety net) to our young from conception to 18 yrs, to our elderly, those 65 and older, and to those that are disabled. Since everyone will pass through one or more of these constituencies at some point, then in the interim, if you are able-bodied, you are on your own.

Do you believe in a strong National Defense?

Yes — But…I recuse myself from going beyond that because I have a bias. I’m former military and have worked all my life in defense related companies.

Do you believe that Social Issues should be handled at the lowest possible level of Gov?t..(i.e. state, county)?

No — If those issues impinge on the protection of human equality and access.
Yes — If those issues are about the cultural interests of the community.

            So, there it is.

          • Aaron Gardner

And yes this exercise could easily expand into a diary….feel free to do just that..I think it would be a really good one…or at least get a lot of comments…;^)

I think you have a pretty good grasp of the concept of federalism….the simplified version being that whatever is not enumerated within the Constitution as Federal business defaults to the States.

Limited Gov’t….to me falls in line with the first questions answer…they are symbiotic so to speak.

Social safety net…for me we will support those who *can’t* support themselves…but those who *won’t* while still being able don’t need my money to get a leg up…they need my motivation.

National Defense…I am a Veteran too and have worked in Defense contracts until just recently…no reason to recuse yourself….so what if you happen to also benefit from you support for a strong defense.

Social issues…as long as no Constitutional rights are being violated..I say keep it at the lowest level giving the people who are most affected by it the power to influence it.

I don’t think we are that far apart…maybe just in the margins.

First, I thought liberals were against beauty pageants like this because they offend their feminist sensibilities. Therefore shouldn’t anything coming out of this event be completely irrelevant? Why even bother then? Personally, I wasn’t even aware the Miss USA pageant was still going on. But that changed today. The Miss USA people must be happier than pigs in slop at this turn of events, despite their public pronouncements. Talk about a shot in the arm. And another thing, for all their talk about Sarah Palin (another beauty pageant contestant,BTW), I find it surprising that they would want to elevated another stunningly beautiful, intelligent, and apparently outspoken conservative woman to national prominence. Thanks Pervez Hilton.

    • cannondale

I was so disappointed to hear about this whole thing that I didn’t take into account that it could be a blessing in disguise. I sure hope so.

    • ZootSuit

Kudos for saying “apparently” in your message above, let’s not be too quick to crown her a conservative. Outspoken? Definitely. Intelligent? Apparently (although “opposite marriage” was a flub). Beautiful? Yes (although I actually think Sarah Palin is better looking).

But as for her politics, we know nothing except that she personally does not support gay marriage. A position held by something like 75% of African-Americans in California who also enthusiastically supported Barack Obama. Being opposed to gay marriage does not automatically make someone a conservative.

      • Aaron Gardner

and the position is a conservative position, even though not all who support that position are “Conservatives”.

Exclusive: Carrie Prejean Says ‘God Was Testing My Faith’ With Gay Marriage Question
        http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,517228,00.html

If she wasn’t at least open to conservativism, why would she agree to an interview knowing their slant? Oh and where was precious CNN or MSNBC in the matter rushing to defend her or similarily interview her? I think we know that answer.

Not saying anything is saying everything

        • ZootSuit

First of all, for the record, I never sad that she was not a conservative. And for the record, I never said that her answer was not conservative.I am simply saying that her stance on gay marriage — which is laudable and which I agree with and what I do think is “conservative” — does not make her a conservative.

As I alluded to in my comments above, I know plenty of people who are pro-life and pro-marriage and are diehard, and often self-described, liberals. For eight years we have had to endure a pro-life liberal who tried to pass himself off as a conservative in the White House while we conservatives tried to pass him off as one of us. And for all our loyalty we got MediCare Part D and bank bailouts. And, for that matter, a real live socialist in the White House: as Michelle Malkin says, “Bush pre-socialized America for Obama.” Why are we so willing to rush headlong into possibly making those same mistakes again?

I do think the “social issues” are a very important part of conservatism but they alone neither define nor make someone a conservative!

but supporting traditional marriage does not make you a full blown conservative. On the other hand, very few liberals support such an idea.

          • its_a_right_wing_thing

She said “Me and my dad watch your show every night” and her sister who differs with her on issues like gay marriage have debates every once in a while when she is home (from the service I think). So it sounds like she definately leans conservative or is at least open to it.

  • simplysaid

Carrie Prejean’s gracefully worded answer to Perez Hilton’s culturally explosive question possibly sways opinion! How could this be? The main stream is condemned and the extremes are excused, heralded and applauded.
Will the back story be revealed tomorrow, as a set up by all to increase viewership, interest and debate?
No mattter. Once again it highlights the ever increasing divide between the right and the left. And where it all ends is just too frightening to imagine.

When i first heard her comment i was struck with how “conservative” the answer really was and not surprised at all as to why she is getting attacked so fiercely.

I see it as there being two levels to this, yes the gay marriage one, but there is the other level about freedom of choice.

THAT level is probably just as scary, if not more so, than the surface issue. She actually had the gall to tout the benefits of a representational republic and freedom of choice that hinted at a preference for States rights?

Its everything proponents of a “living” Constitution abhor. It reminded me of Scalia:

“”My Constitution is a very flexible Constitution. You think the death penalty is a good idea ? persuade your fellow citizens and adopt it. You think it?s a bad idea ? persuade them the other way and eliminate it. You want a right to abortion ? create it the way most rights are created in a democratic society, persuade your fellow citizens it?s a good idea and enact it. You want the opposite ? persuade them the other way. That?s flexibility”

Sure, i’m probably reading a lot into it but that was my first gut reaction and is why its such a scary reply, she’s a really good looking Scalia.

  • aesthete

I really love that she didn’t bow down at the altar of political correctness, when it’s much easier both intellectually and socially to follow the lead of the other “pretty people” who adopt these views. That, I think, is what really shone through (though I like her answer, as well).

  • DONTREADONME

you fit the stereotype that men have of women! Unfortunately, somewhere along the line appreciation of the woman and traditional womanhood has been ransacked by a bunch of realy ugly women. Now, I am not talking about superficial beauty, but a beauty that eminates from that internal confidence, honestly and yes femininity. News to the liberal women, you lack these traits, you come off selfish, thoughtless, and yes nagging. Sorry to break the news, but your act is pretty much an act of a woman uncomfortable in their skin; therefore, you decided that men should suffer in your misery that is what we call the double standard that has been instituted.

Next, Ms Perez Hilton, you act like the liberal woman, ugly, and whinny. Maybe, if you really want to attract that man you should take a note from Miss California and grow up. Pathetic, I am still fired up over this moo-ron today.

More news for liberal women, you know when men complain about their nagging wives or women they are talking about you. So deal with it. There i said it I must be a masculinist. What’s that you say, Ms liberal, I am a male chauvinist, well I am no different than a feminist. So, what you are saying is that you are a female chauvinist. Perez=self hating woman. Thank you for being honest and forthright as well as beautiful. You may have lost a title, but your spirit and determiation should carry you far in life and I wish only the best for you. As for Perez Hilton, there is not enough money in the world to make me approve or you or your beliefs. Personally, I could care less if a human wants to have an intimate relationship with a goat, but why the rest of us have to subscribe to this lunacy escapes me, and, I won’t. My only regret is that Perez’ mother and father didn’t pick same sex partners before they married and produced him. If the Liberals will stop trying to tell us how to live our lives long enough to realize that same sex unions produce no offspring and thus no tax payers to shell out the money to support their lavish lifestyles, they might think more positively about marriage between a man and a woman. I am still trying to figure out why this subject commands national attention. Having lived seventy-five years, never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that our nation would come to this. Further, how can we ever expect our relationship with the Islamic world to ever get any closer when they know we promote same sex marriage, which to them is an abomination of the lowest order. I wonder what Obama will answer when Ahmadinejad asks him if he believes in same sex marriage? Careful, Obama, you may lose your crown!

Official statement regarding miss ca usa 2009 final answer controversy

I am proud of Carrie Prejean?s beauty and placement at the 2009 MISS USA pageant. I support Carrie?s right to express her personal beliefs even if they do not coincide with my own. I believe the subject of gay marriage deserves a great deal more conversation in order to heal the divide it has created.

it appears someone was smacked down behind close doors for jumping the gun on the condemnation of Miss California. This official statement is exactly what I expected to hear from the Miss CA officials. Good for them, I commend them for coming out in support of her speaking her mind on a touchy subject that already had prejudice minds in the audience.
