Obama Met Secretly with Jeremiah Wright During the Camapign

Did Obama and Wright conspire to get Wright out of the news right under the media's nose?

Last May, in the heat of the Democratic primary and coming off of a disastrous showing in the Pennsylvania primary, Barack Obama reversed course and publicly denounced his controversial pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, after refusing to do so the month before. In his now famous Philadelphia speech on race relations, Obama said he could no more disown Wright than he could disown the black community. Wright then made an appearance at the National Press Club on April 28th, one week after the Pennsylvania primary, in which he refused to recant his controversial sermons, the revelation of which had brought pressure on the Obama campaign. Soon after, Obama would disown him, using the pretext of Wright’s affirmation of his sermons as the reason for his change of mind.

Wright disappeared from the campaign after that, disproving speculation that he was out to destroy Obama’s campaign out of anger at his former charge’s repudiation. At the time, I questioned whether it was all a set up. Did Obama and Wright conspire together to get Wright and the controversy surrounding Obama’s 20-year attendance at his Trinity United Church out of the news in advance of the crucial North Carolina and Indiana primaries? Now, there may be proof.

This is what I speculated on May 2nd, three days after Obama denounced his former pastor:

Here’s how the theory goes. When Wright’s controversial sermons…were made public, the Obama campaign took the occasion to have the candidate make a big speech on race relations. The speech was delivered in Philadelphia, the better to help Obama calm the fears of rural, white, working-class Democrats, to whom he now looked a little more like a sixties radical than an agent of a new kind of politics. It was expected that Obama would distance himself from his firebrand pastor. But he didn’t…Far from distancing himself, Obama drew closer to Wright. [...]

Obama lost Pennsylvania by 10 points on April 22nd…Faced with the sudden realization that his campaign was foundering among rural whites, and with four heavily rural states next to vote, Obama needed a way to reach out to that crucial Democratic demographic.

But for the post-partisan Obama to suddenly turn on his pastor, mentor, and friend of more than 20 years would have seemed too opportunistic, too old politics. He needed to find a way to denounce Wright without having it be seen as politically motivated. [...]

Less cynical observers say that the new Wright controversy is too damaging for Obama’s campaign to be a political ploy…But it has been three days since Obama’s dismissal of Wright, and there has been no word from the Reverend. If Wright remains silent through Monday, consider it a certainty that he is executing a plan designed to give Obama the political cover to opportunistically deny him. There may never be proof of coordination, but there seems to be a lot of winking and nodding going on.

In his forthcoming book on the 2008 campaign, Richard Wolfe reports that Obama and Wright met between the Pennsylvania and North Carolina primaries at Wright’s home in suburban Chicago. The Obama campaign set up the meeting with the express goal of getting Wright to end his public appearances. The meeting was not reported in the press.

Wolfe’s account of the discussion between the besieged pastor and the beleaguered candidate leaves plenty of questions. Wolfe says Obama, “adopt[ed] the tone of a concerned friend giving advice,” and tried to, “nudge [Wright] in the right direction by making him aware of what was about to happen.” The account is silent about whether the two men discussed the campaign. But coming off a loss in a heavily rural state, and heading into two more contests in heavily rural battleground states, is it really much of a stretch to surmise that Obama asked Wright to get out of the way?

The proof, of course, is that Wright did exactly that. He made no more public appearances after his National Press Club speech. There was no attempt to destroy Obama’s campaign. And thanks to Republican John McCain’s decision not to make Wright an issue, Obama did not have to face serious questions about his former pastor again during the campaign.

Complicit in this deception is the mainstream media, which clearly was not paying close enough attention to Obama to know of the meeting. Considering the intensity of the Wright story and the Democratic primary, the meeting would have been blockbuster news. Somehow, Obama was able to meet with the most controversial figure in the campaign, on the cusp of two critically important primaries, at his home, and not one media outlet reported on it.

All of this calls into question whether Obama was telling the truth in his embrace of Wright in Philadelphia, or in his denunciation of him the following month; and whether Wright’s National Press Club appearance and Obama’s subsequent distancing from him was part of a quid pro quo designed to allow Obama to appear more moderate without explicitly denying his radical preacher. Had news of the meeting been reported, that question may have been explored, at least in the conservative blogosphere. Instead, the public was deprived of the context necessary to make a true judgment about Obama’s relationship to Wright. But perhaps a clue to Obama’s motivations in both speeches can be found in the words of Wright himself.

“Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites, based on polls…He does what politicians do.”

"Complicit" is a good choice of words for the MSM

Complicit in this deception is the mainstream media, which clearly was not paying close enough attention to Obama to know of the meeting. Considering the intensity of the Wright story and the Democratic primary, the meeting would have been blockbuster news. Somehow, Obama was able to meet with the most controversial figure in the campaign, on the cusp of two critically important primaries, at his home, and not one media outlet reported on it.

Stories that threated to harm O were starved of oxygen. Another example: Obama’s promise that his adminstration would cause any new coal plant to be bankrupted. He said that to the SF Chronicle, which serves a community that doesn’t use much (if any) coal-generated power. But much of our country DOES rely on coal-generated power.

Wouldn’t a real professional journalist on the SF Chronicle staff, someone really dedicated to the ideal of journalism seeking truth and holding politicians accountable, have picked up the phone, called his colleagues in Pittsburgh or Cincinatti or Cleveland and said “Have you seen this?”

Here’s one thing we can do to help our R candidates in the 2010 election: give them data points like this, that will reinforce a narrative of an MSM committed to Democratic politics.

A large majority of Americans already distrust our MSM. They think its reporting is biased and its correspondents to be juvenile. That mindset is already established. The MSM “brand,” so to speak, is already badly tarnished.

That makes it easier for us. We don’t need to “win over” the majority of Americans on this issue: they already agree with us.

Instead, we can now simply offer, consistently, examples like this that reinforce the meme of MSM bias.

The 2010 campaign should be against the MSM AND the Democrats. We’re in a good position to do just that.

In this case, we don’t have to go out and say “See! Obama and Wright WERE coordinating their stories!” I’ll bet most Americans would yawn when they heard that “revelation” Obama saying one thing in public and doing another thing in private sound like the Chicago Way—what’s new about that?

The angle we should pursue, IMO, is this:

Somehow, Obama was able to meet with the most controversial figure in the campaign, on the cusp of two critically important primaries, at his home, and not one media outlet reported on it.

and not one media outlet reported on it.

Why? Good question. Let’s ask the NYT and WaPo and Chicago Tribune and CNN and the major networks.

But, to be honest, we all know the answer. They were too strung out on Hopium.

That part of this diary I don’t by that for a minute.

Too many on this site give the Press the benefit of the doubt. They shouldn’t.

I have *zero* doubt that the Press in fact knew about stuff like this meeting and *purposely* buried the stories.

I think they’ve been *actively* conspiring to help Obama since Day #1.

It’s not negligence - it’s *conspiracy*.

Our attitude should be: MSM bias toward Obama is accepted fact

And, we have plenty of evidence to back us up. Lots of stuff we can point to as justification for our conclusion.

Yes, conclusion. You come to a conclusion after you’ve looked at lots of evidence. That should be our position: We conclude that the MSM is biased, based on this evidence.

Let the MSM argue, convincingly, otherwise.

One of the MSM’s center of gravity is its credibility. It is also a weakness of theirs. If you hammer, again and again, at something that’s critical to your opponent, eventually your opponent is weakened.

We have more than a year until the next set of Congressional primaries, to hammer away…

Everyone knew that Obama sat in that vile HateAmericaChurch where the congregation cheers racism and anti-Americanism and where they honor the worst racist in America, a man Obama always called “Minister” Farrakhan. So this new revelation even if known during the campaign surely wouldn’t have moved those that chose to overlook his flaws and hope they could rid themselves of white guilt.

The cure will be his ownership of the deep recession we are in and will stay in for years, beginning to be punctuated by inflation and high int rates.

agree?

…the last presidential campaign demonstrated it’s new found version of the Three Monkeys style of reporting, vis a vis the Democratic Party, “See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Do no Evil”, while sending entire divisions of reporters to Anchorage and Phoenix to sabotage the opposition’s campaigns,
Lead by the High Priest (Priestess?) of Same Gander Marriage over at the NYT, the media was so desperate to elect a Liberal to the Presidency that they totally overlooked THE OBAMBI’s almost completely anti American record.

I don't think they overlooked his anti-American record, it's their record as well.

janis Wednesday, June 3rd at 9:14AM EDT (link)

Why would they blow the whistle on someone who they knew would help them achieve their singular goal of making this country more like Europe? They wanted a country that wasn’t identified first as Christian, then one that didn’t have a strong military, then one that applauds abortion as right and necessary, then one that doesn’t celebrate the American tradition of working hard and making lots of money to do with as one sees fit. Most of all they wanted an America that subscribes to their viewpoint of multiculturalism and moral equivalency.

With Obama, they got the whole package. What’s not to like from their point of view?

(fewer by the way) are teachers and state workers. Somwhere along in their lives hey have learned to filibuster. I say this article or any revealing article or device Obama is enacting, and they say, w/o pause ‘THAT’S NOT TRUE–
He is not doing that at all. You are wrong or mistaken.”they don’t listen or think at all.
There is NO basis even for a discussion…. Also they want this goverment. My friends are totally insulated from the economy. The best healthcare, the best salaries, the best benefits, never any cloud will darken their door. So they can enjoy, yes enjoy the thumb being stuck in the establishment’s eye. Still fighting mom-and-dad…

well, larryp, that same bunch is now looking into the abyss as well.

Here in Tennessee, Gov. Bredesen just announced that in spite of accepting bailout money, state workers are going to be laid off anyway. In California, I heard somewhere the other day that tens of thousands of teachers are going to be laid off. It’s only a matter of time before they discover that their pension funds are taking major hits by having bank failures, and by having companies go under, not to mention the hits that the market has taken. And will continue to take. I don’t believe for a millisecond that this economy has hit bottom. Not by a long shot.

Sorry bart, their memories don’t go back that far. So they can’t even comprehend the question let alone begin to answer it. As far as they are concerned, whatever policy The Big 0 is currently advocating/implementing has always been the policy he supported.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

I truly cannot keep up. The flip flops are astounding, I keep a running diary in word pad and it’s exhausting. Thinking in my retirement years (and they may be closer than I think as I am in manufacturing) I will go to it like a dog to a bone.

The GOP will never again be a majority party until we address the media problem. The ones who control information are extremely powerful in influencing elections, and therefore, policy.

The 2008 elections saw a new level of bias in the media that rivals the bias in the state-control medias of totalitarian states. Until the GOP finds a way around this, we have no real chance of convincing middle America to vote for us.

But the real solution to the problem is not to let Democrats select our candidate as they did with McCain. If we had kept the votes of those who voted for Bush but stayed home for McCain, we would have won. We need candidates who will bring those folks back. I did not see a single one who could have done it in 2008.

On the other hand, I couldn’t bring myself to vote for Bush in ‘04, but voted for McCain precisely because nothing which BHO has done has been a surprise for me. I knew who I was voting against.
