MEMBER DIARY

Some in the media invent a McCain-Palin contradiction

They say she agrees with Barry about Pak. Nope.

This is media slime. Sarah Palin was in a Philadelphia restaurant when some guy asked her, basically, she thought our government should fight terrorism. Here’s the exchange, according to Jake Tapper:

As Palin was glad handling, a man named Michael Rovito, wearing a Temple University t-shirt, approached Palin

“How about the Pakistan situation?” he asked her. “What’s your thoughts about that.”

“In Pakistan?” she asked.

“What’s going on over there,” Rovito said, “like Waziristian?”

“It’s working with Zardari to make sure that we’re all working together to stop the guys from coming in over the border,” Palin responded. “And we’ll go from there.”

“Waziristan is blowing up!” exclaimed Rovito.

“Yeah it is,” said Palin, “and the economy there is blowing up too.”

“So we do cross the border,” he asked, “like from Afghanistan to Pakistan, you think?”

“If that’s what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in,” she said, “absolutely, we should.”

As John McCain said on ABC’s This Week when host George Stephanopoulos tried to paint this as a major policy break between McCain and the subordinate on his ticket, Palin:

“I don’t think most Americans think that that’s a definitive policy statement made by Governor Palin. And I would hope you wouldn’t, either.”

Steph’s hang up is that he equated Palin’s statement with one made by Barack Obama in a speech to an audience at Washington DC’s Woodrow Wilson Center last year.

In that August 1, 2007 speech, Obama bosted:

There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans,” he said. “They are plotting to strike again. . . . If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will.”

That is Barack Obama, the crazed berserker, the go-it-alone cowboy, telling Pakistan that he’s prepared to march in there on a moment’s notice and begin shooting the place up.

At Friday’s debate, John McCain said:

Now, on this issue of aiding Pakistan, if you’re going to aim a gun at somebody, George Shultz, our great secretary of state, told me once, you’d better be prepared to pull the trigger.

I’m not prepared at this time to cut off aid to Pakistan. So I’m not prepared to threaten it, as Senator Obama apparently wants to do, as he has said that he would announce military strikes into Pakistan.

We’ve got to get the support of the people of — of Pakistan. He said that he would launch military strikes into Pakistan.

Now, you don’t do that. You don’t say that out loud. If you have to do things, you have to do things, and you work with the Pakistani government.

This scored a point for McCain, and this is why Steph wanted to return the favor for Obama by fictionalizing a policy statement from Sarah Palin which contradicted McCain’s line against Obama in the Old Miss debate.

Sarah Palin was talking in general about fighting terrorism, not saying specifically that we should attack Pakistan without working with their government.

But the mainstream media are determined to turn this into something that it clearly is not. From the AP:

McCain chided Democrat Barack Obama during Friday’s presidential debate for saying publicly he supports striking terrorist targets inside Pakistan if the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to do so.

[ . . .]
But on Saturday, Palin said much the same thing to a customer at a Philadelphia restaurant, with the press nearby.

No she did not.

And a CBSNews.com blog tries to tell us: Palin Contradicts McCain On Pakistan, Seems To Back Obama’s Position.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Palin said that if there are terrorists there, we cross the border. She did not specify that we would do it without consulting the Pak government, as the media assert. She was giving an off-the-cuff answer to a poorly phrased question, not delivering a policy address.

To his credit, ABC News’ Jake Tapper, presented the info without the asinine accusation. A few — not most — of his media cohorts, however, are displaying the journalistic skills and the intellectual capacity of a cup of warm, stale beer. Hey, it still gives off the gas.

Well, either that… or they’re lying.

Maybe this is partly why the McCain team doesn’t want her out in front of the media – they know the media will twist everything she says. Remember the initial soundbite on the ABC interview – that we should attack Russia? It was nonsense.
BTW, did Biden’s gaffe on clean coal get this much traction? I don’t remember.

but at least when she is herself, she can protect herself, and you can guarantee that almost all of the MSM crap will be just that.

I say, let her go… She can inspire many just by speaking the truth. Let her go!

and have been right to do so, under Bush, and I agree with Obama’s statement and Bush has said essentially the same thing, generically many times.

I want nation-states to FEAR us. It has been a great deterrant since the axis of evil speech and our invasions, as well as attacks on a jeep in Yemen and other isolated attacks in the Phillipines and several recent attacks with drones, special combat units and helicopters, all of which have been reported in the press.

all of the democratic steam is going to leave the Obama campaign when the votes are counted on this bail-out and it looks like a democratic done deal. real people are concerned with thier every day requirements and this economic debacle.obama should be reminded constantly about his remark about poor folks clinging to the 2nd amendment and thier bibles his reference to rural america. Sarah Palin can connect with real america by reinphasizing Obamas connection to fannie mae and fannie mack and how that started the slippery slope the economy is on ” obama was the number two reciepient of campaign donations from them Behind Chris Dodd. Just by being prepared for joes gaffs and capitalizing on his ability to continuosly stick his foot in his mouth. staying on the offensive and and looking confident give that game winning smile. don’t fear Biden he is not the big expert on foriegn affairs he is presumed to be if he constantly gets his facts wrong.quote him on Hillary Clinton “so you think shes a better choice Joe? Quote him on him saying we need a President with no on the job training” did’nt you say that joe? Whats your stance on clean coal plants Joe? Did’nt you say we are’nt building any, to the contradiction of Obama. if they Biden and Obama can be seen as disconnected on the issues it plants the question in voters minds are they as inexperienced and misinformed as they seem? she has to attack like the pit bull with lip stick at the republican convention and seem presidential to the undecided. open up with confidence and facts joe will do the rest by mixing up fact and fiction.Walt

yes the mainstream media are doing everything they can to cast doubt on Sarah Palin. Yes they have millions of dollars to pool from to keep up the heat.they have thier attack dogs at SNL, and Msnbc working overtime to make her look like a Alaskan housewife out of place in a Washington bogged down with earmarks and quick bailouts. yes they have scored a few points , a few that may well come to haunt them. She’s a new bread of politician you can bet your cards on that, and she scares the death out of the old buisness as usual crowd. But in the end the american voter will have the real opinion in Nov. She has a honest air about her that connects with every day people. In this upcoming debate the Sarah palin from the republican convention has to show up. once this happens the pundits will be shaking in thier pen and ink. she has to control the focus of the public. tell in her own words how she dealt with the economy in Alaska then transition into the economic situation today, reminding tax hikes like capital gains are a death blow to a weakened economy.on the suject of foriegn affairs she is Governor of Alaska and deals with many countries both economically and on the defense of our north west areas , yes she as governor is notified every time a foriegn power such as Russia enters U.S air Space. Planes have to be launched from Alaskan soil to intecept and follow until no longer presenting a threat. much resposability for a young governor.also the appropriate command in continental U.S.A must be notified if a diplomatic response is required.those who tried to make a joke out of her last interview, did so out of ignorance of the facts.she is commander and chief of the national guard something Bill Clinton used in his resume when asked about experience, what has joe biden done that makes him a foriegn policy guru? Open mouth insert foot? Don’t rely on him to do it rachet up the pressure on his contradictory remarks on the campaign trail. get him rattled. note the marked difference between him and his running mate mention statements made by biden that back it up. make this your show, through sincerly stating the facts.Shes got what it takes to put the pundits off the front page. if she can focus the disconnects in the opposing candidates policy and distance Biden from Obama by showing how they are far appart on many issues due to bidens many over the top remarks she’s a winner!Walt
