Jack Murtha expounds on his district’s redneck racists

It's past time for this man to go.

Congressman Okinawa Jack Murtha (D-PA-12) said that Obama would win his district despite the innate racism of his constituents. That did not sit very well with those constituents, and Murtha has finally decided to clarify his bad self to Pittsburgh’s WTAE Channel 4 Action News on Monday. According to Jack, naught buy five to ten years ago, the people of Western Pennsylvania were “rednecks.”

“What I said, that indicted everybody, that’s not what I meant at all. What I mean is there’s still folks that have a problem voting for someone because they are black,” Murtha said.

Murtha said the history of southwestern Pennsylvania is rife with racism.

:

And there’s more.

“This whole area, years ago, was really redneck,” Murtha told Channel 4 Action News.

Murtha believes there is one segment of the population which is holding on to its racist beliefs and he said it’s difficult for them to change. Murtha said it may be even more difficult for them to vote for Sen. Barack Obama for president.

“Particularly older people. They want change but they don’t want to see things go too far,” Murtha said.

Some, not all, of his constituents hate African Americans because they are black. Has he spoken to these people? Do they write to him to express these thoughts? What does he do about this? Does he warn businesses which might want to relocate into Pennsylvania’s 12th District that they’d better watch out because whole swaths of his constituents are hardened racists?

You know, this could be projection on Jack’s part. Jack Murtha, at 76, fits the profile of racists he just gave to WTAE. But no, it’s no more fair for me to assume that Murtha is an old racist than it is for him to assert the same of his older constituents.

However:

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.”

“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

That was Barry, of course, who had just returned to the friendly climes of San Francisco from the evidently hostile venue of Murtha’s western Pennsylvania small town home of Johnstown.

It’s time for that fossil to go. Donate to Murtha’s opponent, the Republican, Colonel Bill Russell at his campaign web site.

If as a nation we’re really up for “change” this election, it’s darn well about time to change Okinawa Jack into a retired person. This blowhard toad has been an embarrassment to my state for decades since he slithered out of trouble from the Abscam scandal by basically saying “I won’t take the money…now”. Johnstown, PA can do a heck of a lot better than Rep. Murtha.

  • PaConservative

A Poll came out recently showing Murtha losing 47-44 and that was before these comments. Okinawa Jack is going DOWN!

are both going down we may get Carney, Altmire, Murphy, and Sestak too. Don’t buy the polls this is going to be an ok year for PA R’s.

        Gerlach and Dent are safe.

English and Murphy (R) are in trouble. English will almost certainly lose.

Tim Holden (D) has a decent shot of losing to Tony Gilhooli.

This goes against everything I’ve ever learned from the movies. I thought all racists and rednecks were either Southerners, Republicans, or both.

You know what I love; I love when Democrats just tell what they really believe.

    Keep telling us, Jack!

And for the Republicans still thinking it’s over or that we need to punish Conservatives: do you think it will get better or worse with a Congress filled with Dems like Murtha and led by Pilosi?

Wake up! Turn out, Turn out, Turn out!

  • blh1976

The DCCC’s got to be losing it right about now. Tim Mahoney wins a very red seat in 2006 and has a great chance to keep it, before his libido gets in the way. And now, the liberal stalwart from Western Pa. can’t keep from continually insulting his constituents – you know, the ones he needs to vote for him to keep his seat in Congress. I guess he thinks that if they’re rednecks and racists they’re not paying attention to the news or what he says because they’re too stupid. Next week, he’ll tell us they all watch NASCAR and commit incest.

Keep talking Congressman, please, keep talking!!!

It’s a hoot to watch these liberals shoot themselves in the foot every time they open their mouths.

Some say the democrats are feeling “confident” about their chances of gaining the white house and a super majority in congress…
I prefer to use the word “arrogant”…
You see, “arrogance” screams and shouts for attention and beats its listeners over the heads with the message to pound it through their skulls. Why? Clearly, they do not believe their message is yet obvious because they themselves to not believe it.

Meanwhile, “confidence” commands attention by speaking clearly, handing the listener the truth and allowing the obvious to settle naturally into the minds of those who hear it.

The liberals (like the past two elections) have been feverishly attempting to convince their supporters (and themselves) that victory is already theirs in both congress and the white house…
Sooo… (if they are so so truly “confident”…) why the need for the ever increasing efforts of ACORN to tilt the field in their favor?
Why the increasingly blatant bias in the media?
And why did Bob Shrumfeel compelled to write a whining little article about how everybody is consipring to “steal” their victory again and clearly acknowledging (admitting, instilling, reitterating… fanning the already burning flames of)the LACK of “confidence” among democrats regarding the lections?

Democrats, scarred by the stolen election of 2000 and the near miss of 2004, privately worry, wring their hands and, traveling cyberspace?s vast expanse, trip over a discouraging word, poll, or prediction. Generally, they needn?t look farther than the Drudge Report, which shamelessly selects information?and disinformation?in order to stereotype Barack Obama and denigrate his prospects.

Careful Bob, your annual democratic presidential election season insecurity is showing.

When will Bush be made to apologize for lying 4,100+ into early graves?

When will Boehner be made to apologize for stating that the bloodshed in Iraq is a “small price to pay”?

  • spainishirish

After all, issues and character and substance don’t matter. The only way someone could vote against The One is pure racism. This piffle emanates regularly from the Obama campaign and the candidate himself.

Murtha should have been booted after he demagouged Haditha. We can hope this time his constituents personally have felt the sting of this idiot enough to boot him out of Congress.

We have 14 days to save our Country. Think on this.

We are not going to be able to prevent the Democrats dominating The House of Representatives AND The Senate after this election.. If Obama takes The White House then our beloved Country will be controlled by a Three-Headed-Monster ? imagine it ? OBAMA-REID-PELOSI. We will lose the checks and balances that are so essential to our political well-being. The good ol’ USA will become an ELECTIVE DICTATORSHIP.
Barack Obama is an arrogant control-freak. With a subservient Congress he will rule our Country like a Pharaoh ? a God-King or an absolute ruler like Stalin or Hitler. Remember ‘all power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’. Hitler was a charismatic leader with a power of oratory that was hypnotic and which created outbursts of emotional ecstasy and hysteria amongst his devoted followers. We’ve all seen Barack Obama do this to the throngs that attend his rallies. Did you see Obama control the masses at Denver and St Louis? I am genuinely worried about where this is all leading to. Look at ‘Leni’ Riefenstahl’s film called ‘Triumph des Willens’ ? ‘Triumph of The Will’. The whole 104 minute film is on YouTube. It was filmed in 1934 as Hitler hypnotised his adoring followers, in processions and rallies in Nuremburg. Hitler’s movement was ‘National Socialism’. Ring any bells? You will see haunting similarities with Obama’s rallies. I don’t believe for a moment that Obama would stoop to the worst depravities of Hitler, but I am convinced that he WOULD create an OVERBEARING and OPPRESSIVE STATE. Hitler, in his speeches, emoted about peace and the classless and unified people controlling the state. If you are charismatic and you tell a big lie and you tell it often enough and well enough, with conviction and eloquence using a form of words that can’t be unravelled, then you can deceive millions of people ? especially if you are telling them what they want to hear. This is a form of brainwashing. This is what Barack Obama is doing. Don’t be deceived by his ‘million-dollar’ smile.

WAKE UP. WAKE UP with a jolt. WAKE UP in a cold sweat.

It’s time to man the PANIC STATIONS, but it’s NOT TOO LATE. We must ram home this message for the next 14 days and work non-stop to get out the vote for John McCain.

We have the opportunity to have John McCain, a real-life American hero and a man with vast experience and proven sound judgement, as our President. John McCain is a man we can trust and a man who will have a positive, constructive relationship with the Democrat controlled Congress and the American people. Most Democrats deep down inside know that they can trust John McCain and that he would make an excellent President. COME ON! COME ON! LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Now I know that some will call me a racist for using that word but in the context I provided I request a pass.

Jack Murtha is probably not a racist so much as he is an elitist but I will not sit by while he purposefully demeans an entire race with a racial slur. I wouldn’t sit by and allow John McCain to refer to low income urban blacks as ni##3rs either.

Is Redneck a racial epithet for a WHITE person who resides predominantly in the country? Yes it is. Therefore it is equivalent. The red neck of a Redneck is red due to his long hours in the sun working on the farm. But that is not the meaning of the work today. The meaning of the word today is ignorant white person who is inherently racist, which is inherently racist itself.

How about Honkey….or Cracker….are those racist….what is the demarc on racist language Mark? How much derision must we take before we can call it what it is. Do we really need to wait until there are hangings to act against such racist tendencies?

Really i want to know where the line is.

  • itrytobenice

and like the Redneck Hippie, I’m proud of it. As a matter of fact, I enjoy Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, and others just like them.

We have redneck calendars and make fun of each other with redneck jokes.

But when someone like John Murtha, who is one of those elitist snobs that Achance referred to in his latest diary, says it, I take it as the insult that it is. He is one from whom I’d like to snatch his head.

    • itrytobenice

At every college in America. I would say high school, but the language is definitely rated R.

      • Mark_Kilmer

The term redneck is only sometimes used to disparage southern, rural, working class white people, or those who might act like they are thought to act.

The other term is always offensive and is used to refer to a black person based simply on the color of his/her skin.

Historically, people called “rednecks” have not been hunted down by mobs and hanged by people snarling the epithet. They have not been denied basic rights while being harassed with that appellation.

Words mean things, Aaron. The term “redneck,” while usually an insult, is not an abject term of hatred. The other is. The n-term is designed to cut to the bone. The term “redneck” is often a Jeff Foxworthy joke.

I don’t use either term, but if I ever used the term “redneck,” I’d probably apologize. If I used the other to refer to another person, not using it as an example as you did, I’d check myself into a psychiatric hospital.

        • Mark_Kilmer

I quoted both Murtha and Obama. It’s a current running in this campaign on their side.

          • thevertman

Sure didn’t want those checks and balances during the Bush Admin, so why do we need them now? One party in total control is wonderful ask Tom “Money” Delay.

          • aaronbg

It is the sentiment in which it is used that make it a racist term. No word in and of itself is racist. The word only becomes racist when used with that intent. And this is true for both words. Back in Colorado I had a friend who was black who would great me with the term ni##a, he meant it as a term of endearment…like brotha…and I also replied with the same term. We never had a problem because the sentiment was clear.

Jack Murtha’s intent was clear, he was using the term Redneck in a derogatory manor in order to incite anger against the rednecks…granted he is an idiot so it backfired but the intent was clear none the less.

We can’t let these things go like this. I am a big boy and I don’t let the word get under my skin, I have taken any power out of the word and so have you. But if we allow it to be used in the fashion that Murtha used it, we do ourselves a disservice.

Oh and the N word used to just mean ignorant….words have meanings indeed…until they change the meaning that is.

  • streetwise

to contribute. Thanks for the reminder!

    • destroyr

Both are generally insulting, but FREQUENTLY used as an expression of camaraderie by those meant to be offended. Both are derived from skin color, one from the sunburnt neck of a farmer, the other from the Latin/french/Spanish for the color black. I think it is a pretty fair comparison, from a literary standpoint. Culturally speaking [N-word] is thought to be more offensive simply because it is socially inexcusable in our day and age to offend a person of color, and socially inexcusable to allow that a person of European descent could be offended by anything.

If you want to compare histories, you don’t think Union soldiers called southerners rednecks while they killed them? You don’t think the term was used by carpetbaggers during reconstruction, when all of the state governments were hijacked by New Englanders? Is any of that quite as harsh as slavery? No. Could a comparison be made between political moves during reconstruction against southerners and Jim Crow laws? To an extent, it could.

But history is just that. Speaking for right now, it is FAR more common, and usually totally accepted to speak disparagingly of and discriminate against people from the south, or the country. Big city liberals are every bit as intolerant and arrogant toward the “inbred, bible thumping rednecks” of the south and small towns as racists were at the worst periods in American history. They are simply less violent because, let’s face it, liberals are pu**ies.

The politics in Illinois is a cesspool. And it is controlled by the Democratic party. The state government is at a stalemate even with a clear majority of Dems in office! My Uncle was a precinct captain in Chicago back in the 60′s and 70′s. He was good friends with the current Mayor Daley when Daley was the State’s Attorney. My Dad told me back then that this Mayor Daley was as dumb as a box of rocks. And since he has become Mayor, he proves it every day. He gushes over the terrorist Ayers even though his Dad, the first Mayor Daley told the police back in 1968 to shoot to kill the rioters. 40 years later the son sells out. That’s the Chicago way.

Not trying to give a history lesson, but the term “redneck’ originated in the western part of West Virginia in the 1920′s. Coal miners who were trying to unionize had a two day battle on a wooded mountain with company police and some local law officers. To distinguish friend from foe in the thick woods the miners tied red bandanas around their necks, tyng to cut down friendly fire. The name locally to identify the miners who had fought for the right to unionize.I think the definition would be someone who is willing to do what they think is right, and isn’t to happy with ‘outsider’ interference. Not necessarily something I would be ashamed of.

Detroit has the distinction of being the most segregated city. It is done entirely by the people living there, by their own design.

flag first proposed in 1861, the flag that was never official but became very popular during the war and after. It is most similar the the official Confederate Navy Jack, although the blue is darker.

The modern “Confederate Flag” is not the Stars and Bars, this is obvious if you think about it, the flag has no bars. It does have a St. Andrews Cross owing to the heavily Scottish heritage of many in the Confederate States of America.

so much racism and segregation in the North, it is hard to keep a top ten list lol.

I know if you got to a Denny’s in Mississippi, you will see half black and half white, and they are all mixed together enjoying themselves. I have seen it too many times with my own eyes, so no argument can counter it.

Murtha was popular with the Democrats for a while because his military experience gave them some much needed
“cred” in that area, but the more he talks the dumber he looks.

…from the “FDT” & “Reagan Coalition” sites. Born & raised in GA…steeped in Southern virtue, manners & tradition. I take pride in that word, “redneck”…but understand that there are folks out there who’ll use it in a demeaning manner. “God bless em’”…that’s what my momma says. That’s her polite way of blessing them out. “They can’t help it…not having been taught manners” was another one. I am a staunch proponent of Southern Values…good, decent folks just working hard, taking care of family & community. Loyal to the state, family & friends. Real people of the South take no stock in the Rebel “Battle Flag”…it means more than a political dispute. It just saddens me, that “my” South has been diluted…belittled & for the most part, systematically dismantled from what it was. I was always proud that “we” were known for our Faith, good manners & simple ways. I fear, however, the “Bible Belt” times are coming under shadows…long ones, cast by Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, the Clintons, the ACLU & the “great” Obama. God bless Fred Thompson…I truly hope that he, Gingrich & other fine Patriots can ignite a conservative revival that has never been seen before. We must retake that which has been taken from us…before it’s too late. By the way, I like my grits, boiled peanuts, peach cobbler, cornbread…& the Georgia Bulldogs! Heck, I didn’t think PA was home to anything remotely Southern!
The liberals are just envious, that’s all. I’m glad to be here also…have visited often since inception…just never got around to joining. Thanks for having me. Ray

we can donate to his competitor, who is a staunch conservative, Irag War vet, and still serving as a Colonel in the Army Reserves. Come on guys, we can do this, this is a Congressional race not a presidential race, every dollar counts. But we either kick the traitor out or wew do not, full stop.

please donate, I am doing it, and I do not live north of Mason Dixon.

you have to hit another link to get to his new page, check out his commercials and donate

I agree with you. You are probably more polite about it than I am, though. Don’t like how some folks have appropriated some of our artifacts for foul purposes.

And just because I live in TN doesn’t mean I like the color orange. Grew up in GA. Go Dawgs!

You’re a scholar. I was being lazy in my snark.
