Bob McDonnell’s “Macaca” Moment - And How He Can Get Past It

2006; Senator George Allen is running for re-election against former Republican Jim Webb. Despite the polls everywhere showing that the GOP was going to have a very unhappy Election Night in a few weeks, Allen was comfortably ahead and already planning his next six years in Washington DC representing the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Then he (as he says), derisively referring to a video stalker working for the Webb campaign’s mohawk style haircut, uttered one fateful three-syllable word; “macaca” - which supposedly was a racial slur in Morocco or French Tunisia sometime in the 1940s and ’50s.

Whatever the case, over the next few weeks until Election Day, on the basis of “macaca” George Allen found himself having to face charges on the front pages of Virginia’s newspapers, often leveled by anonymous “sources” or supposedly “neutral” witnesses that upon deeper investigation were revealed to be highly partisan actors that he was an unrepentant white supremacist who once stuffed a severed deer’s head in a black family’s mailbox and nicknamed college football teammates after KKK Grand Wizards.

Leading the charge was the Washington Post - the editorial board and reporting staff of which put out over a 100 articles and editorials, more than a dozen on the front page, in about half as many days on “macaca” - all very obviously deliberately calculated to plant the perception in the minds of the Virginia electorate that George Allen was a racist bigot just in time for the General Election - which Allen lost to Jim Webb by less than 1%.

The Washington Post had successfully swung an election to favor its chosen candidate … and three years later, it’s trying to repeat the same feat - this time in the upcoming Virginia Governor’s race.

Republican Bob McDonnell is comfortably ahead of Democrat Creigh Deeds in the race to be the next Governor of Virginia. And the Washington Post, very clearly co-ordinating with the Deeds Campaign and the Virginia Democratic Party apparatus has assigned considerable resources and a significant amount of precious paper real estate into repeating the coup it performed against George Allen to swing the election in favor of Creigh Deeds. However, instead of anything McDonnell has said, the Post’s bloody shirt is a Masters thesis that he wrote while at Regent University in 1989.

WaPo “Staff Writer” Amy Gardner fired the first shot and set the narrative in the very first sentence of her article;

At age 34, two years before his first election and two decades before he would run for governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell submitted a master’s thesis to the evangelical school he was attending in Virginia Beach in which he described working women and feminists as “detrimental” to the family.

Sounds pretty bad, doesn’t it … at least, not politically correct. Why, Robert McDonnell obviously believes that women should never work outside the home, right?

Er … no.

Patterico co-blogger Amphipolis found it suspicious that only the one word “detrimental” was being quoted to back up what Gardner was obviously trying to convey to her readers. So he decided to take a look at the 93 page thesis paper for himself, something the Washington Post’s writers and editors would certainly know that less than 1% of their readers would bother to do … and of course, he discovered that “… aside from the issue of whether it is even appropriate to imply that a 20-year old college thesis represents his current beliefs, McDonnell is clearly being deliberately misrepresented here.

Here is the full passage [H/T: Amphipolis] where the words “detrimental”, “working women” and “feminists” - emphasis mine.

Republican concerns for fiscal austerity are easily impaled by an additional $1.3 billion a year in expenses. Surely the leadership recognizes that existing federal child-care programs already cost more that $6.9 billion in 1988. Further expenditures would be used to subsidize a dynamic new trend of working women and feminists that is ultimately detrimental to the family by entrenching a status-quo of non-parental primary nurture of children.

Personally I would have used the word “care” instead of “nurture” but the point remains the same. Any fair reading of the passage would immediately recognize the argument that McDonnell is making is that government child care programs could end up enabling the establishment of an environment where the primary care-givers of children would not be their parents. Reading the full passage and the rest of the thesis, it is very obvious that Gardner and her editors made the decision to strip out the actual context in which the words in question were used by McDonnell with a clear eye towards influencing the election that is coming up in two months time.

Either way, having found manufactured a “macaca” moment for McDonnell, the next step, already in progress, is saturation coverage of the issue. Day in and day out, co-ordinating and communicating with Democratic operatives, in a bid to drive down McDonnell’s support just in time before the voters go to the polls. So far, according to Jim Geraghty over at the Campaign Spot, the Washington Post’s coverage of the thesis “scandal” is “up to two front-page stories, three inside stories, two columns, one house editorial and one cartoon” in the past week.

Now, so far, notwithstanding the joyful comments of liberals celebrating the “macaca” issue that would take down McDonnell, it doesn’t look like it’s working; the most recent polls (Rasmussen) show that McDonnell continues to maintain a solid 9-point lead over Deeds even after the WaPo’s wall-to-wall coverage of the thesis and despite the apparent decision by the Deeds Campaign and the entirety of the Virginia Democratic Party establishment to ride the “pressing” issue of McDonnell’s 20 year old dissertation to victory.

However, this is just one week - and from reading the WaPo’s headlines, articles, columns and the house editorial all pushing the McDonnell as theocratic sexist troglodyte meme, the newspaper is obviously in it for the long haul - if the Washington Post had halted its “macaca” campaign against George Allen after just one week, he’d be the current senior Senator from Virginia.

The issue therefore, that the McDonnell campaign has to address is that of one of the nation’s two most influential newspapers using all its resources to cast him as a clear and present danger to the rights and livelihoods of Virginia’s entire female population on a daily basis (very conveniently) right around the time voters are fully paying attention. The influence of the Post, its ability to set the agenda and the liberal orientation of most Beltway journalists, means that practically every newspaper in Virginia, the other nationals, TV stations and the wire services, based entirely on the deliberate misrepresentation of McDonnell’s views by a dishonest partisan journalist working for a dishonest partisan newspaper, are going to be covering the race as a matter of whether or not Virginia is going to elect a Governor who wants to keep women barefoot, pregnant and chained to the stove - just like in 2006, where the Senate race was recast as whether or not Virginians would vote to send a Klansman to represent their state in the United States Senate.

If McDonnell allows this to happen, the next two months are going to be harrowing grinds as the Washington Post and the rest of liberal Virginia Fourth Estate goes to the mat to drive down his polling numbers. Like I commented a while back, the Republican candidate’s number one enemy is a partisan liberal Press Corps that has successfully sold itself to the American people as being non-partisan, objective, disinterested chroniclers of facts. As I wrote in January in Bob McDonnell’s own RedState diary about his campaign;

[2] The VA media is as liberal as they come. Do not, under any circumstances take positive mention today as any form of indication of how they’ll treat you tomorrow. They will oppose you, they will come after your family and friends and they will blow any gaffes of yours wildly out proportion to help the Democratic candidate. Have a media response team ready to wargame the coverage of events as they happen and keep your campaign one step ahead of the curve.
Hold regular press conferences to inform the public and to forcefully correct the record when distorted. Face every problem or so-called controversy head-on. Record every interaction with the Press and every interview and upload as soon as possible.

Fool me once, shame on you …

The question now is, what is McDonnell and his campaign going to do about this?

A wise man is said to be the man who learns from his mistakes - the wiser man is the guy who doesn’t just learn from his own mistakes, he learns from the mistakes of others. The McDonnell campaign (and the Republican Party of Virginia) should therefore turn a critical eye toward the Allen 2006 campaign’s reaction as “macaca” grew from a stray innocuous comment into a conflagration that ended up with George Allen mounting the podium to give the concession speech - and head off any chances of history repeating itself.

The first mistake Allen made was attempting to ignore it even as the Washington Post ran front page after feature story after column after editorial advancing the Klansman meme on the strength of “macaca”, publishing and giving credibility to every single bit of innuendo and unverifiable story to lend it weight - the journalistic equivalent of inflicting the “death of a thousand cuts.” The second was that when he finally addressed the issue he allowed himself to be put on the defensive. The third was assuming that he was dealing with good-faith actors and therefore that that it would (rightly) blow over once he addressed it. The fourth was his mealy-mouthed 60-second advertisement begging calling for a “return to the real issues” when that didn’t pan out, without openly calling out the parties that had made it the be-all end-all of the campaign.

My opinion at the time, was that Allen should have started October and seized control of the narrative with a brutal prime-time speech calling out his critics. I even wrote a speech that I thought he could give to that effect. Alas, it was not to be.

So here’s my advice to the McDonnell Campaign; do not ignore the issue. This does not mean the Campaign should allow itself to be distracted away from rolling out its policies on education, energy, transportation, etc. but it should be cognizant of the fact that it won’t get the chance to implement those policies if it allows itself to be bled to death by allowing mendacious attacks on the character of the candidate to go unchallenged on the pages of the nation’s most influential paper. Second, get off the defensive - McConnell was very clearly deliberately misrepresented by the Washington Post’s politically motivated cherry-picking of his words to drive down his support in the polls. Third, openly acknowledge the fact that the news editors and reporters covering Virginia politics for the Washington Post are not good faith actors and act based on that fact. Fourth, publicly call them out on what they’re doing, denounce them in no certain terms and demand that they stop and return to the issues that truly matter to Virginians, not their own petty partisan concerns.

Republicans need to realize that the only way past a ginned-up and hyped-up “controversy” or “scandal” without being mortally wounded is by going through it - by publicly confronting the people pushing it and their enablers in the Press Corps (in this case, they are one and the same). In the age of YouTube and blogs, the aphorism that one should avoid annoying someone “who buys ink by the barrel …” no longer applies. In this case the Washington Post has shown that it is out to destroy Bob McDonnell - there’s absolutely nothing to be gained by enabling the WaPo to keep up the pretense that their all-Thesis-all-the-time coverage is anything other than a partisan political operation.

To illustrate; Geraghty notes that on Tuesday (Sept 01) Bob McDonnell held a Press Conference at a High School to unveil his plan to increase the percentage of Virginia’s education dollars that go to the classroom to 65% - leading to a jump of up to $480 million going into classroom items and instruction instead of bureaucracy and administration. All except for one question by the reporters was about “The Thesis.” The Washington Post’s front page article, obstensibly about the education plan is titled; “Thesis Controversy Builds as Robert F. McDonnell (R) Tries to Move On” and devoted only 37 words to the proposal … the rest focused on “The Thesis.” WaPo blogger Anita Kumar’s title on her blog about the same plan? “McDonnell Unveils Proposal, Avoids Thesis Talk”.

Who would know, from reading the headlines, that just the day before, McDonnell conducted a 90 minute conference call answering questions on “The Thesis” from journalists, among whom were journalists from the Washington Post itself? To me, this answers any question about whether or not the WaPo’s editors and reporters are acting in good faith firmly in the negative. Get this; right now, the Creigh Deeds campaign has put out more Press Releases on “The Thesis” than all of Deeds’ issue positions combined. And to show that this is a coordinated political assassination being undertaken by the Post on behalf of the Deed’s campaign, the Post has done more articles on “The Thesis” than on all of Deeds’ issue positions combined. And do note that Deeds won the Democratic nomination thanks the WaPo’s heavy endorsement and torpedoing of his opponents in the Primaries.

This is nothing more than a political assassination, and the people of Virginia need to have it made clear as loudly and as clearly as possible.

Now, if I were an advisor to the McDonnell campaign, I would advise the candidate, at the earliest opportunity, to have one of his spokeswomen schedule a Press Conference in Northern Virginia, with his wife and daughters, his female campaign staffers, women he has served and worked with in the military, in private business and in public office and a smattering of his higher profile female supporters, (e.g. Sheila Johnson - co-founder of BET and a fixture in VA Democratic politics who chaired Tim Kaine’s inauguration committee) at the podium.

Then, the spokeswoman should take aim and open fire with both barrels. In my ideal world;

  • First of all, she should point out forcefully that McDonnell is being very blatantly misrepresented as Amphipolis pointed out. Second, she should openly call out the Washington Post as deliberately working to swing an election towards its favored candidate by trying to gin up fear amongst Virginia’s female voters that McDonnell is a threat to their careers and livelihoods. She should point out the fact that the Deeds Campaign has put out more press releases and the Washington Post has run more articles on this non-issue than they have on Creigh Deeds proposed plans for Virginia if he were to be elected Governor. She should point out that Deeds has put forward no plans for transportation, energy and jobs for Virginia, and an education plan that is nothing more than a warmed up version of the status quo - and suggest that that is why the Deeds Campaign and the Washington Post would prefer to focus a 100% of their attention on a non-issue like a 20 year old college thesis - which they misrepresented in the first to gin up this so-called “controversy.”
  • Next, she should highlight the women standing with her on the podium as real life answers to the ridiculous clearly politically-motivated questions of whether or not Bob McDonnell as Governor would pose a threat to the working women of Virginia. Point out that not only is his wife a woman who has a career outside the home, all three of his daughters are working women and two of them holds Masters’ degrees (one of them in Computer Science). She should also point out that the majority of his Campaign staff happen to be women whom he hired because they were the best for the job he hired them to do. Next she should point out that he has done the same, hired and worked with the best person for the job, regardless of gender, in military life and in private and public life.
  • Next (and this would be great political theater), she should ask any of the reporters present to raise their hands if they believe that if elected, Bob McDonnell would rescind the right of women in Virginia to vote? Do any of them believe that he’ll try to get legislation passed to make educating girls illegal? What about legislation to get all working women in Virginia fired from their jobs and forced to stay at home - is there anyone present who honestly believes that this is what Bob McDonnell has planned to get done as the next Governor of Virginia? If no one raises their hand - (trust me) no one will - she should then wonder why this non-issue has become the most important issue in this race for the Virginia press - especially the Washington Post, instead of the issues which concern Virginians, the economy, education, transportation, energy and jobs, all of which McDonnell has rolled out plans and policies for, while Creigh Deeds is desperately focusing all his attention on a 20 year old thesis - which was misrepresented in the first place? No wonder, after a full week(s) of non-stop coverage of this non-issue to help him catch up, he’s still well behind in the polls - Virginians have seen that he has nothing to offer.
  • And finally, the spokeswoman should turn her attention to the Washington Post and ask a few questions such as;[1] Given that it has not been standard practice at the Washington Post to go searching through the college essays of candidates - especially considering that no such effort was expended to seek out either Barack Obama or John McCain’s college theses last year - who put Amy Gardner up to looking for Bob McDonnell’s Regent University Masters’ Thesis? Has she (or any other ) made any effort to seek out Creigh Deeds’ college writings as well?
  • [2] Considering the deliberate misrepresentation of what McDonnell wrote, how much input did the Deeds campaign or any of its operatives have in the writing of Amy Gardner’s article? Have there been any discussions with members of the Deeds campaign or Virginia Democrat Party officials and Washington Post editorial staff regarding the coverage of the so-called “Thesis” controversy? Are there any understandings regarding access that have been reached between the Washington Post and a future Creigh Deeds administration in Richmond?
  • [3] etc.
  • She should then end it with saying that this issue is over and done with. McDonnell has addressed it extensively via his conference call and in every interaction with the Press ever since. He would answer no more questions on the topic because it is now obviously a partisan distraction designed to influence Virginia’s voters with a false impression of him and swing the election over to Creigh Deeds. Furthermore, while respecting their rights to publish whatever they want, true or false, objective or partisan, until the Washington Post discloses what role the Deeds’ campaign or Virginia Democratic Party played in the decision to misrepresent Bob McDonnell and make the resulting controversy front and center of the campaign, the campaign would no longer take any questions from their reporters.

And oh yeah … the McDonnell should have the entire thing on YouTube within the hour.

And I think that would be game, set and match. And who knows? Perhaps it would herald a reconsideration of the relationship between the GOP and the partisan liberal Press.

Absolutely Disgusting

DavidSage Saturday, September 5th at 2:03PM EDT (link)

I still see McDonnell winning, but this “Maccaca” moment took what would have been a solid, comfortable win into a squeaker.

The MSM is never going to give Republicans a fair shake, no matter how much we expose them. The media has always been biased towards liberals over the last 50 years, but it’s become noticeably more shrill over the last 10. The media used to at least “try” to look more objective, but now it relishes it’s role as being a mouthpiece for the Democrat Party. Unfortunately, the voters that decide election still get their info from mainstream sources like newspapers and network news, even though their balance sheets are in ruins.

Conservatives need to start pooling their money together and buying up some media outlets. Right now, we can get some at fire sale prices. Imagine the playing field if we say bought USA Today or Gannet. I know people think it’s a crazy proposition, but we’re just about the only country that has this game where a media outlet pretends it doesn’t have any biases. Throughout US history, it was common to have newspapers that made no bones about their biases.

No matter how much we go to war with the media, they’re just going to double down and keep trying to destroy conservatives. When politicians go after the media, it rarely looks good to voters, and the media knows that. We need more of our own outlets if we want to truly take them down.

I agree

Kayla Saturday, September 5th at 2:25PM EDT (link)

I don’t know why some rich conservatives haven’t bought some of these failing papers or even CBS. I heard that Sumner Redstone is hurting. We really need to have our own voice out there besides Fox News, which is doing a great job.

And Look At The Impact Of Fox News

DavidSage Saturday, September 5th at 3:07PM EDT (link)

That’s just one cable news network, and it has had a dramatic effect on the electorate since it came on the scene. I truly believe Bush wouldn’t have won either election had Fox News not been in existence.

Until we start having outlets that tilt in our direction, we’re going to keep having ridiculous “Maccaca” moments that derail Republican politicians. The MSM is really the only thing that’s propping up the Democrat Party. Once that falls, the Democrats would be in a world of hurt.

The MSM is never going to “get the message” or be “shamed” into being fair to Republicans. This latest generation of journalists are especially partisan. Most journalists think they’re job is to make a world a better place, and that means electing Democrats, and that’s what they’re going to keep trying to do until the place goes out of business.

Unfortunately, I never see that happening. These outlets will always exist in one form or another. No matter how bad the balance sheets are, media companies like the New York Times and the Washington Post are going to exist for all eternity.

With what Republicans spend on one election cycle, we could buy several newspapers for starters. That would give far more bang for the buck over the long haul than buying tv commercials that are quickly forgotten once the election is over. A savvy group of conservatives could even make it a successful and profitable venture like Fox News.

Outrage!

Jesse V Saturday, September 5th at 2:48PM EDT (link)

Everyone,

As I hope all are aware Obama has made a 2 Billion dollar loan to PetroBras, a Brazilian Oil company, to produce oil using off shore drilling off the coast of Brazil.

One of PetroBras’ leading investors also happens to be George Soros. (Is this a thanks to Uncle George and MoveOn.org for getting PrezBO elected?)

What is going on in our government? How can any right minded U.S. Senator or Congress Person allow this to happen?

In America we cannot drill off our own shore, we cannot build any new nuclear power facitlites, yet we are loaning $2 Billion to a Brazilian company and George Soros to do that which we are not allowed to do. This is LUNACY!

We must start a letter/email writing campaign to protest this loan and this all too obvious attempt to keep America dependent on foreign oil and continue PrezBO’s stated goal of bankrupting our oil and coal companies.

Every man/woman in Congress must be told that “We the People” are outraged over this and that we demand this loan be canceled and that we begin reducing our dependency on foreign oil immediately, by allowing off shore drilling in our own country before we loan money to foreign governments to do that which we are forbidden to do.

We must write every news outlet, every newspaper, tell our firends and every acquaintance so that they may follow us as we lead our country back from the brink of bankruptcy and destruction.

This is our money not the governments! Where does this money come from? Why isn’t our money being used to help America and not Brazil! I’m sick!

I’m so mad my eyes are bleeding!

What say all of you? Do we do nothing or do we stand up to the socialists in our country and stop this lunacy?

This is possibly a great comment....

A new SurveyUSA poll is the second that shows Bob McDonnell (R) essentially undamaged from last weekend’s Washington Post story about his college thesis. Compared to an identical poll five weeks ago, the race has tightened slightly, but not dramatically.

McDonnell leads Criegh Deeds, 54% to 42%.

Key finding: ” Of those who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and who are judged by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in November 2009, 13% cross-over for McDonnell, twice the number of McCain voters who cross-over for Deeds.”

A Rasmussen poll earlier this weeks found McDonnell with a nine point lead.

this election is not going to be based on social issues its being based on economy and health care and on both issue McDonnell wins

I don’t believe in waiting until a threat has snowballed into an avalanche before terminating it.

PS: I did acknowledge that the polls so far show that the WaPo’s attempted torpedoing is not yet gaining any traction … It (perhaps most likely) might not - but then again it might.

And besides, taking out the WaPo would have ancilliary benefits far beyond assuring McDonnell’s victory. It would also terminate the WaPo’s reputation as a trusted source of news - which is an unalloyed good as far as I’m concerned.

Great diary and recommended, but one note

ZootSuit Sunday, September 6th at 10:19AM EDT (link)

It was not the “macaca” comment so much torpedoed George Allen. It was well … everything. Most notoriously was his, “I am not Jewish, my mother is not Jewish, my mother is Jewish, how dare you call my mother and me Jewish, maybe my mother is Jewish after all, no she isn’t” comments. And I want to emphasize that it wasn’t a single incident that caused Allen so much trouble: it was the personally inept was he personally handled, well again … everything. There was just something that was just unsettling about George Allen.

Indeed, I remember George Allen running an ad against Jim Webb condemning an essay or article that Webb where Webb says he was against women serving in combat. Maybe it’s my own “prejudice” that I agree with Webb that women should not serve in combat but to this day I still do not understand why Allen ran that ad. Seriously, whatever your personal thoughts and opinions on the matter, is that the type of ad that a supposedly conservative Republican should run against a supposedly liberal Democrat?

To many, it just increased a sense of uneasibess with George Allen.

The “macaca” comment just seemed to capsulate what was a growing uneasiness that even many Republicans were having with him. I lived right across the border in Maryland at the time and I know quite a few Virginian Republicans who voted for Allen and who were upset and outraged that the GOP had lost the Senate with Allen’s defeat but really didn’t seem to care that Allen was gone. Even among many of my friends who previously were toting him as a Presidential candidate for 2008.

I write this in relation to your diary because I do not think Bob McDonnell has that same type of “unsettling aura” that George Allen has. Thus, I am not the least bit surprised that the big so-called “revelation” about his thesis — which to me really isn’t a big deal at all — is having no effect on his campaign.

The issue really isn’t if more “revelations” about McDonnell arise. The real issue is how well he handles them and if (unlike George Allen) he will display solid core values that people can trust and feel comfortable with, even if they may disagree with him on a particular issue.

Although I am no longer in the area and do not keep up with Virginia politics like I once did, I have no doubt that Bob McDonnell will be fine.

need not worry about the Post and Deeds….I know they are one in the same. Deed’s is SO BAD that even with this story he doesn’t stand a chance in hell of getting near the Governor’s mansion. I am serious, people here know what’s going on and no one is biting. The Post is being ignored because everyone is aware of what they are doing and everyone knows they supported Deed’s in the primaries and know they will say go Deed’s in October in their paper. I spoke with McDonnell’s office and while they are addressing this bs in a small way they are moving forward on JOBS, TAXES and SMALLER GOVERNMENT. Deed’s is not talking about any of that which is why his numbers are so dismal and will remain so.

There is a major difference between 2006 and 2009. The Propaganda Ministry that is the MSM has exposed itself like a pervert exposing himself to a schoolyard full of children.

In 2006 there was still a semblance of Americans, not of the liberal/socialist/marxist school, who did not understand that the media has always been in the tank for the liberals/socialists/marxists. The biases had always been subtle, a word here, a phrase there.

In the elections of 2008 all the masks were dropped, like the above noted trousers. Consequently, newspapers such as the N.Y. Slimes and the Washington comPost, have seen their readerships fall like the rising unemployment rate.

In other words, they no longer “pack a punch” with anyone who is not wired into D.C., or one of the mentally unstable liberals/socialists/marxists. They are preaching to the choir.

In general, a majority of women in the United States have always voted Democrat. Elections have not been lost because Conservatives have not been able to corral enough female votes. Elections are lost when the majority of males are horn-swoggled into voting for Democrat candidates who promise to be Conservative and are believed.

With the actions of this president and congress (and the phony Blue Dogs), those days are over. The snow job is no longer working, no matter how hard the wind blows. No newspaper dares to run a poll to find out if people trust “them,” because they already know the answer.

CNN, PMSNBC, the Big 3 networks, the liberal/socialist/marxist newspapers, all of whom should properly be named The Ministry of Propaganda, not the MSM (it is too flattering), can see the handwriting on the wall.

And so can everyone else. When they “dropped their drawers” for all to see, it was at once a shock, but a lasting example of their perversion, from which they will never recover.

The Ministry of Propaganda has been hammering at the populace for months over health “care,” crap-n-tax, and porkulus. The results can be seen in the massive grassroots movements known as Tea Parties, Townhall “Mobs,” and polls that show Americans are totally fed up with the Congress, and getting more fed up daily with Brobama.

This brouhaha over nothing in the Virginia gubernatorial race will amount to the same thing. McDonnell should continue to do exactly what he is doing: concentrate on the economy, taxes, and making government significantly smaller. That is the trend. His message is getting out.

One additional point concerning George Allen and “macaca.” My recollection is that Mr. Allen spent weeks apoligizing. This gave the appearance of cowering, and that he had done “something wrong.” Had he dismissed it as the poppycock it was, and gotten on with his message, he stood a good chance of winning the election.

Once he started backing-and-filling he was totally off his “game.” In politics the perception of weakness is tantamount to being weak. Once you give an inch the enemy will take a yard, and so on, and so on …

The Ministry of Propaganda is no longer the firebreathing dragon that is was in 2006. They will never regain the power and authority they had when their views were subversively concealed. They are out in the open now, and through our own Conservative voices/media we are showing them to be the exposed perverts that they are.

McDonnell can’t take the chance the WaPo won’t have an effect. Besides, if the MSM is unmasked and laid bare after 2008, than it is paramount for McDonnell to go for the jugular. Otherwise, even an exposed, weakened media can still inflict ultimate damage.

It is about taking the fight to them, not sitting back and deflecting fast and furious. That is a losing strategy.

Key Allen error: "spent weeks apologizing"

civil_truth Saturday, September 5th at 8:09PM EDT (link)

Allen had nothing to apologize for; he should have said the truth about what he meant, said he wasn’t a racist, and asked the voters to judge him on his records and policies. He should have denied the legitimacy of the continued coverage and moved on.

However, ignoring doesn’t work; it’s like water dripping that finally breaks the rock. We saw what happened when Bush ignored the press and criticisms rather than fighting back and setting the record straight: people eventually believed the lies.

Similarly McConnell needs to set the record straight, says he has nothing to apologize for, ask people to judge him on his record and policies and move on, dismissing further harrassment as bad faith coverage and taking the battle to the media, rather than playing defense.

You set the rules of engagement, rather than letting the media set the rules. The two Cheneys are excellent examples of how to turn the table. Dick Cheney did not cower or ignore the torture charges; he fought back and reversed the tables, framing the debate in his terms and never permitted the press to define the situatioin - and threrby put the press on the defensive.

This means, for instance, challenging the questions themselves and exposing and refuting the premises behind them - which means recognizing and calling out the bad-faith behind the question - so that you get to set the term of the discussion.

It is a conundrum, but in this era of media supersaturation, you have to speak out against the lies because they will turn into big lies otherwise. But you still need to stay on message and take charge.

How to win an election in one easy lesson ...

goldenpres Saturday, September 5th at 9:27PM EDT (link)

It was the great Satchel Paige who said, “Don’t look back, somethin’ might be gainin’ on you.”

One of the key points that Martin made was that The comPost was going to, or at least try to use whatever they think they have to turn women voters against McDonnell. One of the main points I made above was that the votes of women are not going to win the election for McDonnell. The female vote has never been a strong factor in electing Conservatives. Not even Ronaldus Magmus.

It was not the female vote that was siphoned off by Perot allowing Clinton to win with 42%.

It is not hard to understand that women vote for liberals. It is hard to understand that men vote for liberals/socialists/marxists.

Rush said it best, “The Democrats wake up every morning saying, ‘how can we fool them today?’” Well, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!

It would do all Conservatives well to get over this fear of the Ministry of Propaganda. The majority of Americans who are attending Tea Parties, and who swarmed over the Town Hall meetings were not all Conservatives. Nor were they all Republicans. Many of the people featured in videos on Youtube stated, for the record, that they were Democrats.

There were also many “independents,” who we all know are really Democrats without the guts to admit it.

If the Ministry of Propaganda is so all-fired powerful, where did all these people come from? They all watch television, they all read the daily rags, so how come they didn’t buy the bullpipi dished out on a daily, even hourly basis? How come they are still not buying it?

Do not fear the Ministry of Propaganda. They are to be denigrated, just as you would denigrate the pervert exposing himself in the schoolyard. But do not get distracted from your message by sword-fighting with strawmen. Keep on keeping on. Steady as she goes. The great Seabiscuit had to wear blinders to keep his mind on the race.

More and more they are preaching to the converted, and even those numbers are dwindling in the face of reality: unemployment, recession, inflation, deficits, taxes, ad infinitum.

The drumbeat of the Ministry of Propaganda has been cacaphonic plugging their candidates for 2010, and yet most Conservative candidates are holding substantial early leads over their liberal/socialist/marxist opponents.

Well, you say, it is early. However, I beg to point out that, early or not, the Ministry of Propaganda has been constant and loud, and taken every opportunity to lambaste Conservatives. Their effect has been minimal.

George Bush was George Bush. While it is true he did not engage his opponents, he also did not make use of his bully pulpit to speak directly to the electorate and lay out his plans. This was probably due to his being a poor speaker to begin with. I do not remember Ronaldus Magmus “taking it” to his critics. He took his case to “we the people,” and we supported him to the nth degree.

I was not, and still am not, a fan of George Bush. There were too many departures from Conservatism for my liking. But that is a post for another day. Or maybe that day has long come and gone.
However, we can always quote George Santayana … “he who does not learn from history …”

Put salve on the wounds that George Bush inflicted upon us, and himself. It was not the Ministry of Propaganda that brought him down. As Shakespeare so aptly put it: The fault, dear Horatio, lies not in our stars, but in ourselves.

Stop fretting over the Ministry of Propaganda, and heave to, laddie, on getting the message out. No one is suggesting that McDonnell turn the other cheek. I am saying McDonnell will do well to not waste his time and energy, and should give them “the back of his hand.”

He has increased his lead over the past months. As election time approaches leads have a tendency to shrink a bit. This happen in almost every election, no matter who the candidates may be. Remember, there was a point, not too long ago, when Mr. Deeds was actually leading in all polls.

Look around. We are overcoming the loud daily/hourly shrieking of the many spokes of the Big Wheel of The Ministry of Propaganda. Bob McDonnell’s battle for the hearts and minds of Virginians is with Creigh Deeds, not the Washington comPost. And he is winning.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Don’t get distracted. Don’t back up. Don’t back down. And above all else …. ” … don’t look back ….”

goldenpres: This sounds all high-minded and stuff but ...

Martin Knight Saturday, September 5th at 10:27PM EDT (link)

… it’s really just advocating the “ignore it” route. The exact same route that Bush took - seeking the high road and “New Tone.” The truth of the matter is that Bush did attempt to use the Bully Pulpit to get the message out - but at no point did he directly challenge his detractors as he should have.

No one is suggesting that McDonnell turn the other cheek. I am saying McDonnell will do well to not waste his time and energy, and should give them “the back of his hand.”

You just contradicted yourself. If you’re asking McDonnell to ignore the character assassination, then you’re asking him to turn the other cheek - and as for wasting his “time and energy”, I’m of the opinion that a political campaign should be capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time.

It’s not an either/or situation with getting his message out and pounding on the mendacity of the WaPo. Embrace the healing power of “And”

Stop fretting over the Ministry of Propaganda …

I’m advocating attacking them - clearly that means they don’t scare me. And they shouldn’t scare anyone. Like I said above, given technology today, no newspaper is anyway near as powerful as they were just ten years ago. Imagine if the Reagan White House had the benefit of the internet, Fox News and Talk Radio? You think the New York Times would be left standing?

Bob McDonnell’s battle for the hearts and minds of Virginians is with Creigh Deeds, not the Washington comPost.

At this point, a distinction without a difference. Creigh Deeds is the Democrats’ flagbearer because of the WaPo. He is polling in the 40s because of the WaPo. Taking down the WaPo would hurt Deeds. Count on it.

goldenpres Saturday, September 5th at 9:44PM EDT (link)

Rod, I understand that you are riled up over this. However, let us ask ourselves a few pertinent questions.

Just exactly to whom is McDonnell going to give this message? His local newspaper? And they are going to print his rebuttal? Is he going to write an angry letter to the Washington comPost, so they can extract enough words from the context to make it seem that he assassinated Lincoln?

Perhaps you are suggesting that he go on Sean … oh my, he already did. Perhaps Laura … oh my, he already did. Has he been on with Glen Beck yet? Maybe Rush can give him some time.

Rod, we all listen to the above.

This is the typical downfall of our Conservative movement. Worried about “hitting back” at the Ministry of Propaganda. As though they are going to honestly report anything having to do with Conservatives.

Constantly trying to shame a group that knows no shame is a complete and utter waste of time. And keeps the candidate “off message.” It makes it seem like there is “something wrong.”

McDonnell should just keep taking his conservative message to the people, in any way that he can. That is what donations are for.
As I point out above, he need not worry about “alienating” the female vote. If he has to depend on them to get elected, he is done like dinner.

Well ... I'm saying his campaign should hold a Press Conference and get it on YouTube.

It has now been proven that kids raised by an organization vs their mothers suffer. The family suffers. Now many will make the trade off because of necessity and I respect that, but that shouldn’t activate the PC police and stop the truth from being told.

I believe, deep in the hearts of the women who have chosen to be mothers and career professionals, they would choose a life with their child over a life in the fast lane. Examples of this abound and should be embraced, as mothers decide to either put their careers on hold or find innovative ways to do both (like working at home).

I think America should work to find ways to make that happen, and McDonnell could go a long way with that segment of voters by advancing ideas that would give them the best of both worlds.

What a nice thought , but ...

If you put this issue on a list of issues that that are going to decide this election, and damn near all the elections yet to come, how far down the list do you think it would be?

I listed 5, or 6, above that are of major concern to voters. Even abortion would be above this. Maybe even garbage collection.

Let’s get real, and stop telling McDonnell to waste his precious time talking about something that no one even cares about.

If this is the “best” that the Ministry of Propaganda has in their arsenal, the election is all but over.

They will move no votes to the Deed’s column with this weak hogwash. Stop taking it so seriously.

When McDonnell challenges Deeds to debate, Deeds either shows up and shows himself up, or declines.

Either way, he is dead meat!

A Dowdified “Feminists…and…working women…are…detrimental…” might have been electrifying back when Clarence Thomas was being confirmed, but after eight years of feminists selling out women for the sake of Bill Clinton , and eight more years of the likes of Code Pink, and constant bombardment during that same time period about Glass Ceilings, Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, Equal Pay for Equal Work, it’s all a bit …trivial to most people right now

At least “Macaca” sounded slurrish, was directed at someone who looked sterrotypically slurrable, not some nebulous group. It was also caught on camera, not in some boring, yellowed 20-year-old pile of parchment.

I guess these fine points are too subtle for some here. As I pointed out above, McDonnell has/is currently, making the rounds of OUR outlets. He’s certainly not going to get any helpful facetime on any of THEIR outlets.

Should he decide to waste his time on THEIR outlets trying to “set the record straight,” he’ll just be opening himself up to badgering and tirades from THEIR “reporters,” making himself look like George Allen backing-and-filling.

Over an issue not even in the consciousness of any voter.

As I said, I was not/am not a fan of George Bush. Bush very seldom made himself available on OUR outlets to explain/defend himself. As OUR outlets were growing in numbers and power Bush all but ignored them. He was “above the fray,” just as McLame was not going to get “dirty.”

Each, in his way, took a beating.

McLame, who once pointed out, “Politics is not bean-bag,” ran his race as though it was. I am not a psychiatrist, so I cannot fathom why Bush acted in the manner he did, on all sorts of issues.

But the overriding motivation for both appears to have been acceptance by/fear of the Ministry of Propaganda. As seems to be true about most of the people R and D who populate D.C. However, they are beginning to discover that the REAL power is held by “we the people,” and no amount of obfuscation/shilling by the Ministry of Propaganda is going to keep them in office.

Once again, Ronaldus Magmus didn’t give a “hoo-ha” about his Ministry of Propaganda critics. He didn’t waste his time battling them. He spoke to “we the people” directly as often as he could. He gave the American people credit for having a brain.

Once a candidate steps into THEIR arena, with their referees and judges, he appears to be weak, and in politics perception is reality.

OUR outlets get the word out very well, thank you. The days of the Ministry of Propaganda influencing votes is over. A view of the polls clearly shows that “we the people” are no longer going to be hood-winked by the Ministry of Propaganda. “Fool me once … etc.”

Gotcha!, said Martin, “you contradict yourself.” Martin, I love ya’, your heart is in the right place (we are on the same side), but you gotta wake up, grow up, and stop getting distracted by the Ministry of Propaganda. They preach only to the choir and the converted.

It gets tiresome to point out that they have been shilling for every liberal/socialist/marxist candidate and program on a daily/hourly basis, and still “we the people” are in a majority revolt. Where is their vaunted power? Where is their vaunted influence?

I dislike having to use sarcasm, especially against our people, but I guess their ignoring of the Van Jones story was tremendously effective … OH, NO … he resigned? Yeah, they sure were able to save his ass. And as Gamecock Devine pointed out in a recent post, he ain’t the problem. The communist in the White House is the problem. The Ministry of Propaganda doesn’t seem to be helping him much either.

As I said above, OUR outlets do a damned good job, don’t sell them short.

McDonnell only makes a huge mistake by engaging with the Ministry of Propaganda and allowing himself to be “taken off message.”

You might be right, but remember the state he is running in

archer52 Monday, September 7th at 1:25AM EDT (link)

In one of your other posts to me you took me to task over criticizing Beck on his side trip down messages in the painting road.

Here is an example of you saying basically the same thing. Don’t focus on something that isn’t that important, focus on what people want and need.

Here I might be wrong and you might be right. The only worry I have is the state he is running in. Virginia didn’t go “Blue” by accident. It has been seeing demographic changes just like N.C. and some other formally “country” states. I believe there are a growing number of voting working women in the state, unlike twenty years ago. They will pay attention to this. My wife was a career woman for years, and worried herself silly over daycare and schooling. I decided to work nights my whole career in order to be home with the kids during the day when they were young. Then we decided to homeschool, so we continued the same schedule.

know my wife, as did her sisters and her friends, felt guilty letting a stranger raise her own child. She instinctively knew, even though it was a necessity, it was not the best thing for the child. This is about getting at the subconscious guilt they feel.

If the working women hear about this for weeks on end, which is the plan, they’ll start forming an opinion. They may revolt against him simply for reminding them of their own decision. Nobody, especially women, like getting told they are wrong.

Eventually, he is going to have to address it, and then be done with it.

My approach may be to idealistic, but son of a gun, it has been proven to be true. We have suffered as a nation because kids were left to others to raise. (And as a side note, it is part of that communist/socialist element agenda to do just that. You’ve talked about the deviousness of their ways- this is an example.)

Sure, it will be taxes this year, more importantly the spending and the lies and the economy. But McDonnell shouldn’t run from being right. Just explain it, flip it into something good and move on.

Like simplifying taxes and deregulating?

Uma Richie Sunday, September 6th at 12:02AM EDT (link)

Archer, I like your train of thought, and I don’t think attracting the mom vote requires a new set of issues.

For example, I suspect that most working mothers would prefer to have a nanny instead of dragging their children out of bed and exposing them to all sorts of nasty germs five days a week. I also suspect that most childcare workers would prefer to make the same amount of money that they do in the daycare center but have a simpler job with a single family. Others would like to watch a few children in their own homes, but cannot get past the necessary red tape to set up shop.

Unfortunately, if you want to hire a nanny, you have to get an EIN and withhold payroll taxes for Federal, State, and Local. It’s a huge hassle, and the amount of money you pay is a lot more than the nanny’s hourly wage. By the same token, if someone wants to watch children in his/her own home, he/she is subject to all sorts of regulations. (In PA, you need a certified lifeguard for a baby pool in a four-child home care setting.)

So yes, American children are being packed off to large daycare centers at very young ages when their mothers would prefer to be home with them, or would prefer that a trusted caregiver is home with them, or would prefer that they are comfortable in a home setting with two or three other children. Unfortunately, regulation and Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment, and Workers Comp laws have made that very difficult and expensive.

I agree with Martin. Plus, the WaPo is a good target now

smagar Sunday, September 6th at 8:58AM EDT (link)

I’ll bet that many Virginians, to include a fair number of Northern Virginians, are losing their enchantment with The One. I’ll also bet that many Virginians are starting to stagger in shock as they see what the Democrats are really doing with Congress, now that they’re in complete control.

Four things have put the WaPo in a weakened position:

1) The salons issue should make quite a few Virginians question the integrity and impartiality of the Washington Post.
2) The WaPo was a huge cheerleader for Barack Obama, whose poll numbers are slipping.
3) Print newspapers in general are losing ground.
4) A quality conservative paper has arisen in DC—the Examiner—which can’t be passed off as a Moonie paper. Now, WaPo-doubting readers have an alternative paper to read—and subscribe to.

IMO McDonnell should pound on these WaPo weak points in the months ahead. If the WaPo is on defense, it can’t devote as much effort as it would like to offense.

McDonnell could do the following things:

- IIRC, large parts of the WaPo’s market use coal-fired plants for electricity. Do you remember exhaustive WaPo coverage of Obama’s campaign comments about new coal plants being bankrupted? I don’t. McDonnell should ask, loudly and often, why the WaPo downplayed that. He should also observe that, by downplaying it, the WaPo staff de facto decided that it was OK for DC-area energy rates to skyrocket…and then wonder aloud why they arrogated that power to themselves.
- Use Van Jones as evidence that the WaPo doesn’t want to dig into stories that embarass Democrats. He should ask, loudly and often, how the WaPo could NOT have known about Mr. Jones’ many shenanigans. The audience will draw the obvious conclusion—the WaPo knew but chose to keep silent.
- Now would be a good time to remark on how little coverage the WaPo gave to the Obama campaign’s delibate manipulation of its online donation software, which allowed illegal donations from overseas. McDonnell could make the case that one reason so many sitting R House Reps lost their seats in 2008 was the flood of $$$ the Dems could spray around. Those extra House Dems made Nancy Pelosi even more powerful—and look where that got us.
- When asked why the WaPo hates him so much, jokingly reply that the WaPo publishers figured they could get a much better salon deal with Creigh Deeds in the VA statehouse. Then, educate the audience on exactly what the WaPo did in its aborted salon deals.

I think that McDonnell has enough ammo to put some serious dents in the WaPo’s armor. Seeing as he’s ahead, he doesn’t need to sink the Post; he only needs to suppress it until November.

I find your amazing inability to comprehend that McDonnell and his campaign can pound on the WaPo and on Creigh Deeds (one and the same) at the same time hard to credit as sincere.

Perhaps you don’t understand; we’re tired of getting hit and not hitting back because people like you have elevated taking abuse into some mark of virtue. I personally do not see the difference between what you’re advocating and the approach Bush took that you claim to abhor.

The WaPo tried (is trying) to conduct a political assassination to benefit their chosen candidate. It is blatant enough and the resources are available to make it beyond easy to tie it all together and present it to the people of Virginia.

Doing this would have repercussions beyond just this race and Virginia. It would put many papers on notice that they can no longer hide behind the mask of objectivity while serving as launchpads for partisan attacks and expect to be treated as non-combatants.

I don’t particularly know why you’re so anxious that the WaPo should escape the consequences of their actions. And quite frankly, I don’t care.

conservative bona fides against mine … bring it on! I am slightly to the right of Rush, and have a looooong history of conservative activism behind me, among many names you might even know … going back to Barry Goldwater for whom I worked in Arizona.

That would be back in 1964. Just how long have you been an activist conservative?

Other than your dopey suggestion that Mr. McDonnell call a press conference and “put it on Youtube,” where are your other suggestions for how he might waste his time?

How are you planning to make him NOT look like he “did something wrong” and is now having to “explain himself?”

Because we disagree about the relative power of the Washington comPost, simply means that we advocate different strategies. Did you ever see The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly?

At the end there is a 3-way shootout. The Man With No Name takes out Angel Eyes, without even checking to see what Tuco is going to do. Why? Because he handed Tuco an unloaded gun. He knew who the real enemy was that could do him damage.

You talk about “consequences” for the comPost. What consequences? Are you going to shut them down? Are you going to picket outside their headquarters? Are you going to institute a boycott and get the committed liberals/socialists/communists to stop buying their rag?

Just exactly what are these “consequences?”

If you want to talk about George Bush and his vapid policy of “non-confrontation,” I will email you my telephone number and give you an earful. Not just about that, but also his profligate spending, arm-twisting to get conservatives to go along (thereby causing tremendous losses in the last 2 elections), his absolutely insane “immigration” policies, his “reaching across the aisle” to work out bills with unrepentant socialists/communists, his non-veto of the McLame-Feingold hijack of the 2nd Amendment, his attempt to put Harriet Whats-Her-Name on the Supreme Court, ad infinitum.

Don’t tell me about his stupid policy of “non-confrontation.” That ain’t all that caused his falling numbers. You can’t fathom the number of rock-ribbed conservatives, like myself, who understood by 2002 that “compassionate conservatism” was just another way to say “liberal,” and didn’t like it one damned bit.

And exactly

If my obvious position on all of the above doesn’t speak for my rabid conservatism, then you are someone who just “does not wish to see.” As I stated, I’ll match my bona fides against your every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

You wrote a nice piece. I disagree with how you want McDonnell to spend his time. I gave facts to back up my opinion. Many of them. You, on the other hand, give vitriol, wild ranting, and NO FACTS.

I showed you the ultimate weakness of the Washington comPost, and all the other outlets of The Ministry of Propaganda, example after example. Where are the examples of their power to turn elections? George Allen in 2006? A man who backed-and-filled for weeks on end, showing his weakness, and giving the perception of a cowering cur?

Brobama? Are you of the opinion that if a REAL conservative had been running against him Brobama would not have had his clock cleaned?

If so, my friend, than you are farther to the left than I am!

I hear and see your bile. It is not misplaced. The Ministry of Propaganda is despicable. They have been this way since the turn of the 20th century. Now, though, it is no longer an inside-the-beltway secret. Now, EVERYBODY knows who they are and what they stand for. If you are not a card-carrying liberal/socialist/communist then you give them no credence.

As I stated, I have given example after example above as to why McDonnell should not waste his precious time. You want to punish the Washington comPost, where are your plans. To re-iterate just exactly how are you going to mete out this punishment?

I am more than willing to get behind any plan you have to punish them. In fact, I’ll be the point man. Let’s hear it.

It is apparent that you are one of the clique on this site, so you have no fear of dismissing out-of-hand anyone who disagrees with you, without engaging them in discourse to convince them of your position.

Gee, kind of like the inside the beltway D.C. bunch, don’t you think?

My wife predicted that I would be banned within one week of posting here, because I DO NOT PLAY NICE. Contrary to your stated idiocy about my not wanting to engage. I will engage with anyone, anywhere, any time, on any level they invite.

I will engage with words, fists, knives, or guns. You call it. But don’t run away like a scared little girl.

If you disagree with me that is certainly your prerogative. But don’t you ever again dismiss me with “I don’t care,” because I warn you upfront, I am not as civilized as you think.

I have treated you with respect, even though I disagreed with your opinion. I require the same. If you can’t bring yourself to do that, then perhaps we should meet somewhere and settle it like gentlemen.

As I said, you make the call.

You need to drop it, goldenpres, and moderators need to check in

You are beginning to look like someone who has way, way too much time on his hands, and way, way too high an opinion of himself. Martin is a long time poster that also happens to be one, if not, the best. Your wife was right about your banning, but not because you fancy yourself some internet tough guy. It’s going to be because you are a flaming asshole.

As far as meeting somewhere and settling it like gentlemen, that is where I will gladly put my bona fides up against yours. So as far as “making the call”, I am in. You name the place and time, and my apologies to Martin for butting in line.

Okay, Jack, where are you?

Perhaps you do not comprehend the concept of me not caring.

Martin Knight Monday, September 7th at 12:57AM EDT (link)

Part of that means that I simply do not care enough about your opinion to want to “settle it” with some Johnny-come-lately internet Rambo.

{shrug}

That’s my call.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it.

I'd say your wife is quite likely to be correct. [nt]

I doubt you could pick a gentleman out of a two-man line up, much less settle something like one

No apologies necessary, Jack.

Martin Knight Monday, September 7th at 12:49AM EDT (link)

You talk about “consequences” for the comPost. What consequences? Are you going to shut them down? Are you going to picket outside their headquarters? Are you going to institute a boycott and get the committed liberals/socialists/communists to stop buying their rag?

Just exactly what are these “consequences?”

The limitations of your imagination are not my concern. If you can’t see it at this point, and if you’d notice, everyone else can … and I’d bet everyone who remembers the LA Times’ Schwarzenegger “groping” story just five days before the Recall election can as well, then you’re not going to see it.

I really do not think it necessary to have to spell it out for you.

First, an apology ...

goldenpres Monday, September 7th at 6:09AM EDT (link)

Jack is quite right … too much time on my hands.

I apologize for the boorish behavior. Totally uncalled for.

Second, it is true you do not have to care what I think, or what my opinion is. I would undoubtedly react the same way were I on the other side of the discussion.

posts on this subject.

But let’s get to it …

To whom is McDonnell going to tell “his side of the story?” Exactly where are his comments going to be printed? Exatcly what are the outlets that he has not already used?

Show me the elections that were turned by The Ministry of Progaganda? Be specific. Show me their power and punch.

You’ve got a big mouth, let’s see the facts to back it up.

How, exactly, are you going to make McDonnell not seem like he is “defending himself?” How are you going to neutralize the perception that he “did something wrong,” and now has to “explain himself?” How are you going to make it look like he is not “being defensive?”

Read above, and you will see that George Bush was the problem, not The Ministry of Propaganda. He gave them tons of ammunition to use against him. And, after alienating conservatives over and over again, there were no voices raised to defend him.

Also, Bush had the bully pulpit, which he chose not to use. Instead, we got Rush trying to prop him up, and wondering all the while why he wasn’t doing it himself. Now that he is no longer beholden to Bush, Cheney is right out in front, wacking the enemy at every turn.

This “all powerful” Ministry of Propaganda has had their guns trained on Cheney, and Lynn, for months. Both of their popularity ratings have risen. Where are your facts that show otherwise?

McDonnell has no such platform, even in Virginia, should he decide that he wants to look like a cowering wimp.

There are numerous examples above of how the Ministry of Propaganda is failing to sell this administrations policies to the American people, despite their wall-to-wall efforts to do so.

Where are your examples otherwise?

None of you on this site is more of a fire-breathing conservative than I am. Vitriol and bile are wonderful. They provide an adrenalin rush that helps one to accomplish things.

But without being channeled into DOING SOMETHING, something specific, something of substance, they are just wild rantings.

You are certainly entitled to rant, and rave, and I have defended, in REAL war, with REAL guns and REAL bullets, your right to do so, but don’t mistake that for a “strategy” with which to win elections.

I admire someone who is willing to tote a shotgun. I admire more someone who is willing to USE it!
