Left & David Frum (BIRM): If Bill Doesn’t Work, Blame GOP!

As everyone knows, liberals are far from fans of accountability, responsibility, etc. or any other concept that suggests being held to account for their words and actions. A few days ago, Thomas Frank (of “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” fame) writing in his WSJ Tilting Yard column was obviously in a state of high dudgeon at the Texas State Board of Education’s stipulation that High School students be required to also look at the unintended consequences of LBJ’s Great Society reforms when studying that era.

In the aftermath of the Democrats handing 1/6th of the economy over to their buddies in the public employee unions – through which taxpayer dollars would be laundered back to their campaign coffers, Megan McArdle [HT: Ace], Obama-voter though she was, proposes to use the statistics (inflated and false though most of them are) the proponents of Government healthcare cited in favor of the legislation as measurements via which the effectiveness of the legislation would be measured.

I heard a lot about the 20-45,000 people who were dying from lack of insurance every year. I heard about how US mortality indicators lagged behind the rest of the developed world. I heard about infant mortality. I heard, over and over again, about medical bankruptcies, and how medical bills were bankrupting America. I heard about the CBO score that said this bill would be deficit neutral. Let me know if I’ve missed anything, but it seems to me that mortality, financial protection, and deficit-improvement were the three major planks upon which this bill was sold.

Forgive me, but to my admittedly naive ears, this sounds like what you are saying is that you think that if we cover the uninsured, we will have lower mortality rates, fewer medical bankruptcies, and a lower deficit.

If you don’t think that any of the effects of this bill will be large enough to measure and hopefully, large enough to justify the price tag of this bill, then I have to ask two questions:

  1. Why the hell are we spending $200 billion a year, plus the mandated spending by individuals and employers on premiums, plus the new money the states will have to spend on Medicaid?
  2. Why on earth did you bring up all these apparently irrelevant statistics?

And of course, this has every liberal who cited all those statistics at “The Atlantic” as alarmed as Thomas Frank at the prospect of Texas high school students actually examining the results of liberal “reforms”. All of a sudden those are not reasonable metrics, and it is now unrealistic (even “racist(!)” to demand some way of measuring, or even just use the metrics they pushed to pass this bill, whether Obamacare would result in better quality and access to healthcare for the American people.

However, the most interesting counter-charge by McArdle’s opponents is to echo the media’s newest tame pet “Republican” David Frum and shift the blame to the GOP. The argument goes that if any of the benefits promised by the proponents of this legislation fails to materialize, the responsibility is entirely on the GOP for not signing up to place a cherry on top of the turd pile.

There is a reason Robert Gibbs was jabbering happily about Frum’s latest gift to his new masters. With the media sure to echo this same absurd narrative as premiums rise, wait times increase and businesses close, this could be a viable line of attack.

In other words, there is no profit, political or otherwise is trying to fix this bill, it is flawed from its core and cannot be fixed. Therefore there should no equivocation by any Republican, no matter how “moderate” about the need to repeal this legislation. It must be repealed in its totality even if entirely along partisan lines and using every underhanded parliamentary trick – if it can be passed thus, it can be repealed thus.

Remember, our goal is to have a Republican Senate Majority Leader and a Republican House Speaker have a bill repealing this abortion (and perhaps even replacing it with something sane) waiting for the new Republican President on his desk in the Oval Office by 12:01pm 1/20/2013.

The real battle here is between two theories of who the American people have become. The nation is not the same as it was when I was a child and certainly not the America my father knew.

The left is hanging their approach on the fact that people are basically uniformed, lazy and not willing to sacrifice any of the “free stuff” they get from the government. There is certainly an element of that in our nation, bred, welfared, unionized and coddled for generations. Then there are the government workers who really like their new high paying secure job and don’t want that gravy train to stop. These are big big sectors of the population. They all may know at an instinctive level what the leaders are doing is wrong, but they don’t want o rock THEIR boat to stop it. Typical human behavior.

The right hopes vague and untaught, not experienced moral concepts will carry the day. Honor, civic duty, sacrifice, honesty and good moral judgment are the values the average person had SIXTY years ago, but not today.

They have a clearer shot at the eight ball. We have at least two banks to make it. Now that it is past, the law will be championed as the end all, and anyone trying to stop it is a bad guy or will be responsible for its failure. The Dems aren’t stupid, just the people they manipulate. Watch the Rep establishment fold instead of risk being cast out, further, if that is possible.

Who they picked as their ‘dear leader’, it’s so much easier to explain this all away as racism.

      • conservos

They knew this as the “offended minority” climbed those Congressional steps to sign away American freedom.

The Race Card was clearly played — over-hyped and over-trumped — in the media.

I have yet to hear one “So what — that *may* have been one in tens, hundreds of thousands of teapartiers.. have you forgotten the American public at home who despises this bill??” in a commanding “shut up” tone.

How is being labed a racist not hate speech?

        Untouchable.

        • treeofliberty

As someone who has personally witnessed leftist anti war demonstrations when I was in college, I can tell you without a doubt, unequivocally , that the Tea Party crowd were/are absolute models of restraint and uber politeness compared to what I saw with my own two eyes from the hate-America crowd.

Comparing all Republicans to Nazis, calling police and soldiers “pigs” and “baby killers”, card carrying communists preaching open revolution, profanity laced chants, defaming the US flag with corporate symbols and swastikas….well you get the idea. Thus I find it hilarious when the media starts making a fuss over what one person *may* have said to a corrupt Demorat with absolutely no evidence to support it.

Meanwhile the media treated these anti war demonstrations with kid gloves, I saw things there that were bordering on treason (I don’t use that word lightly) and the media either underplayed it or ignored it completely.

So that’s why I have little patience for the MSM’s new found concern for “civility”. I know what leftists do at their “rallies” and there is simply no comparison at all. None.

For the leftists politicians to even be able to open their mouths and demand apologies (for non-existent/unproven allegations) without bursting in hysterical laughter is something I’ll never be able to fully understand.

People could already get these things free though it might be a bit harder to access if you’re in rural areas.

Nashville has walk-in clinics all over the area that treat people by fees based on income. Hospitals do not turn people away from the emergency rooms by federal mandate.

I’m sure there are similar setups in other cities. What the Dems promised but will never be able to deliver is the same health care the politicians experience. It’s just not going to happen.

Those clinics I mentioned above are partially funded with our tax dollars. I’ve used them, myself, at low points though I never asked for the income based fee;always paid the full price which was still lower than that of a doctor’s office. They aren’t pretty and can be quite incompetent at times. Nobody wants to use them for longer than necessary, that’s for sure.

20-45,000 will still die every year like always because at some point there really is nothing left that can be done. Some just don’t want to accept their own mortality and I expect I’ll be just as denying when I get to that point at least until I make peace with it. Some never make peace with it and that’s the bunch that are hollering for more because they think “if only” but it isn’t better treatment that’s going to save them.

They forget that doctors can’t cure everything and expect miracles when there are none. Anybody who is incapacitated to point of not being able to take care of oneself gets government assistance. If they don’t , I’d like to know why our Congressional leaders haven’t fixed that.

Instead, what this was all about is creating a permanent underclass. That’s the future unless we repeal and start over.

there are already a lot of heath care services in place. When my adult son had some issues I was frantic to get him care. I couldn’t find a doc who would take him on a cash basis. I vented about it at another board and someone emailed me, that if you apply to a number of insurance companies and are turned down, you can apply for medicare.

We never tested it out, but she said she had done it with a pre-existing condition. I think a lot of this “we have no health care” is them being lazy and not finding health care. It’s there, you just need to do the leg work to get. A friend of mine’s daughter was just beaten up by her bf, nearly broke her back. She has no insurance (kids!!) and went to the state and applied for Medicaid. She’s now getting help.

Geeze people, you want us to come and hand feed you as well!!!

  • Scope

is going to be trying to sell something that takes the freebies away from a large section of society, that is now quite happy with what they believe is free stuff from the government. Any Republican trying to push cuts in any of the entitlements will be met with immediate disdain, and tagged as the uncaring, hard cold Republicans. Look at how Paul Ryans plan was disparaged, even by the moderate Republicans. Americans want honesty and truthfullness from candidates. I don’t condone dishonesty, but, entitlement cuts should not be the Republicans message. Just as the Progressives, and Obama, never spelled out this drastic course when they were campaigning, the Republican’s need to downplay entitlement reform. That message is going to be hard to pull off, as there are many that are screaming for reforms, while others want more.

I’ve noticed the Progressives new talking points for Obamacare. A few of them on FOX yesterday, when asked about the Republican push for repeal, asked if the Republicans want to stop pre-existing condition reforms in the bill, or do Republicans really want to stop this or that that were Republican positions. Cornyn hurt the Republicans when he agreed that some things in the bill are good, and should be left alone. He more or less agreed with their talking points.

    • conservos

I’m embarrased he’s from my state.

Where the hell is the Republican leadership on this?

Why isn’t there a cohesive message?

What’s it going to take to get everyone behind the “Repeal Only” message?

      • Woo_girl

We have to start hammering away at the RNC about what we want. We also need to encourage those already speaking out and remind those who aren’t they will be up for re-election some day and we’ll be waiting for them. Remind them we hold the magic money bomb in our hands.

        • conservos

          Find him, tell him something.

          I did.

It may get wiped, but that’s on his bill to control.

Public *embarrassment*, let him feel it.

      • davesinsanantonio

But he is just one of several. The problem with Rep leadership today is that they are just as arrogant as the Demrats, but quieter about it. They just “know” they are smarter than us and entitled to be in charge. In fact, they get along better with those “across the aisle” than they do with their constituents, because they both are from the priveleged political class and are our “betters”. So, we have to keep the pressure on all the time. We have to inundate them with our message and warn them that we will work for and donate to their opponents in the primaries until we either get rid of them or they actually begin to represent us. We have to remind them of the principles that created this great country, and that any movement away from those principles will cost them in the primaries. Then, we have to support them in the general elections if it comes to that, because as bad as they sometimes are, they are better than the Dems.

        • eburke

posts some of their staffers here dressing down us hayseed hicks for our lack of understanding and knowledge of how power really works in Washington.

Kinda like the a@@-hat before the Christmas Eve vote who was sanctimoniously and arrogantly taking us to task for excoriating Mitch for not pursuing a scorched-earth strategy. His ‘trump’ jab was that Mitch had secured a vote on an ‘embarrassing debt ceiling raise’ and concluded by saying ‘you’ll never know how much the Dems gave up for that Christmas Eve vote.’

Yeah, Mr. Smarter than Everyone Else in the Room, they gave up so much that *we* now have socialized health care.

These guys make me want to puke.

If the objective is to make Mitch McConnell majority leader, count me out. If McCain had won, we would have already had something like Bennett-Wyden with Mitch McConnell leading bi-partisan support.

  • http://beaglescout.wordpress.com Beaglescout

It seems pretty clear to me that Progressives are weak on results. They have ideologically based plans that are not tethered to the real world and have never been. If we can convince Republicans to hammer them on the results of their plans compared to the promises for their plans then we can destroy their credibility with the people, and even in the media. This is why progressives are so upset at McArdle’s proposal. They know it’s a weak point in their history that will never be fixed.

The facts are conservative. Time to start pointing out the facts.

  • trutexan

are the disenchanted voters that are leaving coffins on lawns and cutting gas lines? Honestly, that sounds more like something they would do rrather than a conservative. We just don’t operate like that as was so eloquently said in a post earlier this week.

It wouldn’t surprise me a bit to find out they are the culprits of these ugly backlash activities. But of course, Republicans will be blamed for them and when proven otherwise, the MSM won’t cover it.

  • dudette

mischief is enough and to simply say that is not what we do and then drop it. The libs hope that throwing it up in people’s faces over and over will make it somehow stick to tea partyers, Republicans, whatever…..we have to ignore it after denying and condemning it ONCE. BTW does anybody know–if we have both Senate and House during o-hole”s term can we not repeal by overriding the presidential veto w/ 2/3 majority in each house or have i forgotten my civics lesson?

    • Doc Holliday

We better be prepared for it. I think we need Breitbart to uncover a false flag op, that will taint them. These people have nothing, and when you have nothing you make stuff up.

They can’t defend statism, they can’t understand those that love freedom, so they must libel them. I am not saying some nuts are not acting like jerks. I am saying the left and MSM CAN do a lot of damage with this and they WANT to!

  • http://aposematic.wordpress.com aposematic

    This is what will happen:

In 2010 elections, the Demonkrats will run saying the Republicans want to take away your healthcare…Greayson’s kill you theme (really it is the Demonkrats that will do that)!

When all of the bad this takeover will do such as higher premiums, longer waits for care, less doctors, fines, and IRS withholding from paychecks for deathcare; the Demonkrats will blame all of this bad stuff on those terrible Republicans that stopped them from going far enough to make this monster work right. The Marxist State Owned Media will back them up with more lies and condemnations of Republicans.

Demonkrats will continue and increase their lying attacks on America’s citizens in the Tea Party Groups.

There is no evil the Demonkrats will not use to win and demonize their opposition.

Stay strong and we will defeat these Marxists!

  • rickindenver

I believe that the dems have left there right flank vulnerable. They did not provide the funds for the IRS to implement enforcement. Senate republicans must do every thing they can to see to it that the IRS remains unfunded! I would rather be the warrior charging head long into battle covered in mud and blood with burning MSM arrows protruding from my shield than a coward lying down and playing dead (loser David Frumm)!

As everyone knows, liberals are far from fans of accountability, responsibility, etc. Martin Knight – Red State. As ‘everyone knows’? Not exactly.

I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations in examples of justice and liberality.” George Washington, 1790

What President Roosevelt is leading (New Deal) is not liberalism.
    President Herbert Hoover – Sept. 29, 1938

As a a Liberal, Churchill was committed to free trade, free markets and a government that interfered as little as possible in the lives of british subjects.
Walter Russell Mead – May 2002

” There is nothing liberal about these people.” (Democrats and the Left) David Horowitz, Glenn Beck Show Sept. 4, 2009.

The Democrats blame every problem we have on conservatives. You blame every problem on a liberalism that does not even exist in the real world. If you don’t stop your are going to split the Republican Party futher than just creating the Libertarian Party. Rush Limbaugh, Mar 26, claims liberals are part of a group that uses assination as a political tool. Again, just nonsense that needs to stop if we are to survive the socialist unconstitutional programs of the Democrats and many Republicans that support programs like the prescription drug bill.

    From The GLobe and Mail:

“David Frum, the Canadian-born conservative pundit who has been harshly critical of the Republican battle plan against President Barack Obama’s health-care overhaul, is unapologetic after being fired Thursday from a right-wing think tank.

?I’m going to remain a conservative whether they want me or not,? Frum told The Canadian Press on Thursday night following his ouster from the American Enterprise Institute,..
