From today’s New York Times.
By way of introduction, the article, on page 1 of the World section, is written by Dexter Filkins. Mr. Filkins is no novice to Iraq, he actually lived there for three years after Saddam went away so he knows from whence he speakith. And please, read the whole article. It’s a fairly long read, but you’ll savor every second of it.
Just a taste of the article.
When I left Iraq in the summer of 2006, after living three and a half years here following the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s regime, I believed that evil had triumphed, and that it would be many years before it might be stopped. Iraq, filled with so many people living so close together, nurturing dark and unknowable grievances, seemed destined for a ghastly unraveling.
And now, in the late summer of 2008, comes the calm. Violence has dropped by as much as 90 percent. A handful of the five million Iraqis who fled their homes — one-sixth of all Iraqis — are beginning to return. The mornings, once punctuated by the sounds of exploding bombs, are still. Is it possible that the rage, the thirst for revenge, the sectarian furies, have begun to fade? That Iraqis have been exhausted and frightened by what they have seen?
“We are normal people, ordinary people, like people everywhere,” Aziz al-Saiedi said to me the other day, as we sat on a park bench in Sadr City, only recently freed from the grip of the Mahdi Army. The park was just a small patch of bare ground with a couple of swing sets; it didn’t even have a name, yet it was filled to the bursting. “We want what everyone else wants in this world,” he said.
Just one more snip, from Filkins interview with General Ray Ordieno…
For reasons that are obvious — as a soldier, [General Ordieno] takes orders from America’s civilian leaders — the general was less than precise on how he saw it all unfolding.“If the next president changes the mission, then I have to figure out,” General Odierno said, stopping himself. “You know, whoever that may be.”
Now let’s see. When asked who they would turn to for advice the answers were:
-
John McCain: General Petraeus.
-
Barack Obama: My wife Michelle.
Need we discuss exactly what is at stake here?

How would you feel...
liberalrepublican (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 12:54PM EDT (link)If Obama made Patraeus his Secretary of State?
“Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. … including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy”
Utterly opposed.
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 1:16PM EDT (link)Very, very bad choice.
First of all, there is no chain of command at State. State has an entrenched faction of uber-liberals and internationalists who run the bureaucracy without regard to who sits at the top floor of Foggy Bottom. General Petraeus would be overwhelmed by people ignoring his direction and he would have no action available to correct the situation. Unfortunately, he would not have the ability to bomb and strafe Foggy Bottom. (And that is not meant metaphorically)
Secondly, he would be a member of a Marxist Administration and his job would rightly be to serve the whims and policy directives of that Administration. Being an honorable man – unlike certain other recent Secretaries of State I can think of – he would attempt to do so.
Altogether a bad idea. Secretary of Defense is equally bad, also not legal for him.
Some Clintonista
SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 1:22PM EDT (link)The majority of Obama’s cabinet will be Clintonistas of some flavor or not.
The loony Left will want their share of the spoils, and the first test will be how many power spots they get.

I'd love to see General Petraeus on the national stage.
nogyro35 (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 1:28PM EDT (link)However, the Democrats would use his popularity, not his talents.
An officer like Gen. Petraeus would never have received a leadership role, or his 4th star, under an Obama administration. The qualities that make him a great military commander are not the qualities liberal Democrats look for in their military officers.
I am no expert on this. It is just something I’ve observed having served under both Democrats and Republicans.
I don't know...
liberalrepublican (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:04PM EDT (link)Point 1 – Don’t underestimate the General. I personally believe that he is more responsible for victory in Iraq than the surge of troops.
Point 2 – He has been vocally non-partisan and is a patriot. I can’t image him turning down the President – even if he didn’t agree with him.
I would love to see it.
I believe that if Obama wins, he will make some high profile R’s as appointments and one of the stories of his early admin will be the utter frustration of the KOS kids.
“Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. … including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy”
He is a military man.
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:17PM EDT (link)He follows orders. It’s a genetic thing with him, a matter of honor.
Frankly, I could easily see him turning down an offer from a man so devoid of any sense of honor, ethics or responsible behavior as is Obama. No Republican should accede to serve in an Obama Administration and if one does, he should be tossed from the Party.
I would be greatly disappointed in the General if he accepted any job with BO.
So...
liberalrepublican (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:18PM EDT (link)Party over country, comrade?
“Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. … including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy”
That's an underhanded comment LibRep
Vegas_Rick (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:26PM EDT (link)Any conservative Republican who supported an Obama administration would not be putting country first.
It’s going to take all of our energy to stop the spread of socialism, and I don’t think Repubs will be able to do it from the inside.
mbecker’s right. Once he;’s out of uniform, Gen. Petraeus won’t give Nobama the time of day.

I am talking Sec of State...
liberalrepublican (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:29PM EDT (link)And how have the R’s in the Bush admin done on the question of socialism?
We still live in a dangerous world and if a man like General Patraeus can keep this country safer as part of an Obama admin, I am all for it.
“Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. … including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy”
Honor first.
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:30PM EDT (link)Why would a man who’s spent his life in the military want to serve someone who is planning on gutting the military, who has a lifetime record of disgust for the military, who will put the wishes of the EU and the UN over the national security interests of the US.
This is nothing more than a stupid, liberal wet dream calculated to buy BO some credibility where he deserves none and has none. If the American people are dumb enough to vote this bastard into the Oval Office, let him fail with his fellow travelers, we should not be supporting anything he does and we should do everything possible to undermine and end his Presidency as soon as possible.
You just have no clue as to the culture of State.
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 2:34PM EDT (link)And you seem to have no clue as to how the Dems would use the General.
It’s an utterly crappy idea, and the discussion of it is simply creepy.
The current "R's" have made some socialist moves
Vegas_Rick (Diary) Saturday, October 25th at 3:13PM EDT (link)Compassionate conservatism is a sell-out. If we win or lose this year, we MUST work to get rid of the chicken s**t mushy middle.
However, having a socialst White House, a socialist congress and a liberal supreme court would be soooooo much worse.
As to General Petraeus. He is a man of honor and principle. He has been dissed by the Messiah more than once. So don’t hold your freakin’ breath.
