This crisis has been going on for some time (the government actually shut down in '06 for a couple of weeks, California-style), and is just now being looked at seriously by the emergent Republican wing of the New Progressive Party (which only happened because the Dems don't have a stranglehold on that party). The new governor was elected by this coalition, and now he's trying to give government employees a haircut (boo-hoo).
