Conservative Support for Gay Scouts….
The Boy scouts of America have voted to admit openly gay youths into their ranks and I (knowing full well that I stand alone amongst Conservatives) support their decision. Before you grab your pitchforks and petition Erick Erickson to remove me from Red State, I would respectfully request that you take the time to understand why I take this position.
This may initially confuse you, so I urge you to read my entire rant. I am a Five-Point Calvinist, which if you haven’t heard, is considered by most to be a heretical, cultish, hyper-conservative, gay hating, funeral protesting sect of Christianity. I can assure you that I’m none of those things but I’m not going to defend the Doctrines of Grace in this article. I do, however, want to set the stage for who I am and what I believe.
I believe in the Total Depravity of humanity. I believe we are all radically broken in some aspect of our nature. My Pastor would say that men are generally plagued by Lust and Anger. I would agree, since I tend to struggle with both. Lust can manifest in a variety of flavors. For me, Lust manifests in a very standard attraction to hyper-sexualized images of women. In some men (and women) it surfaces as a broken attraction to the same sex.
So, to summarize, I consider Homosexuality to be a broken sexuality, a result of the fallen nature of man-kind. I consider Homosexual acts to be outward manifestation of “feeling homosexual” or “desiring Homosexual interaction”.
In the same sense, I consider Lust to be a broken aspect of our sexuality, a result of the fallen nature of man-kind. I consider all sex outside of a Godly heterosexual union to be the outward manifestation of “feeling Lustful” or “desiring sexual interaction”.
I do not believe Homosexuality deserves a more severe condemnation than Lust, or any other sin for that matter. (Except for the unforgivable sin of Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.)
At this point, I should still be in agreement with most Protestants. (Most Liberals probably consider me the same flavor of Bigot they’ve always stigmatized Christians as.) So why, oh, why would I support the Boy scouts of America allowing gay youths to infiltrate their ranks?
I’ll tell what my reasons are NOT before I tell you what they are. I do NOT believe it’s about civil liberty. Nobody has a civil right to join the Boy scouts. You are invited to join at the pleasure of the organization. The two concepts are polar opposites.
I also do NOT believe that Homosexuality should be supported or condoned by any organization that cites religious freedom to justify their exclusivity.
Here is why I DO support the Boy scouts of America in their decision to allow gay youths to join:
The BSOA is NOT a Christian organization. I know, I’ve upset you. Breathe. BREATHE! Now, let me ask you a few questions.
1.> Is it a requirement for every Boy Scout to be a Christian?
If you answered “yes”, then I’d like you to consider that a Christian is defined as a person who has reached the age of accountability and has made a public profession of faith through Baptism by submersion and has henceforth joined a ministry and is producing the fruit of Christian life by always, and foremost, honoring God.
So again, is it a requirement for every Boy Scout to be a Christian? The answer is “no”. The organization promotes Christianity, but it does NOT require it. Atheists are allowed to join, as are Christ denying Muslims and Jews. Faith is preferred and promoted, but NOT required.
2.> Which sin, as described by Christ, is unforgivable?
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ came by the power of the Holy Spirit and anyone who denies Christ will be condemned. Period.
Does the Boy Scout organization reject children from atheist families? Jewish families? Muslim families? Of course not.
3.> If those who deny Christ are allowed to join, but those who are gay cannot, can we honestly call the Boy scouts of America a Christian organization? Does your Church appoint atheists or Muslims as Elders? Does it even allow them to join? Of course not.
Following this line of reason, I have no choice but to conclude that the exclusion of homosexuals is NOT about honoring God, but rather about honoring “self”. If it was about God, we would exclude everyone who wasn’t at least on the fast-track to Baptism. End of story.
Have you ever heard of the Christian Boys Brigade? It’s a scout organization that pre-dates the Boy scouts of America and it demands that all its scouts are confirmed Christians. Food for thought.
I can say it no better than this: The victory for the Gay agenda is nobody else’s fault but your own (points at hypocritical Christians). If you were more concerned with honoring God, you wouldn’t have to send your kids to a secular scout organization that loosely promotes conservative values by allowing prayer and the mention of God.
The Boy scouts of America are not Christian and until they are, we have zero moral ground to assert the exclusion of homosexuals.
Have a nice weekend. Mr. Erickson, I hope I can elicit a response from you. This is a topic that requires discussion within the faith community.
