waited in line to enter the United States. Although my family immigrated from Ireland 100 years ago, and my husband's family came over in the 1880s, although we are tax-paying citizens who have worked since our teens, served in the U. S. military, created jobs for ourselves and others and contributed to Social Security, our children waited in line. Adoption of foreign-born children by Americans does not grant the children status as U. S. citizens automatically, or at least it did not then.

We sat in a huge, stuffy, crowded hall in the INS office, trying to keep our toddler son occupied, number tag in one hand, diaper bag in the other. For hours and hours. We produced proof of his HIV-negative status, proof that he had entered the country legally, proof that he had the right to work (yes, they give "green cards" to toddlers and yes, they are called "Resident Alien Identification Cards" in real life.) By the time we finished paying all the fees, fulfilling all the legal requirements and answering all the invasive questions, our son was four years old. At age 4, he became a U. S. Citizen, renouncing loyalties to any foreign sovereignty. Six years later, our Latina daughter was sworn in by none other than Eric Holder (I have a picture of him standing with my children, an American flag flying behind them. They're holding huge red, white and blue lollipops, smiling.)

And now, my Hispanic children will compete for jobs and seats at the university and scholarships with those children whose parents sidestepped the process. I wonder how many prospective employers will look at them and assume that they cheated, that they are among the ones that shouldn't be here. Haven't we done enough to deserve better for them?

"So if you are a college aged adult seeking admission your may find it harder to enter the school of your choice..."
And young white males already had a rough deal here anyway. (I am a mother of 2 of them. So I've given it thought.)
