Conservative Republicans are known for their abhorrence of socialism. Why are we against a single payer health care system? Because that’s SOCIALISM. Why are we against bailouts? Because that’s SOCIALISM. Most Republicans recognize socialism as being anathema to our principled world view.
So why in the world do so many Republicans turn a blind eye to socialized education?
Socialized education presents the following problems:
1) it is expensive. Have you seen the temple to humanism they laughingly call your local high school building? Have you seen the benefits package provided for those who may, or may not, be good teachers? Anytime government money is spent on something it has the effect of driving up the cost of that thing. According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, “School districts had total expenditures of approximately $596.6 billion in 2007–08″. That works out to over $10,000 per pupil per year.
2) it is ineffective at its stated purpose. Any monopoly becomes inefficient over time, government funded monopolies doubly so. If the education of our young people in the Arts and Sciences is the goal, it is clear the government schools are failing. However, I suggest to you that education is NOT the goal; indoctrination IS, and with that understanding, it becomes clear the government schools are succeeding quite well.
3) it is evil. Besides the obvious indoctrination for the acceptance of statism and socialism, government schools teach humanism, evolution, “multiculturalism”, moral relativity, and the list goes on. God is not allowed in the classroom. And all this is done WITH OUR MONEY!
As parents, one of our most sacred duties is the education of our children:
“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 11:18-19
Instead, most Republicans ship their children off to the local government indoctrination center and yet somehow expect them to turn out to be good Christians and conservatives. As long as our children are being educated indoctrinated by the government we should not be surprised that our civilization is in decline. A decline officiated by a socialist.
Public education IS socialism. Like all other instances of socialism in our society, it needs to be replaced with the free market.

I'm not for socialized education...
nathanalbright (Diary) Thursday, December 1st at 1:35AM EST (link)….and I wasn’t very fond of it as a child growing up either (I had a lot of unpleasant experiences with bullying and incompetent teachers), but I didn’t have a lot of say in it then. Assuming I get the chance to have children, I have no intent whatsoever of subjecting them to socialist education. They will either be home schooled or going to some sort of private school. I would suspect a growing number of other Republicans feel the same way.
I think a growing number don't accept it
Paula (Diary) Thursday, December 1st at 2:37AM EST (link)I started homeschooling my kids in the mid-90′s. Homeschooling was just beginning to hit its stride around that time. The internet was exploding, curriculum became widely available, support groups and co-ops were popular. Still, at that time you were still considered a little odd if you homeschooled and people looked at you funny if your kids were at the park in the middle of the school day.
Fast-forward to 2011 and the options for getting your kid out of the bricks and mortar public school are almost unlimited. Most states have some sort of school choice options within the public school system, at minimum, which at least gives families a little more control. And demand by parents for more options is pressing the issue. The unions know their day of having complete control over the schools is over. Republicans are leading the charge on this, but there are Democrats who are also demanding school choice (Juan Williams is one outspoken proponent).
That said, I think the vast majority of kids are still going to be stuck in the public schools. Mostly because it’s the easiest or most convenient option for the parents. It’s the default. Returning to local control and getting the Feds out of education (as well as breaking up some of these massive, failing districts) would go a long way to fixing the problems in the system, as would getting the unions out.
We enrolled my younger son in public high school or his junior & senior years so he could play baseball. It’s a tiny high school (300-ish students) with no locks on the lockers and no security guards or metal detectors. There are some good Christian teachers there and a Christian principal. They have a prayer on the first day of school and on some other occasions and many of the teachers attend the annual See You at the Pole event. It’s not perfect and they’re required to teach the state-mandated curriculum, but my kid hasn’t been taught socialism. Of course, I made sure we had already covered health class before he enrolled so we didn’t have to deal with the school’s idea of sex education!

Can you imagine
MNConservative (Diary) Thursday, December 1st at 2:35PM EST (link)Can you imagine having $10,000 per child per year to spend on curriculum for homeschooling?
