Breaking: Bush to permit offshore oil drilling.

Your turn, Congress.

Via Hot Air Headlines, the head of state of the “world’s biggest polluter” says hi:

Bush to Lift Executive Ban on Offshore Oil Drilling

WASHINGTON — President Bush will lift an executive ban on offshore oil drilling, although new oil exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf will remain off limits until Congress also takes action.

The president will make a Rose Garden statement on Monday, where he is expected to announce his lifting of the ban.

But by all means, ye Democratic legislators: take your time. Maybe you’ll get lucky, and wake up tomorrow in an alternate universe where 75% of the population doesn’t favor offshore drilling. And where you all have ponies! All of you always wanted ponies.

Well, who wouldn’t?

Continue to put the pressure on this issue. It may just be the one that keeps this from being a dismal year for the GOP.

  • spainishirish

Obamabus soon will be thrown positions along with individuals as sacrifices. Wait, that already happened.

  • aaronbg

    Makes my mouth water.

  • Darin_H

is that the 25% who oppose this are his base.

  • Rod_Patrick

Somebody pls. do something and tell Senator McCain to flip flop on ANWR drilling NOW.

BO & Co. are also now salivating on the idea of oil drilling.

    DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!

  • Rod_Patrick

Time for Barack to move to the middle! :D

  • CincoSolas_del_Bronx

Hopefully, the press conference alone will begin the decrease of speculation. As progress is made toward actual drilling, speculation will continue to drop as will the cost per supply/demand.

THEN, Congress will have to lift some restrictions. Domestic oil won’t be any cheaper than foreign oil due to lawyers, red tape (restrictions, regulations, permits, etc.) and unions. IF (I know big IF) Congress will lift restrictions even just a TINY bit…expect to see a big decrease in fuel.

—It’s not that we want government to DO anything about fuel, we want them to STOP impeding. Restrictions are the biggest impediment.

This is the right track though.

The base still provides the money and the workers to run the campaign. Alienate them and your campaign comes crashing down.

McCain has the same problem on his side, with some differences. The GOP base is more alienated from McCain the the Dem base is alienated from Obama. On the other hand, McCain is closer to center than Obama, so he doesn’t have to move as much toward center as Barack (and some like me would argue that he would do better by moving right and re-energizing the base). Which means while it won’t take a lot of movement to alienate the GOP base, McCain doesn’t need to move much, so his base is relatively more stable. Obama has a riskier situation in that he HAS to at least appear to move to the center to win the big one, and his base is more likely to riot if it doesn’t get its way.

Government isn’t the solution, government is the problem. If government will get out of the way, the people will fix the problem.

  • Rod_Patrick

If I can get a pony, I guess I don’t need oil, right?

  • Slightly_Askew

The Democratic leadership gets the ponies. You get to be the pony.

  • nilram

The real question is why Bush didn’t do this years ago, and why he ever upheld the executive ban on drilling in the first place.

  • mcrill

But I pity any pony that attempts to have me on its back.

Large Horse, please. With a good saddle, including saddle bags and a scabbard for my rifle.

  • Moe_Lane

    Should be quite droll.

when he sees one, especially if it’s his own gimmick being turned back on him. From the June 25th NYT:

“Mr. Obama was responding to remarks that Mr. McCain made on Monday in Fresno, Calif., when he [ed.-McCain] observed that even though the nation might take years to benefit from offshore drilling, ?exploiting those reserves would have psychological impact that I think is beneficial.?
Mr. Obama seized on those comments while speaking at a town hall-style meeting here.
? ?Psychological impact??? Mr. Obama said. ?In case you?re wondering, that?s Washington-speak for ?It polls well.? ?
He added, ?It?s an example of how Washington politicians try to convince you that they did something to make your life better when they really didn?t.?
Asked in Riverside, Calif., about his remarks on the psychological effects of lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling, Mr. McCain said: ?I think Americans want hope. They want some trust and confidence.?

And we want CHANGE too, Barry…change in offshore drilling policy now.

  • Rod_Patrick

The Democrats are using the arguments of the Energy Information Association that whenever America produces oil:

OPEC can easily neutralize impact of ANWR production by reducing Arab’s oil exports by the same amount.

This statement of EIA is too un-American.
EIA has never considered the following gains:

    • The value of ANWR production will nolonger go to Arab countries
    • Even at a higher price, there will be substantial loss of income to OPEC countries

OPEC countries will therefore “think twice” if they would really lower their production to maintain high price. Income, is simply

Gross Income = Price x Sales Volume

In this case, “speculation” in oil market is needed to neutralize the production reduction “threat” of OPEC countries. Why:

High Oil price heroically being maintained by the OPEC’s production reduction is already a clear market bubble.

Any insvetor will be afraid of oil commodity stocks in the market. They would know that high oil price is already artificial.

No way for Oil Price but to go down.

Conclusion: A partisan EIA is another case of a federal agency working against the interests of America.

Finally, contrary to the logic af democrats and MSM,

The start of ANWR drilling will immediate create a psychological impact to current oil futures market speculators. OPEC will also be forced to take advantage of the current high price of oil now and increase their production.

By speculation, ANWR drilling can really have an immediate impact on price TODAY.

  • Rod_Patrick

Didn’t edit it because it’s getting long.

Forgive the convoluted grammar and diction.

  • Rod_Patrick

We need advertising for this. Every hour, ever day; print, tv, web, radio. If the Republican leadership is willing to fight on this one issue, it’s a winner.

  • mcrill

Well, he does like to say that we need change.

  • Rod_Patrick

dreamy about how the Germans fuel-taxed their citizenry into desperately slapping a solar panel on every flat surface exposed to the sky…but he’ll say it a little differently than I did.

Or maybe he’ll reference some other enlightened socialist utopia which didn’t just slap him down and slam the gate in his face.

  • simpson316

EVERY DAY EVERY HOUR McCain should be talking about drilling offshore, nuke plants, coal shale and everything else we can do…

it is one of the few issues a vast majority of Americans agree with the GOP on IF we can frame the issue accurately…

Freedom’s Watch ad on drilling just went viral- it is hilarious! Anything with Homer Simpson is going to be awesome…

  • Rod_Patrick

Surely the lifting of the ban is okey, but it doesn’t do much.

A framework that will govern the exploration contracts can only be defined by an act of the Congress. Among others, it must provide clear guidelines for the so-called “oil production sharing”.

The President’s lifting of the ban should be construed as a “friendly” gesture that says: “Hey, Honorable Senators and Representatives, DO YOUR JOB QUICKLY! MY PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING!”

  • TimB52

Yes it is symbolic, but it is the President saying to the public, “You want drilling, call your Representative, they are the only ones standing in the way now.”

  • simpson316

    Okey! Okey! Got your point.

    DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!

I’m trying to be “friendly” here to Sir Reid and Madame Pelosi to reconsider their positions (and TV posing) on Oil drilling. It’s something like appeasement, You know, cuddling, praising, and thanking… and all the corny stuff just to let our very Honorable leaders in the Congress to work on “bipartisan bill” in ANWR oil drilling, and oil exploration/production in general. With unity and peace, we can surely attain energy independence.

I would also be willing to give the credit to the true leadership of the Democratic Party in the Senate and the House, if such Bill is passed immediately. Like in FISA Bill?

Who knows, it might work. Or I’m only just dreaming?

  • birdmojo

He could add something about how “this oil should be sold to Americans!”

Yes, I know that oil is fungible. I’m not saying it isn’t. I’m saying that, if he really wanted to get more of the populist vote out there, he’d add something like “this oil should be sold to Americans!”

  • BrianH

I don’t disagree with it, but I didn’t write it. It’s got my name and my signature though.

  • bs

Flagstaff and I have also had it happen to us. Neil says he’s looking into it.
