FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

An overnight thought.

Open thread too, I guess.

Nothing too profound: only, if Obama’s European trip was mostly supposed to be about the Germany speech, and if said speech was supposed to be evocative of both JFK’s and Ronald Reagan’s… why is it that none of the text of that speech has captured the public imagination? Stop your average American on the street, and they’ll know the most famous phrases from either Kennedy or Reagan’s speech. In fact, they’re so well-known that I don’t even have to bother typing them out. Obama’s… not so much. Also: instead of exclusively talking up said speech, the Obama campaign has instead spent a nontrivial amount of time over the last few days involved in the controversy of whether their candidate was or was not being a grawlix in any one of three separate occasions, not to mention countries.

That Karl Rove’s something else, isn’t he?

He was challenged to go to Iraq. Then he went there–as well as other places–in accordance with perceived requirements and guidance from professional political advice.

So, now he’s been there again since 2006 and the clock has stopped on a minor debate point.

Otherwise I see it as a wash. His popularity in Europe will alternately enthrall and alienate the usual shops here.

One possible exception would be the McCain campaign’s response. It seemed a bit more unsteady than usual.

Obama’s narcissistic posturing. Now Johnny Mack thinks that “16 months might be okay.” JM badly needs heavy doses of testoserone.

One thing I did learn from a Rush listener who spoke fluent German [as Obama who chided s-all over foreign languages does not.]

JFK should have said “Ich bin Berliner” to indicate he was a citizen of that city. “Ich bin ein Berliner” means that JFK claimed he was a jelly doughnut!!

Great advance work by the usual Democrat turnip-truck drivers in charge of US foreign policy. Had Nixon said that, it would have been ridiculed forever & a day.

For some reason the MSM has not covered the beginning of the Obama speech in which he notably said:

“The world will little note nor long remember what we say here…”

It was a remarkably prescient comment and totally original I am told.

    …I suppose so.

Embarrassing, that considering my background. Anyway, I’m testing it out: it seems to work fairly well as a general euphemism.

…this campaign feels sooo over. People don’t want change because of Barack’s empty promises. They want change because the world is a very fatiguing place right now. It’s odd to see it all unfold with these two candidates, though. An empty suit versus a Republican that many Democrats admire — this all should favor the Republican.

My hope for the next 100 days is that McCain can knock Obama around enough that he is a bit more of a grown-up if and when he becomes president. As a moderate, I’m still rooting hard for McCain. He should be able to make Obama look shallow and weak in the debates.

I just can’t figure out why generally unhappy people will go into the voting booth and not give the other side a crack at it.
