Is your Congressman on the list below? {UPDATED}

Hint: if he or she's a Democrat, the answer's probably "Yes."

{Updated: Both Jeff and myself (and I confirmed with a phone call) have been notified that Rep Blunt had been attending a lunch hosted by Paul Weyrich; that he had had no more than 15 or 30 minutes’ notice; that this is not the first time that this sort of thing has happened; and that he would have voted against adjournment if he had been able to get there. I accept this explanation, and have removed him from the list. – Moe Lane}

Well, if he or she is:

Abercrombie, Ackerman, Allen, Andrews, Baca, Baird, Baldwin, Barrow, Bean, Becerra, Berkley, Berman, Berry, Bishop (GA), Bishop (NY), Blumenauer, Blunt, Boren, Boucher, Boyd (FL), Boyda (KS), Brady (PA), Brown (Corrine), Brown-Waite (Ginny), Butterfield, Capps, Capuano, Cardoza, Carnahan, Carson, Castor, Cazayoux, Chandler, Clarke, Clay, Cleaver, Clyburn, Cohen, Conyers, Cooper, Costa, Costello, Courtney, Cramer, Crowley, Cubin, Cuellar, Cummings, Davis (AL), Davis (CA), Davis (IL), Davis (Lincoln), DeFazio, DeGette, Delahunt, DeLauro, Dicks, Dingell, Doggett, Doyle, Edwards (MD), Edwards (TX), Ellison, Emanuel, Engel, Eshoo, Etheridge, Farr, Fattah, Filner, Foster, Frank (MA), Giffords, Gonzalez, Gordon, Green (Al). …then he or she doesn’t give a tinker’s dam about whether you end up paying six bucks a gallon for gas. And remember: this movement to adjourn passed by one vote: which means that they all share in the responsibility Any one of them could have voted yea to not adjourn, but they didn’t.

Consider that the next time you ask yourself, How much does one vote matter, anyway?

COMMENTS

  • NightTwister

Although he’s not my representative, he’s running for the open Senate seat in Colorado.

Apparently he’s too busy sitting at home trying to figure out what happened to his 10-point lead in the polls. The most recent poll out shows the race even between him and Schaffer at 44% each.

It will be interesting to see if Schaffer has moved ahead or not after the debate two days ago.

  • Moe_Lane

You voted Yea, or you failed. There are Republicans scattered across that list. Admittedly, only four of them (all NV, and they may contact RS if they have an explanation of why we should take them off the list), but the principle remains sound.

  • NightTwister

If just ONE of them had been there to vote it might’ve changed things, although I’d be willing to bet the 17 (D)s got permission to vote Nay because of a close race back home (just conjecture).

If any of the four (R) NVs were there, I’m guessing up to four of the (D) Nays would’ve been Yeahs.

Oh, and I meant to ask…what exactly has did Congress actually achieve in this past session (besides FISA, of course)?

I was also wondering if some poor (D) was going to have to stay behind and have five-minute-per-day sessions to keep Bush from any recess appointments. Have you heard anything about that?

  • mightymouth

Well my republican rep voted for this idiocy and now its too late to challenge her (Ginny Brown-Waite)with a fight in the primary. I have written a stern letter of disapproval to her but as usual will never hear back from her.

  • NightTwister

No Republicans voted for the measure, but four of them were no votes.

  • mightymouth

She should have been there, no excuse!
It is not HER seat it belongs to the people of FL05

  • aaronbg

…he seems to be pretty quick on the issues and I would be surprised to hear this on a new radio ad soon.

Congressman Hulshof had a chance to keep congress in session to push for a real energy policy and he skipped town.

He handed her campaign a gift.

  • StephC

Think: Petroleum products which come from the same oil as gasoline, the main other product being plastics. Not only are we paying more for products because of the hike in gas prices, we’re also paying more for anything made from that oil. From your state of the art computers to cheap sports watches to food packaging… everything depends upon these things, not just the gasoline that runs your vehicles.

And, yes, my stupid Representative is on that list but talking to him is like talking into the wind. I’ve tried before and the response, which I did receive, was so full of “I know best” that it was sickening.

  • NightTwister

a story on the vote. It appears that Udall was back in Colorado this week for various campaign events.

    He

tried to get back in time for the vote

    and

asked Speaker Pelosi to hold the vote until he could get there

but she wouldn’t and he didn’t quite make it in time. He was, surprisingly available ten minutes later to vote on another bill, however. Curiously…so was Minority Whip Roy Blunt(R-MO).

This breaks a pledge Udall made in the debate a couple of days ago that he would vote against adjourning before an energy (read: oil drilling) bill could be considered.

I also see a commercial or two on this one in the near future.

  • NightTwister

Here’s a partial video of the debate. Sorry, there’s no embed available yet.

  • Dave_in_Fla

    As in Roy Blunt? Hmmm…

  • simpson316

He’s not polling so strong in MO right now…

    for 2010.

I expect there will be someone to replace him in two years.

  • Jwilks93

Ya Tim Ryan is on that list, and no matter how long us Ohio residents complain about him, the liberal minded idiots up in northeast Ohio just can’t seem to stop voting for him.

  • Moe_Lane

Why, we haven’t heard all that much about the Steelman campaign. By all means, tell us about these fine people!

No, not here. Diary it. And put Missouri in the tags, of course.

    :)

  • simpson316

    Against Congressman Hulshof.

    The primary is the 5th.

I have a handful of blogs (including two post debate wrap-ups) if you would like to know more about her.

  • MORepublican

I assumed you had already ;-)

I am more disappointed in Blunt’s NV than Hulshof’s. Blunt was obviously available to vote on the measure, since he voted on the other item.

It’s up to RS if they want to rake Hulshof over the coals; I’m not an editor or have the super powers that they do. However, I think that at least Hulshof, being a gubernatorial candidate, has a better reason why he had an NV than Blunt. The primary is next Tuesday, so all of Hulshof’s energies and focus is on the primary campaign in Missouri.

I just have a sneaking suspicion that if Hulshof had gone to D.C. to vote on the measure, Steelman’s camp would have done something negative in that direction as well, like “Hulshof doesn’t care about Missourians’ needs and doesn’t want to listen to Missourians at this critical juncture. He’s in Washington, D.C. spending billions/trillions of dollars of your money.” Hulshof is damned is he does, and damned is he doesn’t from the Steelman camp.

When Steelman says that one of Hulshof’s good qualities is “being a smooth talking lawyer”, their camp will turn anything they can into a negative, IMO.

If RS thinks Hulshof’s Governor campaign is a legitimate excuse as to why he missed the vote, or if they think it is not, it is their decision. I will still keep reading and posting.

I think everyone punted ’til the recess ends, then they come back, develop some sort of energy policy in September as if by magic (maybe Obama comes down from on high to show the way), then they can go back to their districts when more people are paying attention to the election cycle, and proclaim a victory for the American people. Cynical, yes, but probable, IMO.

  • simpson316

And I think my comment was borne a little bit out of laziness. I didn’t realize that Hulshof was a NV. I thought he was a Yea.

This is probably a little less of an issue than I initially thought.

  • simpson316

    Inexcusable.

But then again, he hasn’t exactly been stellar in his leadership position.

  • Moe_Lane

We want to see tons of state stuff, after all. :)

  • simpson316

I’m all about the State feature. I think it is probably the best thing that we got with the new platform.

  • Moe_Lane

…when the individual Congressional and Senate campaigns are really going to be going gangbusters; that should give us plenty of stuff to cover, and people should still be able to keep up.

Serious Mayhem: A Conservative Policy Arena

These elected officials are despicable. I hope Americans are paying attention and vote them out of office in Nov. 2008.

  • MORepublican

I should have not jumped the gun so quickly.

Thanks Moe and RS for clarifying.

  • simpson316

And it really doesn’t surprise me that the Ds would pull a stunt like this.

  • Canthros

Can’t say I’m surprised. Here’s hoping Northup manages to unseat him this fall.

  • Andysforsmalgovernment

I like what you’ve done so far in the MO section. Very helpful. I get to go vote my absentee ballot today since I’ll be out of town for training next Tuesday. You’re analysis and summaries have been very useful.

  • BigGator5

    facepalm

I’m in FL-5 and I even endorsed her!!

    I feel dirty…

  • aaronbg

…seems she has had a slight problem with maintaining that 90% lifetime rating. That has since dropped to 86% lifetime.

    Additionally she dropped 16% from 88% in 2006 to 72% in 2007.

    Brown-Waite ACU Rating

I suggest you vote for someone moving towards conservatism rather that away.

P.S. The hyphenated name was my first clue.

  • ironchapman

John Barrow and David Scott, both of GA. I’m not surprised, they’re both Democrats.

And I say “both” because as a college student, I spend my year divided between Douglasville (home) and Statesboro (GSU).

  • rstreu

But, as far as I Know, he’s also not on the list of those who stayed behind. Does anyone have a complete copy of that list, by the way… I believe the one we had earlier is incomplete due to people coming back.

Need to get on him — he’s one of the very few NY elected officials in Washington with an (R).
