Against fully seating Michigan and Florida before he was for it.

:deadpan: Oh, my. How shocking. I am absolutely stunned by this.

However could this change of heart possibly have happened?

Obama says give Fla. and Mich. delegates full vote

WASHINGTON - Now that Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination for president, he wants convention delegates from Florida and Michigan to have full voting rights at the party’s national convention.

Obama sent a letter Sunday to the party’s credentials committee, asking members to reinstate the delegates’ voting rights when the committee meets at the start of the convention in Denver.

Two things. First: ah-ah-ah, AP. McCain’s the only person in this race who has clinched his nomination. I understand that the Democrats like to pretend otherwise, but until they actually have the final votes and anoint his head with the sacred oil, Obama is merely the assumed nominee. He doesn’t like it, then maybe he should have gone out and won California. Or New Jersey. Or Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Texas, or Massachusetts.

Second: this is yet another flip-flop for the fellow. As per the St Petersburg Times:

KISSIMMEE — Delving deeper into Florida’s Democratic delegate debacle than he ever has to date, Sen. Barack Obama said Wednesday that “a very reasonable solution” would be to count Florida’s disputed primary votes and cut the state’s delegation to the convention in half.

Still, in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times, Obama brushed off Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s emphasis on counting Florida’s primary as a meaningful indication of the popular vote. She in turn called that stance an insult to 1.75-million Democrats who voted on Jan. 29.

“In all these races if I didn’t campaign at all and this had just been a referendum on name recognition, Sen. Clinton would be the nominee,” Obama told the Times during his first campaign trip to Florida in eight months. “It’s pretty hard to make an argument that somehow you winning what is essentially a name recognition contest in Florida was a good measure of electoral strength there.”

That was then. As Jake Tapper notes, this is now:

“Party unity calls for the delegates from Florida and Michigan to be able to participate fully alongside the delegates from the other states and territories,’ Obama wrote in a letter to credentials committee chairs Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt, Jr., and Eliseo Roques-Arroyo. “Accordingly, I ask that the Credentials Committee, when it meets on August 24 to approve the delegates for the National Convention, pass a resolution that would entitle each delegate from Florida and Michigan to cast a full vote.”

This naturally has nothing to do with the fact that Michigan - a state that Obama absolutely needs to win - is currently polling at +4.3 for the last month. In July. Before the race tightens. It’s merely a sign that the candidate is all about making sure that everybody gets represented at the convention.

Now that he thinks that he knows how it’s all going to turn out, of course.

Moe Lane

PS: Just for the record, I don’t feel any particular contempt towards Senator Obama for this exercise in applied political cynicism. I might, except that all my contempt reserves are unfortunately dedicated towards those of his supporters who seem to think that we must turn off our critical faculties and worship the man, merely because they have chosen to.

I don't know... this may be the most honest thing...

AP has said in months:

Now that Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination for president, he wants convention delegates from Florida and Michigan to have full voting rights at the party’s national convention.

Now that he wants to count them

he’s sure they’ll all forget the past and fall down at his feet.

Wishful thinking, at best.

There was another flip-flop in that article

He promised to stand firmly behind a moratorium against drilling off Florida’s coast. “Compromising a national treasure that is the Florida coastline for a short-term fix to a long-term problem, I think, would be a mistake.”

Way to get on the wrong side of the issue in Florida. Per the recent Rassmussen Florida poll.

Among voters in the state 57% are in favor of offshore drilling, while 32% do not think it should be allowed.

and remember, RSers… PUMA voters are our friends.

Seriously… when even the AP looks at Obama with some cynicism, he’s really doing something wrong.

Every time he talks, he makes life better for us.

he may get more than his wish…

What’s to stop a majority of the super-delegates from looking at the “new” delegate totals and the current polling trends, and then reluctantly, coming to the conclusion that Sen. Clinton is more electable?

If the superdelegates AT SUCH A LATE DATE, after hearing so much about “Hype and Change” if the nomination was taken away from him now — she would lose ALL of the youth vote and ALL of the minority vote.

Granted, there are a whole lot of old white women — but that will NOT be enough to offset the millions of votes she would lose.

Take it away from Obamessiah now, and The Democrats will be revolting!

How come I can’t understand the man on anything? It’s probably because he’s been all over the board on lots of issues. If Obama wants to win he’s going to have to be straight with the American People. MCCAIN 2008!

the Dems have painted themselves into a corner. In their zeal for the ABC candidate (anyone but Clinton), they chose “Hype and Change” an inexperienced neophyte who cannot win the general election. They found themselves in that situation because they knew The Hildabeast could not win because 50 percent of the country hated her.

To go back to her now would mean an even greater defeat — and probably greater losses in the House and Senate as disenchanted voters simply stayed home.

Come to think of it: GO Hillary!

Obama has turned flip flopping into an art form. He has done it so often, on every issue(except, of course, his wonderfulness), that he should not bother with positions, just tell the the public up front that it’s whatever I say, whenever I say it because I say so.

I'm sure if he wins the required electoral votes to be President...

Jeff Emanuel Sunday, August 3rd at 6:26PM EDT (link)

In March 2008, Obama Falsely Claimed He Won The Michigan Democrat Primary When He Was Not On The Ballot

Obama Claimed He “Won Michigan.” NBC’s David Gregory: “But Senator, you have not demonstrated that you can decisively put the nomination away. You have also not demonstrated that you can win some of the big states that’ll be important in the general election — California, New York, Ohio.” Obama: “Well, David, we’ve won Michigan and Georgia and Illinois and Missouri.” (NBC’s, “Today Show,” 3/5/08)

While it's certainly possible...

Sen. Clinton could, as in maybe, edge-out Sen. McCain in November, because she’s a known commodity, I believe her negatives would be immediately resurrected, and given the choice between Sen. McCain and Sen. Clinton, the American people would choose a true war-hero and divided government over another Clinton presidency.

Of course, that’s provided the nutroots don’t revolt because they feel they’ve been betrayed by the Washington establishment and Democratic insiders.

Under that circumstance, it’s Sen. McCain in a landslide.

I dunno. The need to *win* has been building in these guys...

Moe Lane Sunday, August 3rd at 6:40PM EDT (link)

…since 2000. 2002 surprised them; 2004 infuriated them; and 2006 frustrated them (all the more because they thought that they had actually accomplished something by taking away Congress). If Obama keeps sliding off of the beam, what does he have to offer them?

Besides: his major supporters are either: African-Americans, who won’t go anywhere else in large enough percentages to have the Democrats lose states, either; urban liberals, who can easily enough con themselves into believing that they wanted what actually happened all along, really (God knows this candidate has given them enough practice in that skill already); and youth voters, who nobody sane relies on in an election anyway. So, not much actual risk there.

these same sentiments. I don’t honestly believe this will happen, but there’s a part of me that thinks it *could * happen. Especially if Obama stays flat in the polls or actually starts dipping (and he eats his other leg, to boot).
My question is - and Moe sums up the answer pretty well - but, what damage would the Dems be looking at, if the superdelegets were to nominate Clinton? I also submit, that changing candidates at the convention would throw McCain’s camp into some chaos. The dynamics would change overnight. The question is, could the Dem Party overcome the immediately aftermath of such a coup?

But to many Dems...

Two months to the day

paint_it_red Sunday, August 3rd at 8:33PM EDT (link)

Since he won the primary and the last ballot was cast in Puerto Rico. That suggests to me that camp Obama knew all along they would do this but give it two months so that it was not such a hot issue in voters minds.

Had he done this before 6/3/08, Clinton would have won. And, may I take this opportunity to point out that he did not win the popular vote in that primary either.

Yet another meaningless stab at feigning the high road by Obama while simply acting in what is in his own political interest.

Where else, but the Democratic Party, could such a sordid coalition of misfits go that affords them the opportunity to systematically fool the American people into granting them the power they crave, and to which, they clearly feel entitled.

Third Party

That’s where.

What's the allocation?

ss396 Sunday, August 3rd at 9:37PM EDT (link)

The battle over Michigan and Florida was less about seating the delegates than it was about how the delegates were to be allocated, in the absence of bona fide primary races. The Clinton supporters were incensed that the Rules Committeee awarded Obama delegates that were, effectively, robbed from her. Yes, yes, she declined to remove her name from the Michigan ballot, even though all the other Dem candidates did. But Obama was given more than the “Uncommitted” vote. Hillary did receive votes, but was not awarded delagates accordingly. It’s a similar story in Florida.

So, if the delegations are to be fully seated, how are their votes to be cast? This fight isn’t over yet. Obama may be trying a peace offering, but this is only the opening act so far.

If you pay people to sit on their duffs, you cannot be surprised when they do.

Query?

rbdwiggins Sunday, August 3rd at 10:04PM EDT (link)

Given the legislative structure of our constitutional republic, which “Third Party” holds, or has held, the reigns of power the left so desperately seeks?

Bull Moose

JKH1232 Sunday, August 3rd at 10:10PM EDT (link)

Just because there isn’t one now doesn’t mean one can’t be formed around a charismatic leader with an agenda some people will follow.

Believe me, I’m basically imbedded in a bastion of the American Left, and they would jump at the chance to ditch the Democrats to vote Green, Socialist, Progressive… whatever party Barak could form around himself if the Dems kicked him out.
