We seem to be having a Star Trek TOS meme going with Obama, here.

That's not good for him, by the way.

Don’t get me wrong, loved the first two seasons growing up, have all of Diane Duane’s ST books – but this isn’t really the mood that I presume that the Obama campaign wants to present. Particularly since McCain’s going with that entire BSG 2.0 vibe.

Anyway, first we had the Space Hippies:

…and now we have to ask, “Who Mourns for Adonis?

…um, not me? Read up a little on organized classical/’Dark Age’ European polytheism and you start to understand why the various Abrahamic faiths went through them like a hot knife through butter.

PS: When your Temple to yourself is causing your political opponent’s campaign to immediately reply, “Is this from the Onion?” – then you may want to reconsider your basic theme. What, too late?

Such a pity.

    And it did not turn out well – for Apollo!

    Captain Kirk (Johnny Mac in a future life?) does OK.

    ends his speech asking the audience to toast him and drink the “kool-aid” run for the Rockies folks. Don’t pass go, don’t collect your government handout, just run.

    They are colorful, to be sure, but hardly edifying.

    I always loved that line.

    The grand swagger, the elitist, arrogant attitude, dragging in ancient Earth mythology with this idiotic temple. All we need is the characteristic eye flash of the Goa’uld and we can confirm that he is a System Lord.

    We have our orders to destroy the source of Obama’s power.

    If only it were that easy…

    Hatin’ on the space hippies? They’re just a buncha kids out looking for a good time, never meant nobody no harm.

    Kudos for the TOS reference, though. Good times.

    Don’t get me started on the Tuatha D? Danann; I understand that the Baltic/Germanic gods weren’t much fun to be around, either, but I haven’t read up on them overmuch.

    Frankly, the smartest thing that the neopagans did when they reinvented their religion in the 19th century was to only keep the names.

    **Muse, speak to me now of that resourceful man

    who wandered far and wide after ravaging the sacred citadel of Troy (ed note- aka Hillary of Troy).

    He came to see many people’s cities, where he learned their customs, while on the sea his spirit suffered many torments,

    as he fought to save his life and lead his comrades home.

    But though he wanted to, he could not rescue them?

    they all died from their own stupidity, the fools.

    They feasted on the cattle of Hyperion,god of the sun?(energy policy)

    that’s why he snatched away their chance of getting home (the White House) someday

    So now, daughter of Zeus, tell us his story, starting anywhere you wish

    A Cliché Came Out of its Cage

    You said 'The world is going back to Paganism'.
    Oh bright Vision! I saw our dynasty in the bar of the House
    Spill from their tumblers a libation to the Erinyes,
    And Leavis with Lord Russell wreathed in flowers, heralded with flutes,
    Leading white bulls to the cathedral of the solemn Muses
    To pay where due the glory of their latest theorem.
    Hestia's fire in every flat, rekindled, burned before
    The Lardergods. Unmarried daughters with obedient hands
    Tended it By the hearth the white-armd venerable mother
    Domum servabat, lanam faciebat. Duly at the hour
    Of sacrifice their brothers came, silent, corrected, grave
    Before their elders; on their downy cheeks easily the blush
    Arose (it is the mark of freemen's children) as they trooped,
    Gleaming with oil, demurely home from the palaestra or the dance.
    Walk carefully, do not wake the envy of the happy gods,
    Shun Hubris. The middle of the road, the middle sort of men,
    Are best. Aidos surpasses gold. Reverence for the aged
    Is wholesome as seasonable rain, and for a man to die
    Defending the city in battle is a harmonious thing.
    Thus with magistral hand the Puritan Sophrosune
    Cooled and schooled and tempered our uneasy motions;
    Heathendom came again, the circumspection and the holy fears ...
    You said it. Did you mean it? Oh inordinate liar, stop.

    2

    Or did you mean another kind of heathenry?
    Think, then, that under heaven-roof the little disc of the earth,
    Fortified Midgard, lies encircled by the ravening Worm.
    Over its icy bastions faces of giant and troll
    Look in, ready to invade it. The Wolf, admittedly, is bound;
    But the bond will break, the Beast run free. The weary gods,
    Scarred with old wounds the one-eyed Odin, Tyr who has lost a hand,
    Will limp to their stations for the last defence. Make it your hope
    To be counted worthy on that day to stand beside them;
    For the end of man is to partake of their defeat and die
    His second, final death in good company. The stupid, strong
    Unteachable monsters are certain to be victorious at last,
    And every man of decent blood is on the losing side.
    Take as your model the tall women with yellow hair in plaits
    Who walked back into burning houses to die with men,
    Or him who as the death spear entered into his vitals
    Made critical comments on its workmanship and aim.
    Are these the Pagans you spoke of? Know your betters and crouch, dogs;
    You that have Vichy water in your veins and worship the event
    Your goddess History (whom your fathers called the strumpet Fortune).

    C.S. Lewis

    At least many of the original pagans eventually came to know they desperately needed a Savior.
