My very quick take on “An American Carol.” (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Also, Feddie's here. I didn't mention that before because I'm useless.

Good film, but it needed more zombies. (UPDATE: Ed Morrissey has a somewhat more insightful review, as usual. I tend to be forgiving of movies that give me zombies to be shotgunned.)

Yeah, we forgot to mention that we were here at the RNC, huh? Me, Erick, Ben, Adam C, absentee nee The Right-Wing Nut Job, Dan Spencer, Soren, Mark I, Jeff’s popping in tomorrow, and I haven’t tracked down Michelle yet. Should be a thing.

I loved the premiere…really loved the Kelsey Grammer comment about having watcthed the coronation….err convention.

Maybe we can get together sometime this week. Please contact me.

I hope we conservatives support this movie, and those who made it...

smagar Sunday, August 31st at 8:22PM EDT (link)

Already, I’ve seen Allahpundit opine that he hopes the movie is funnier than The Half Hour News Hour was.

Before you indulge in the luxury of debating whether you, as a conservative moviegoer, will support An American Carol or not, think about David Zucker and the supporting cast members who signed up to make this movie. We know Hollywood will fry them…do you really want to leave them twisting in the wind by NOT supporting this movie.

Before you decide, read this from Dirty Harry’s Place, a great conservative blog on film.

“Hollywood Elsewhere” is the blog of Jeffrey Wells, a fellow who (apparently) has some influence in Hollywood. He just put conservatives on notice:

Hollywood Elsewhere is not — and will henceforth not be permitted to be — a good hangin’ place for crude conservative wingnuts who also enjoy movies. I realize that my blunt and sometimes combative judgments and willy-nilly writing style have attracted this element, but starting today I am renewing my efforts to rid this site of belligerent conservative growlers and rage-spitters.

Who, pray tell, qualify as “belligerent conservative growlers and rage-spitters”? (Emphasis added)

I will not provide a forum for this or that Republican hooligan to spew acidic slash-and-burn, borderline-racist views such as Mgmax’s description of Barack Obama as “Spock Obama” and links to this or that National Review article by guys like Mark Steyn.

No wonder Harry wrote this:

Now do you understand why Hollywood conservatives keep their mouths shut for fear of losing work? Does it make a little more sense now? We’re not dealing with the local union-or-die Teamster or your Aunt Minnie with the worn photo of JFK still hanging in her kitchen. We’re dealing with people who can’t stand to read a website with right-of-center opinion on it. If they can’t stand that, do you really think they would hire us?

Okay, everybody….David Zucker just threw his comfy Hollywood life to the four winds with An American Carol. So, potentially, did the B-list actors who fill out the cast behind the A-listers (Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voight, etc…).

If Carol bombs, do you really think Wells and his ilk won’t remember who “turned traitor?” Has anyone seen the anchors for The Half Hour News Hour on screen recently? I haven’t. Coincidence? I fear not.

If we conservatives have 100% given up on Hollywood, let’s tell Harry and Zucker and the rest of our brethren living in that briar patch of idiocy. Let’s not give them the false hope that, if they stick their necks out and make a product that we don’t 100% like, we’ll still pay our money to go see/watch it and make it a commercial success.

Let’s be frank and honest with them and tell them that, if they don’t wow us, they’re on their own. Then, at least, they can keep their heads down and try to make the best living in the arts that they can.

Or, we could make An American Carol a financial success. Let Zucker laugh all the way to the bank.

Yeah, I know it’s not supposed to be like this. We shouldn’t have to think about whether a filmmaker deserves our support for political reasons when we pick a movie or TV show to watch. All we should have to do is ask ourselves whether we like the end product or not.

But The Path to 9/11’s DVD release wasn’t supposed to have been spiked by Team Clinton, either. The Hollywood glitterati weren’t supposed to break out in cheers* when Michael Moore insulted President Bush at the Oscars. And, those same glitterati weren’t supposed to respond with indifferent applause when American troops appeared via video at last year’s Oscars, either.

They weren’t supposed to launch their own “surge” of anti-war, anti-troop movies at the same time Petraeus launched the real surge.

But they did. We can either ignore reality or adapt to it.

David Zucker deserves your support for An American Carol. If we don’t, we deserve to watch every Hollywood conservative go into protective hiding.

  • When reporters pointed out to Michael Moore that plenty of people booed his Oscar acceptance speech, he responded quickly “the main floor wasn’t booing.” The “main floor” was where all the glitterati were sitting. And Moore was right. The glitterati were either applauding or sitting there in silence.

I did not mean my comment to imply that Moe plans to dis An American Carol. I just wanted to add value to the post he started, instead of creating a parallel one.

Go David Zucker!

Latest Smear Against Palin

BillM Sunday, August 31st at 10:12PM EDT (link)

Folks, I’m not going to post any links or details, but we need to be prepared for a 48 hour hulabaloo over the latest kos rumor/tactic that Gov Palin is actually baby Trig’s maternal grandmother.

I can’t imagine it’s true, I think it has the potential to backfire badly, shows how desperate the Dems are over the Palin pick, and I don’t think Barry et al will go near it w/a 100ft pole.

But, this is the Internet-Gotcha Age, and post-Spitzer & Edwards, the MSM has to be looking for some payback. And I have to say that the “evidence” (such as it is) I’ve seen & read, while hardly compelling let alone ‘admissable’, doesn’t entirely rule out the possibility it’s true either, IMO.

Of course, I believe Pres/VP candidates routinely release their medical records, so I’m sure that’ll be that.

Just sayin’…forewarned is forearmed; hope for the best prepare for the worst, etc.

Not only to solidly disprove any and all arguments that are being gathered as “evidence”, but to prepare the talking points that can be used to put into perspective trashing a teenage daughter of candidate, including caricaturing her physical appearance.

It is imperative because if it’s being discussed in blogs now, it will make its way to water coolers as soon as the hurricane buzz subsides later in the week.

Attack on Gov. Palin will backfire

Joe Sunday, August 31st at 10:33PM EDT (link)

The guy that posted it has exactly 3 posts. 2 smears against Gov. Palin, *and 1 post where he is upset that *Brokeback Mountain is not a respected movie. **ROFLMAO!

This KOS site is just a revamped looking effort by the left to counter the effect of FR, RS, TH, and Drudge.

This stuff will backfire. Big time. They will regret doing this. They will anger every Mom in America with this line of attack. The sympathy factor for Gov. Palin just pegged the meter.

Every woman in politics, regardless of party, should be called upon to condemn this outrageous act.

Is the McCain camp going to address

Wintergreen Sunday, August 31st at 10:57PM EDT (link)

the attacks about Sarah Palin and her son Trig?

I don’t believe them, but I strongly think that this crap needs to be put to rest asap. The longer you let a lie like that linger, the harder it is to get rid of it.

I really feel sorry for her daughter. The group that called Stanley Kurtz “slimy” for reading about the Annenburg Challenge is now looking at photos of her daughter and speculating about if she was pregnant or not.

Will they address this or not? Frankly, I think they should use this against them. Let the public see what scum the Obamaniacs are.

Update

Well, then you’ll be happy to know (as I am) that Townhall has just put something up that blows a huge hole in the rumor/smear/lie.

100% False

BillM Sunday, August 31st at 11:32PM EDT (link)

Here is a pic of Gov Palin early this year, apparently speaking at one of her children’s schools:

Gov Palin with Trig

FYI the “evidence” picture that Palin was not Trig’s mother now turns out to be from 2006.

Obv the rumor is 100% false, and this is an epic disaster for the moonbats. Shame it was disproved so quickly before a big name Dem could get caught make some stupid remark, like what happened w/Gustav.

I couldn’t imagine Gov Palin would’ve been dumb enough for the rumor to be true, but I also couldn’t believe an old hand like Markos was stupid enough to allow hundreds of posts of this drivel w/out er, vetting it. :)

Now it’s out there forever, and the few lone voices of reason on kos, who were initially appalled by the mongering, are bemoaning how hard it is to delete entire diaries there. LOL.

I’ll copy from where I got the “debunk” pic: “The McCain camp can debunk this immediately, although it’s probably to their advantage to let the conspiracy theorists hang themselves a bit longer before doing so.”

I don’t apologize for posting the bare minimum that I did. Forewarned is forearmed.

What a brilliant, brilliant pick by McCain. The Dims went overboard and it blew up in their face. This is exactly why Bush/McCain should pick Janice Rogers Brown for the next SCOTUS vacancy, aside from the fact she’d also make the best Justice.

You think the public loves Palin, wait’ll they hear about the “daughter of sharecroppers…” And if she doesn’t make it, nominate Bill Pryor next, and on & on. No more O’Connors or Kennedys.

Speaking of Vetting

BillM Sunday, August 31st at 11:45PM EDT (link)

Looks like Barry didn’t vett Biden properly:

“But the legend of Joe Biden, born in a welding shop, dies hard with political reporters, who find it easier to romanticize a gritty, hardscrabble childhood than a conventionally comfortable one.

The facts are there for anyone who wants to look at them. When Joe Biden Sr. died in 2002, his obituary in the News-Journal of Wilmington reported that when he married in 1941, “he was working as a sales representative for Amoco Oil Co. [uhoh big oil] in Harrisburg.”

It went on, “Biden also was an executive in a Boston-based company that supplied waterproof sealant for U.S. merchant marine ships built during World War II. After the war, he co-owned an airport and crop-dusting service on Long Island.” Upon moving his family to Delaware, the News-Journal said, Biden “worked in the state first as a sales manager for auto dealerships and later in real-estate condominium sales.”

Raven Monday, September 1st at 12:25AM EDT (link)

If you looked around the site, you’d see we’ve already noted this no less than twice. In the redhots, perhaps, but it’s not exactly worthyof a full diary post.

Secondly, What, precisely, does this have to do with “An American Carol”?

“Unlike cruel liberty that requires you to stand and take responsibility for your choices, kind tyranny requires only that you kneel and surrender your choices.”

This is the kind of attack best ignored

Raven Monday, September 1st at 12:29AM EDT (link)

Her medical records will be released. The attacks will be put to rest by anyone who wants to appear sane and not piss off 50% of the populace.

Those who push this attack and those who support them will marginalize themselves.

“Unlike cruel liberty that requires you to stand and take responsibility for your choices, kind tyranny requires only that you kneel and surrender your choices.”

A Point of View

tracycoyle Monday, September 1st at 11:20AM EDT (link)

I attended the reception and screening yesterday. I met and thanked both Farley and Davi for doing the movie, and after seeing it, I would still say exactly the same thing to them.

I also thought Zucker took the lazy way out. Yes, I laughed at parts, yes it was rough, but I doubt any of the groups will like the comparisons including the social conservatives.

Maybe it was an age thing. The people I was around joined the audience in a standing ovation, but it was being polite, not enthusiastic. I heard one comment about it being over the top. Obviously not Airplane types.

If something is bad, I am not going to say it is good just because it, roughly, parrots my point of view. I appreciate that someone in Hollywood took aim at the liberal left. It could have been better.
