FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Palin’s memory better than Gibson’s research skills?

Ah, he relied on the AP. Silly, silly man.

Let’s set the scenario:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.”

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

See also Hot Air, which keeps going; and ABC News for the partial transcript. Anyway, her comment actually makes perfect sense, given that what she originally said was (via HuffPo):

“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

It was the AP that turned it into this:

“Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God,” she said. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God’s plan.”

Ahh, the Dread Ellipsis – not to mention, Big Oops on ABC News’ part. Come on, guys: we gave you first dibs on the interview everyone was going for. The least that you can do is do some prep work ahead of time for it. Particularly since Hot Air corrected the mistake a week ago. This was pretty much an unforced error.

I mean, AP? Nobody blindly relies on AP anymore.

PS: I would like to thank Charlie Gibson, by the way: seldom do we get such an obvious tell as this. Anybody spouting this particular exchange as a reason for not voting for the Big Scary Woman can be safely written off as a mindlessly robotic idiot with minimum fuss and muss all around.

Assuming the quotation from Huffington is correct, Gibson presented the statement as a simple declarative sentence, rather than as part of a dependent clause.

The word “that” introducing the clause is critical. She asked the congregants to pray that our leaders were sending them on a task that is from God.

This has an entirely different meaning.

Gibson’s quotation was not even close to being accurate.

  • David_Hinz

left to their own devises the MisogyniStream Media would tell the lie — and NOBODY would be able to correct them!

  • Martin_A_Knight

I mean, it’s all well and good that we politics junkies on the web know it … what about the people who would be watching this on TV tomorrow and hearing Gibson say “Exact words.”?

How do we get them to know what she really said?

  • rbdwiggins

Context and usage are equally important.

Did Charles Gibson purposely choose AP’s narrative in lieu of the actual transcript?

  • Achance

War where the big media had ALL the coverage. I know that almost everything I thought I knew at the time was an outright lie. First a lie ramping up the war at Tonkin Gulf followed by an endless succession of lies supporting the anti-war movement after Tet.

  • MIDELU

I can’t believe she didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine was. It is the most important foreign policy principles of our time. I am so disappointed that Rove et al didn’t coach her better on international relations. This is an embarrassment.

She clarified Gibson’s missteps regardless of whether ABC issues an “update” to their blunder.

She answered the question pretty well. She sounds down to earth, doesn’t lecture and tries to explain.

  • MrMosis

rubbed me in a very wrong way. The deliberate manipulation of her words at the church was bad enough. (It was deliberate- they inserted part of the video feed that showed more of what she really said- maybe due to blog outrage)

But I was at a loss for words to describe the impression this interview left me with. I felt it and sensed it… but I hadn’t arrived at words yet. Until I came upon a K-LO blog-

“…was Charlie Gibson just condescendingly explaining the world to Sarah Palin?”

    YES.

    Anyone else get that vibe?

  • ekevlar11

Do you mean the doctrine that when attacked we respond?

That we go after the terrorist groups that attacked us on 9/11?

  • shawng

And I sent a message to ABC news saying they were wrong to take AP at face value too. You’d think a reporter doing the first major interview would ‘actually’ do in-depth research.

NAH…why would he do that, when he can just quote the liberal blog morass.

    pfft

  • frat

she did not come off real well. Not bad, but not real good either. She just seemed to lack the presence you feel when she is addressing a crowd.

Gibson was pretty hard on her, I think…continuously hammering on the national security thing and whether she was up to it, mentioning how little world travel she has had, etc.

I think a good answer would have been
to say “You know Charlie, there may be some protocols that I need to learn, but I think that I have the ability to make sound judgements and to remain composed under pressure.”

  • MrMosis

to disrespect the phrase the media coined in reference to a particular element of Bush administration foreign policy…. a phrase that is often used in a condescending, derogatory fashion with the intention to disrespect President Bush.

  • tippycanoe

Better for Palin to not be put into a gotcha situation if she misses a point in the doctrine, or if she recites it as if it was learned in a cramming session. There is a downside to this tactic, but the risk is lower in my opinion. Anyway, regardless, this interview will be devoured like a pack of hungry wolves would fresh prey, down to the bones, and then they’ll eat them too. What was not uttered but came through loud and clear was the heavy-handed distainful professorial I-am-more-qualified-to-be-president-than-you body langauge of Gibson. Palin while lower in her chair was forceful, didn’t blink much and leaned in when she spoke. This is good. She also evaded some questions Obama-style. You do what you have to do.

He was certainly condescending. Hopefully, she will develop a strategy for dealing with this attitude in the future.

The Bush Doctrine thing is boulderdash. Hell, there is a very fine line on what constitutes pre-emption. One could argue that all wars contain a certain element of it.

I am not a natural like Governor Sarah, but even I would throw that (Bush Doctrine) back at him. Given this general theme of condescension on the part of the interviewer, I am sure it felt like a trap- which it probably was. I totally would have said, “What exactly are you referring to, Charlie?”

  • jdripper

the headline from this segment is that “Palin Leaves Open Option For War With Russia”. When you drill down into the story you find out she is talking about admitting them into NATO.
Taking her after a 10 hour flight, going though the emotions of seeing her son off to war, and the whirlwind of the past two weeks I think she did more then incredible. I saw Reagan do worse then she did at times. Don’t fret she was fine better then fine actually.

You have a wicked sense of humor and I like your style. That wasn’t my joke of course, I heard it a long time ago, but it seemed to fit.

There is a good column in the NY Post titled Why Our Elites Fear Faith by Ralph Peters. You can find it in their online edition under Today’s columnists. Shows you what Sarah Palin is up against.

  • Moe_Lane

I knock them for it, so I got to knock us for it, too.

  • youthgrunt

she appeared to not understand the doctrine, which is MORE than just knocking back at those who hit you. Bush used the doctrine to justifying going against Iraq when they were NOT an imminent threat. (Note: I agree with Bush on this).

On the other hand, she expressed her own position well, which is less aggressive than the Bush Doctrine. It allows her to challenge the “four more years of Bush” meme.

I thought she had the right answer on NATO and Russia. But I thought she could have justified it a little better. Something on the line of, “if Russia understood that invading Georgia was invading the entirety of NATO, they probably wouldn’t have done it and the world would be a safer place for it.”

  • bs

BertinRI: McCain himself must appalled. He knows better. He must know better than this. The rest of McCain’s camp must know. She is a legitimate danger to her country.

Now I ran Bert’s comment through the Google Translator Leftist-to-English filter, and this is what I got back: Obama must be scared %@(!less. He should have known better than to choose a VP candidate that is such a loser. The rest of Obama’s camp must know this. She is a legitimate danger to the existence of the Democrap party

  • youthgrunt

Gibson is going to be the most even handed interviewer. It was a good choice for her to start with Gibson. It will let her get her feet under her and give her a good feel for what the MSM is going to do.

From this interview, it is clear that they are reading the Democrat talking points well and are only going to ask those questions. The bad news is that those are clearly her weakest areas. The good news is that that means that the questions will be REALLY predictable.

  • slckid

I watched and recorded the interview before my wife had the chance to. I thought maybe it was just me that thought Gibson came across as very condesending, but she said the exact same thing. His wording of questions, in my opinion, were unfair because they consistently put her in a “gotcha” position, instead of letting her naturally explain her position on things. I’m almost mad at the McCain campaing for putting her in this environment for her first interview. Obama got softball interviews for the first 19 months!

  • PaRep

“And by the way, when do we get to hear Barack Obama explain why he thinks he?s ready on day one?”

  • cmkConserv

cause she is too caught up staring into “The One’s” eyes. Loved how she slipped in the whole community organizer thing, cause you know it’s a “racial criticism” and a direct slap on her idol. McCain verbally slapped her for that question, which of course had to mention Palin. And please President Messiah, how would you have dealt with 9-11? Have a tea party with the terrorists or stand on the ruins and vow to avenge what was done to us? Love how to Judy, exceptionalism and better are the same.

  • Kate_Shanahan

is just one more way the MSM can showcase their failing candidate and slam McCain and Palin. It is a joke if they think this is balanced. There must be a way to rectify this.

They have used many pejoratives to describe the Republican candidates and proposals.

  • tippycanoe

…meanwhile, McCain and Palin go back on the road winning hearts and minds. It was bound to happen (first interview)and her performance will be literally drowned out by Ike. For us in the base, more motivation to fight on against the dems and their willing accomplices. I think back at where Bush was when he ran for president, a governor of a big oil state and certainly no more eloquent than he is now, and look what he has accomplished. And remember, she’s no. 2 on the ticket. Perhaps more of hit job were the pious questions of the two bleeding hearts in tonight’s forum. Then the Messiah comes out to tell about his ideas for “volunteer” service. I am sure he’ll provide free uniforms for this too. Back to Palin, Juan Williams said on Fox that she passed (perhaps barely) but “made no gaffes.” I’ll take that any day.

  • The_Gadfly

that WAS the softball interview. From here on out they get worse.

I didn’t watch it because none of the MSM are sufficiently to the right of left to even qualify as socialist these days, but it sounds like Palin did well enough.

  • The_Gadfly

In point of fact, Obama’s new VP Biden used exactly this tactic for one of his opening questions to Clarence Thomas during his confirmation “hearings”. He “quoted” a portion of a speech Thomas gave years earlier and asked Thomas to defend it. In Thomas’s book he notes that it didn’t sound like the sort of thing he would say, but he was on the spot so he tried to answer as best as he could. After the fact Thomas was able to find the speech again, and the verbiage around it made it clear that Thomas was arguing AGAINST the part Biden quoted as though Thomas was advocating it.

Palin and McCain need to expect more of the same and be prepared to deal with it on a routine basis.
