I don’t think that I believe the Palin debate substitution rumor, myself.

[Now promoted!]

It feels a little… forced, not to mention too cute. I can understand why people would believe it, though: it does fit in nicely with the already-established fact that Senator Obama’s foreign policy and executive experience is better compared to the GOP’s Vice-Presidential nominee, not the Presidential one…

[UPDATE]: It’s been suggested that I promote this, so that people can argue about it in comments. Have at it, if you like.

Palin

It would be a great way to throw obama off and show that Palin is ready to step in when the president is unable. Also would give her an even playing field for questions.

What did I miss?

What was the rumor? That McCain would offer Palin as his substitute on Friday? Wow, wouldn’t that be sweet if for nothing else than to give the visual impression that Palin is equal to Barak in the minds of Americans… which would obviously infer that McCain is far and above both.

Odds Obama would accept this? <1% …

where do these rumours come from?

I have never

purchased a pay per view event but a debate between Obama and Palin would pry open my wallet.
Seriously, I think a Palin/Obama debate would work for McCain IF, and only IF, she is truly prepared for such a task. If she is, I say, “Send in the closer!”
Doing so exposes Obama for the fraud he really is. McCain in Washington working on the most important legislation to come down the pike in nearly a century and Obama is out on the campaign trail trying to TALK his way into the white house.

That’s exactly the perception that I think would be generated too. And seeing her debates for governor, she’d do fine if they didn’t tie her hands.

Will they do it? No. Would Obama accept it if they did? Never. Too many downsides for him. Imagine he comes out of the debate looking weak and beaten against Palin. His numbers would drop like a rock to just include the left wing nuts.

outstanding idea....

Obama again wants to avoid actually working and
concentrate solely on his “destiny”…
McCain gets the work done and sends in the

Not going to happen

wiseprince Wednesday, September 24th at 4:18PM EDT (link)

I’ll go on record as saying that this will never happen….but

If it ever did and she held her own and or one the debate it would seem like the smartest thing in political history. President McCain is overseas or for some other reason unable to perform his duties (in this case debate) so Gov. Palin steps in on day one to replace him. Not only would this drastically elevate Palin but it would make McCain seem like the true leader of the pack. If somehow this is the plan then these people are incredibly brilliant (Again, this will not happen). It would certainly be one for the ages though

Let’s just forget this whole idea. I know the idea of Palin going out there and pouncing Obama is cool and appealing but it’s not going to happen and I’m not even sure it’s best for the campaign.

Do it!

woodsman Wednesday, September 24th at 4:50PM EDT (link)

In a game of high risk anyway, I don’t see this as having a downside if Gov. Palin is as capable as I think see can be.

Obama does not want to do his current job during an emergency situation. Campaigning is ultimately what he obviously thinks is more important. Call me if you need me, indeed!

On the other hand, Sen. McCain rolls up his sleeves and dives into the snake pit, and then sends his surrogate to deal with another issue (the debate).

This is indeed worthy of pay per view TV.

If Obama won't delay, this would be a masterstroke

civil_truth Wednesday, September 24th at 4:55PM EDT (link)

If Obama accepts, then Palin gets her chance to put to rest the foreign policy expertise canard against her, she gets to appear on an equal footing with Obama, and reinforces the image that McCain is working on the nation’s business while Obama wants to play campaign games.

If Obama agrees to delay, then nothing is lost.

If Obama insists on appearing but demands that Palin be banned, then it’s up to the debate hosts to decide if they will comply and go forward with allowing him to appear on the stage by himself.

Beyond this, the scenarios become too diverse.

The point is that one way or another, McCain needs to stick to his guns on delaying the debate.

Fitting, but alas not to happen

Palin in the debate Friday would be brilliant

SirGladiator Wednesday, September 24th at 5:02PM EDT (link)

I didnt know anybody in the McCain campaign had thought of this idea, I was afraid they wouldnt think of this idea, its absolutely perfect. The fact is that Palin would be better on an economic debate than McCain anyway, since she’s run a state, cut taxes, cut spending, balanced budgets, and run a huge surplus and given 1200 dollars back to the taxpayers, she’s by far the most qualified of all 4 of the candidates on economic issues.

Putting Palin in as a substitute on Friday would do something else major also, it would be highlighting the fact that McCain was back in Washington working on a solution to the crisis, while Obama is doing the one thing he is actually qualified to do, talk. And if at any point in the debate Obama were able to make a good point that Palin couldnt think of a clever comeback to, she could just turn to him and say something like ‘So why aren’t you doing something about it like John McCain is? John McCain believes in getting things done, not just talking about it’. There would virtually be no way for Obama to win the debate under these circumstances.

Its just a total win-win all the way around, I certainly hope they send Sarah Palin to Mississippi Friday, while McCain stays in Washington and gets results for the American people. The contrast between the two tickets would be absolutely perfect.

How do you Elephant trap the Elephant trap?

The_Gadfly Wednesday, September 24th at 8:01PM EDT (link)

McCain’s the one who played the trap, not Obama. McCain offered to play nice and they both go to DC to work on solving the problem; something theoretically a leader ought to do. Obama tried to take the pawn by not agreeing.

If McCain were to send official word to the debate committee that if the debate can’t be delayed he will send Palin would be the icing on the cake. If Obama then decides to delay, he looks scared of Palin. If he debates Palin, his major advantage (charisma) is neutralized and he has to debate on facts. He’s off balance because he’s been prepping for McCain and not her. She may be off balance too, but she’s shown great adaptability and lands on her feet well. And she connects with middle America in way Obama never will. Obama talks a good talk about women’s rights, but I’m betting his ego would never take to being beaten by a girl, even one who is old enough to drink at the bar.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

Palin vs. Obama, another way this could happen

JLenardDetroit Wednesday, September 24th at 9:50PM EDT (link)

This is hilarious… I would love to see Palin step in and Debate Obama. Agreed, to most thinking people it seems a “no lose” for the McCain/Palin ticket, but the Left Wing Losers will, of course, somehow try to convince people McCain is afraid of Obama… Like I said, HILARIOUS…

Obama is probably wishing all wishes that the Debate NOT OCCURR as he didn’t want any to begin with and avoided the “Joint Townhalls” McCain offered/challenged.

While we’re dreaming, an additional Debate where ALL FOUR CANDIDATES would participate in Tag-team style would be so cool. Would love to see McCain and Palin make a mockery of Obama/Biden clowns. This would be a historical event that would forever change future politics and truly raise the value/importance of the VP choice.
