Alec Baldwin explains the realities of life to the grubby little HuffPovians.

I either just made up "HuffPovian," or I didn't. Either way, it rolls off the tongue, no?

Mr. Baldwin takes the time to instruct the hoi polloi in the way the world operates:

…I wonder, what did some of you people actually think would happen with Palin on SNL?

Saturday Night Live is a comedy show. It’s not Meet the Press. It doesn’t “ask the tough questions” or “set the agenda.” It attempts, with varying degrees of success, to make people laugh. That’s it. Whether they skewer and savage people in order to do so, they don’t care. When you come on a show like that, you are prepared in advance to get worked over. Palin knew that. Palin came on to be a good sport. And she was. She was polite, gracious. (More so than some of the famous actors who come through there, believe me.)

However, I assume that, like Meet the Press, SNL feels an obligation to offer their special forum to any and all public figures and officials who are current. Headline making. And in SNL’s case, would make for a hit show. Several people decried SNL for giving her a spot on the show. You’re kidding, right? The woman is the Vice Presidential nominee of one of the two major parties in this country. Don’t put her on SNL? With all of her exposure and the Tina Fey performance? What reality are you in?

(Via Hot Air Headlines)

By the way, I refuse to believe that that last line was unintentional: I imagine that liberal elites find the netroots’ favorite description of itself just as tediously inane as we do.

What happened here, of course, is that Alec Baldwin understands something that apparently many of our opposite numbers don’t, which is the nature of power in this country. On November 5th, 2008, Sarah Palin will be one of two things: she will either be the next Vice President of the United States, or she will continue to be the current Governor of Alaska (a job which she will be holding for the foreseeable future, by the way). This makes her more powerful, more influential, and frankly more interesting than roughly 99.99999% of her critics – which, to an actor-activist like Mr. Baldwin, makes her simply more meaningful as well. Certainly more meaningful than a variety of commenters on a group blog; hence, the tone. If he could have cracked a digital whip in any meaningful way, he might have done that, too. And that’s pretty much why I fronted this: I try to never pass up the chance to remind my opposite numbers of just what their self-appointed “betters” really think of them.

Justifiably, I might add.

Moe Lane

PS: The skits were actually pretty good, and Alec Baldwin carried off that introduction better than I would have expected, although not better than I should have expected. He does do this sort of thing for a living, after all.

“Alec Baldwin actually said something intelligent and coherent.”

The world must be coming to an end.

I joined this campaign only because I am leaning toward McCain, I actually am fed up with all politicians and the government as a whole. So I am not going to ask what is going to be done I am going to say whay I feel should be done.
Health insurance is ridiculouse because WE (juries) have awarded whining people absurd amounts of money for so called medical malpractice..in SOME cases there were mistakes made that deserved compensation however far more people are compensated when it wasn’t proper, this causes medical professionals to have carrier huge insurance policies which in turn causes them to have to charge more for their services, yes salaries may be too high for the doctors and administrators too which I am in favor of a maximium pay (salary cap) across the board of all companies. another HUGE drain on health insurance companies is that the hospitals and such charge higher prices in order to recover some of the loss they experience from the Medicaid (WELFARE) society ( appreciate this Democrats). I am a Paramedic and I could not tell you the amount of waste and abuse of the system brought on by these people. these people call ambulances to take them to the E.R. for problems that are easily handled at a physicians office however they feel that they aren’t paying for anything because the tax payers, the people who work, the MIDDLE CLASS, are providing them Medicaid, so why not get a free ride in comfort to the hospital, get moved ahead in line and see the ER doc before others and free medications that some of them don;t use for themselves but sell it! All at “my expense”. I say start drafting their welfare checks for ambulances rides and ER visits that are unnecassary. Give these people jobs… I know that there are police, fire, EMS, and other city vehicles that are always needing washed, stations and city offices that need cleaned, city property that needs trash picked up and grass mowed, painting, sign repairs, etc, could you imagine what a city would look like if there were people doing these things at least a couple of days a week, after all these people recieving welfare will need an extra day or two a week to look for real jobs…oops, I mean sleep and have babies!
Next is WAR! we had NO business in Iraq! YES, NO BUSINESS Senator McCain, there were no WMD’s, Sadam may have been a bad person and done terrible things to his own people but it was not OUR business, it should have been up to the people of his country to stand up to him and if they had asked for some help with equipment, weapons, etc, in exchange for some of their resources (oil) then that would have been great, then we wouldn’t be spending so much money and MOST IMPORTANTlY we wouldnt be getting our soldiers KILLED! Afghanistan and Osama is a different story, We NEED to “lay the smack down” there and anywhere else that physically attacks the USA, words do not count, after all you should here what I say about the government myself before we go to WAR because you may be wanting to bomb my house if words are enough to cause it! Get out of IRAQ and let them spend their own money and run their own country, send our Soldiers to find Osama, and here is a hint…HE IS NOT IN IRAQ!
We need a COMPLETE reform in government. I say that ANY politician who is a representative of the people sent to represent the PEOPLE, accepts a penny from ANY lobbyist for ANY reason is immediatly relieved of his/her duties of representing the people. The job he/she campaignes for and is elected BY THE PEOLPE for is to look out for the best interests of the people not THEMSELVES. Politicians should also have the very same taxes, insurances and retirements as the common man, that way, THEY would ensure that they are looking out for the PEOPLE and not just themselves. Salaries need to be reigned in too, I could be wrong about the facts however I think I recall that Mr Biden stated that he has a “modest” income in the 300k range???? along with all the other government benefits…I call that Absurd! not to mention that he says his is “modest” compared to everyone else!!!! I see a lot of room to cut government spending here Mr. McCain!
The economy, well Instead of spending “MY” tax dollars to had out to the GREEDY, why not tell them they caused it they need to live with it! the government could have went to the banks and mortgage companies and told them that maybe they should cut interest rates to about 4% fixed across the board and no closing costs to get people back into their homes and keep others from losing theirs, Afterall, would the bank/mortgage company rather make a little money or go bankrupt? Of course this interest rate would be for primary residence only, they can charge 20% on second homes (or Eighth) if they wish. AND the biggest absolute rip off of the people right now is Gasoline prices, when the gas prices suddenly started rising and for what reason I still don’t know, then that caused everything such as groceries and other neccesities to increase also, which in turn has caused the people who had bought homes they couldn’t they afford to start with to now not be able to pay for those homes in order to buy food and groceries which helped cause the mortgage collapse!!!!!! Make the oil companies pay their fare share because they sure are making the consumer pay, and the government may have a little more revenue coming in!!
Anyway, I have a lot more from where this came from however I have to get ready to go to one of my 3 jobs! I would be glad to share more if anyone is interested.

Your comment isn’t particularly relevant to this article, and is super-long: you’d be better off posting this as a diary. You’ll find the link you want at the top of the page as ‘Create New Diary Entry’.

You should also look into your formatting. Right now, whatever it is you have to say is quite unreadable. (i. e.: I didn’t read it, because WALL OF UNBROKEN TEXT. Paragraphs and stuff, man.)

    And welcome to RedState.

  • civil_truth

Moe, you didn’t post the final paragraph of Alec’s post:

If you think an appearance on Saturday Night Live would sway voters and actually affect the outcome of the election, you may have more contempt for the electorate of this country than the Republican National Committee does. And that’s a lot of contempt.

I mean, what could be a greater insult to a HuffPovian than to be compared to the RNC.

    O the horror, the horror!

Them’s fightin’ words, Alec. I’d watch your back the next couple of weeks if I were you.

I was starting to have a warm feeling for Mr. Baldwin until I read that one. Dang! I thought maybe his little brother was rubbing off on him. Well, at least it’s some improvement.

Stephen was having an effect on Alec…or, more accurately, God through Stephen. But God’s in the miracle business, so who knows what will happen.

I have to say, I’m very surprised by what Alec said. Having been at one time threatening to leave the country should Bush win in 2000 (or 2004….), I was surprised we didn’t see the same hatred and vitriol we’re so used to seeing from his other comrades-in-arms on the left.

Who knows, maybe he’s starting to see the Light :)

guess I should add him to mine.

Palin won a lot of people over with her SNL appearence. But Alec Baldwin’s support is shocking. Wait a minute, Palin’s hot, Baldwin is a dog … I guess it acutally makes perfect sense.

to bring his lecture back home. It’s a long way from inciting violence as he has done in the past.

There has been talk recently of Alec entering politics. My guess is that he has started doing his homework and has begun to appreciate what it takes to actually campaign and get elected, regardless of party…hence the grudging respect for Sarah Palin.

Who knows? One day, Senator Alec Baldwin may be viewed as a symbol of stability, bipartisanship and moderation in the Democrat party. Stranger things have happened.

    Moe,

    You write:

Look, if Alec Baldwin finds something or someone “tediously inane” the obvious storyline (to any sentient being) is clearly the world-annihilating supernova of irony Mr Baldwin has created and the resultant end of mankind and all we have achieved these many millenia. You somehow missed that story.

Alec Baldwin was in a huff because other people were irrationally upset at something. Think about that. Think about Alec’s standing to be upset about that. Isn’t it obvious that what really happened was poor Alec Baldwin got some hate mail about SNL from a few losers and he jumped at the chance to be patronizing at the risk of being hypocritical?

Liberal elites should not be set up as the rational ones, even as a framing device for a criticism of the lefty grassroots. It’s unnatural.

…this duplication of posts happens. I don’t think that should happen.

  • Moe_Lane

    Flattering, but quite untrue.

  • johnt

Baldwin’s condescension that is. The beast like stupidity and toilet bowl level comments seemingly are the face and representation of the new Democrat voter. The dolts haven’t a clue they’re being talked down to, but then that’s why they’re Democrats.

And per one loon, how does one see hatred in Sarah Palin ? Palin doesn’t take liberals seriously enough to hate them.

Too bad it isn’t useful to what he would claim is the correct side.
