OK. I need you folks to do something for me. First off, I need you to trust me.
Second, I need you to center yourselves, get your mental equilibrium level, balance your chi, let the Love that surpasseth all understanding fill your heart… all of you have some reliable way to find inner peace, so at least make an effort to get there. Got it? If no, keep trying: I can wait.
Third, once you’ve gotten into the right mindset I’d like you to read this article about Donnell Stewart. Do not stop when you see the second and third words in the title. Trust me, remember?
I’ll continue when you’re done.
OK.
Wasn’t that horrible? – and I don’t mean that in a mocking or cynical way. That was a genuinely disturbing account about the deliberate using-up of a human being, by people who don’t even really care much. The sheer waste of it may be the most disturbing part…
Waste? Contemplate this. Ms. Stewart is clearly a woman of drive; she travels to Virginia every weekend to campaign (trust me, there’s no need to campaign for any Democratic Presidential candidate in Maryland). She is also clearly committed to her party, to the point where she has gone to more than one Democratic convention. She is also clearly a woman of intelligence and education: you have to have both to graduate from Princeton University. And she is clearly a woman with a will that could turn steel, as witnessed by the fact that she can make her 19 year old son actually accompany her on her campaign activities. In other words, Ms. Stewart has all the qualities that you look for in a county or CD district-level executive. Heck, if she’s any good at organizing more than one person then she’d probably make for a decent campaign manager for a Congressional candidate.
The Obama campaign is having her stand in front of a Best Buy to try to drum up voter registrations.
Metaphors for the Democratic Party don’t get any more apt than this: a hyper-qualified African-American woman being casually and ineptly bossed around by a bunch of white people young enough to be her kids. No real consideration of her feelings or existence, no thought to use her special talents, no… conceptualization that this is an actual person! She’s spending money that she doesn’t really have and causing strain in her existing relationships for those people, and none of them seem to get that. At least, I hope that nobody involved “gets” that – because if they do, then they’re being evil, and I don’t mean that in a cutesy way.
I would love to do something for Ms. Stewart, but I can’t. First off, I don’t have the ability to hand out political jobs at the level that (judging from the article) she apparently deserves (or, indeed, at all): more importantly, she wouldn’t take one from me anyway, because I’m part of the problem that she perceives – and never mind that while the abstract offenses against her dignity supposedly come from Republicans, all the practical ones are clearly Democratic in origin. All I can do is just look on in somewhat incredulous despair at the utter waste of this, and hope that this might shame one or two lurkers reading this into at least temporarily treating better the people that they’re currently exploiting. Heck of a thing when that’s the best you can hope for in a scenario like this.
OK, I’ve said my piece. You can go back now to whatever you were doing before the righteous indignation overpowered my programming.
Moe Lane
PS: Ms. Stewart? On the off chance that you ever read this, and you’re disappointed in and annoyed at your Party’s reaction to an Obama loss (or, for that matter, an Obama win), by all means: contact us. The GOP can find a better place for you than an Alexandrian strip mall.

Dan McLaughlin (Diary) Thursday, October 30th at 10:45PM EST (link)And I do respect your take, Moe. But I read that and saw a woman who is involving herself in a decision of great consequence for the nation – for our security, for our role in the world, for the lives of the innocent unborn, for the tax burdens we carry and our ability to prosper as a nation – and yet, if the reporter has characterized her fairly, she sees only skin color (that of Obama, that of the GOP), and gives no thought to the consequences of anything else. That’s a horrible commentary, to me, on the nature of Obama’s support.

I volunteered and got nothing more than menial tasks (when they actually bothered to call; it took way too many attempts to get a response). I understand the tasks were necessary and I certainly I’m not suggesting I’m above those tasks, but our party needs some restructuring as well.
Our ground game in many states appears disorganized and in many ways has become broken. Very difficult for those outside the loop to get ourselves into that loop.

It’s about CHARACTER Ms. Stewart (hope her son secretly votes McCain, lol)!!! Not the color of ones skin. Did you get anything out of the “I have a Dream speech?” Sure, probably the “Cash a Check” part, but certainly not the “Content of One’s Character” part.
The Dem’s and MSM all blather on about RACIST behavior (when they can level it at Whites), but it is just plain OK and perhaps “cute” when CNN, and every other Liberal biased outlet, has some old black folks talking about how glad they are they’ve seen the day that a “Black man” is elected President and that isn’t SOLELY RACIST!?!?! With 95% of Blacks polling/voting Obama, it is just a coincidence, right?!?!
It’s about the content of ones Character perhaps you should go here/hear and remind yourself of it: MLK jr inspired
I guess content of ones character (like the politically corrected version of the very word Racism) is only applicable when it is White toward Black and never vica-versa and most definitely not Black-to-Black (an automatic pass).

The reason it is so sad
whizkid (Diary) Thursday, October 30th at 11:54PM EST (link)is that she believes all the pixie dust about hope and change, and she doesn’t understand that she is being used.
Also, it’s sad that she sees herself as BLACK, not AMERICAN. I am an American who happens to be white. I would quickly vote for a black candidate for any position from any party who was pro life, believed in free markets and deregulation, felt that the USA should win her wars and support her troops, and so on.
In other words, I have a certain agenda I would like to see advanced, and I vote for the person I feel will advance it the most. I don’t get the sense that the same is true of her, from the article.
Elections are about IDEAS, not IDENTITIES.

finaljeopardy Thursday, October 30th at 11:56PM EST (link)I feel the same pride in Sarah Palin as the VP, being a woman and having seen how much that can effect your existence (and you’ve no idea how I mean that.) Despite all of my objections to a Barack Obama presidency, I will never complain of reverse racism when I see blacks supporting him, except when I hear accusations of racism from them or see fraud being carried out, for example.
It was very strange to hear this supporter talk about how she went to Princeton with Michelle and felt too uncomfortable begging Michelle’s white assistants to allow her to say hello or deliver a note. She bragged of the diversity of the convention crowd in Denver, too, then spoke scornfully of the Republicans. I presume she doesn’t speak to them, either, but feels Obama unites the nation. Weird.
She is a reliable Democratic voter who may or may not work for campaigns, but can be relied on in this one. And it is cynical of the Obamas that they have put in their time, made their speeches and established their street cred and take the black community for granted. But as much as I object to Obama and his vision of and for this country, I know he feels he is doing the right thing. It is just the wrong thing.

Moving and frustrating at the same time
antisocial (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 12:08AM EST (link)First the moving part… Her commitment is great. No matter whom she is supporting. And I can feel her pain. The way she is treated. Any campaign should be proud of such committed volunteers.
Now the frustrating part… She is highly educated. How can such a person not see through the radical Barack Obama? This guy does not believe in constitution. He wants courts to implement radical change. He wants to “fundamentally” change America in terms of foreign policy, economy and liberty(fairness doctrine). The same fundamentals which made America the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the history of mankind. As far as race is concerned nobody is saying there is no racial divide. This divide has been there since a long long time. Has America progressed in terms of race relations since 30 years? Absolutely. It might take another one or maybe two centuries to go away completely. But this is a 2 way street. 95% blacks voting for Barack is as racist as some percentage of whites(not sure abt percentage) not voting for him because of color of his skin.
I am sure this woman will do great in conservative club.

septembergurl (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 1:01AM EST (link)really….is that your take on this piece? Because mine was the opposite.
This woman goes around collecting grievances and slights. The kids dress down on Sunday and have pizza…that’s a slight on her and her dressed up friend.
She wants to give Michelle Obama a note but she imagines that the “white girls” will sneer at her so she doesn’t do it but quietly seethes about it.
The campaign people call her by her first name because that’s what you do in a campaign and she takes offense at that and bristles they should call her Mrs.
There’s a long social history of antagonism between blacks and asians because of the often peremptory style of asians (hey Donell, er I mean, Mrs Stewart, Asians are like that with white people too…it’s a different culture) So the guy (young, Asian,) gives a “quick and emotionless” briefing and she, of course, takes offense that he doesn’t greet her personally and so on and doesn’t respect her and yada yada.
Now, this is a volunteer, who has a fulltime job in the bureacracy handing out gummint cheese of some kind, so she’s not a staff worker on the campaign and she doesn’t have any political experience (Taking the kid’s tuition money and using it to pay your own way to the DNC in Denver doesn’t count as experience). So she’s doing the kind of part time work we all have done in campaigns — leafletting, calling people, registering people etc.
I’m at a loss to see why you think she is being abused by the campaign. This work is its own reward.
Don’t get me wrong — I think it is a great moment in our history long overdue frankly and I am thrilled to see so many people involved in the campaign. It’s my opinion that obama is not worthy of these people’s hard work, faith and sacrifice, but that’s a different story.
What you have here is someone who can’t get beyond a lifetime of real and imagined slights to enjoy the experience, she forces everyone around her to share her commitment.
Yes, it is a good experience for her son, but…here you have a nineteen-year old kid living off his mother having lost his football scholarship. Tough break, but did you ever hear of something called…let’s see…it’s that thing that you’re going to get after Barack is elected…oh yeah, a job. Or go in the army and learn to support yourself. I think that would be more useful than resentfully handing out leaflets.
No, the only one in the bunch who has his head screwed on straight is the boyfriend. He puts it like this:
“When I wake up on election day it will be tuesday. If Obama wins it will still be Tuesday. I don’t see how at the level people are working here, Obama’s election will change their lives…I think it is great, but I don’t see him becoming President changing my life that much.”
Exactly. Of course, he’s a Maryland State Trooper (thank you!) and he knows a bit about life.

I was a retread named Zombie Flanders / randomkid. Friday, October 31st at 1:40AM EST (link)Why do you say that black people blindly support the Dem? Is it because they vote in such large percents for Dems? Pick an arbitrary black person…the fact that other black people vote for the Dem has no bearing on the level of blindness in their support. If you say that there is some group mentality going on, what distinguishes black people from some heavily pro-Republican group, like evangelicals, Mormons, or White Southerners (in MS (the most extreme example) in 2004 85% of white people went for Bush))? Or for that matter some other heavily pro-Democratic group?

What happened to real journalism
walter_hanson Friday, October 31st at 2:48AM EST (link)In reading this story one thing I thought of was what happened to real journalism.
The lady for example is from Maryland and is quoted as bad mouthing Republicans for being alike. Why didn’t the reporter ask if she support Michael Steele? After all wouldn’t it be great if Maryland had a black senator.
The lady for example goes to PA to help Obama. Did he ask why she didn’t support Lynn Swann? Did he ask what did she think of Governor Rendell calling people racists.
Did the report ask what he thought of Obama saying that people are voting against him only because he’s black.
Did the reporter just once ask what policy or policies does she hope Obama supports?
Did the reporter ask if money was tight how much did you spend to go to Denver? Wouldn’t it be better to spent on your car?
And I think I disagree with some of the comments about how she thinks she’s being misused by the younger whites. She has a set of value like you shouldn’t eat pizza for a dinner with your feet on the table. The saddest part is that this lady apparently has some set of conservative values and we the republican party can’t appeal to her and other blacks.

blooch Friday, October 31st at 7:07AM EST (link)Donnell sounds like someone else we know:
“Too monotonous for Michelle, who, White [the partner in charge of the firm’s advertising group, of which Obama was a member] says, complained that the work he gave her was unsatisfactory. He says he gave her the Coors beer ads, which he considered one of the more glamorous assignments they had. Even then, he says, “she at one point went over my head and complained [to human resources] that I wasn’t giving her enough interesting stuff, and the person came down to my office and said, ‘Basically she’s complaining that she’s being treated like she’s a second-year associate,’ and we agreed that she was a second-year associate. I had eight or nine other associates, and I couldn’t start treating one of them a lot better.”
White says he talked to Michelle about her expectations, but the problem could not be resolved because the work was what it was. He is not sure any work he had would have satisfied her. “I couldn’t give her something that would meet her sense of ambition to change the world.””

MikeO Friday, October 31st at 7:30AM EST (link)I did as you said. I sought my “happy place” and read the linked article. I don’t get any sadness from this, though, because I’ve written-off the left.
Mrs. Stewart is nothing more than a bitter collection of perceived slights and grievances that arise from her ingrained racism. She occupies an alternate reality founded on the same class-struggle talking points that define Teleprompter Jesus. Speaking of whom, please re-read his Philadelphia speech from March and filter it through what we now know of his views of The Constitution and wealth redistribution. The underlying message of that speech is “different identity groups have many reasons to be at one-another’s throats, but let’s pull it together long enough to stick it to the rich.”
Anyone is free to disagree with that interpretation of the speech. Anyone is free to gloss over the racist motivations driving Mrs. Stewart to support That One. But one thing is undeniably true, and that is that Mrs. Stewart volunteers at cost to herself to canvass for the monster who voted twice as a state senator to defend infanticide.
I have to admit...

I got a call confirming various times and jobs and I interrupted the young man and said, I will be at your beck and call from Saturday through election day. He apologized and said, almost reverently, oh thank you, we look forward to having you here.
I don’t care if they have me make phone calls, knock on doors, go and get coffee or stand in front of a big box store. That’s not the point. I will be there for support and I have no illusions that they will mine me for my talents, hidden or otherwise.
This type of article in the Sun-Times concerns me. If the young senator from Illinois does win…
Gotta agree with Dan....
MelZ (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 8:48AM EST (link)Though after reading you Moe, I could see where you were coming from. She is driven…but I think she is driven for the wrong reasons. Or maybe I am wrong, and there is no “wrong” reason to be driven?
In any case, (and I will preface this by saying I have a lot of black friends and would certainly say this to them.) What I saw is what I assume to be the soul of the average black American. They want the guy that is “one of them”, they want the guy that is going to promote THEIR agenda. They don’t care how it will effect the country.
I want the guy that is going to promote the country’s agenda…you know life, liberty and all that “stuff” that I guess some have forgotten is our country’s agenda.

furrier (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 9:35AM EST (link)“Stewart went to Denver for the convention and when she donated to Obama’s campaign $1,000 of the home-equity loan she took out to pay for Desmond’s tuition”
I’m sad for Desmond, whose tuition fund is depleted. Furthermore, what’s the legality of using $$ from a home-equity loan in such a manner?
Oops!

It makes me sad as well
Terilyn Donaldson (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 9:52AM EST (link)The woman is obviously obsessed with race and believes that a BO presidency will somehow erase the slights she feels as an AA. It appears that she has bought into all the rhetoric that BO spews so well. That is the sad part.

MikeO Friday, October 31st at 10:07AM EST (link)I’m pretty sure you had it right as “illusions” in sense 1b, “an erroneous concept or belief.”
What I learned from this article is
ILLINOIS_CONSERV (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 10:12AM EST (link)Ms Stewart sees a black candidate..period. That’s a shame. I admire her drive but her goal of electing an African-American as president is short-sighted. She wants so desperately to right the wrongs of the prejudice she has endured that she falls victim to the same human frailty of prejudice herself. She cannot see past skin color. I will never vote for BHO and that has nothing to do with skin color. He is polar opposite to my political beliefs. If McCain was Black and Obama was white I would still vote for McCain. I cannot understand the Colin Powells of the world who willingly sell-out their core values because of the skin pigmentation of a particular candidate. Is that not racist? I used to admire Powell but his flip-flop is very disappointing. If Ms Stewart really understood the issues and looked carefully at each candidate with a blindfold on, I believe she would make the intelligent choice. I am not an African-American and she is right in saying I will never know what it means to have an African-American as president. But I do pray for that day that MLK desribed where “a man is judged not by the color of his skin, but on the content of his character” And from what I have learned about BHO’s character, I could never give him the privilege of my vote.

Fallon (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 10:54AM EST (link)I’ll keep my delusions of grandeur while continuing to confuse illusions and allusions. This place makes me a little nervous when it comes to my word usage, grammar and spelling. I remember the “to(sic) smart” remark by a poster and thought there but for the grace of God go I.
Obama will fail and Blacks will pay.
Tbone (Diary) Friday, October 31st at 11:23AM EST (link)As you can read from the article, this woman is totally wrapperd up in being black. Probably got into Princeton on preference and now has a government job from which she can not be fired. Unfortunately, there is a growing number of whites who see her as the person of privilege because they couldn’t get into an Ivy league school and the local government wasn’t hiring white people because of diversity quotas.
Futher, given Obama’s privileged treatment by the media from network anchors to Letterman/Leno, many whites see Obama’s candidacy as the ultimate black preference program.
Now, we may have a black President who, we who are sane know, is bound to fail in both his domestic and foreign policies. His failure will be seen as much, or even more, as a failure of the “affirmative action” that got him elected as it will be of his impossible policies.
For this, the perception of blacks actually being a privileged class will prevail and all blacks will suffer as his election and failed presidency will set back race relations in the Country for at least a generation.
