Clinton Ascending: Obama supporters surprised, confused.

Just wait until someone tells them about the Easter Bunny.

I am almost moved to pity. Almost. Via Hot Air Headlines, the first faint hints of objective reality harshing the mellow of our next President’s Totally Biggest Number One Fans supporters:

Cabinet post for Clinton roils Obamaland

Barack Obama’s serious flirtation with his one-time rival, Hillary Clinton, over the post of secretary of State has been welcomed by everyone from Henry Kissinger to Bill Clinton as an effective, grand gesture by the president-elect.

It’s not playing quite as well, however, in some precincts of Obamaland. From his supporters on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, to campaign aides of the soon-to-be commander-in-chief, there’s a sense of ambivalence about giving a top political plum to a woman they spent 18 months hammering as the compromised standard-bearer of an era that deserves to be forgotten.

“These are people who believe in this stuff more than Barack himself does,” said a Democrat close to Obama’s campaign. “These guys didn’t put together a campaign in order to turn the government over to the Clintons.”

And here you thought that you’d have to forgo evil laughter for at least two years. Go ahead, let it out.

Let it all out.

In hindsight, this is actually a fairly obvious move. The Democratic Party’s primary was pretty divisive, and there was of course no way that its base was going to accept Senator Clinton as VP. On the other hand, it’s increasingly clear that Vice President-elect Biden is going to be more or less useless in his ostensible role as providing natsec experience for President-elect Obama; they were hiding Joe by the end of the campaign. And on the gripping hand, they need somebody who has actual foreign policy chops. So… Secretary of State. Good enough place from which to drive foreign policy, particularly if Gates stays on at SecDef for a while.

Notice that this completely contradicts Peter Beinart’s argument that SecState would be a sinecure for Senator Clinton. Then again, Beinart seems to think that either Biden or whoever-it-is who will end up being the NSA will somehow be able to win a turf fight with Hillary. Given the way that Obama’s staff is already top-heavy with people who have an existing relationship with the Clintons, this sounds somewhat… naive… of him.

Then again, so do some of the people in that Politico article. Mostly the ones going “Umm.”

PS: It would be remiss of me to not also note that there doesn’t seem to be much love for the antiwar movement in Obama’s foreign policy picks. Odd, that.

I voted for Clinton in 1992 (my first election!) for, among other reasons, desire for a less meddlesome foreign policy and for reasons pertaining to feminism.

I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.

Man, that is BEYOND reckless. The Chicago Machine will get steamrolled by Clinton Inc.

    No contest.

The good news for conservatives is, we have our gridlock.

This is not such a bad thing. Hillary will stand up to that nut in Iran unlike Obama who probably wants to invite him to a state dinner.

Will Hillary be the Brutus to Obama (Caesar)?

Stay tuned as the drama unfolds!!

and then I can enjoy the show.

Besides, the Sec State has little influence over the machinations within DoS, the real power and damage comes from the entrenched elites of the DoS bureacracy. That bunch of Ivy League, professional diplomats is a real nest of vipers, IMO.

    Hillary Clinton?

I don’t think she’s Secretary of State material. Sure, it’s a good gig for her, but is she good for the office?

Hmmm. I think she’ll actually do well at running the State Department. I’m not so sure that she’ll do well at statecraft. Even so, how will we be able to tell? What are the performance metrics here?

But you’re totally right about the Biden irony. Our side knew what a doofus he is, but the Democrats had their ideological blinders on.

What a revelation is must have been for Obama, when he realized that Biden was a total goof. How could Caroline Kennedy not have known Biden would be Biden? What else did they get wrong :-) ?

It’s not so much her as her husband in this case, I think.

I was less old then and am less young now, but I made my share of poor choices in prior elections.

and take all the expert diplomatic advice they have to offer. They have seldom been advocates of standing up to our adversaries.

the Undersecretary of State, not the Secretary.

This is a good thing since Hillary is a very poor manager (see, eg, the Healthcare reform effort, her own Presidential campaign, etc). The Undersecretary (I believe it’s Negroponte currently) usually but not always comes from the ranks of the career foreign Service and generally manages the administration of the Department, while the Secretary deals with policy.

As Moe points out correctly, the eclipse of Joe Biden as the foreign policy wise man of the Obama Administration (the need for which was demonstrated during the Presidential campaign) means that obama needs someone at least credible on foreign policy.

As for hillary, I think she knows she’s not going to be President (2008 was her best shot) and this gives her a major role on the world stage.

This is so funny. All those loons that voted for “Change we can believe in”, thought they were free of the Clintons and Bush’s for ever. Hahahahahahaha. Now we have 31 of the 47 appointments made by the saviour, former Clinton people. And, the Attorney General will be none other than the DEFENDER of John Hinckley who is the one who shot Pres. Reagan. Just think, we still have one more Clinton to deal with in the years to come if not sooner – Chelsea. I have always tried to deny the kooky conspiracy theories, holy crap, we now know that “The One” is really none other than Mr. William Jefferson Clinton. I think the food taster will be much more needed by Billy Bob. Better get lots of pop corn, we are in for a long Ludlum Thriller.

Barack Obama did not get the Clintons’ endorsement for free. The Clintons don’t give free lunches – period. It’s not so much that this is an opportunity for poor, defeated, Senator Hillary. It’s that this is an opportunity for Obama to pay back that favor he owes the Arkansas Godfather. The leftist illuminati may play that a Democratic Inauguration is like the “day of my daughter’s wedding,” but there is always a favor to return later. Maybe the ill look he wore at this press conference was less about the intelligence briefing he’d sat through, and more about the horse head on his pillow that morning…
