Why is Charles Rangel (D, NY-15) still Chair of Ways and Means?

This is a serious question.

Note the use of the word “Another.” Via Instapundit:

Another Tax Issue Surfaces for Rangel

WASHINGTON — Representative Charles B. Rangel’s legal team is reviewing his tax records to determine whether the congressman received a homestead exemption on a house he owned in Washington while living in several rent-stabilized apartments in New York City.

The situation is potentially troublesome for Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat who is already the subject of a wide-ranging internal House investigation stemming from an assortment of ethical concerns.

[snip]

Republicans have criticized Mr. Rangel, claiming that he has made a mockery of the Democratic Party’s promise to reform Washington’s political culture when it took control of the House in 2006. Republicans have demanded that he step down as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which writes the nation’s tax laws and is one of the most powerful panels in Congress.

I know that this is going to sound like a bizarre notion for a lot of Democrats, but in point of fact a notion isn’t automatically a bad one just because a Republican’s suggesting it. The New York Times has been hammering Rangel on this subject since July; the New York Post reported yesterday that he was double-dipping on homestead expenses; and he is in fact under investigation for ethics violations right now. This is not a politically motivated hit job; there are legitimate concerns about his actions and activities, and a growing body of evidence that Rep. Rangel has been using his position to provide him with cover for abusing tax laws. Under the circumstances, and until this is cleared up, I don’t want him to have oversight over the House committee that regulates the American tax code.

So why don’t the Democrats agree?

Moe Lane

PS: Try to avoid the sillier answers, apologists.

While Republicans can’t even stand wide stances. And, it always helps when your party is in a majority.

except expose, as vociferously as possible, Democratic wrong-doing and ineptitude in Congress.

Had McCain run against Congress instead of Obama, he may just have won. The greatest failure of McCain and the Republicans is the wide spread belief among the ignorant masses that the Republicans actually still control Congress.

Of course, THAT sort of article is the Times’ idea of being hard on Rangel [bracketed words are mine]:

Republicans have criticized Mr. Rangel[hey Times, why don't YOU criticize him?], claiming [why don't YOU claim?] that he has made a mockery of the Democratic Party?s promise to reform Washington?s political culture when it took control of the House in 2006. Republicans have demanded [why don't YOU demand?] that he step down as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which writes the nation?s tax laws and is one of the most powerful panels in Congress.

The Times wants to give the appearance that at worst, Rangel inadvertently stumbled afoul of the law. Note that “Rangel?s legal team is reviewing his tax records to determine whether the congressman received a homestead exemption”. Interesting, that, since his legal team is probably the one that cooked up this corrupt scheme to begin with.

Dave Durenberger (R-MN) got his whatsiss in the wringer when it turned out that he was getting a congressional reimbusement for rent on a condo that was owned by a partnership that he had an interest in. The Times was one of the publications that ate him alive over that.

So is the double standard due to party affiliation, skin color, geographical location, or all of the above?

There is nothing but tolerance for these crooks! This guy would get elected again, and again and again here in NY.

He should be held accoutable in Washington, bc the voters will not do it.

The foxes are guarding the chicken coop-its infuriating!

and the broken Republican message machine.

I know it’s hard for Republicans to get any message out through the so called objective press but there are Republican outlets out there that are being ignored. Fox News and the numerous talk shows out there…

And where are the Republican bills calling for censure and removing him from over site of a committee that has jurisdiction over the areas of his alleged malfeasance?

Force a floor fight on this so it get’s attention….attach a motion for his removal to every bill. Force the issue!

This is Boehner to show the last two elections were the fault of his deputies and not on him…so will he rise to the occasion?

I’ve hammered this repeatedly at my column. Rangel should not keep the chair; that is a no-brainer. That Pelosi is tolerating it says it all.

What do you think he’s got on his fellows? Because that’s the only answer that makes sense.

And if we had real media instead of infotainers they’d be hammering this as well.

This is a classic example of the Dem double standard.

And Rangel is a drop in the bucket where Schumer, Dodd and Frank swim. Those are just a few of the fishy fishies.

Chris Dodd should be under investigation for taking the sweetheart loan deal with Countrywide and
have to step down as the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Chairman.
