FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Apparently, Axelrod “misspoke.”

As Jake Tapper noted, Obama claim to not be involved in Blagojevich’s search for a replacement Senator:

Asked what contact he’d had with the governor’s office about his replacement in the Senate, President-elect Obama today said “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.”

…was a direct contradiction of what David Axelrod said earlier: “I know he’s talked to the governor and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them.”

As Allahpundit notes, Tapper’s promotion was well-deserved.

They’re claiming that Axelrod misspoke, which makes you wonder what he was actually trying to say in the first place. Because (H/T: Instapundit) Left-blogger Katie Allison Granju ain’t buying this:

Ummmm….I have to say that this statement is pretty hard to believe. Of course the outgoing Senator and his staff would speak to the governor of the same party and his staff about which individuals might be shortlisted for the vacant seat. There would be nothing wrong with such conversations, as long as no quid pro quo scenario was discussed or suggested. That would simply be a reasonable and prudent conversation for Obama to have had with Blagojevich, and it’s hard to believe that he did not.

I’m still currently taking the position that Obama’s not directly involved in this scandal, mostly because it’d be a really dumb thing for him to do. However, I must note that the more I read of this mess, the more I get the impression that somebody baked a Stupid Pie recently, and a lot of Illinois politicians lined up to get a slice…

Moe Lane

PS: Because God loves us and wishes us to be happy: Blagojevich has no plans of resigning.

he is involved and ate some of that stupid pie :-)

Heads he “misspoke”. Tails the comment was “taken out of context”.

remember the “seriousness of the allegations” BS when the Dem’s were head-hunting Republicans? There is REAL corruption in IL Politics and OBAMA himself is of/from that ilk/brand!!! Can’t wait until they manage to tie some ACORN clown to all this!?!?!?

For those of you who thought all this continued Chicago THUG politics talk was “conspiracy theory” …. wake up and smell the coffee… the BS continues on and on… Wonder what Blahgo got for standing arm and arm with the Union folks at that Glass place?!?!?!

  • DavidS1787

and call axelrod as a witness to see just what the truth is…..

  • DavidS1787

I wonder what his statement for today will be?

  • DavidS1787

  • E Pluribus Unum

Seems to be a lot of that going around.

  • cookcountyconservative

and it?s going to get better and better – I think The One is ass-deep in Rezko?s deals, if he can nail him – that would be beautiful. But probably will be another Whitewater deal going on forever and ever. Daley?s the big fish though and he?ll be even tougher to get. He?d never be as careless as Blago! What a flat-out sociopath he his!

Hopefully they?ll all be tripping over each other to get to Fitz?s office and take him up on his offer!!

  • Dan McLaughlin

Remember, Axelrod has spent years representing Mayor Daley and claiming there’s no machine in Chicago. He’s not just some Beltway guy who has no idea what is going on in Illinois.

  • Rottimer

What he has done is not only corrupt, how he got caught also exposes how unbelievably stupid he is. A 16 year old kid that had watched the Sopranos would have carried out corruption more subtly than this guy. It’s like he wanted to get caught.

It should be interesting what falls out of this tree the more Fitzgerald shakes it.

  • Kowalski

,,,oh, well, I won’t recapitulate it here.

It’s better just to read the Wikipedia entry on George Ryan for an introduction to how Illinois went from one corrupt governor to the next. They just can’t seem to stop themselves in the Land of Lincoln.

Patrick Fitzgerald prosecuted Ryan, as well. He’s found his niche and built his career there because you can’t throw a rock in Illinois politics without hitting someone corrupt.

  • Kowalski

The reason Illinois governors and other politicians in Chicago can get away with this is because of a climate of FEAR. It’s essentially a dictatorship and so many people are corrupt that they’re all afraid of bringing each other down…

The result is that the “big guy” at the top doesn’t even have to be subtle. Nobody would even dare to question his purity because to do so would cause an avalanche that would only bury themselves.

They’re a bunch of thugs, in other words. And the big thug is usually the most vulgar and banal of them all, as Rod Blagovich has shown himself to be.

  • Ginger Cleary

He became Governor because that is how the “Chicago machine” works… and IL is IS Chicago.

But even a stark raving idiot can see the phonyness of the “misspoke” crap.

  • SpL

I see that Obama is surrounded by Clintonistas. Teflon Willie had a good long time of not being the fault of anything (polar opposite of Bush). Based on the timing this may be a way to rid the Senator/President Elect of many an old political rival in his hometown — with the Republicans cheering on what seems like unseemly work against an unseemly politician.

Now….if the crowds start tying Obama to this, he already has the press saying that he was in opposition to this fellow and that the Republicans just want to soil his good name.

This could all work out beautifully for Obama especially with Rahm and the Clinton folks around (including Bill & Hill), they’re just getting warmed up.

  • cump

President Elect Obama spoke with the corrupt Governor before he DIDN’T speak with the corrupt “D” Governor. See, no news here. Continue on you way mainstream press, nothing to worry about…no trail here…Governor..dirty politics…Rezko…dirty politics…obama…no need to stay, move on…uh, oh look that GITMO Bay thing looks bad again…

There was some point where it was “suggested” that Rezco might be telling some tales… one has to wonder (or, at least HOPE) he has or will now begin to be willing to.

  • KyleH

I, for one, hope that the whole stinking lot of Chicago Democrats gets taken down with Blagovich. IL needs a good housecleaning. I think Fitz is going to need a lot more help to do it.

As soon as you pick it up you see a corrupt politician was underneath it.

  • Moe Lane

And it’s demanding that you apologize for comparing it to a member of the Illinois Combine.

  • Jaded

that “were taken out of context” and complete “distractions” one thing Obama is not is Clintonesque!

and now he’s for pretending it never happened, and will get cover from the MSM Oblahblah Fan club

From the Blagojevich criminal complaint (page 16) issued today:

“Cari was a significant fundraiser for Democratic causes and was previously the
national finance chair for Vice President Al Gore?s 2000 presidential campaign.”

(In the plea agreement [in connection with the Tony Rezko case], Cari pled guilty to the attempted extortion of JER, an investment company attempting to obtain a State of Illinois investment.)

And now Cari (a moneyman for Blagojevich) is an informant to the FBI regarding this Blagojevich case.

The reading gets more interesting all the time…
