Blago, Burris, and Reid, Oh my!

Game on.

And so it begins.

Secretary of the Senate rejects Burris appointment

(CNN) – The secretary of the U.S. Senate on Monday rejected the certificiate of appointment for Roland Burris, named by Illinois’ controversial governor to fill Barack Obama’s Senate seat, according to an aide to the secretary.

The aide said Secretary of the Senate Nancy Erickson rejected Burris’ appointment because it does not conform with the Senate rule requiring that the secretary of state — in this case, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White — must sign the certificate of appointment along with the governor.

White has declined to sign the certificate, siding with some Senate Democrats who say Burris should not be seated because of the cloud over Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is accused of trying to sell Obama’s Senate seat.

Although Dana Bash needs to get some better researchers: every Senate Democrat is on the record as saying that Burris should not be seated*. There are a bunch of regular Democrats who are objecting to the Senate’s stance on this, true: but they’re disproportionately African-American, and there are no African-American Senators.

Which I believe is part of the point.

The festivities start at 12 noon tomorrow, and Reid’s probably praying for an ice storm, because Burris is coming. Reid, of course, has done what he always does in difficult circumstances – go to Mitch McConnell for help – but I can’t begin to imagine what Harry has that Mitch would want, this go-round. Or at least want more than the sight of Harry Reid emulating George Wallace at the Senate door.

So, will Reid cave? Maybe, maybe not: it’s not like he’s got a good option at this point. If he doesn’t, the aforementioned George Wallace scenario plays out. If he does cave, then we’ve established once and for all that Harry Reid can be forced to retreat even when he has a working majority in the Senate and the President of the United States backing his play. If Blagojevich can do it, trust me: so can we. And we will. And then we’ll laugh.

Then there’s the third option: that Reid lets Burris in, but doesn’t actually let him do anything like vote or sit on committees or propose legislation. In that case, I think it’s a fair question to ask if Senate Democrats will at least let Burris use the white people’s bathroom and water fountains…

Moe Lane

*It goes like this:

A. Any Senatorial pick by Rod Blagojevich would be unacceptable to the signers of the Reid letter.
B. Roland Burris is a Senatorial pick by Rod Blagojevich.
C. Therefore, Roland Burris is unacceptable to the signers of the Reid letter.

The Senate Democrats are setting themselves up for a most epic fail: failing to constitute their own membership properly.

    Wow.

If you’ve ever seen her in the press pool, she is the smuggest twit you’d ever glance upon. At a very recent Republican rally she was covering, she had a look on her face that resembled smelling moldy meat.

Similar to her coverage of Governor Palin’s popularity in Alaska, facts seem to evade Dana Bash.

This’ll be the best TV event since, well, ever.

I seem to remember from my childhood hearing a story about how the world ends, and it has something to do with large numbers of people acting like selfish, venal clowns while incredibly momentous events are happening all around them.

Obama hasn’t even taken the Oath yet and the Democrats are proving that they shouldn’t be trusted to run a third-rate traveling circus. Unfortunately for the rest of us, that means we’re all pretty much on our own.

Blago’s Pick was born and raised in the small warehouse of Ace hardware in southern Illinois. Blago’s Pick was was first used in 1955 to dig a big hole in Illinois.

It was also used in the famous Reid cave-in, receiving a new handle after a horrible accident with a large white Senate security officer.

He was finally exchanged for a different pick, when it was found out he was unacceptable to the signers of the Reid letter.

At this point, the best thing the Democrats could do is let Jon Bon Jovi decide whether Buress is a Senator or not, and then take him on tour with them.

After all, if he can hold a concert to help Hillary Clinton raise money to cover her campaign debt on January 15, he’s as qualified as anyone in the Democratic Party to decide whether Burress should be a Senator.

Didn’t these Democratic Senators ever read the actual wording of the Constitution? Nowhere it says that just because a corrupt governor appoints a Senator-designate, the US Senate can avoid seating him at all. Really, all Reid have to do is to shut up his mouth and let Burris do his thing, and have 2/3 of Senate expel him.

It’s really a black and white thing…oops! There I said it, sorry, Moe, can you forgive me?! Please?

    Forget what I just typed, it’s really a non non-issue! ;)

Sure it does, right there in the Constitution.

The Senate can seat, or not seat, anyone they please.

Just because an activist SCOTUS tried to impose its will back in ’69 and say that the Constitution doesn’t say that doesn’t mean squat. Because, in fact, it does.

While it is far from me to say that Burris is a man with a powerful and huge ego, it is not sufficient to expel him solely on that basis and for being Blajo’s pick as well.

Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behavior, and, with the Concurrence of two-thirds, expel a Member.

I’m no constitutional expert, but on its surface, it seems obvious to me that a member should only be expelled for disorderly behavior, and as far I know, Burris has not engaged in any kind of disorderly behavior. Being asked to take over Obama’s seat does not equate to having engaged in criminal activity, unless evidence was provided.

I’ve got nothing against Burris, though I think he is an idiot for taking up on Blajo’s offer. Maybe it’s just that Burris likes to have attention from media. I don’t know, but to me, Reid and his ilk is overreacting to this whole thing. Until evidence surfaces which clearly demonstrates Burris did engage in some sort of criminal activity in connection to Obama’s vacated seat, Reid and Co. should just shut up their mouths and move on.

How can Burris be seated when he doesn’t meet the criteria? He has no felony convictions or even any pending indictments…I mean really who does he think he’s hanging with Mr. Rogers? No street cred what so ever and that’s a must in ILLinois.
