Yet *another* Democratic Mayor arrested on felony charges.

You know, normally these people just *metaphorically* steal from the poor.

It’s perversely impressive when they actually, literally steal from the poor. Very 19th Century, only with better sanitation.

Baltimore mayor indicted on theft, perjury charges

BALTIMORE — Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted Friday on charges that she accepted illegal gifts during her time as mayor and City Council president, including travel, fur coats and gift cards intended for the poor that she allegedly used instead for a holiday shopping spree.

A grand jury indicted Dixon on 12 counts, including four counts of perjury and two counts of theft over $500. She was also charged with theft under $500, fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary and misconduct in office.

The State Prosecutor’s Office, which has been investigating corruption at City Hall for nearly three years, said Dixon received holiday gift cards for four years from several people. Prosecutors said the gift cards were to be distributed to needy families, but were instead used by Dixon to buy electronics _ including an Xbox, a PlayStation 2 and a camcorder _ clothes and other merchandise and also handed out to members of her staff.

Not much more here to report, except to read the whole thing: it’s the usual tawdry story of adultery, perjury, money laundering, larceny both petty and grand, and general chicanery. There’s no indication at this time that Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley (D) is involved in Mayor Sheila Dixon’s (D) alleged criminal activities; no doubt he’ll be cleared of any lingering suspicions once the trial has commenced. If you like people who steal from poor people, that is.

       This confirms my suspicions of these petty city-states being run by Socialist-Democrats like a personal kingdom.  While the city burns, while the law-abiding, tax-paying citizens seek the first opportunity to emmigrate out of the wastlands that their hometowns have become, they sit on roofs of their posh homes and play the proverbial fiddle.

       Having recently taken a “scenic” trip through Baltimore en route to a visit to the Harbor, I got to see the state of some of the residential districts in the city.  All that “revitalization” (per California’s Jerry Brown) seems to be going into posh high-rise apartment/offices being constructed in all the high-visibility areas of the city, while many of the less visible neighborhoods are gradually getting run down, being vacated and boarded up.  So much for “progressive” government.

       I wouldn’t be surprised, if that Russian pundit’s predictions of America’s demise proves at least partially true, if cities like Baltimore, Oakland or Philadelphia end up becoming their own independent enitities.  Imagine the map of pre-Industrial Germany (then known alternately as Prussia or the Holy Roman Empire) inflated to cover the territory of the United States.  Instead of the predicted six countries (note that none of these were projected to preserve the laws and traditions of the United States proper), you’ll get a hodgepodge of petty republics, city-states and a few larger, somewhat more stable territories with a wild mixture of old-school republicanism, democracy (usually of the Socialist variety) and outright (often communist but also localized ethnic or racial) dictatorship.
