Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) must now repair jobs-destroying mistake.

Tell me again how the American people don't care about pork. Chuck.

You know, like you did here:

…because you just realized that they actually do care when it comes to keeping their existing jobs, huh?

Via the Corner:

Sen. Schumer has pledged to undo a provision included in the stimulus package that will make it nearly impossible for New York’s banks to hire foreign workers through the H-1B visa program.

The amendment to the stimulus bill, proposed by Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Chuck Grassley, D-Iowa, originally would have banned the visas for any company that received money from the Troubled Assets Relief Program, or TARP. A compromise lifted the ban, but companies will still be required to hire from the growing pool of laid-off American workers first. Advocates say that the mandate is so onerous that it will virtually stop banks from bringing foreign workers into the country.

[snip]

“When they require someone with a language or other skill who they feel is the best person for the job, if they can’t bring them to New York, they will move the function,” says Wylde. “That’s what’s happened in the past when we’ve had a shortage of the H-1B visas.”

Sounds like somebody decided to slip in a bit of the pro-union pork – the unions loathe H-1B work visas, mostly because there’s no good way for them to wet their beaks – and Schumer didn’t notice until it was too late. You see, his problem is that the banks in his state that would be affected by this are international… so if they can’t bring the workers into the country, they can take the work out of the country. Which is important because they’ll also end up sending other people’s work out of the country. Work done by people who are registered to vote in the State of New York, which is why Schumer’s now going full guns to get this rule reversed in future legislation.

You know what would have stopped your little problem cold, Chuck? Reading the damn bill in the first place. Which is your job, and the only one that an indulgent nation has ever required you to have. So lose the swarmy attitude next time and, you know, actually do some work for a change.

If you don’t want to do that, I hear that the local McDonald’s is hiring. With your skill set, you could probably start as an assistant manager with only a little finessing of the interview.

Look to his donors, if you wonder why he’s suddenly upset. (Heck, Schumer’s probably running unopposed in 2010, given how juicy the other targets on the ballot will be)

and that he should be mocked and ridiculed to no end.

However…I will note that unions are not the only ones who loathe H-1B visas. Many of us who toil as grunts in the I/T industry aren’t too keen on them either.

He and his party rushed this caca piece of legislation into law, so it’s his problem to deal with.

Don’t be rushing to bail him out, and give him the cloture he needs to get out of the fix that he and his party put themselves in.

One that should not detract from the stipulated idiocy. :)

My apologies for distracting us from the matter at hand. :-)

With all the layoffs on Wall St. I doubt there is a shortage of qualified workers for any position that may be open.

Good Luck with that. The wheels of government move so slowly……
He is probably wondering how many campaign dollars this is going to cost him. I am sure this will be repeated hundreds of times as the porkers themselves discover things they don’t like….

Make the Dems debate the bill publicly. Force it to go through the committee process, so hearings can be held on it. Insist on enough floor debate time for our side to send its best orators in there* and get some good partisan licks in.

Here’s a chance to inflict some wounds, and weaken the Dems a bit in prep for 2010. Don’t blow it.

    * “best orators” doesn’t include any of you three. I recommend you quietly refuse to vote for cloture, stay seated and keep your mouths shut. We’ve heard enough from you for quite a long, long time.

I don’t think he bothers too much about stimulus or economy or even voters. As Dan McLaughlin said in his comments above its all about money.

They have to keep their “friends” happy.

    How could you? :-)

    God help us!

the economy, certainly not about the voters, or even money. It’s not about stimulating anything but government growth and ramming the most radical, liberal, bundle of leftist social agenda down our throats in history! And I bet he knows that!

The fact is, the Democrats don’t CARE what the American people think. They (the liberal Democrat estalishment) decided years ago that the American people they claim to care so much agout are actually idiots. In the eyes of the people running the Democrat party these days, the only people fit to make a decision are politicians and government bureaucrats.

In other words, “The only way you can hope to be free is if you allow those who Know Better Than You Do to control every aspect of your tiny, ignorant, existance”.

Do remember posting rule #1. This was extremely mild by Internet standards, of course, but they’re the rules we have, and I’m glad for ‘em, makes it much more enjoyable to follow this site to have a certain base level of civility and a slight curb on what people will think/say here.

Beyond that, love the post. If there’s one thing Democrats will never be able to do to us, it’s take away our ability to laugh and ridicule their mistakes. If you can’t laugh, what can you do? Best not to get too serious about anything lest the inevitable fall come too hard. Keep up the delicious and completely deserved snarking!
