Tea Parties using Web 2.0 to organize, expand.

Yes, I used "Web 2.0" to describe something. Sue me.

Instapundit linked to an article about the Tea Parties, and the tech that they’re using:

Anti-stimulus tea parties light up Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and social media

In the latest example of how user-produced media can capture so-called “massively-shared” events in a way mainstream media can’t, a wave of images, blog posts and videos from a nationwide protest has been washing across the Web. The protests, dubbed “tea parties” by participants, were held Friday in several U.S. cities including Portland and Washington, D.C. as a response to what demonstrators see as unfettered spending and encroaching government as represented by President Obama’s economic recovery plans.

[snip]

Though even a year ago it would’ve been a slow and difficult process to chronicle a widely scattered protest such as this, the online community is now mastering the art of high-speed media sharing, a trend that can unite geographically disparate communities via the Web. Much of the sharing is now facilitated by the fast-growing messaging site Twitter, where today the keyword “teaparty” was one of the most frequently used terms. Users sent out a flurry of updates about attendance, links to photos on Flickr and Photobucket, and videos on YouTube and other sites.

The protests appeared to be rather small and did not attract much coverage in the mainstream new media. But interested observers had a remote window into the activities taking place in cities such as Tulsa, Okla., Austin, Texas, Nashville, Chicago, Lansing, Mich., Houston, Hartford, Conn., and Los Angeles, where a group that gathered this morning on the Santa Monica pier. (This blog reports that, as a part of that action, former “Saturday Night Live” actor Victoria Jackson read the definition of “socialism”).

If you’re a reader of science fiction – and by the way, you should be; you’re in the future now, baby, and those people were the ones thinking about what it was going to look like while the rest of the population was watching sitcoms – you’re probably thinking about Larry Niven’s “flash mob” phenomenon right now. For those of you who don’t, Niven worked out (several decades ago) that any kind of instantaneous or near-instantaneous, interactive form of communication would result in situations where interesting events would spawn crowds out of nowhere, with the lag time being dependent on how easy it was to actually get there. Niven used cheap and easy commercial teleportation as his communications method – but it turns out that our current growing network of real-time online commenting and posting will work just more or less as well (better in some ways, worse in others).

The question becomes, what now?  The model clearly works, but how do we get it to 10K a rally instead of .5-1K (10K is not the goal, either: it’s merely an arbitrary Step 2).  That’s an excellent question, and I’m sure that there are several dozen people out there who want to answer it: not being one of the ones who can, I suggest that you go over to the people who are actually emerging as the leaders of this new movement and help them figure it out.  I further suggest – heck, implore – that the people who don’t think that they have the answer, but do have decent organizational skills, do the same thing; there’s never enough of them in a movement, and one person who can run a meeting is worth five who can make semi-clever comments on the Internet.

I include myself in that last snark, by the way.

Moe Lane

PS: I think that I’ve mentioned the Larry Niven thing before.

Love the lack of coverage by the MSM

red4ever (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 9:47AM EST (link)

When the first protests against the Iraq war were held the day after it started, I was living in Austin, TX. The University held what was deemed a big rally on campus. There was live, breaking news coverage, reporters everywhere. One woman I worked with remarked on how large the crowd was and how it seemed the majority of students were against the war. I heard the rally numbers — about 1000 people. I looked at the woman and between laughter pointed out that the “huge” crowd was less than 1 percent of the total campus population. Hardly an overwhelming statement against the war.

Now, we have those same numbers (or close thereto) showing up for Tea Parties and nary a peep. Flickr, Youtube and Facebook are great ways to spread the word that the the MSM refuses to even aknowledge exists.

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.

We need big numbers

Scope (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 9:49AM EST (link)

kind of like the crowd numbers Obama got for his rallies, or the crowd numbers Palin was getting for hers. I also think that the message can’t be only against the Obamanation spending sprees, but, more importantly it should include a message against Socialism. I wonder just how many D’s and R’s even know what Socialism is. They hear “redistribution of wealth” and they think- yeah I’m gonna get some of the rich peoples money. They fail to understand that it’s more than about money and entitlements, it’s about Government power and control over everyone. It’s a false promise to make all equal where equality doesn’t exist. You can be equal “or” free, but you can’t be both. The Libs push equality for everyone, the Conservatives push freedom. I’d love to see Freedom rallies over Tea Parties. Where true freedom exists, the Government isn’t taking your money out of your pocket and putting it in your neighbors.

Until such time as

USNJIMRET (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 9:54AM EST (link)

the crowds approach, or exceed, Obama numbers, the DBM (Drive By Media) will marginalize or ignore.
Or until such time as there is an outbreak of ‘violence’.
I used the quasi quotes because, as we saw with the supposed racial shouts at a McCain rally, the media is more then willing to ‘report’ as fact some imagined, or planted, negative event.

And we had quite a bit of coverage. I even made the news. I have to say it does tick me off about the marginalization of all that went on.

The Boston Tea Party was started with much less and look what it did. This is not about sides as we know, but about principles. If I’ve said it once, it’s a thousand times-
There is nothing right about being taxed and unrepresented. The lack of deliberation is disgusting at best and worse- not a job to be found in it. And the second bill has 9000 earmarks.

Let's put this into perspective

jcheney Saturday, February 28th at 11:56AM EST (link)

Obama has been President for a little over a month, and there have already been 10+ rallies in cities all over the country, just on friday. The media hates conservatives, but there will come a point, once the numbers keep growing (like what we saw at Palin rallies) that they will have to report on this. The MSM will throw out insults and make ad hominem remarks about individuals who they will cherry pick out of the crowds because maybe they couldn’t communicate their message so well.

red4ever is correct in that somehow it was ok to protest the Vietnam war. Why? because they media said it was ok.

After attending the Seattle rally myself, I can say the feeling of wanting a say in my freedom and liberty was contagious (there was a copy of the US Constitution for everyone to sign their names on). It will become so contagious that every person at that rally, will bring one or two more people to the next rally and the media won’t be able to ignore them.

So, don’t underestimate the infant stage of this movement by over analyzing the numbers and how the media covered it. The blogs need to keep covering it and linking to lists of dates and locations of events. I made a post on Smart Girl Politics about my attendance, and had a response from another local Washingtonian that she would have gone if she knew about it.

Let’s get excited about this. Protest rallies are typically for liberals. Well, that is about to change.

Actually closer to 30+ cities held Tea Parties

I wrote a Diary on Redstate last night (Tea Party in Nashville TN a huge success) to document the event – over 500 in attendance on a rainy cold Friday at noon. I agree these events will grow – several are more are scheduled in March and April. I like Scope’s comment about making the message about Socialism – that topic came up in the speeches in Nashville.

what Obama and the Dems want to do, like

Government, not you, will be making decisions for your life
Government will call CO2 a polutant so they can regulate every small business in America

Teaching us a lesson with higher gas/oil prices
Obama’s green economy is areturn to the 18th Century

But in the end it won’t matter so much what the labels are. The lower standard of living will speak volumes for itself, I suspect.

The word “socialism” doesn’t seem to have the same impact with today’s America as it had when I was growing up (I’m 50). I think that’s why the messages during the campaign never resonated, especially with the younger generations. All they heard was that they would have their taxes cut, and the government was there to take care of them. Messages about the debt we’ve burdened our children/grandchildren with ARE resonating, and so will the messages you suggest in your comment. But as you said, the proof will be in the pudding – when they start actually LIVING the consequences of this election, there will be no more denial. Of course, by that time it will be too late…..

unless you learned about socialism/communism at home or on your own. The whole communist influence in the “progressive era” and in the union movement is either glossed over or not talked about at all as history and government students are taught that it was all a good thing in reaction to Robber Barons and evil monopolies etc. The Cold War to the extent talked about at all is glossed over as a geopolitical struggle with the US seeking to impose hegemony and the Soviets backing countries that resisted the US. You can get through high school and college (taking only required history) and the only thing you’ll hear about communism is how the evil Sen. McCarthy, a Republican, went after poor actors because he thought they were communists. Therefore, communists must be good.

Achance I am under 40

mom2oneson (Diary) Sunday, March 1st at 11:45AM EST (link)

I learned about it in school. I didn’t understand it like I do now but I learned about no free lunch and we compared communism vs capitalism and saw the dangers of it, like people’s incentive to work will go away and gov controlling business and the less freedom of religion and basically it is evil. We studied the early Americans and how people basically fought for independence from government in their lives and freedom of religion. I did not understand why anyone would want a gun or how the 4th Ammmendment works (I thought of gov was the electric man that worked for the city, why not have him in your home? ) but I was taught about the right to bear arms and a man’s home is his castle. (I thought the redcoats were gone so why do we need a gun? ) :D
We learned freedom freedom freedom but I really did not understand the difference. I thought most of was tied to religion (the bad Communist in China that made Christians hide) and we were blessed to be able to have church without persecution. Also will civil rights we learned about the real thing and how the leaders also taught it was tied to responsibility.

I grew up seeing politicans involved and helping. They had offices in the neighborhoods and people could go there if they had a problem with a gov office and they would help them resolve it. I remember one showing up at fundraiser for a school trip. His office paid for all of our passports too. I saw politicans someone would a doctor or a lawyer dedicated to helping others. I thought they cared and worked hard to serve us. It is a 180 from there here in FL. I don’t know if things have changed or just this area is corrupt politically?

So much has changed now that I can’t teach the same things to my son. He has great textbooks but we have experienced our rights being violated by government. I teach him he has these rights but he knows the government breaks them. I don’t know if we should teach it in past tense, these should be our rights but the gov has changed? It’s sad. :(

It is not in our character, Moe,

Achance (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 12:18PM EST (link)

so we’re going to have to learn how to do this protest and maybe even civil disobedience thing. Most people on our side of the ditch protest by calling and making an appointment with a legislator, writing their rep, or writing a check for or against somebody. Singing songs and carrying signs ain’t our thing. We don’t even have any of our own songs and chants; the left owns them all. Maybe we can start with, Hey, hey/Ho, ho/B H O has got to go/ See, old memories come back.

Seriously, non-violent protest from the right is a new thing and something we all need to think about how to do – emphasis on non-violent, maybe even with some moderate religious overtones. Say, a NASCAR level of religiousity. We can count on the Left to ultimately respond with violence and unfortunately, that is probably what we need to get real MSM attention.

I thought most of the republican base was suppose to be white, uneducated, i.e not college educated, uncoothed, gun loving rednecks from the south. Thats according to the MSM at least.

As for this protest and maybe even civil disobedience thing, I am sure that when we put our minds to it we will outperform the Left in a heartbeat. Come on it took us less than 2 weeks to get where we are now, so I say just wait and see and do what you can even if it is only the money thing.

we needed to get churches behind this

mom2oneson (Diary) Sunday, March 1st at 11:52AM EST (link)

Pastors and central leadership seem to be so scared of anything policial though. That would be the key place to get this going, put something in the church bulletin and announce it from the pulpit. This is where many people spend their time volunteering.

Obama lies, America dies

izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 2:24PM EST (link)

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Any national organizing underway?

Is anyone out there providing a central clearing house to publicize, distribute post-event photos and attendance numbers. Fill up YouTube. Give Boehner, Cantor, Pence and the other conservatives ammunition showing mass disagreement with Obamunism and the Chosen One. I’m sure the various radio show hosts would at least mention up-coming events.

Need to plan Tea Parties in Blue Dog districts and districts of squishy Republicans to remind them that we do care about the spending…despite Schumer’s claim.

We need a symbol that is instantly recognized at rallies, in photos and can be shown anywhere…I like the Gadsden flag (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag)

Need Tea Party signs or Gadsden flags popping up at every Tea Party and every public appearance by the Chosen One and the various Demogogue leaders.

I plan to purchase a Gadsden flag to fly at home, and am trying to find a bumper sticker vendor.
