What the ban on Yucca Mountain reminds us.

I do like what Francis wrote, but I want to really drive it home to my people – which is to say, science fiction geeks. Let me strip this down for you. There was a quote that Jerry Pournelle likes to repeat, from one of the anti-nuclear power people: The only physics I ever took was Ex-Lax. Remember that one? Remember how it made you laugh at the idiot?

Well, did you vote for Obama? – because if you did, you voted for the guy who takes people like that idiot seriously.

And, do you know something? I told you so.

then they shut down nuclear power, which is the true object of enviro-wackos.

The prospect of living without electricity is charmingly romantic – right up to the moment you have to begin doing it.

Luddites like Tim Noah are happy about this, of course.

Every consumer that uses nuclear-generated electricity … from New York to California, from Illinois to Texas … has been paying for Yucca Mountain for almost thirty years. There’s $19 billion left in the fund … Congress wants that money, and Harry Reid doesn’t want Yucca Mountain. Even though he’s probably happy that $12 billion has already been spent on it.

Congress created he Nuclear Waste Disposal Fund … like Social Security Funds, they’ll spend it as fast as they can.

Oh … incidentally … Nuclear power doesn’t contribute to global warming, and costs far less than half what any other power source provides.

last year when an avalanche wiped out the line from the hydro plant and put us on diesel generated electricity. At $0.45 Kwh, you think very seriously about whether you want to turn on that light! All the outside lights went off. The hot tub got drained and winterized. Multi-light fixtures got cut to the minimum by removing bulbs. I put a clothes line in the garage and the dryer was NEVER used. We cooked with the microwave if at all possible. We watched the smallest TV. Nobody used a hair dryer – NOBODY. We lived that way for two months and it was a PITA. You can do it, but you damned sure don’t want to!

I didn’t. Tennessee’s answer to cutting usage is raising the rates.

I didn’t see a “Written by” line there, so I’m curious if Jerry Pournelle wrote it (there was some web address on the page that included his name).

If he did, I may just have to buy a couple of his books and see if his fiction is as good as his essays…

It’s never romantic when hosptials are using the generator. :(

A number have already sued the federal government over payments to the Nuclear Waste Disposal fund and won. Expect more suits and more payouts.
