It will come to a surprise to some that apparently the former administration is now the font of every economic evil…
Obama’s New Tack: Blaming Bush
In his inaugural address, President Obama proclaimed “an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics.”
It hasn’t taken long for the recriminations to return — or for the Obama administration to begin talking about the unwelcome “inheritance” of its predecessor.
…mostly because it would imply that there was ever a time when this administration didn’t take that stance. Even the article itself doesn’t really support the title, as it admits a good ways in that President Obama started off on blaming the previous administration for its ills on or about January 26th. What’s been happening since then is much more accurately described by what was apparently the original title of this piece, which was “Obama Sharpens His Reminders That He Inherited Fiscal ‘Mess’ From Bush.” This also makes the ludicrous assumption that no blame accrues to Democrats for our financial meltdown – but at least that title doesn’t pretend that this is any sort of new behavior on Obama’s part.
None of this is particularly surprising, of course: anyone who was paying attention during the election was pretty much automatically dismissing the Democrats’ claim of ‘post-partisanship’ as the errant nonsense that it was*. This administration started with the iconic image of its partisans disturbing the transfer of power ceremony with mocking chants, and it hasn’t gotten particularly better since. Between the Imperial Speakership, “I won,” and the frank admission that the White House intends to not ‘waste’ the crisis, it has become increasingly clear that the President and his party intend to rule as liberal Democrats.
Which is, by the way, their privilege: they did in fact win. But it’s also why the President’s numbers have slowly but surely dropped over the last month. As I understand it, that dip is coming from Republicans coming to grips with the idea that it’s business as usual, after all. The Democrats are still as happy as clams, probably for the same reason. the independents haven’t made up their minds yet – and predicting their response is always difficult. Hence the ‘new’ tone from this administration: they know that they’re losing the Republicans anyway, and eight years of treating Bush as a secular Satan has left their base with a taste for hearing more of the same, so they might as well go more explicitly negative and hope that the Middle won’t object too much.
Will it work? Define “work.” It may keep the President in office past 2012, but the acute stage of our economic crisis will be two years old by Election Day 2010. If it’s still going on at that point, blaming it all on the former President may not be the potent talisman that a lot of freshman Congressmen will be needing at that point.

*I will admit that some of the foreign policy picks did raise false hopes in that regard, but then I had forgotten that the Democrats only had the choice between Clintonites and antiwar progressives. As the former can fake foreign affairs competence for quite a long time, and the latter can’t be trusted to come out of the rain… well. Not really a choice at all, there.

Hi, guys, what took you so long
NickDeringer (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:00AM EST (link)I’ve been saying this since day one. All bad things will be blamed on Bush all good things will be due to prayers to The One. Hallowed be his name.

Eh, that schtick
fulcrum Saturday, March 14th at 11:11AM EST (link)Not so sure how I feel about it anymore- “the one”. It was funny for awhile, but even my dad gets irritated when people say that- and this is a guy who took beamed with pride at being able to take me to caucus for Lamar Alexander in ’96 and listens to Rush religiously.
It detracts from serious complaints; the left can go “Pfft, see, they’re being juvenile, they’re the only ones who ever said that about Obama, we knew he wasn’t perfect,” etc, and use it against Republicans, or try to use it as a broad stroke. “See, this is the face of Republican opposition; no ideas, only people bleating ;The One’!”
I know how you feel, brother, but just keep that in mind. Thanks.
Then you 're not paying attention
NickDeringer (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:16AM EST (link)Just sayin’
NickDeringer
I'm not with you on that...
phxg (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:16AM EST (link)Sure all ills will always be Bushes fault but the people, especially those who were for Obama are already getting fidgety over the market performance of THEIR 401k’s.
I suspect if the economy doesn’t improve substantially by 2010, Obama and the Dems in general are going to have a steep hill to climb for reelection. After all, they were going to fix all ills.

I don't share your optimism
NickDeringer (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:56AM EST (link)The media is commit to propping up Obama no matter what. We need a real media strategy to pike through the high walls of protection around the Obama and the Dems. I have to laugh when people tout his falling approval rating. GWB won re-election with an approval in the 40s.

The GOP needs a good media strategy or the Obamulan Empire will be able to blame all the bad on GWB while hailing BHO as the Messiah.

It takes a lot of effort, but it'll turn, it always does. nt

I think the best way to defuse this argument...
fulcrum Saturday, March 14th at 11:05AM EST (link)… for conservatives is to step up to the mistakes that were made, now- before the 2010 election season rolls around. Yes, spending went unchecked, things like the PATRIOT act should have been looked over more, etc- but we know we made mistakes, we’re going to learn from them, and most importantly, just because we were wrong then doesn’t make the other guys right *now*.
Then we need to work on bringing forward bona fide ideas to the table to tackle the various crises facing our nation; we need to get back into the habit of grassroots activism, getting people in every corner of our great nation involved with working towards those goals and building those ideas.

TNJim (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 9:53PM EST (link)…for the sake of arguement that Obama’s right, that he did “inherit a bad economy”. So why does he then take steps to extend the recession by signing the porkulus bill, the earmark laden budget, and may even be considering a TARP 2? He must be planning on using Bush as a whipping boy for a long time. I’ve said before, it’s stuff like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd’s mishandling of mortgages, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that got us here more so than the previous administration’s spending excesses.

Criticism of the Republican Congress? OK, here ya go… They were too moderate and not conservative enough. We as the base didn’t like the go-along-to-get-along with the Dems they exhibited. Criticism of Bush? He signed onto too much spending. But terrible? Nope. I don’t buy it.

ss396 Saturday, March 14th at 11:43AM EST (link)I seem to recall that the Democrats took charge of both houses in our bi-cameral legislature as a result of the 2006 elections. The appropriations bills were crafted by Democrat-led committees, with huge majorities in both houses. How then is this appropriations bill the fault of President Bush? Was it because the Democrats had to compromise themselves in order to produce a bill that would be signed by the President?
I also recall that Rep. Pelosi declined to submit the 2008-2009 appropriations bill to President Bush, preferring instead to wait for the ascendancy of a certain President Obama. Bush could not sign something that was not submitted to him. How then is this appropriations bill his fault?
If you pay someone to sit on his butt, you can’t be surprised when he does.

A majority of the American people are victims of failed government schools, and through the left’s relentless propaganda campaign, they’ve been convinced that the “last eight years” were a complete failure. “It’s All Bush’s Fault.”™
Tragically, forming any other conclusion requires rational thought and an historical perspective that can’t be found in government schools.

The blame Bush tactic will live long and well
Scope (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:59AM EST (link)There are few Republicans, or should I say supposed Republicans, that will ever stand up and correct the lies that it was all Bushes fault. Fox News is getting just as bad as MSNBC and CNN and the rest of the Liberal channels. I am hearing more and more from the likes of Nina Easton, Kirsten Powers and Juan Williams making wild accusations, that it is all Bush’s fault, with supposed Republican counterparts never ever correcting their statements and saying anything about the fact that the Democrats had control of the Congress since 2006. The supposed Republicans never ever bring up the fact that Dodd and Rangel thought that there was no problem with the sub-prime mortgage market years ago. The liberals get on Fox, make their accusations, and their statements stand unchallenged. It amazes me how many people believe that Fox really is fair and balanced.
Obama lied. The stock market died...
franklinslocke Saturday, March 14th at 12:16PM EST (link)To add to what ss393 said, not only did the Dems have all of the Congress, but also the stock market did not take a serious dive until after Obama was inaugurated. After each action Obama, Geithner, or the Congress have made, the economy reacted to it. It got worse, not better. No Bush there, So, if these policies were so good, the economy would have improved, not worsened.
The fact is that the economy is reacting to the poor and indecisive moves of the government. It is not as much as what they have done, but how they have done it. Everyone sees these moves and does not have confidence in the government; therefore they do not have confidence in the economy.
This has nothing to do with Bush. It has all to do with the actions of the current President and Congress. They bred this fear and doubt.

Link the economy to Reid, Pelosi, and Congress
David123 (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 12:22PM EST (link)Look at this correlation.
The economy seems to correlate with Dem control of Congress so make that an issue in 2010. I suspect that Reid and Pelosi are less popular than President Obama. Also, a lot of the blame for this economic mess belongs to Barney Frank and Chris Dodd; while only voters in Connecticut and massachusetts can remove them from office, voters ever where can put them in the minority part in Congress if their own states unwisel keep them.
If the economy started to tank in 2007, who’s fault is that? Let’s answer that question in 2010.

The majority of the public.....
jazzycmk (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 1:42PM EST (link)….is fairly oblivious to macroeconomic factors and politics beyond the party affiliation of the President.
Bush was Republican so the state of the economy was the GOP’s fault. Polls taken after the election showed that over half of voters were unaware that the Dems had been in control of Congress since 2007, a point kept very quiet by the MSM during the election. So for all Obama’s bleating about the lack of oversight, it was his party that had majorities and the leadership position on all those oversight committees.
Obama will continue to blame Bush. When he starts running for re-election around Jan 2011, his mantra will be “We can’t afford to return to the same failed policies of George W Bush.” So despite the fact that he will have never directly faced off against Bush, he will have been running against the specter of Bush for about six years by the time election 2012 rolls around.
But Obama’s song and dance will get old. Economy and jobs will continue to struggle. Obama will get out there every now and then and give a prime time address to try to turn public opinion in his favor. MSM will swoon. Dems in Congress will call it a another tour de force. But if people don’t start seeing real results, it will cease to matter that the guy can give a pretty speech (as long as he has his teleprompter).
