NRCC targets Democrats using Speaker Pelosi.

I was originally going to go with something from Coleridge, but an albatross necklace is not exactly the image that either I or the GOP was trying to invoke, here.

The NRCC will be launching a barrage of television, radio, phone, and physical advertisements today at specific Democratic-controlled House Districts. The theme of the message: Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s attacks on the CIA, the implications of those attacks, and the curious disinterest in selected House Democrats in facing up to those implications. The television ad for MD-01′s Frank Kratovil sums it up:

If the CIA deceived the Speaker of the House, then the CIA is committing a crime. The GOP has been saying for a couple of weeks now that Speaker Pelosi needs to provide either evidence or an apology; and when she provided neither, the GOP called for a bipartisan investigation of the CIA. Speaker Pelosi and her cronies in the House had it squashed. So the NRCC is going to ask selected voters how they feel about the idea that their legislators may be supporting a slanderer and liar.

Specific breakdown of names/type of advertisements below the fold: I’ll be updating with the scripts once I get them.

But I think more people would respond to attacks against the Dems if the message focused on the out of control spending, the potential damage that Cap & Trade will cause, the trial balloon of a VAT, and the creeping takeover of the private sector.

Issues like the CIA require a nuance that few other than political junkies can appreciate.

Its’ the lying thats the piont

Her district includes Fort Huachuca, home of the Army Military Intelligence school. It also includes Davis Monthan Air Force Base. It is a leaning R district.

Many, many folks here understand the importance of NOT abusing your intelligence agencies. Many of the folks in/around Fort Huachuca have worked with or for the CIA.

Giffords has been able to hide her weak, wishy-washy positions on intelligence and national security matters (e.g., she declared that Bush’s surge strategy in Iraq was “not smart”) because of a very friendly local media. You try to get her to discuss these matters, and she simply won’t, unless it’s in front of a friendly audience.

These ads need to run in her district!!!!! They will force the issue!

… but voting with your caucus 89% of the time shows you have at least a bit of an independent streak, doesn’t it? Didn’t “The Maverick” vote with his caucus at a higher clip than that?

Pelosi said the CIA lied. Don’t vote for Frank Kratovil.

Don’t get me wrong, Pelosi needs to pay politically for her childish behavior — probably with her speakership. I just don’t see how a fair-minded voter will not be anything other than confused by this…

  • djemi

And give his ethical problems regarding fundraising I’m not at all surprised he’s one of that targets

Why are they running ads now? Isn’t the election two years away? Given that the American audience electorate has an attention span of less than six weeks, this seems a waste of resources.

  • ATLconservative

…what makes you think they’ll remember it then?

Why not tell us about the race? :)

PS: You too about MI-07, djemi. :)

The other half is that it’s not actually OK for the Speaker of the House to accuse the CIA of committing crimes and then squash any investigation of that.

  • Brian Hibbert

Tying people to Pelosi is OK, but I don’t think it really changes too many votes. She just isn’t well known enough outside political circles and those of us who pay attention are not going to be changing our votes one way or the other. Maybe this will work in Maryland and northern Virginia where many of the CIA employees are, but outside that area?

I’ve been thinking of putting together an internet issue advocacy ad with the above tag line. Something along the lines of:

Debbie Halvorson voted for a 1.5 Trillion dollar deficit.
Debbie Halvorson voted to give billions to AIG.
Debbie Halvorson voted against ethics reforms.
Debbie Halvorson voted for giving Chrysler and GM billions which didn’t save them from bankruptcy and won’t get paid back.
Debbie Halvorson voted against a responsible budget.
Debbie Halvorson voted for Cap and Trade which will increase your utility bill by $3000/year. (well not yet, but soon).
    {etc, with a whole list of her votes on issues that anger people…..which I have to research.}
    {pause}

Is this the representation YOU voted for?
    {pause}

    It’s time for new representation.
    _______________

I think we have to point out what these people are actually DOING to this country and let people know that it matters who their representative is. This script can be used against any Democrat in the country.

  • eburke

already. Clinton and the DNC did this extremely well in the mid-nineties and helped set up the narrative for the ’96 & ’98 elections.

So, do ya think the NRCC could spare a couple of staffers for Cornyn and the rest of the knuckleheads at the NRSC? They could use the help.

  • eburke

They could use your help…big time.

What a *great* ad! The Messiah is destroying the free enterprise system and capitalism right before our eyes and all we here from *our* side is crickets chirping.

  • Brian Hibbert

But thanks for the kind words about my concept.

I’ve never produced an ad or anything like one so this is going to be a big time learning experience.

  • eburke

seem to have any sense at all.

  • eburke

The reason your proposed ad rocks is because in my every day conversations with every day people (those ‘uninformed’ voters as someone described them a few weeks ago) these are the issues that resonate with them: increased energy prices…bailing out irresponsible home buyers…baiing out big companies (like GM & Chrysler)…bailing out the big bankers and mortgage lenders, spending gajillions of dollars, etc.

The issues right now are low-hanging fruit for articulately espoused conservative policies. Unfortunately, our ‘leadership’ is out on listening tours and endorsing people like Charlie Crist.

    Sigh!

  • Kyle-MI

You missed the part in the commercial where Kratovil voted against investigating the CIA on Pelosi’s claims. Because if they did investigate we would find that Pelosi is full of stuff that can’t be mentioned on a family friendly website. Kratovil is covering for Pelosi’s incompetence.

  • Next93

They’ve been letting the Dems get away with this sort of crap for eight years (outrageous accusatins and claims with no substantiation), and NOW they’re digging in thier heels? I find myself asking the Passover question: why is this night unlike all others?

Does this represent a sea change? Has the “new tone” finally been abandoned? Can we expect that the next time someone compares Bush to Hirler the GOP will demand an appology? Or the next time some leftist pol claims that our rights were lost under Bush, the GOP will demand an accounting of exactly WHICH rights have been abridged?

Does all this mean that those who claim to speak for the conservative cause have finally developed some testicular fortitude?

Gabby Giffords has talked like a Blue Dog back in the district, but has voted with Nancy Pelosi >90%. The local newspaper gives her a pass (no surprise there). However, we now have two very attractive Republicans in the race to oppose her. Jesse Kelly and Andy Goss are young, conservative, energetic veterans – either one of which will be a strong contender. This is a district that went for McCain in the last election while re-electing Giffords. She is vulnerable and the NRCC should be targetting this district for a win.
