We are finishing up the handover of security for Iraqi cities to the Iraqi government.

(Via AoSHQ) It has been declared a holiday, and for good reason. They’re getting their country… well, ‘back’ is the wrong word; under the Baathists it was never really ‘theirs’ to begin with. But they do take responsibility for their cities and towns now.

Iraqis Celebrate Day of National Sovereignty Marking US Troop Pullback

Iraqis are staging a national celebration to mark the impending June 30th withdrawal of U.S. troops from most cities, towns and villages. Celebrations in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, include music, dance and poetry.

I think that this is a nicely iconic image:

Congratulations to the Iraqi people on their mission to self governance.

One day soon, we may look to them with longing for our own situation and hold up our purple finger in a plea for solidarity.

In the NBA, late in the game when the contest is well in hand, players are notorious for padding their stats with “garbage points”, assists, rebounds and steals.

Obama came in late in the fourth quarter, but watch for him to take full credit for the win and use this handover to pad his stats.

Democrats have turned this into an unnecessary war…. It will be interesting how Iran factor plays out. Remember Muqtada Al Sadr is still around in Qom (Iran).

This withdrawal is going to get tricky in the coming months and years. I hope there are people in Obama’s Team who can improvise and have a contingency plan. Not just we can go back in… more of constant review and recalibration…
