Yes, the President of the Valley Swim Club is a John G Duesler, Jr.

So you’ve heard about the private Philly swim club that had turned away a bunch of day campers after their first (bought and paid for) visit, allegedly for being, well, minorities.

And you’ve heard the part that has gotten a bunch of people up in arms:

The explanation they got was either dishearteningly honest or poorly worded.

“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

And then you perhaps heard that there’s a John G Duesler, Jr in the area who was a staunch Obama supporter:

…but when you went to look him and the Valley Swim Club up, lo! The entire site has been scrubbed and taken down! There’s now no way to check to see if this is the same person as the one who turned away The Creative Steps Day Camp!  Unless, of course, they forgot to clean out the PDFs from the Google cache.  And unless, of course, you happen to have the FireShot FireFox add-on, thus making a screen capture possible.

Guess what?

Looks like the same John G Duesler, Jr to me. Wonder why the scrubbing?

Moe Lane

PS: For those wondering how an Obama supporter could have problems with minority kids in his pool club, the answer’s actually depressingly simple. The skin color of a President several states away may be safely abstract. The skin color of the child currently splashing in the shallow end of your pool is rather, ah, concrete.  Sad, but true.

Not that I’m alleging that this is the case, here.  But that kind of break between the abstract and the concrete has been known to occur.

That is expected of democrat party and even supporters.

I am used to lectures on racial equality from lefties in Chapel Hill, where the only black people you see play for UNC or are homeless on Franklin Street. Let’s not forget Dr. Howard Dean, who smugly pontificates from a state with a black population of 0.5%.

Yes - concrete versus abstract indeed. Looks like wind farms aren’t the only thing that make lefties cling to the NIMBY rule. Or maybe now it’s the It Ain’t Cool To Come To My Pool Rule.

Q: Where were the last riots over desegregation ?

jimmuy8 Thursday, July 9th at 3:20PM EDT (link)

A: Boston, 1975. Over 20 years after Brown.

Yup, lily-white, sanctimonious liberal stronghold couldn’t stand to have any of the other race associate with their little treasures.

A little fact that needs thrown out every time anyone on the left dares say the South is the racist part of the country.

PS: I’d link to the wiki on ROAR but for the gratuitous swipe at Reagan claiming his election was the culmination of white, working-class racism.

I think up north it's not so much race as it is culture/how people act

mom2oneson Thursday, July 9th at 3:35PM EDT (link)

In the south it’s more race=automatic prejudice if people are like that but up north it’s not so much race as how people act that other people have a problem with. In the south I see a lot of Christian influence and gosh it just doesn’t even compare to up north, peoples characters are way different and it shows in behavior. I could write about 10 diaries about the difference. :D

I made a post here

mom2oneson Thursday, July 9th at 3:49PM EDT (link)

Mom, you're right to an extent

Warrior Thursday, July 9th at 4:18PM EDT (link)

I grew up in the South and have never seen the vicious, hateful bigotry which has been on display in the North only recently. I went to integrated schools for the most part (it hadn’t happened yet when I was in grade school,) had black friends, clients, bosses and neighbors. I haven’t heard a racial remark in twenty years.

Of course, I have known people who have spouted racist hate, but generally, they were folks with serious personal problems in addition to racism. I’ll never forget being asked to join the Klan in the late ’70’s. The little guy making the “offer” was pitiful — dead-end job, poor up-bringing, not much future. Obviously, the Klan represented some way for him obtain a modicum of power and self-respect, regardless of how warped such characteristcs might when obtained in this fashion. Of course, I told him “no.” But I didn’t ridicule him, I only felt sorry for him.

Many people still have a very naive view of the South and Southerners, perpetuated and exacerbated for fun and profit by leftist Hollywood types.

Most Southerners did not own slaves. Most cotton was picked by whites. Most whites were dirt poor. Most sharecroppers were white. And on and on. But you’d never know it watching pointedly demagogic and inflammatory hit pieces like “Mississippi Burning,” “A Time To Kill”and “The Chamber.”

Yes, certainly there are still pockets of racism in the South, but the most virulent racial hate I’ve seen is up Nawth…I guess the difference is, racism is generally not tolerated down here anymore, although it still exists. Unfortunately, it will always exist, everywhere and in people of all races. Our job is simply to not tolerate it — in anyone.

Typical of Philly, believe me.

boomer Thursday, July 9th at 3:32PM EDT (link)

The powers-that-be there and their lawyers will hunt down a drunken 18-year-old in Frankford or SW Philly who scrawls a racial epithet, then go back to Chestnut Hill and drive a storeowner out of business because his sign isn’t tasteful enough for their swank neighborhood. I once got called a racist in the 80’s because I questioned whether we really needed the federal gov’t. to provide lunch for school kids. But don’t misunderstand them– they would have been more than happy to let those kids in their swim club– they just didn’t have PhD’s and a six-figure income.

boomer can you explain that

It’s just so much typical liberalism. You go around laying burdens on other people (prosecuting 18 year olds), just so that you look high-minded. But when it comes to your own personal interests, you’re quite an SOB. The hypocrisy of it galls me. They are all for equality, as long as its other people’s liberties they crush.

See my diary entitled

Warrior Thursday, July 9th at 3:40PM EDT (link)

“Who’s the Racist?”

Recently, because I opposed another ridiculous leftist policy move by the local housing authority, a man I had known for 20 years suddenly called me a racist. Natuarlly, since I was intimately familiar with the details of his life, I wrote a diary about it.

I compared various circumstances of his life to mine in alternating paragraphs without reference to who was whom and challenged readers to guess who the racist was.

The diary was a perfect description and explanation of the Dr. John G. Duesler story. (Maybe someone at RS should promote it.) In any event, the depictions of closet racists with horrible cases of middle-class white guilt, in these cases richly deserved, could not be more salient.

My (former) friend came from an affluent white family, lives in an affluent white suburb, has only affluent white friends, is insufferably liberal, self-righteous and voted for the empty-suited One. The only blacks he ever sees are the poor souls handing over rent money to his slumlord daddy. He stands to inherit the profit farms himself. Naturally, he believes anyone who doesn’t swallow every stupid left-wing policy proposal hook, line and sinker is a racist.

As long as the country club liberals never have to soil their hands with black folks or have them “interfere” in their lives, they’re all for integration. As long as their job isn’t threatened, they’re all for affirmative action. As long as their bank account isn’t taken, they’re all for distribution of the wealth. Yeah, just as long as they remain at the top of the pile, the riff-raff will just have to deal with whatever they believe needs to be done to make them feel good about themselves.

This turkey truly is coming home to roost. The Right Reverend Jeremiah Wright wants YOU for the avenging army of limousine liberals who have decided your heart isn’t clean enough. The empty-suited One is coming for YOUR stuff, so just get ready and quit whining.

(BTW, which way to the swimmin’ hole?)

mom2oneson Thursday, July 9th at 3:57PM EDT (link)

I agree with what you are saying but I don’t know that it applies to this man. We don’t even know what he said for sure. Some of the comments were from parents. We should not deny when you see behaviors from a certain group enough we do associate behaviors with that group like teens and driving would be one example. Also I’ve seen more than once when people cry about their mistreatment after they acted like barbarians.

I finally understood more of that diary you wrote when you explained it above. I had a neighbor exactly like that. I guess that is why ITS SO HARD to debate with them (and many republicans with the same type of attitudes) about how much people can do for themselves because they are so distant from it.

Yes, unfortunately, the "race problem"

Warrior Thursday, July 9th at 4:27PM EDT (link)

has been demagogued to such an extent that one can hardly utter an honest word or common sense approach about it which doesn’t raise cat calls and worse from people of all political stripes with some sort of vested interest in the matter….

And, you’re right, some Repubs actually still DO fit the racist-conservative-white-man stereotype….not near as many as the old MSM would like young, impressionable voters to think, however.

I never knew that stereotype but I know in the last few years when I have spoken up about some statement about the poor, blacks, etc I have been met that type of thing that you are talking about and yes the degrees differ with people. One time someone called me a boot strapper. Another time someone said I don’t understand (the situation of the poor). :D Now some are even very generous too but there is still this thinking that the poor are stupid, helpless etc. Honestly it shocked me that people thought like how they do because I did not know people that thought like that growing up. I often qualify what I say with “to the best of their ability” and I really mean it and there are so many different areas and levels it applies to.

You are right with your diary, it’s really a false thing to say that people are racist because they do not want to give people special treatment they did not earn. People seem to confuse consideration to someone’s situation and instead of having true consideration with common sense and maturity they view people as stupid and helpless. I guess that is easier for people than to have real concern or try to have understanding.

40 years ago I was in the 5th grade

izoneguy Thursday, July 9th at 4:52PM EDT (link)

at a middle school in Maryland. I rode the bus. All the kids in my neighborhood were white. We picked up black kids from all over the countryside. Most of them lived in what were really shacks. These black kids were rude, crude and illiterate. We went to the same classes and had the same teachers. They refused to learn. They mocked the teachers and would walk out of class. It was almost like being in a zoo. They were poor and probably did not even have running water or electricity. But once they were in school they had the same opportunity to sit & listen & learn. If anything they were ruining it for the kids that did want to learn. Not every black kid was like this but it was a majority that was rude & disruptive in the classroom. The teachers were afraid to do anything. On the rides room I was usually spat on, beat up and if I had anything they liked they usually stole it from me. The bus drivers never did anything either. So now you have the thugs in D.C. all grown up doing the same thing to America. We moved to Texas in 1970 and I have never left.

honest word

mom2oneson Thursday, July 9th at 5:07PM EDT (link)

and the thing is, often times those people uttering those words aren’t really racist that they would deny giving help, service, etc based on race, they may even sacrifice money that really goes to help (like private school scholarships, a baseballs teams trip to a higher competition, a trip for a class to go out of state) no matter the race, and it really is behavior they are criticizing but the people so quick to jump on stuff really do have a lot of hate in their hearts.

… Racism still exists in 2009…

There is a story on Drudge right now about a white Ohio family that was assaulted by a gang of black teenagers without provocation.

“It came after a family night of celebrating America and freedom with a fireworks show at Firestone Stadium. Marshall, his family and two friends were gathered outside a friend’s home in South Akron.

Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ”This is our world” and ”This is a black world” as they confronted Marshall and his family.

The story goes on to state how the father was put in a critical care unit for 5 days.

This reminds me of the Black Panther intimidation at the Polls in Philadelphia, how they were shouting, “You’re about to be ruled by a black man!”

The South Akron police are hesitant to call this a hate crime… hmm… can you hear that? That’s the sound of a duck quacking…

It seems the Liberals don’t want them in their backyards as Moe pointed out… and apparently black folks don’t want them in theirs either…

Now who are the racists these days? Hmmm?

“Sometimes the law defends plunder and participates in it. Sometimes the law places the whole apparatus of judges, police, prisons and gendarmes at the service of the plunderers, and treats the victim - when he defends himself - as a criminal.” — Frederic Bastiat

On the eve of the national holiday honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., questions about the nature of peace drew a small but engaged group to the Philadelphia Ethical Society in Rittenhouse Square yesterday.

Harry Thorn (left) listens to Mangaliso Ture’s peace initiatives in a gathering at the Philadelphia Ethical Society. Billed as an ethnic peace festival, it brought together those interested in forging better relations.

One oft-cited example of literary peace-making is the 1931 poem “Conscientious Objector” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, which Duesler recited by heart as the meeting began. Its memorable opening stirred the group: “I shall die, but that is all that I shall do for Death.”

King sought political solutions to discrimination and war, and had he not been assassinated in 1968 at age 39, he likely would have played a pivotal peace-making role in the world for years to come, said Phyllis Gilbert, Peace Action’s executive director.

“Peace-making takes many shapes and forms,” whether political action or even artistic and literary expression, said John G. Duesler Jr., board chairman of Peace Action-Philadelphia, the event’s sponsor. It was billed as an ethnic peace festival.

it was him who initiated the complaint. Apparently there were other members present when the day care folks showed up and it was THEY who complained.

I’m guessing that these kids went a little freaky (as kids who get over excited are wont to do. No matter the color of their skin) and this was deemed indicative of “inner city ‘yout’ behavior” by the grand dames present and they proceeded to evacuate the pool and complain to management. (I can understand their point of view also. Recall the actions in the past at Urban pools in the past at other places around the country. Some pretty raw stuff took place, mostly perpetrated against young females.)
