Male unemployment at 10.5%.

The word of the day is 'Gulp.'

Glenn Reynolds called this graph ’scary’:

…which it is, mostly because of the implications of what the male unemployment rate is going to be when general unemployment hits double-digits; but it’s not scary enough. So I’ve improved it a touch:

…which I think will probably help get the underlying message a bit more attention. Particularly since the measures that we use to measure unemployment now are not the ones that we’ve used in the past. So there may be even a worse situation looming, from a sociological point view; I’m not even remotely one myself, but I do know that one of the basic rules of thumb is having too many young, unemployed males in the population is bad for a society’s stability.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, now would be a really good time to read up on 19th Century European history.

Just a hint.

Hmmmm, I have a beard and I am sitting here

izoneguy Friday, July 10th at 11:18AM EDT (link)

in a bright orange shirt. Should I be worried? I may work a few days next week even if I don’t want too. At least my wife is out working.
I just got a ticket in the mail for running a red light…really just not stopping all the way before turning right. So I was taking my son to the ice cream store per my working wife’s request. Does she pay the icket or do I? Can I use her money to pay for it??

izone, are they saying men not working grow beards and wear bright shirts?

penguin2 Friday, July 10th at 11:46AM EDT (link)

I never knew that.

izone, can you go back and look at your comment on Josh’s diary about Palin and Andrea Mitchell. A little thread developed after your response to me. I responded last night. I felt we were a little taken out of context. But check it out if you get a chance.

On the ticket, pool resources if possible. I’d say ignore it, but that is not a good idea. And the cop could have been a little more lenient about it…

Yes, I went back and looked at that

and I apologized if my comment was taken out of context.
I need to quit splitting the title and the comment like I just did here.

My wife thinks I am paranoid, so I just leave her stuff out in plain site so it get’s taken first.

I wonder if that means I’m one of these unemployed (or, at least, “underemployed”) men too?!

Ah, the joys of summer… :)

SWMBO has a job interview next week

Achance Friday, July 10th at 11:55AM EDT (link)

and I can’t tell you how happy I am! She’s been retired for almost two years now and has only me and the cats to supervise after almost thirty years as a supervisor and managers. I’m doing everything I can to help and encourage her to get that job!

Somewhat more seriously, all you have to do is look at what high male unemployment has done in the black community to see the troubles ahead if these differentials persist.

I have been saying for 15 years or more that men had better start getting into so-called female jobs lest they have permanent “mancessions”….column to follow soon….

Mike that is what I think too

A lot of traditionally women’s jobs are not hit so hard by recessions.

exactly - technology has depressed the demand for men's

relative physical strength advantage

and jobs that have a lot of women doing them

mom2oneson Friday, July 10th at 2:30PM EDT (link)

A lot of women already work part time or two part time or less than full time so they don’t get cut first or they work on contract or as needed.
Jobs in healthcare will always be and education is funded by the gov.
There is more and more subsidized daycare now so there women don’t have to account the cost for childcare to work a low paying job part time. A lot of women didn’t work before because it wouldn’t be worth it but now there is extremely inexpensive daycare due to the gov paying for part of it. So that increases the workforce for lower paying jobs and there are less lower paying jobs empty for men to pick up in times like this.
More subsidized daycare, universal preschool, expanding special education and tutoring funds from like NCLB means more childcare/education jobs too because more of a demand.
This is not meant to debase GOOD MEN there are A LOT of men that will work low paying jobs to make it, but I see it more with women through the years they seem to accept something low paying/menial to get by. Now I see some of those sams men’s attitudes changing that before would just go on about that job not being enough it’s kind of weird how they change but for years I saw that mostly in women that would just do whatever to keep their rent paid. So I think a lot of women have those jobs now that a lot of men would never work before.
The baby boomers are getting older and there is more health care needs especially with lower skilled health care like sitters, home health aides and nursing assistant that primarily women work.
That is a good point about automation too.. I wasn’t thinking about that. I was thinking like men seem to have careers in non human service type of fields that get cut quicker than human service stuff.

also men

mom2oneson Friday, July 10th at 2:39PM EDT (link)

don’t seem to get hired for clerical jobs. I have no idea what the reason is for that.

Young, unemployed and unmarried males

jimmuy8 Friday, July 10th at 12:06PM EDT (link)

That’s the cocktail for trouble.

Young and unemployed can be trouble but, it’s when they have no wife that they get explosive.

With bartender Barack at the Congressional Bar mixing up another round of unemployment and liberally pouring it over 30+ years of government and court hostility toward traditional male roles . . . .

Well now: Drink up!

Aren't men usually hit harder than women in a recession

mom2oneson Friday, July 10th at 1:20PM EDT (link)

because jobs that a lot of females have like part time jobs with no benefit jobs, supportive clerical work, healthcare, childcare, education are more recession proof.

my job's not going anywhere

Darin_H Friday, July 10th at 1:29PM EDT (link)

then again, my job is my 5 month old son :) Thankfully my wife’s industry is VERY recession proof - unless people stop wiping their backsides.

itrytobenice Friday, July 10th at 11:08PM EDT (link)

Or is this a rhetorical question?

The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Not more prone to it nessicarily...

This is only vaguely related

Finrod Friday, July 10th at 1:37PM EDT (link)

I’m reminded of a theory I came up with as to why there are so many young radicalized males in the Middle East. In addition to high unemployment in the Middle East, young males also suffer from a lack of any sexual outlets:

Masturbation is forbidden in Islam
Homosexuality is forbidden in Islam
Polygamy, however, is allowed in Islam

This makes for a large number of unemployed males that can’t find a woman (because they’d rather be the 3rd or 4th wife of someone that’s successful), and aren’t allowed any other sexual outlet. This frustration thus gets channeled against other targets.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it takes the bandwidth of ten thousand.

Finrod

mom2oneson Friday, July 10th at 1:49PM EDT (link)

What does men having relations have to do with violence? If anything I think the married ones would have more stress because of the responsibility of supporting a wife, girlfriend, kids and being unemployed.

People often take out frustrations using violence

Finrod Friday, July 10th at 1:59PM EDT (link)

And there ain’t no frustration like sexual frustration.

DRW Friday, July 10th at 6:18PM EDT (link)

I don’t think it’s just the general “frustration” - remember the classic 72 virgins after martyrdom? If you don’t have a chance to find a woman/reproduce in this life but someone has given a sliver of hope that if you follow them, you will in the next life…

I'm no sociologist

itrytobenice Friday, July 10th at 11:13PM EDT (link)

Thank God, but in my experience, keeping hubby well bred keeps all kinds of tempers and frustrations at bay. I don’t really understand how it all works, but the phrase pu$$y-whipped was accepted into the lexicon for a reason. They just do better that way.

I think it was Robin Williams who said that men are born with two heads but only enough blood to run one at a time. So keep the South one shrunken and empty. It lets the blood flow to the North one.

In my non-sociologist/psychologist opinion. And you can assume this is all theoretical so you don’t have to wonder if you just got TMI.

The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

It depends, ITBN;

Achance Saturday, July 11th at 12:00AM EDT (link)

a man can live quite comfortaby with complete, that is capital letter complete, celibacy, quite comfortably. That means no sex, no masturbation, no dirty movies, no fantasies, no bad thoughts, and you can actually do it if you really want to.

I quite literally sentenced myself to celibacy at one point in my life because I had gotten completely out of control; if a woman would let me, I would, and it was putting my marriage, my job, and my reputation at serious risk. I have one of those Alpha-male addictive personalities and half measures will not do for me. If some is good, lots is better, and I cannot satisfy myself with “some.”

The only thing that has solved, somewhat, that for me is getting old enough that the right head is more often in control. I’ve actually had some pretty good arguments with SWMBO about this; she’s graphic evidence that women find their favorite position about the same time men find their favorite chair. I just told her flat out that I was tired of being led around by Mr. Happy and this was simply the way it was.

So, for some of us no woman can really PW us for long, maybe six weeks outside, so it has to be a matter of discipline and will. I’ve lived long enough to learn that something that makes me breath hard isn’t necessarily the predicate of a life relationship. Until you learn that, it is pretty much all or nothing.

going to war with china in the next 10 years.

“An official estimate says that, by 2020, there may be 30 million men of marriageable age who will not be able to find a wife. ”

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6346931.stm

30 million men with no wives, no families. China will have to thin out there male population with a war, maybe time to take back Taiwan.
