[Another UPDATE]: Yeah, yeah, yeah: I mucked the name up thoroughly. Sue me.
I say ‘curse it’ because if McDonnell had been just one point lower the title could have been
McDonnell/Deeds: 54/40, no fight.
Anyway, more details here (via @PatrickRuffini). August should prove interesting…

I question the sample of this poll...
eliminatedebt Wednesday, July 29th at 4:06PM EDT (link)Obama won Virginia 53 to 47
The sample of this poll voted for McCain 52 to 43….
This isn’t a good sample of likely voters. Or perhaps proof you can’t indicate a likely voter 3 months ahead of time.

IJB Wednesday, July 29th at 4:53PM EDT (link)I wouldn’t put much stock in this poll.
I can actually believe that McDonnell (and the rest of the GOP ticket) are ahead.
But I *don’t* believe they’re ahead by 15%…
I regret nothing.

Menlo (Diary) Thursday, July 30th at 12:59AM EDT (link)I find it hard to believe even 80 percent of the same people who voted in an election like that of 2008 will turn out to vote in this one a year later.
Does it not make sense to you that disproportionately more Obama voters, especially younger voters who don’t care much about current events (or historical ones for that matter), were not and will not be regular and reliable voters?

penguin2 (Diary) Wednesday, July 29th at 6:04PM EDT (link)good is going on. For one thing, the Obama coattails will not be doing much for this race come November. There is some “buyer’s remorse,” an awareness of the damage that the 2008 election has wrought, and the Republicans will have strong reasons for turning out.
The Dem incumbent is Tim Kaine, he is not around much and I don’t think has had a stellar term.
Bob McDonnell is well known in the southeastern (Tidewater area) and Northern Virginia. Deeds has more of the western part of the state. I don’t know Deeds, but I do know Bob McDonnell and he is highly thought of by many in this state, including conservatives. He is one.

54 40 or fight 1844 campaign slogan
MAGUY Wednesday, July 29th at 9:42PM EDT (link)from Google
During his tenure, US President James K. Polk oversaw the greatest expansion in the size of the United States to date. Polk accomplished this through the annexation of Texas in 1845, the negotiation of the Oregon Treaty with Great Britain in 1846, and the conclusion of the Mexican-American War in 1848. From 1818 until 1846, the Oregon Country was under “Joint Occupancy” by both Great Britain and the United States, which was scheduled for renewal in 1847. In 1844, James K. Polk was elected president with the slogan “54’40 or fight!” This slogan also showed the British that the United States was prepared for war if they did not turn over all of Oregon. “Fifty-four forty or fight” would have included all of present-day British Columbia, up to the tip of Alaska, or “Russian America.” Polk appealed to Americans’ “just and dear territorial rights, their own self-respect, and their national honor
Creigh Deeds is doing what Libs do best
Scope (Diary) Thursday, July 30th at 6:20AM EDT (link)He has gone way far to the middle on his positions. That is how we got so many Libs in Congress, and O in the WH. They campaign in the middle, and then turn left when in office. Deeds has even said he is for drilling off VA coast for oil and gas! What Democrat is for drilling anywhere? He knew that was one of McDonnells most winning ideas.
I agree with Penguin, in that he doesn’t have Obama on the ticket to bring out all the idiot voters, and, Tim Kaine is not a popular or well liked Governor with VA residents. In Kaines first 2 years as Gov. everyone complained that he was a do nothing. I only wish he would have stayed that way. And yes, lots of buyer’s remorse going around these days. Obama’s poll numbers are heading south, and, by November hopefully they will be at the water line, just waiting for the flush.

Virginia is population heavy with military and Deeds voted AGAINST giving spouses and dependents the same voting status as other Virginians.
Danielle Davis (ocleverone) (Diary) Thursday, July 30th at 8:15AM EDT (link)Sorry that title is so long but Deeds was one of the two Dems in the Senate to vote against giving military spouses/dependents the same voting rights as regular Virginia citizens. I will bring this issue up every time I see Deeds name anywhere. His position of “middle” is a sham.
Here is the bill that changed the election law (antiquated) to allow military dependents the same rights. Prior to this, one must have been able to swear that they would live in VA for an unlimited amount of time in order to be eligible to register to vote in VA. – It was being applied to military spouses only in one county. Deeds was one of only two that opposed giving the same status to military spouses/dependents.

I will work myself to exhaustion to make sure this man doesn’t get elected. One of the good things is that Bob McDonnell is such a great choice, it makes the work palatable and easier to do.

Ken Cuccinelli for Atty General
Scope (Diary) Thursday, July 30th at 9:24AM EDT (link)It is as critical to support Cuccinelli as it is to work for and support McDonnell. Cuccinelli will make VA Voting Law reform (I am getting to hate that word) as important as his position on State Soverienty.
Virgil Goode was on local talk radio a few days ago. Without spelling it out, he said that he decided not to run against Perriello again in 2010, because he doesn’t feel hopeful for VA Republicans in that election, because nothing has changed with VA voting laws. There is little doubt that because of ACORNS practices and involvement in the 2008 election, there were votes “found” after election day that made Perriello the winner. The 2 most populated areas in the 5th district are Richmond and Charlottesville, both heavily Democrat. Those 2 cities also are the homes of major colleges and universities, such as UVA in Cville. I heard this morning that ACORN had a website to encourage out of state college students, faculty and others living in areas temporarily to “shop their vote.” In other words, if the Democrat running in their home state had a sizeable lead, they then should vote in their temporary state for the D that needed their vote more. There was also many names of VA registered voters which were also found on the voters lists in other states. There is no doubt that some voted by absentee ballot in their home state, and then went to the polls on election day here, and voted again. Nothing was done about that at all. I don’t blame Virgil for not wanting to go through that again.
