RS

FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Hmm. Meet Mike Halfacre (R Cand, NJ-12).

(H/T: Instapundit) This one is speculative: while NJ-12 is only D+5, its incumbent is Rush Holt, who has held the seat for ten years now, with election margins in the 60s. On the other hand, that’s also enough time to get sloppy; he’s a good bit more liberal than you’d expect from somebody in a D+5 seat; and if this report is correct he’s not handling well being on the other side from actual populists.

So… here’s Mike Halfacre. Mayor of Fair Haven, running on fiscal responsibility (has lowered property taxes and reduced debt as Mayor), frankly looks better than Holt did with regard to access at Holt’s own town hall. This isn’t my old district when I was living in NJ, but I know the area: it’s not infertile ground for Republicans. The fact that he’s pro-choice will be a deal-breaker for some people reading this, which is of course their privilege.

If it’s not a deal-breaker, keep an eye on this one. It may prove interesting.

I have no problem with an R with a few liberal positions in a D+5 district. The problam is with all of the moderate R’s in solid conservative districts or Senate seats. Recently there has been a lot of talk about challenging Sen. Bennet in Utah. This is as solid of a state as we have in the union and it should produce 2 Coburns or DeMint’s, not Hatch and Bennett. NJ is another story.

Thanks for writing on this Moe. I live in Fair Haven, and can’t really tell you the great job that Mike has been doing since elected mayor. Everything from Property taxes going down, to the placement of a celltower (a tower which was forced upon the town) to the consolidation of emergency services with neighboring communities. And as someone that attended the Rush Holt townhall and even had my question read (He said the numbers i provided “Just weren’t true” even though they came from a Price Waterhouse Coopers report on healthcare). The one thing that Mike Halfacre actually does is listen to the people he represents. Every solution that the town of Fair Haven has instituted has come from the people of the town. And just because it’s a D+5 district in a D State, doesn’t mean it can’t be done. It’s just going to be hard. Iif the people in the district get to know who both Halfacre and Holt really are, it can be done.
    Thanks again Moe
