Massachusetts succession crisis!

Alarmingly, House Kennedy lacks a suitable heir to the vacant Senate seat!  The last real possibility declined to be elevated to the position:

BOSTON – Joseph P. Kennedy II’s decision not to seek the U.S. Senate seat long held by his late uncle, Edward M. Kennedy, has touched off a succession scramble.

(H/T: Hot Air) For those keeping track: this is the Kennedy that makes six figures running a nonprofit organization and who cozies up to Hugo Chavez.  He’s not the anti-science Kennedy with the crazy beliefs on autism; and he’s not the Kennedy with the drunk driving problem… to be more specific, he’s not the Kennedy currently in Congress with the drunk driving problem.  He’s not even the Kennedy that had the songSweet Caroline” written for her; which is a shame, because as near as I can tell that’s the most useful thing that any of the younger generations of Kennedy aristos have been associated with in my lifetime.

At any rate, the people of Massachusetts are giving serious consideration to having something called an ‘election’ for the Senate seat: no word yet whether the eventual winner will have to change his or her name to Kennedy afterward.

PS: Today, John Kerry woke up, went to the bathroom mirror, and murmured “Senior Senator from Massachusetts” to his reflection.  This has become part of the little ritual of the morning for him, and helps counter the mental vertigo that comes from going through one’s days without never quite being certain what one should be doing next.

…in anguish, after seeing what has become of his beloved state. Once a shining beacon of individual freedom and liberty, it is now nothing more than a pale gray immitation of a sovereign state.

that a current rep, who is even to the left of Ted Kennedy, will be the next Senator. His name is Edward Markey, of the 7th district. The same Ed Markey who hates anything with the word “nuclear”.

Andy Card may be our best shot here, if he decides to run.

    winning that Senate seat?

  • The_Rebel

if a Republican takes that seat it will create the biggest political earthquake this country has seen in decades.

As I understand it, Republicans can’t run, just Ds and Is. Curt Schilling of the Red Sox has been joking about a run… he campaigned for McCain but couldn’t run as an R.

  • Castor

    If Curt Schilling is willing,
Off Cape Cod some offshore drilling !

won it from Henry Cabot Lodge, except for the short interregnum following JFK’s election as president.

    Only in America!

Who knows where that may lead, perhaps to democratic representation for the public..

I read this as “Massachusetts Secession Crisis” and thought our troubles were soon to be over.

Massachusetts having Kerry as a senior Senator is like having Sylvester the cat as your dad. I wonder exactly how Massachusetts functions as a state. But I’m sure before all this is over, we’ll see a good number of the citizens wearing paper bag hats and saying,

    “Oh, Kerry…”

    A well-adjusted one, to be sure. :)

Fmr Lt Gov Healey is not running

Andy Card, State Senator Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, is reported to be entering the race, and former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and former governor Jane Swift also could run.Another Democratic name that has been mentioned as a possible contender: Former US attorney Michael Sullivan is also rumored to possibly be running.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-South Boston, and Attorney General Martha Coakley pulled nomination papers late last week. Today, Congressman Capuano announced his intentions to run and Fmr Congressman Meehan said he would not run. Another Democratic name that has been mentioned as a possible contender: US Representative Edward J. Markey.

in MA you have to be registered to R or D to run in their primary a certain ammount of days prior to an election. In this case he could not run as Republican but could do so as Independent.

Wealthy Republican businessman Christy Mihos, who is currently a candidate for governor, will switch to the Senate race this week and spend at least ten million dollars of his own money, a spokesman said.

Mihos “intends to switch over to the Senate race within the next 24 hours,” said spokesman Kevin Sowyrda, who added no well-funded, credible Republican has been willing to step up to run so far.

    Although Mitt Romney made Governor.

I am glad that Joseph P. Kennedy II took a pass: he’s been making too much money delivering Venezuelan oil:

Smith also defended the program?s ad budget as appropriate for the size of the program. And he defended Kennedy?s salary – $545,000 in 2007, according to tax documents … Kennedy and his late brother, Michael, who ran the organization while Kennedy was serving in Congress, shuffled and reshuffled the deck of its for-profit, and nonprofit, activities several times.”

It would be interesting if Barney Frank ran, but he’s too happy being senior Representative. Even a squeaky-clean Republican would have trouble winning this seat.

What crisis??? You mean they’re not going to do it???

  • 1stRichard

To do that there would have to be a GOP base, town and city comities that function for the GOP and grassroots values. What I am hearing is the typical disturbing rumors, they want a runoff for Fleitman and Sholley because they are too conservative and stuff in some liberal. We have Gerry Dembrowski for Governor that actually carries one of those pocket constitutions but is largely marginalized within the GOP here. From corruption comes corruption but that is based on my conservative beliefs and from someone sick of holding my nose to pick the lesser of two evils. And the top reason why the GOP has little chance here, you can?t tell the difference too often. I think you should be careful what you wish for.

sometimes I wish the NYTimes would just give you a shot at an OP-ed piece like they did for Colbert…

Seems far too many people want some sort of government control, so the vote for those who will impose government control. Mass. has been in the thrall of liberal policies for decades & its highly unlikely anyone who represents them will do anything other than, impose more government control.
Some seem to think people in government are good guys who will always do what is best for the people.
Yet we have so many examples, on BOTH sides of the aisle, of politicians whose actions are nothing short of criminal. Government run does not mean better it means, government run. It means, they decide & you pay for it while obeying whatever the government bureaucrat tells you to do.
We can find another free market supplier of what we want. We can sue free market companies for their failures or criminal actions.
Ever try to sue the government? Didn’t think so!
