FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Joe Wilson: sorry if you were offended when I called the President a liar.

Having caused a bit of a ruckus last night of a sort unmatched in incivility and depravity since… 2005, when Democrats booed the President at his State of the Union address… Representative Joe Wilson (R, SC) wants you to know that he is very sorry if any one was offended that he pointed out that the President is a liar:

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”

Notice that he didn’t say anything about a lack of accuracy – then again, as Legal Insurrection notes, this would be because Joe Wilson was being accurate when he called the President a liar: HR 3200 covers illegal immigrants, and every attempt to make it explicit that it wouldn’t has been blocked by Congressional Democrats.  No, it’s just that Joe Wilson recognizes that it was mean of him to wreck the President’s narrative that way by calling the President a liar.  And it was mean of him: as we saw last night, President Obama isn’t exactly what you’d call quick on his rhetorical feet when things don’t go his way.

As you might have guessed, I’m amused at the outrage shown to Joe Wilson‘s calling the President a liar by the professionally outraged: not only because it’s fairly provincial of them*, but because the outrage fairly clearly covers a certain uneasiness.  This is new for Republicans and conservatives, you see.  We don’t march.  We don’t gather for protests.  We don’t gather for protests in large numbers.  We don’t take time off to go to protests.  We don’t force the opposition to react to what we say.  We don’t interrupt.  We don’t push back when pushed.  And we don’t loudly call out people for their lies when they lie.  At least, we didn’t do all of that, on a regular basis – but we’re doing it now.  Change!

And Hope, too.

… He has NOTHING to apologize for. I think he showed incredible testicular fortitude in calling it immediately like he saw it.

And not to mince words… The President, was lying through his pearly whites.. Native Americans used to call that “speaking with a forked tongue”…

Anyone who shakes hands with this President, better count their fingers after the exchange.

    1. Call Joe Wilson and tell him he was right. 202-225-2452.

    2. Call John Boehner and tell him he should support Rep Wilson’s comment publicly. 202-225-6205.

Considering how much the President and Democrat majority in Congress are looking to rape the American taxpayer, who’s really be “uncivil”?

  • tampatraveler

Joe Wilson’s outburst was indeed inappropriate solely because of where it took place. Don?t forget – - just before this occurred Barack Obama called Sara Palin a “Liar” (Death Panel Comment). True to form, John McCain ducked back into the alley and allowed his selected VP running mate to be verbally assaulted. Where is the man?s decency? John McCain is such a disappointment – - He sadly is in self glorification and political preservation mode! What a shame!!

    Mr. President,

I don’t beleive the talk that you’re a bald-faced liar on the issue of public funding for abortion and coverage of illegal aliens in the health bill before the House. If I may be so bold, I’d like to offer some advice on putting this controversy behind us:

Perhaps instead of simply accusing your opponents of misrepresentation, which is the rhetorical equivalent of “Nuh-Uhh!”, maybe you should simply point out the page and paragraph where these are specifically excluded. This seems like a fairly simple way to end the debate.

And, please, sir, until you can provide such information, I would respectfully suggest that you STFU on this matter.

    Sincerely,

    Next93

No apologies necessary from Joe. Maybe they all should have stood up and turned their backs to him instead.

Civility is exactly what radical leftist activists expect when THEY are speaking.

Just a minute dose of their own medicine brings on their cries of foul.

    Bravo to Joe!!!!

  • penguin2

than anyone at any point in that room, including the president. In fact, there were probably many in that room who were thinking the same thing. Every Republican should have been.

We follow the “rules” of civility and they continue to demean and show us disrespect. The left uses our own lack of speaking out as a weapon against us. They will continue to do so as long as we remain a rug on the floor, waiting for them to walk on it.

  • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

Especially considering he couched in terms of the emotional. The Democrats like to bill us as unemotional and uncaring.

Obama was lying through that whole speech. He called people liars throughout it. He can do that but Wilson has to apologize for stating the truth? And threatening people to call people out for not supporting it? He played every card in his deck and was nothing but offensive, but that’s okay. He’s a Democrat.

And now, he has to make a follow-up speech? If this is the future of American politics, I’m glad I’m going deaf. As one of my friends said: “He sounds better on mute.”

  • banzaibob

reports that one of his potential Democrat opponents has received about 100,000 dollars in campaign contributions. I think it’s time to show our support.

  • chc57802

Thank you Joe Wilson! I know you’re going to take some heat for this but I for one will stand up and say Thank You! If more House and Senate members would stand up and call the liars out, we wouldn’t be in this mess today (but then again, you wouldn’t have time to do anything else).
Where do I send my check for your re-election campain?

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

The outburst was true; and the apology was useful in disrupting the intended narrative by the WH and the media. Not to mention the alternate intended narrative, which would probably have been push back on THAT WOMAN.

  • RedBeard

Wilson called the liar a liar, and apologized, while the liar continued to lie and would not apologize for his lies. Is that about it?

Civility is usually something I strongly support, but things have changed a bit since this scurvy crew of dedicated and devious leftists took over the White House. We’re in nothing short of a war to save our republic. Civility be damned. Cheers to Joe Wilson.

  • louisiana
  • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

but the Democrats don’t accept apologies. Instead, it was done and we’re supposed to be perfect or suffer for the consequences. The apology will be forgotten but the outburst never will be. He will have a target on his back from now until 2010 and if he escapes their knives between now and then, it will stay as long as the liberals have a voice.

We are not all equal in the eyes of liberals. Some of us are less. Actually all of us are less without a victim narrative to make us “equal.”

As for THAT WOMAN, there’s no cover for her. Even if every Republican in the chamber had stood up and walked out, including McCain, it would have done little to change the narrative on THAT WOMAN. Considering she quit, I find it interesting that she is deemed so big a threat when so many experts say that she is dead politically and stupid to boot.

  • beanerecmo

and those Republicants (sic) who took such umbrage at Wilson’d remark. Obama was disrespectful to the American people by continuing his lies. Besides, isn’t he the one who said if mischaracterization of the healthcare debate is made we’ll call you out – well, he was called out. Breach of protocol; Obama breached protocol by lying to the American people without interruption. )And, Mccain calling on Wilson to apologize; everytime I hear McCain speak, I wonder how he could have been the Republicants candidate – of course the cross-over primary voting by the dems helped a heckava lot, too.) How will illegals not be covered when there is no provision in any of the bills for ascertaining citizenship or valid visas? The only good thing single payer will do is do away with medical malpractice suits, because the patients and medical practitioners will be under the government’s thumb, because the government medical panel will be in charge of determining the ‘proper course of treatment’, and the government cannot be sued unless the government approves the suit. This will be the civilian version of the military’s Ferris Doctrine. I do not disrespect the president; because I have no respect for the fascist social welfare collectivist and his willing, lack of knowledge (ignorant) minions, because they have no respect for the majority of Americans or their opinions.

  • irishgirl

I was wondering on the way to work how to show Joe Wilson support. Thanks. And who can blame him? He’s only human regardless of protocol. I say “good for him!”

  • Praying

I’ve been referring to Obama as the “emperor not wearing any clothes” for months now, and hoping and praying that SOMEone would have the guts to stand up and publicly declare what is so inherently obvious to the majority of Americans. Perhaps out of respect for the office (totally undeserved) or fear of the obligatory “RACIST” label that will be assigned anyone who dares oppose the one, no one has dared to speak up to this point. Thank you Joe Wilson. No need to apologize – one apologizes for lying (ahem, Mr. President) NOT for telling the truth!! Sometimes, the truth hurts. Tough love. Get over it. No, clearly, the emperor is wearing no clothes, and those that insist he is are looking more foolish my the minute.

  • GT350

It was rude, but hey, that’s hardball politics. The Pres promised to call out people who spoke mistruths, then got called out himself. Ironic.

It will be interesting how this affects the dynamic. Repub voters, by and large, probably agree with the sentiment, if not the delivery of the outburst. Dems will be offended by the disruption, and will be hardened. I really wonder how the Moderates will take it.

In any case, it disrupted the intended dynamic of the speech. Just like Obama’s “racist cop” comment, this soundbite will be bounced around for weeks, but the content of his speech is already forgotten.

  • txaggies911

From the language of HR 3200:

SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.

Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.

  • bk

The President is talking about expanding coverage to 47M uninsured, 10M of which are illegal aliens. If he said we need to cover 37M uninsured people then it would be a different story.

BTW I don’t think he should have done it even though Obama lied repeatedly.

  • jburr

If you were going into battle who would you want in the foxhole with you? Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the gang or Joe Wilson?

Personally I am pleased to finally see someone on the right actually stand up and say something rather than respectfully being quiet while lies are tossed around like peanuts at Fenway. Our elected officials were elected to represent our views, not to be doormats for the Messiah. Maybe his little outburst will provide some backbone that elected members on the right have lacked for so long.

As Evander Holyfield said, “Everyone has a game plan until they are hit in the mouth!” It is my hope that our representatives will finally get in the ring and start to hit Obama in the mouth. Then maybe we will see what happens when the teleprompter goes down.

  • banzaibob

Do you think that will stop them from showing up at the emergency rooms and getting care. The Hospital will not be able to ask for their ID and they will get their care free of charge.

How long do you think it will be before a court decides it is unconstitutional to prevent them from getting health care or a state like California which will ignore the law.

  • http://www.ufcle.com/willis/willis.htm Steven Willis

    1. Where does the bill provide for enforcement of this provision, or any consequences?
    2. While the quoted provision does not “allow” the expenditures, nothing “forbids” them. This is a common statutory ploy. Just because it is not explicitly authorized does not mean it is forbidden and cannot fit within some other provision.
    3. This speaks to “affordability credits.” What about other expenditures. Show us where federal money cannot be used directly or indirectly for care provided to persons not lawfully in the U.S.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

Is that clear? We don’t have time for people who don’t show that elementary courtesy.

Obamacare won’t cover illegal immigrants? Yes it will, says Congressional Research Service

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Obamacare-wont-cover-illegal-immigrants–55021087.html

  • RedBeard

…there is deliberately no provision in the bill to find out if anyone is illegal, thereby covering illegals while they claim it will not. Wink wink-nudge nudge.

  • 2ndammendmentmother

I’m having trouble faulting Wilson. Someone needs to call Obama out and force him to acknowledge the facts publicly. Why does he get to stand on the podium and call Conservatives liars, but no one can call him one?

As for Decorum, wasn’t it the Dems who thought it was cute to procure seats for members of Code Pink during Bush’s speeches, knowing full well they were going to disrupt the event?

  • minncon

With reports that his opponent raised $11,000 immediately following his ballsy heckle, it’s important he has not only our moral support but FINANCIAL help as well. Go to www.joewilsonforcongress.com and give the guy $5, $10, $20 or more. It’s the cost of one drive-thru lunch at McDonald’s… but it’s healthier (for you AND America)!

(This same thing happened to Michelle Bachmann’s campaign in Minnesota after she spoke truth to the media… Dems poured donations into her opponent’s campaign. Only financial help from her supporters saved the day and re-elected her.)

  • bk

for too much spending, debts, deficits, earmarks, prokbarrel spending, etc.

So Obama’s sweet-talk didn’t seem to win him over.

Hey it won’t come out of this gov’t bucket, it’ll be covered by some other one instead.

It’ s kind of like how state lotteries are pushed as funding education, and then once it’s approved the allocations of everything else change to shift money away from education since it’s getting lottery money.

  • yoyo

I live in SC, however not in Joe’s district.

He did EXACTLY what I did all throughout the speech last night. Should I apologize also?

You know what, I can take his apology, verbatim, and it would apply to me. I think I will send my “apology” for my “lack of civility” to the One, too. Just use Joe’s.

BTW, the look on Nancy’s face was PRICELESS! It broke the hold that Botox has on her face! It must have taken all the indignant rage that thing could muster to have made her brow furrow like that!

  • konstantine

And here I thought it was Barack Obamas’ fault for the words that came out of his mouth. Of course, it’s McCain. It’s so obvious, that McCain is responsible for what Obama says. That crusty old coot should have gotten up and hurled his old man cane at Obama when he assaulted Palin.

  • JustLeaveMeAlone

    Dear Leader lied?????

    Shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

  • The_Gadfly

Those are all McCain’s cast in stone, just hit ctrl-v to paste the pre-recorded spiel points. Did he specifically call out the President accusing his running mate of lying to the public? Because if not, change the name but quote Brett’s last movie line to Scarlett for me.

  • smitch61

While not appropriate perhaps…. It is the truth..

  • The_Gadfly

the House committee would not have made multiple party line votes excluding language that would provide for the enforcement of those provisions. Glen Beck’s been putting a lot of mantras in his shows, and in this instance “you need to watch what they do, not what they say” is entirely appropriate. Or if you prefer an older quote from a now universally* admired President, “trust but verify.”

*well, now that he’s safely dead and all, and the left can try to recast him as one their heroes.

  • johnt

Wilson for President. He forgot you’re supposed to go along with the charade and not say what everybody knows.
It seems some Repubs want to chastise him as well, jellyfish !

  • Jackal4444

I was disappointed in Rep Wilson’s outburst last night — though honest, it was a breach of the vey civility we need to recover if we are to put this county back together. Right sentiment — wrong setting.

That said, my respect for Rep Wilson has increased esponentially as a result of his apology. Contrary to title of this post, his apolgy did not utilize the standard Washington non-apology “Sorry if anyone was offended” formula most recently employed by Van Jones — he honestly and forthrightly admitted his error, and his regret. As a result, I’m heading over to his campaign site to make my contribution right now, and encourage all others who feel the same way to join me — he is precisely the type of representative we need in Congress.

  • The_Gadfly

If you or any of your staff should happen to read the comments on Moe’s post, may I suggest you study some tapes of the British “Questions for the Prime Minster.” I believe it would help you discern ways in which you can make the procedurally required apology without apologizing for the actual content of the remark that necessitated the apology. Your comment, whether an emotional outburst or not, was in my estimation, entirely the correct one as it was, how is it they say on the other side of the aisle, oh yes, ‘speaking truth to power.’ While it is true that there is a minimum level of civility which must be maintained in order for the work of governing to take place, I personally find the most uncivil behavior exhibited by politicians and lobbyists is the behavior of lying about the facts of a given situation. Those who do must be held accountable so that we may once again establish civility in our places of public discourse.

  • aesthete

Though he was right, and I’m not “outraged” by the outburst, I do think that there are more appropriate venues for such things than when the President is speaking (even if said President is, in fact, a liar). That he apologized for his behavior, and not for being wrong, made it an apology that I can get behind, as he was absolutely correct in his sentiment, even if his expression of said sentiment was unpolished.

This is the United States; after that clear conclusion, our country should not involve itself in the political horse@!#% of other countries as the author demonstrates with the added link. We are the leader in the world and must be the beacon of light in which the world can follow. We cannot continue as a beacon of hope for the world if we cannot talk about healthcare, torture, or anything without the civility of being a responsible human. The fact that this article doesn?t condemn that outburst is a joke and continues to disregard the commonality that we as Americans should share. Now, if you disagree with the president that?s fine, there are plenty of people who do, but to go call the president a liar is bull@#$%. He is the president of the United States; you do not disrespect that office plain and simple. There is a difference between a lie and a disagreement; one involves reason, civility and facts. Now that ?lie? pertaining to illegal immigrants, well it turns out isn?t a lie, please read the healthcare bill, in nowhere does it say that any non-citizens will get any kind of care. There are more important things to talk about like, the cost; the size of government; the eventual decrease in private insurers and the effect that it would have on jobs, the economics of private companies (that are legally bounded by law to make as much money as possible) having to compete with a government entity that doesn?t have to deal with shareholders; taxes; or even just the general opposition of democrats. Stop bickering like children its pathetic and lead the way.

P.S. Everything I have said are based upon facts, no one can argue with facts, but you may argue with my beliefs.

You can claim that you are preaching facts all you want, I can call a horse a dog but guess what it is still a horse. Being civil and treating liberals like we would like to be treated is the exact reason that conservatives are in the position that we are in. I would go through all of the examples of you and those who hold similar beliefs hypocrisy on this matter but I would run out of space and don’t frankly want to waste my time. This is another example of the liberal mantra, “Do as I say not as I do” Since when have liberals ever done anything to alienate illegals, why would you start now by refusing them healthcare? Track record speaks alot and your side of the isle, my friend, can not hide your past and future intentions. The only difference now is that we are calling you on it. If you don’t like it come up with some better arguments.

and I mean that. Obama IS a liar. Too damned bad if the Daily Kos and MoveOn are offended by somebody having the cajones to say it in public. It SHOULD be shouted, and often, and by Republicans at every opportunity.

Every time Obama opens his mouth he issues a stream of s–t that even an IBS patient on laxatives would find improbable, were the evidence not right in front of him. And we need to keep pointing it out.

Screw civility. We don’t get any from them; so why do they think we owe them any? Stop saying “I’m sorry.”

  • azred

The “fact” that non-citizens will not be covered is a blind assumption based on weak cover in the bill. With purposeful exclusion of any language to enforce this clause, it is nothing but a blatant cover to refute the reality that non-citizens will indeed be covered.
And when the president calls all of those that oppose him liars, contrary to the fact, then he has invited the reciprocal treatment. When the president claims the liars will be called out, his words have just been carried out.

Your ‘facts’ are absent of reality.

  • conservative_faction

So what? I am also tired of needless apologies being handed out where they aren’t warranted. Joe Wilson was right to call out the TOTUS as the liar that he is and wrong to apologize for it at the behest of the softies in the GOP.

I’m tired of playing nice-nice with the left as if it would ever help our cause. John McCain proved that being a nice guy when it comes to the left nets you zero election wins.

Joe Wilson will make a little campaign cash off of this episode and that is good. I will donate to his campaign as well because I think that he is a stand up guy for conservatism. In the end, I don’t think that he will need it because I believe that the true conservatives will roll through the November 2010 elections with impressive wins.

The left will gain a little steam from this episode. It will be short-lived though as the new will wear off of the TOTUS’ little campaign performance and all that will be left in the end are the perpetual lies and overused democrat campaign talking points that we keep hearing and have already seen debunked. The democratic party is the party of lies and deceit. Nothing new there now or evermore.

Being civil and treating liberals like we would like to be treated is the exact reason that conservatives are in the position that we are in.

No, the problem isn’t our being civil. It’s that we haven’t been demanding that THEY be civil. Obama threatening to “call people out” is EXACTLY what we should have been doing.

Bush turned the other cheek as the the popular media protrayed him as a liar, a retarded child, a frat boy, a monkey, a nazi, a terrorist, and a war criminal (I’m sure that’s just a partial list). THIS president can’t let anyone get away with pointing out when he’s wrong (let alone lying). Of course, the fact that he can call out his flying monkeys in the alphabet media to take down anyone who gets uppity makes doing this a lot easier, but Bush could have gone a lot further in defending himself.

We don’t need to get into a race for the bottom with people who are already living there. What we need to do is to do is take Sarah Pallin’s lead and start acting like men. The “new tone” has GOT to STOP. Refusing to fight for your reputation is NOT the high road.

Where are the enforcement provisions to ensure it? Why did the Democrats on the Committee vote down an amendment that would have added those provisions?

Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (42 U.S.C. ? 1395dd, EMTALA) is a United States Act of Congress passed in 1986 as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. It requires hospitals and ambulance services to provide care to anyone needing emergency treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. There are no reimbursement provisions. As a result of the act, patients needing emergency treatment can be discharged only under their own informed consent or when their condition requires transfer to a hospital better equipped to administer the treatment.

There is no provision in the bill to actually CHECK the status of an UNDOCUMENTED ALIEN!! Meaning that since the CHECK provision doesn’t exist, it means that UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS WILL BE PROVIDED HEALTHCARE… The IMPLIED action of the bill is always overlooked once the entire bill is taken in context. That UNDOCUMENTED Section is to catch people like you to way it was… its window dressing nothing more as a mechanism to say “See? We don’t want to cover illegal aliens”… nice try.

So thus… Joe Wilson WASN’T Lying…Obama WAS Lying!
