Sen. Susan Collins (R, ME) rejects trigger for ‘public option.’ [UPDATE: Sen Snowe rejects public option]

(via @seanhackbarth) For the very commonsense reason that you can’t trust the people who would be pulling the trigger. No, really: that’s what she said.

A moderate Republican who has previously broken with her party to support President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus bill said Sunday that she does not support the idea of using a so called “trigger” on the public health insurance option as part of health care reform legislation.

Asked on CNN’s State of the Union if the use of the trigger would make inclusion of the public option more acceptable, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, unequivocally replied “no.”

“The problem with trigger is it just delays the public option,” Collins told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, “because the people who are going to be making the determination about whether the market is competitive enough, want the public option.”

Note that this doesn’t mean that Sen. Olympia Snowe is going to take the same position (although it doesn’t mean that she’ll be taking a different one, either); but Sen. Collins’ position on this does make it clear that the ‘public trigger’ scenario for a government option in health care is not actually bipartisan. Please also note that Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D, NH) apparently needed only eight months as a Senator to forget how to answer straightforward questions in a straightforward manner:

New Hampshire Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen refused to answer directly when asked whether Collins’ position indicated that President Obama should either not fight for inclusion of the public option in the final bill or, alternatively, pursue a legislative strategy that relied solely on Democratic votes for health care reform.

Again: no, really.

KING: Well, Senator Shaheen, let me come back to you. Senator Collins says she can’t support even a trigger.

So does the president have to make a decision? If a moderate Republican voice like Senator Collins, who is known to try to deal with Democrats, who voted for the stimulus — if she can’t support a trigger, does the president — has two choices, one, give it up, or two, do this with all Democrats. What should he do?

SHAHEEN: Well, first of all, I think that we’re going to have a bill that has significant bipartisan input, regardless of how the votes come out.

The bill that came out of the health committee in the Senate had 167 Republican-sponsored amendments that were adopted. So there has been significant Republican input already into the legislation.

And, you know, I think — I think we can do what Senator Collins would like to see us do, what others in the Senate have said they would like to see, with a bipartisan bill.

We can lower costs. We can improve health outcomes. Senator Collins and I have legislation that I think is going to get incorporated into the Finance Committee bill that would lower Medicare costs for people who are hospitalized. We know that a number of them go back into the hospital within 90 days. We can reduce that number. We can save $5,000 per Medicare patient. We can make them healthier. And those are the kinds of improvements we want to get into any health care bill.

And read that to see a truly entertaining comment from Sen. Collins about why the President has been losing independents.

[UPDATE] Oh, it gets better.

Via Drudge:

Snowe Urges Obama to Drop Public Plan to Pass Health Overhaul

Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine said there is “no way” a health-care overhaul that includes a public option can pass the Senate.

Snowe, one of six negotiators on the Senate Finance Committee, said that to gain more Republican support, President Barack Obama should explicitly drop the idea of a federally backed insurance program to compete with private insurers such as Hartford, Connecticut-based Aetna Inc.

[snip]

“I’ve urged the president to take the public option off the table,” Snowe said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” program. “It’s universally opposed by Republicans,” Snowe said.

Call me nuts, but it sounds like the Democrats just ran out of possible Republicans to give them cover. Guess they’re going to have to run over their own moderates to pass this health care rationing bill, then. Hey, do you know what would make currently-unhappy Republican grassroots activists smile more at their ostensible Senators? Why, those Senators shutting down the government on procedural grounds in response to the Democrats trying to ram through health care rationing via reconciliation.

Well, if she sticks with this decision then good for her. Problem is, she makes me suspicious of her every move.

    like I said elsewhere….

HR3200 will drive up costs (so any Public Option Trigger compromise – is Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun)…

It is just dumb for anyone to entertain any thought that LIBERALS in Govt. will ever allow Costs (and Budgets) to ever go down!!!

from HC Townhalls: Steny Hoyer (D-MD) edition.

(avoiding the HR3200 consequence/fact) More Govt. regulations and paperwork will DRIVE UP not reduce costs and bring us more Lawyers and Office Administrators to deal with it NOT Doctors

    more and even more

just as the CARS program hinted: Cash4Clunkers portends the HC fiasco in so many ways… Basic math!! all, of course, to drive us into that Public Option no matter how they achieve it… This Bill cannot be compromised with in any way shape or form — if the Liberals get this then they will just ram through the other pieces in other Legislation over the next few years.

Claire McCackle (yes, I know I spelled it wrong, that is how I pronounce her name) has been on every talkshow going on and on about how they HATE MediGap BECAUSE IT IS PRIVATE and not Govt. Control precursor to their Public Option…..

She hasn’t renounced her being part of The Senate HC “Gang Of Sicks”, she is just posturing for a different, but still bad, compromise on the HR3200 Bill… UNACCEPTABLE!!!!

As for Shaheen’s comments: “we can reduce that number” Uh, yeah, that’s what we KNOW you want to do. “we can make them healthier” Huh? She sounds like Britney Spears.

    Senior Senator.

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it. C&S basically do no fundamental damage to the country or the party. I’m reasonably convinced that they voted for the TRex because Specter gave them cover and took the real heat.

Neither one of the ME Girls has ever cast a real “deciding” vote against us. Neither of them has ever written legislation or tweeked Senate rules that is Constitutionally offensive, keeps well qualified judicial nominees from confirmation or sticks their thumb(s) in the eye of our US military and CIA operatives. Neither of them is in a leadership position and neither has ever taken a lead on an issue that I could find particularly offensive. OTOH, they routinely support the Senate leadership (such as it is), and with Spectre [sic] gone will not likely cause much in the way of real heartburn.

Hey Maine folks! I’ll trade you John McCain for either S or C. Straight up, you don’t even have to toss in some lobster. (But I’d take it.)

They would be leaps and bounds above Carl Levin[worhless] and Debbie Stab[y]enow{andagainlater] clowns, who make even Al Franken[steinmonster] look like a serious, and open minded, statesman. Anyone willing to trade Governors too? We’d even be happy to have SchwarzenKennedy.

  • mbecker908

She just may realize that she’s in way over her empty head and step down in ’10 though.

Especially after their ill-advised ‘Stimulus’ vote.

Ergo, the Dems absolutely *cannot* count on them to bail Obama & Reid out. In fact, they should just start counting them as ‘No’ votes from here on out.

If the Dems are going to pass this, they’re going to have to do it by breaking arms on *their own* side.

No one from this side of the aisle has any incentive to help them. Not even Collins/Snowe/Kirk/Bono-Mack types…

    stating the following:

The latest, as it relates to the Health-Care discussions:
Obama goes on about “False witness” to impugn his detractors, while his Party members continually Lie about what is in the sole plan (HR3200) in Consideration in the Congress (their distortions/lies details directly highlighted/refuted: here, here, here, and here). Further lying by claiming his own plan (Obama’s “My HC plan” Lie – Obama’s HC dodge, quoting a non-existent and/or not in consideration Plan) – he isn’t saying “His preferences are” or “HR3200 must be amended to reach these goals…” or “ANY Compromise plan must meet this criteria…” he outright Lies about a Plan no-one can read because it doesn’t exist. If it did it would be available to read from Whitehouse.gov and introduced into the House or Senate by a fellow Obamunist for Consideration – again, cannot, and will not, because it doesn’t exist!

    and the other (first):

It seems the majority in DC are NOT going to pay any attention to the mood of the country, as many of you in DC hadn’t regarding many other votes, but here goes…. Many Americans do indeed want Health INSURANCE Reform to improve the state of Health Care in America, BUT… there can be No Compromise with the current HR3200 boondoggle… It must be scraped and a new plan, encompassing REAL SOLUTIONS (Not just plans to shift HC to Govt. Takeover that HR3200 is) that we as Republicans have spoken of/for for years. Cross-State line portability, Tort reform, PreExisting condition exclusion elimination (not allowed in MI, enact that Nationally), post employment coverage (modifying COBRA and HSA/MSA accounts to NOT ZERO OUT each year so multi-year savings can/will PAY FOR OWN COVERAGE while between jobs), (avoiding the HR3200 consequence/fact) More Govt. regulations and paperwork will DRIVE UP not reduce costs and bring us more Lawyers and Office Administrators to deal with it NOT Doctors, etc…. The answers are there, if you’d only pay attention:

HC Townhall Lies – Townhall HC distortions/propaganda
    +More Townhall Hi-jinks – More HC Townhall Hi-jinks
+Townhalls 3 – HC Townhall: Like Hollywood, Democrats used new Actors to replay the same Script.
    +Townhalls 4 – HC Townhalls: Steny Hoyer (D-MD) edition.
+Public Option – sole focus on Public Option is a mistake that sets up Lib’s for another Liberal Incremental-ism step to complete HC Takeover
+Illegals exclusion – don’t fall for the “Illegals Excluded” half-truth (details here)
+No Tort Reform – Moe Lane’s Diary: Dean admits why there is No Tort Reform in ANY HC legislation
+Kennedy Bill – A Teddy Kennedy HC Bill Republicans SHOULD SPONSOR
+an aside, Kennedy seat hypocrisy – MASS looks to ex-post-facto change Law to appoint Dem. to Kennedy seat
+another aside, Obama LAST KENNEDY Bro?!?! – Chrisy Matthews declares Obama last Kennedy brother
+McCain HC – McCain HC Townhall details, another sell-out pre-declared!
+Harry/Louise – Harry & Louise want you to pay for their Head examinations?
+Gang of Sicks (er… Six) – The Senate HC “Gang Of Sicks” (formerly 7, but Hatch left and that didn’t have the fun play on words ;-) lol)
+Clunker portends – Cash4Clunkers portends the HC fiasco in so many ways… Basic math!!
+Flag@ – Flag-whitehouse.gov is down, but are the unlawful (same old trickery) actions going on via WH:RealityCheck? AND HealthCare lies still being peddled? (hint: YES, to both)
+Obama’s “My HC plan” Lie – Obama’s HC dodge, quoting a non-existent and/or not in consideration Plan
+ultimate HC Q: – The ultimate HR3200 Q: Will Fetus’ about to be Aborted qualify for End Of Life counseling, or is that reserved only for Seniors about to be effectively Euthanized by/from Rationing?!?!
+Angry mob script – Democrats and MSM keep playing the Angry Mob script

… so… what the heck… I’ll claim Credit for the Change in Attitudes of them ;-) lol
and they better stay flying right, or I’ll write them again :P

Dropping the public option from a disastrous, unconstitutional bill still leaves a disastrous, unconstitutional bill.

Not implementing the nanny state option doesn’t keep the federal government from killing my HSA. It doesn’t prevent the government from funding abortions. It doesn’t prevent the government from demanding all insurance providers cover preexisting conditions. It doesn’t prevent the government from mandating minimum coverage.

I could go on but you get the picture. This bill is a threat to our liberties and freedom of choice regarding our health. The GOP should not compromise on any part of this bill. Not a one.

Any bill the GOP agrees to must reduce government involvement and increase free market condition or be rejected.

Just wanted to be the first to use that line.

Like I said before, regardless of what the MSM wants to believe, no moderate politician missed the impact of the event. Every one of them looked out the windows and went “HOLY S**T! Forget Obama, I didn’t like him much anyhow.”

I’ve said the key to this battle is not being right, it is depending on one of mankind’s biggest vices-greed. Collins and Snowe LIKE being Senators. They like the power, the money, the perks. They will not risk giving that up for PC reasons, or trying to be seen as “enlightened” by the left. (Even though she is still pushing the “co-op” angle.)

Let me tell you a quick story about human nature. A buddy of mine was a patrolman on duty when he saw a disabled car stopped on the inside lane of a busy road. He pulls in behind the car, lights on and sees the owner walking back up the road with a gas can in his hand. No big deal. Except that my buddy looks in the rearview mirror and sees a car coming up behind him and the driver, a female, is putting makeup on and not looking at where she is going. He realizes she is going to hit him. So he throws his car into gear and jumps up on the median. The girl shoots by him and sure enough smacks the disabled car.

My buddy says the guy walking up drops his can and runs up. He says to him, “Man, why didn’t you just stay where you were at?”
To which my buddy replied. “Well, it is like this. It was either you or me, and unfortunately, it was my choice.”

Outside the core group of hard left and the Chicago machine, there will be a lot of politicians pulling up on the median. Especially if 2010 threatens to run them over.

then the obvious answer is that Reid will claim the bill can’t be filibustered.

  • peg_c

but to her credit she must be reading the tea leaves, pun only semi-intended. As a proud ingredient of Saturday’s huge shout-out to Congress, I have to wonder first, just how many elderly are there in Maine and how many has she heard from? A LOT?? My bet is the average age in Maine is way up there. She’s in danger of having her head handed to her by old people and it’s about dang time.

    Ditto Snowe.

The only good Congress is a scared spitless Congress.

  • dudette

Can anyone ever bring up the republican plan with free market perpective–hr 3400??

  • eburke

worse than Al ‘Stuart Smalley’ Frankenstein. My ‘home state’ of MN worked awfully hard to claim the mantra of selecting the biggest, vilest, most obscene POS buffoon ever elected by a state to serve in the US Senate and I won’t have you taking that title away from us without a fight.

Census Bureau information/projections has Maine with the 7th highest percentage of those over 65 as of the 2000 census and is predicted to be in 3rd place in 2010 and 2nd place in 2030. (First place for all three years is Florida)

  • Scope

that’s a choice I would not want to have to make, even with a year’s supply of Lobster. McCain’s 70 or 71, you’d be stuck with the Maine chicks alot longer. Then again, isn’t McCain’s mother like 150 years old? Whooosh-that’s a tough one.

My quiet implication being they are propping that fool up with fluff introductions/sponsorships and what-not to make him look/seem “NORMAL” – which, of course, he will never really be…. I can’t wait for the real Al Franken[steinmonster] to show up… It will be good for helping to Elect some Republicans. He will NOT be able to maintain his cool for too long and he’s probably already choking on that short leash they are trying to keep him on. The PitBull will snarl and bite his Masters soon enough.

  • eburke

at some point in time and then, God-willing and the creek don’t rise, he’s toast.
(though there must be something in the water up here – how a state elects a former ‘professional’ wrestler and a vile, obscene, blowhard comedian to elected office is beyond me)

‘Course, I’m still trying to figure out how the good folks in MI, union dolts that they might be, continue to reelect the same clowns that got them into this mess. I mean, at a certain level I can understand the US Senate thing ’cause they can always blame the mess on someone else but how in God’s name Granholm keeps getting reelected is beyond me.
