White House still on track for not closing Gitmo.

They’ve got a deadline coming up, but the Democrats are confident that they can let the clock run out without actually closing the facility that they’ve carefully turned into the symbol of all American governmental evil over the last eight years. It’ll require a tremendous amount of baldfaced lying and epic-level hypocrisy, but the Democrats are up to the challenge. They were born for this.

Still, don’t worry: it’ll still all be Bush’s fault.

White House Counsel Gregory B. Craig, who initially guided the effort to close the prison and who was an advocate of setting the deadline, is no longer in charge of the project, two senior administration officials said this week.

Craig said Thursday that some of his early assumptions were based on miscalculations, in part because Bush administration officials and senior Republicans in Congress had spoken publicly about closing the facility. “I thought there was, in fact, and I may have been wrong, a broad consensus about the importance to our national security objectives to close Guantanamo and how keeping Guantanamo open actually did damage to our national security objectives,” he said.

I wait with baited breath for the day that this administration announces that the stubborn patch of crabgrass on the White House lawn is due to Republican operatives sneaking onto the grounds at night to spread seeds. My best guess? Probably May of 2011. They’ll announce it on a Friday, so as to distract from explaining why they still hadn’t closed Gitmo, repealed DoMA, or ended Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

I think the American public has already grown weary of the Bush did it, Bush lied, Bush’s fault meme.

President Bush in office seems like a decade ago, not eight months. Think about it, prime time television appearances, Sunday talk shows, late night guest spots; how can anyone remember George Bush? The MSM adoringly prints and reports every move of Obama, and our side has his name in the news for reporting the Socialist moves his administration is making. Even the half hr. news reports on Talk Radio almost always play a clip of something he has said that day.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the media blitz that is all things Obama, turned out to have accomplished what the Leftist Dems would not have wanted? You cannot blame George W. Bush if no one remembers him. Perhaps the law of unintended consequences will work in our favor.

Of course, we who care about our country, remember and have respect for George W. Bush, regardless of any shortcomings he had.

P.S. I must tell you Jim, I did the hyperlink with a HTML code. Apparently, I do not have the “text formatting toolbar” of FF installed on my computer, and that is why I cannot see the “link” button. How do I obtain the FF version?

Here. Using the FF browser, click on download and it will install automatically. After restarting FireFox it will appear as a too; bar ;) below your bookmarks toolbar. Mouse over the symbols to see what each one does. When typing a comment or diary when you highlight text you want to place html tags around, the toolbar will activate, with some of the symbols changing color.

    Have fun!

…and your rabid Leftie supporters too!

These guys are teh dumm – they don’t seem to have any reelection plan besides “It’s all Bush’s fault.”

I wonder if anyone will ever explain to them that trying this line is a guaranteed ticket to a reelection *loss* to an Executive position like President.

(Funny thing about the voters – They want to hear what *you’ve* done for them lately. They aren’t interested in a bunch of ‘pie in the sky’ excuses about how everything is everybody else’s fault *but* yours…)

you change it to HTML. It formats text in 3 flavors, BBcode, HTML, and Wiki. The selector is at the right end of the toolset.

To empty the prison, the administration will need to find facilities to house 50 to 60 prisoners who cannot be released and who cannot be tried because of legal impediments, according to an administration official.

So in other words the difference with the Bush view is … none. Bush wanted to close Gitmo when the time was right, and all The One did during the campaign was say it would be easy. YOU LIE! In fact it was so easy, he grabbed a closure date out of thin air. YOU LIE!

And when you think about it the dozen or so that have been released so far were the EASIEST ones to deal with. It will get geometrically harder as they proceed. Not mentioned in this article is that close to 100 of these detainees are Yemenis. (That may include some of the 50-60 they did mention.) It’s a well-known fact that if they get sent back to Yemen as prisoners that they will be free men in short order – either they will be released outright or they will HAPPEN to escape from prison.

Heck he might as well do it like health care and announce that he’s 80% done, because the simplest cases are all out of the way now.

But after a little research I thought the “Move to US Supermax” might have actually been pretty cool.
Of course the left would’ve found a way to shut that down eventually, then we’d have the detainees greeting at WalMart. Or possibly opening restaurants like these guys.

    Begin uber-snarkified commentary……….

    January 21, 2010
    Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
    11:59pm Eastern
(Combined Reports via CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, The NY Times and administration Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.)

In what 52% of media viewers/readers and 78% of Jews in the US agree with as an outreach and extended olive branch to the peace-loving religious world, the most merciful US President Barack Obama on his one-year anniversary of ruling the land, has ordered the immediate release of the remaining 200 wrongfully-held political prisoners taken by Teh Eeeeevil Booooooooooosh administration.

All charges against the obviously completely innocent detainees have been dropped. On the way out the door of the now-permanently-closed “Gitmo” facility, the former detainees were afforded first-class air transportation to destinations of their choosing, new clothing and as a further apology, each gifted $2.5 million USD (tax free of course).

This ends a sad chapter in US history where an out of control “cowboy president” thought he could bypass Congress and do whatever he wanted, supposedly in the name of national security.

Teh Eeeeevil Booooooooooosh never ‘got it’ that if we allow all peace-loving people to go about their day unbound by the chains of Republicans, they would love all of us in return.

    End uber-snarkified commentary.

    One thing though…….
Why do I have the sinking feeling that scenario is completely probable, not just possible ?
