(Via AoSHQ) I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m starting to get a little tired of this.
…one starts to wonder if the country wouldn’t be better off without them and if Republicans should be cut out of the health-care system entirely and simply provided with aspirin and hand sanitizer. Thirty-two percent of the population identifies with the GOP, and if we cut off health care to them, we could probably pay off the deficit in short order.
You’ll notice that this doesn’t come with a corresponding tax forgiveness. I hadn’t realized that Keillor had a hankering to bring back slavery; well, live and learn.

charpaddy Thursday, October 1st at 6:34AM EDT (link)What shameful idiots!!!
Why don’t the Dems just line everyone up that disagrees with a takeover of our healthcare system (which happens, in case one forgets, to be the BEST IN THE WORLD) and shoot them?
After all, they are such a compassionate party…/sarc off
Abortions for all with our tax money. Healthcare for all illegals (’coz they aren’t going to be illegal anymore)

No, they don’t have to line political opponents up against the wall. All those in power have to do is deny health care to Conservatives.

clowngirl Thursday, October 1st at 7:39AM EDT (link)As Moe wrote, he is suggesting slavery and it also just an exagerration of the too common notion that Democrats have some right to use tax money for any and every arbitrary whim.
Besides that his comment doesn’t even make sense. His logic (such as it is) would seem to suggest that the 32% of the population that identifies as Republican are a burden to the state and our use of healthcare is draining the National coffers.
I haven’t seen the statistics, but other than medicare recepients it would seem more likely that people using government provided healthcare are voting Democrat. Exit polls showed that voters who self described as ” very worried” about their own finances (the only group likely to qualify for “free” healthcare) voted for Obama overwhelmingly.

Mea Culpa: Ex-Keillor fan here
RedBeard Thursday, October 1st at 7:46AM EDT (link)Yes, I was, in the distant past, a faithful listener to A Prarie Home Companion. For years I enjoyed the simple humor and music of that show.
Then, at the beginning of the George Bush era, I suddenly discovered Keillor’s dark side, the cramped and sweat-soaked recesses of his brain where his dysfunctional, angry, hateful basic nature lay in hiding before.
It’s always disapponting when someone lets me down, and this was no exception. It was rather like discovering that sweet old Uncle Harold was, in fact, a secret fifth-columnist.
Perhaps Keillor’s problem can be assigned to something clinical. Or maybe it’s as simple as him being an ignorant braying jackass. Either way, it saddens me.

Next93 Thursday, October 1st at 8:10AM EDT (link)I was also a Prairie Home fan (Minnesota’s my adopted home state, and I loved the Lake Woebegon stories). I’d actually describe Keilor’s leanings as Nazi-like; socialism coupled with a deep, violent, and ruthless hatred (as evinced by statements like this) towards anyone with the temerity to disagree with him.
The interesting thing is that he gets to do his propagandizing on the government dime; Minnesota Public Radio has the best equipment and nicest offices of any broadcasting entity in the state.

Keillor, another "victim" of American Capitalism.
penguin2 Thursday, October 1st at 10:40AM EDT (link)I’ve heard stuff like this before from him and that kept me from reading any of his works. What a gross misapplication of statistics
Right_Again Thursday, October 1st at 7:47AM EDT (link)According to Keillor, thirty-two percent of the population identifies with the GOP. However, according to the last Ramussen poll, fifty-four percent of the population disagree with the Democrat’s position on health care.
Unfortunately the Democrats are refusing to listen to the majority, who in this instance, have finally found a situation where they think Obama and the Dems should hit the “reset” button.
I am not aware of any Republican or conservative who thinks we should not have some type of health care reform. But, the Democrats approach of remaking the whole system is unacceptable.
Open competition for health insurance between states, include some type of tort reform and keep the government out of health care as much as possible. With this plan, a majority of the country and even Republicans would be on board. I would even be willing to allow Democrats to participate in this plan, unlike the heartless Mr. Keillor.
The Democrats have proven, by their refusal to listen to the majority, that they are not interested in consensus health care reform, but only in a power grab.
The Gore Vidal of his age
Next93 Thursday, October 1st at 7:50AM EDT (link)I’m sure Keilor would be delighted at the comparison, but reading the interview with Vidal yesterday, I was struck with the stereotypical sense of infallible intellectual superiority, imperious manner, and near-total disconnection with reality; it immediately put me in mind of Keilor. Perfect Limousine Liberals.
Garrison seems to spend half his time in his pleasant fantasy world of Lake Woebegon, and the other half in a much nastier fantasy world in which he, and people like him, are the only protection that the vast masses of the opressed have from the evil, baby-eating “others” that he uses the generic term “Republican” to describe.
Funny thing, though - in this part of the country you hear a lot more about charity work being done by the local Vikings players than you hear about Keilor’s charity work. If he actually does anything for those masses that he seems to care so much about (other than excoriating others for not agreeing with him), he keeps it pretty well hidden. Of course, I’m sure he’s more than generous with his contributions to the local

I believe they are genuinely afraid of a government that seemingly believes they have no limits to the ways and extent to which they can intrude into our lives and take our hard earned wealth. I pray this course will be corrected in 2010 and 2012, I hope we can fend off this march towards a Marxist/Facist government.

I think Keillor is a closet Republican
Brad Smith Thursday, October 1st at 8:55AM EDT (link)You guys aren’t thinking this through. If we cut Republicans out of Obama care, the ranks of Republicans (call them “Republicans of Medical Convenience”) would swell. Everyone would be trying to cut to the head of line, or avoid the new health care taxes, by claiming to be Republican. But there would have to be some type of proof, so we’d demand evidence of a financial contribution to the party, or a completed absentee ballot for the next election.
This is a deal I would take in a moment. Democrats get to design their health care system, and live with it, and we get to design ours, and live with it. But the Democrats won’t go for it, ultimately, because the success of their plan - such as it might be - is contingent on roping everybody in.

The issue here that’s being “filibustered” is health care reform, which if there were unanimity on the Dem side would be law already.
The flip side of your argument is the Dems, while in the minority, blocking judicial appointments on strictly ideological grounds. Let me guess; those were impassioned patriots, right?

huskerchad Thursday, October 1st at 10:09AM EDT (link)The fact that the left can’t wait to use health care access as a political weapon seems like a pretty good reason not to have the government in charge of it in the first place. Keillor proves what conservatives have said all along–when the government controls health care, they will control every aspect of your life, even your political views.
Do you have the “wrong” opinion on abortion? Taxes? Size of government? No health care for you!
Keillor is just the same progression we see starting to happen with leading Republican pundits
civil_truth Thursday, October 1st at 10:42AM EDT (link)Keillor is just further along in the process. But we see this happening all the time in American today, and throughout history too.
First you gain some success and recognition by the intelligentsia and the “important” people in LA, New York, and perhaps Washington. Then you adopt their arrogance and think you’re somehow superior to the “ordinary people” from which you arose (i.e Lake Wobegon). Then you start adopting their worldview that the American public is ignorant and bigoted and that only the enlightened class can save them. (Though in Keillor’s case, I think he may have adopted the European worldliness first before he went with the American liberal elite.)
Before long, as the people continue to go their “ignorant” way and interfere with your efforts to deliver them, you then decide that they are the problem and they need to disappear in order for your utopia to happen. Which is where Keillor appears to be momentarily.
And soon this effort to make opponents “disappear” turns murderous, with reeducation camps and the whole Stalinist endless cycle of purges and constant new sets of counterevolutioniariesand become utter monstrosity.
While the enlightened intelligentsia first applaud before they quickly get consumed by the evil they have prepared the way for.
And Rightly So!

Paying off the Debt
MidwayUSA Thursday, October 1st at 3:28PM EDT (link)I find it funny that Keeler thinks it would be helpful to kill off Republicans to pay off the debt. Maybe he doesn’t know how to do basic arithmetic.
If you have fewer people to pay off the debt, it costs those remaining more. therefore the burden is higher.
I also think he is using the same logic as those who want illegal immigrants to be covered by the health insurance bill. On one hand we are told they are needed because they are younger and healthier, so will pay into the fund, but not use the fund.
However,
They also tell us illegal immigrants need health insurance (the insurance they won’t or don’t use),
They also tell us we are going bankrupt with the epidemic of illegal immigrants using emergency rooms.
The really poor logic is
Socrates Friday, October 2nd at 5:13AM EDT (link)that Republicans are the ones who want to pay for their own insurance. “Want to pay for your own? OK, you can’t.”
Forced shareing is called theft.
