Democrats Against Breast-Feeding.

Or possibly just working mothers.

You may remember the ‘tampon tax‘ discovered in the Baucus bill – short version: Baucus went out and did a mass tax on medical devices to supposedly pay for his ‘compromise;’ unfortunately for him, things like condoms and tampons are classified as ‘medical devices’ – and you’d think that the resulting loud objections would have caused the Senator (more accurately, the Senator’s staff) to more thoroughly vet their policy changes.

You’d think. What Baucus did was do a quick hack and make the threshold for taxation $100.  Amanda Carpenter points out the problem with that:

But, just wait for the revolt to start again because women will still pay a price under the new structure. Particularly new moms who want to use a powered breast pump to bottle milk for their babies. Those devices, labeled class II, typically retails for more than $100.

And, all the rest of the more expensive, higher-class medical devices used by both men an women — such as pacemakers, ventilators, X-ray machines, powered wheelchairs and surgical needles — will be taxed, too.

Speaking as a stay-at-home dad, I can say with some authority that breast pumps make it a lot easier for working mothers to do both. I am stunned that the Democrats apparently care so little about either working mothers or the poor (who will be disproportionately affected by this legislation, as usual) that they’d blithely write legislation as slipshod as this. And that’s just the breast pumps. What are we going to say to somebody who can’t afford the tax on his or her pacemaker? “Sorry?”

“manual milking,” If it’s good enough for cows it’s good enough for mom.

Anyone who points my wife to this comment is a dead man.

of course you might want to hope she doesn’t read this.

My wife pumped for our two kids. For us it was essential. My wife had severe health problems as a result of both pregnancies. The pump allowed me to help my wife since we could pump and freeze the extra milk. This made it possible for me to get up and feed my kids while my wife slept. If we could not pump my wife would have needed to wake up and hook them up to a breast each time they needed to be fed.

Also, a good one was expensive and we were flat broke (like many newly married couples with kids), so a tax may have made it impossible for us to get one.

the breastfeeding rates of lower income mothers are very low. You are correct though a descent pump to replace a baby eating is way over $100. We need some tasteful pictures of mothers in a NICU pump room. I would criticize the republicans that have supported WIC all these years too it isn’t fair to say it’s just democrats re the headline.

I didn’ know medical supplies were not taxed but to put a tax on them if they haven’t been well that is awful. These people have no respect for the vulnerable.

Like Moe, I’m a Stay-at-Home dad (more like a Work-on-Home dad, but that’s another story) whose three children were all breast-fed, and they are almost never sick. So Baucus essentially wants to discourage breast-feeding, which will probably lead to more health problems down the road, put more strain on our healthcare system and put greater fianacial burden on consumers.

Not to mention that doctors all complain about the cost of medical supplies and technology, from cotton swabs to MRI machines. How will raising the taxes on all of this stuff reduce the cost of it?

…by taxing the medical equipment intended for the public.

Makes as much sense as telling the Taliban that in order to continue the war against terror, they will now need to pay for the bombs we drop on them and the fuel for the drones.

We’re sorry, but common sense has left the Capitol Building for now,

If mom is working full-time, the pump she’ll want would be $200 at least, if bought new.

Way to Go, democrats. Moms who are obligated to work full time after having children can at least have the satisfaction of knowing their babies are getting the best possible nutrition while they are away…at least until you make it more difficult than it already can be and discourage moms from trying, or force them to choose a lesser pump which will reduce their chances of success.

    Sigh.

    – Mom to two amazing boys who got pumped milk for a year and breastfed for longer than that.

are also over $100 retail. Should I just tell my son he’ll have to tough it out the next time he has an asthma attack?

Breathalyzer is what the cops use when you’ve been at the corner bar too long and try to drive home.

    It is very clear -
    a) the only thing they care about is to ram this thing through
    b) they’ll define the “thing” as they go
    c) they’ll rob and pilfer every possible nook and cranny to pay for it.
    d) our taxes are going way up.

It’s very obvious that the task at hand is well beyond the job description of most in both houses. They are just making it up as they go. They are going to get very ‘creative’ to find ways to implement taxes that are not taxes. What a poor waste of biological mass these dimwits are.

Motorized wheelchairs. Most of the disabled people who use motorized wheelchairs live on small, fixed incomes. A good motorized custom wheelchair is well over $10,000. I think it’s an excellent idea to tax people who can least afford it.

Let’s see what else will be charged taxes:

Ostomy supplies for those who’ve had major intestinal or urinary tract work (bet these surgeries eventually stop under Universal Health Slavery – you can just die and get out of the way).
Oxygen supplies for those with respiratory ills
Diabetic supplies (Needles, testers and the strips).
    Glasses and contacts.
    Dentures.
    Hearing Aids.
Artificial limbs (for all those veterans who got them blown off by terrorists).
    Crutches.
I wonder if Guide Dogs for the blind qualify as equipment or their canes? Certainly the braille reader/writers used for communication.

    It goes on and on.

How about we the people start charging an oxygen tax to the useless mouth breathers in Congress. We lay hand on them and tax them with the beatings of their life – which they so richly deserve.

PS – - I absolutely meant no insult/offense to you or your son. I myself sat twice a day for many months with our daughter and her nebulizer until she, thankfully, outgrew her condition. I just couldn’t resist a dig at the Socialist Creep.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

I’m not surprised I hadn’t either. A gaffe like that made by a prominent Republican would’ve been headline news for at least a week.

Hi NT! I love your CO site, nicely done.

The Baucus crap will also tax me directly in trying to take care of my daughter: [shameless self plug]http://www.redstate.com/remington_steele/2009/10/08/dont-tax-my-autistic-child/
