Department of Labor: unemployment rate 10.2%.

Ten. Point. Two.

Tell me again why we’re not doing something about this?

The unemployment rate rose from 9.8 to 10.2 percent in October, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline (-190,000), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The largest job losses over the month were in construction, manufacturing, and retail trade.

Household Survey Data

In October, the number of unemployed persons increased by 558,000 to 15.7 million. The unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage point to 10.2 percent, the highest rate since April 1983. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons has risen by 8.2 million, and the unemployment rate has grown by 5.3 percentage points. (See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (10.7 percent) and whites (9.5 percent) rose in October. The jobless rates for adult women (8.1 percent), teenagers (27.6 percent), blacks (15.7 percent), andHispanics (13.1 percent) were little changed over the month. The unemployment rate for Asians was 7.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

Aside from the fact that if this administration does do something about this, they’ll have to explain why what they did back in the beginning of the year didn’t actually work. They probably don’t want to discuss the problem that Democratic legislators are more interested in passing cap-and-tax and health care rationing for their pet fringe groups than they are in fixing the economy. They definitely don’t want to talk about how a lot of this is due to moral cowardice on the part of the current ruling party…

They ARE doing something about it

Their actions drove it up.

It is actually much worse than the reported 10.2%

malbis Friday, November 6th at 2:52PM EST (link)

Official government figures on the real unemployment rate set it at 17.5%.

That’s the rate that would have been in the headlines prior to the changes in how unemployment numbers are reported in 1993. And that still isn’t as bad as it really is.

The real unemployment rate for October, 2009, is 21.4% — more than twice the reported 10.2% rate — once you add all the numbers up.

Can you imagine what the MSM would do

if a Republican were president right now?It wouldn’t just be the top news story, there would be hour long “special reports”on the unemployment crises in the country. Newspapers would be reporting on the homeless and growing soup lines.
That Obama’s poll ratings still hover around 50% is due to the media downplaying his failures and the growing crises. However, things are getting so bad that even they can’t cover for him much longer.

the lead was an “upbeat” how job losses are slowing. Six years ago, the stories I recall were how the economy was growing BUT, median salaries were down, or not everyone was benefiting, or the numbers don’t match reality, or some angle to reflect negatively on the economy. In fact, for the entire first six years of the Bush administration, the media focused on how poor the economy really was.

So as I understand it over the last couple of months the unemply numbers have been where they where because pleople where dropping of the rolls as their unemployment ran out. And didn’t I hear yesterday that Congress had passed ANOTHER extension.
So will this mean that this 10.2 is likly to go even higher as those who have come off the roll start to take advantage of this new extensin and go back on the rolls?

That’s how we got in this mess in the first place. Remember TARP? Porkulus? All the other senseless spending? The justification is always that there is a crisis, the people want solutions.

How about shutting down the government for a few months.

I mean, something must be done, right? And that’s something, so it must be done.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw Moe’s headline. We know what he means with that headline, but great shades of Elvis don’t let any Congresscritters hear it come out that way. And while I like Socrates’ suggestion, for once I settle for something a bit more moderate. Like say a moratorium on new taxes and spending, and maybe for good measure something that freezes tax rates where they are at least until we get out of this depression. And yes, I get to use that word according to the comedic differentiation between a depression and a recession.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

How about shutting down the government for a few YEARS

If you look at the details, the story is even more bleak

bk Friday, November 6th at 9:47AM EST (link)

Ref: AP version on Yahoo

Nearly 16 million people can’t find jobs even though the worst recession since the Great Depression has apparently ended. Many economists worry that persistently high unemployment could undermine the recovery by restraining consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the economy.

Economists say the unemployment rate could climb as high as 10.5 percent next year because employers remain reluctant to hire.

Counting those who have settled for part-time jobs or stopped looking for work, the unemployment rate would be 17.5 percent, the highest on records dating from 1994.

One sign of how hard it still is to find a job: the number of Americans who have been out of work for six months or longer rose to 5.6 million, a record. They comprise 35.6 percent of the unemployed population, matching a record set last month.

The average work week was unchanged at 33 hours, a disappointment because employers are expected to add more hours for current workers before they begin hiring new ones.

There were some bright spots in the report. Professional and business services companies added 18,000 jobs. And temporary employment grew by 33,700 jobs, after losing positions for months. That’s a positive sign because employers are likely to add temporary workers before hiring permanent ones.

Still, economists expect jobs likely will remain scarce even as the economy improves. Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial, said that small businesses, a primary engine of job creation, still face tight credit and don’t have the cash reserves to support extra workers.

While the unemployment rate hasn’t yet topped the post-World War II high of 10.8 percent set in December 1982, many experts say this recession is worse.

The unemployment rate was much lower when the recession began — 4.9 percent in December 2007, compared with 7.2 percent in July 1981, when a brutal downturn started. That means the current job cuts have been much steeper to get to the 10 percent mark.

“This may be the toughest employment situation we’ve seen in the postwar era,” Mark Gertler, an economics professor at New York University, said in an interview earlier this week.

A couple of editorial comments…

Why is temp workers going up a good sign? If businesses are hiring temps instead of regular workers, it could be a sign that they don’t trust the direction things are going. It’s a good sign perhaps when things boom and it’s hard to find permanent workers so you use temps to get you past a bubble. I guess temps going up is better than both categories going down, but other than that I don’t see where it’s good news.

And didn’t Obama spent untold billions of dollars to get us part the credit crunch? That seemed to work pretty well, didn’t it? Unemployment is rising in part because small businesses are finding credit is tight. Nice job President Obama!

Stimulus made it WORSE

medamorphus Friday, November 6th at 10:10AM EST (link)

Everybody remember the promises made by Obama when they pushed the Stimulus Bill. Unemployment would not go above 8% if we passed it, and if we did NOT pass it, we ran the danger of unemployment hitting 9%.

The Stimulus Bill by Obama’s own numbers made it WORSE than if we did NOTHING.

Small business are not going to hire new workers

jonreagan Friday, November 6th at 11:23AM EST (link)

as long as Government Health Care and Cap & Trade are on the horizon. Both entail higher costs, higher taxes, and increased regulations. No business owner is going to commit to increased labor costs with that much uncertainty in the immediate future, It just ain’t going to happen.

Given that small businesses account for between 50%-70% of new jobs, this will continue to be a jobless recovery, i.e., for those that are still determined to call it a recovery.

Given that Obama and Pelosi ran around last February chanting that “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!” was their number one priority, it’s great timing that this report comes out the day before Pelosi tries to ram Obamacare through the House. It may scare off some wavering members who are on the fence.

of working with small business….

There are great opportunities for freelancers and one or two person operations. However, as people get layed off the ranks of the freelancers are swelling - thus more competition and pressure on days rates and budgets.

Most of the people I know are not eligible for unemployment. If you own your own business - can you fire yourself?

Team Obama might as well have hung out a sign last January: “Private sector leaders need not apply”

This Cabinet, as well as all of Obama’s parasitic czars are drawn almost exclusively from government, academia, Wall Street, and unions. Indeed, many have never done real work or had real jobs.

Even at Commerce, where they went through one nominee after another, there was nobody like Carlos Gutierrez, former CEO at Kellogg, to join the team and offer any private sector perspectives. So I agree with you—it’s totally a government/socialist approach to economics.

Only free market capitalist solutions will get us out of this ditch….but there’s absolutely nobody in this crowd who will step up and offer those types of remedies.

STOP HELPING

President Barack Obama on jobs: ‘I won’t let up’

Please, let up; the country can’t stand anymore buffunery from you or your minions.

I was a liberal until I learned to read, got a job and was mugged by weak-willed tax and spend politicians and their naive acolytes.

It's higher than that.

Third Street Friday, November 6th at 1:23PM EST (link)

I can only imagine how much of a buffing and massaging the Obama Labor Department had to give the unemployment numbers just to keep them “officially” in single digits for this long. I have no doubt that the true adjusted rate has been well above 10% for some time now and that only now has it gone high enough that the administration is unable to maintain that lie anymore.

A few weeks ago I heard a local radio host who claimed that he had recalculated the unemployment numbers according to the way they were figured in 1960, which he says gave a more accurate picture of the true rate of joblessness. Maybe he knew what he was talking about and maybe he didn’t, but he claimed that according to his calculations the “real” unemployment rate was 23%.

It started under Clinton in 1993

malbis Friday, November 6th at 3:16PM EST (link)

and the “massaging” is amazing to behold. The number of people who “don’t count” in unemployment numbers is almost beyond belief. That 10.2% figure is basically meaningless.

The best figure on the “real” unemployment rate for October, 2009, is a little lower than the figure you quoted, but not by much — 21.4%. About one out of five Americans who would like to work is unemployed. The breakdown of the current facts and figures is here.

INDEX WATCH…THE MISERY CREEP
The US Misery Index is now 9.6%…it was 8.51% in September…
cutting the demo-socialist Party some slack by starting in September…
after controlling congress since Jan. 2007…
they are nearing 3 years of making laws-spending. Look to democrats ALONE.
Misery Index for October 2009 (9.6%) = Unemployment rate (10.2%) + Inflation rate (-.6%)
If you search the Web…you will find that forecasts are for inflation to rise month after month…prediction is 0% for this month then on the rise.
Keep in mind demo-socialist J. Carter (21.98%) is the current recordholder for misery…as the demo-socialist Party gov-meant keeps wildly borrowing and vote buying we all know that produces a much HIGHER Misery Index.
We also know the next Socialist Party Phase is taxation.
Its simply what they do, what they believe in and what they will do again (while blameshifting-promising 24-7).
