Rep. Bill Owens (D NY-23) breaks his word on the public option.

(H/T: Big Government) I’m actually not upset about this, seeing as I knew all along that he’d break his word.  Fish swim, birds fly, ‘conservative’ Democratic legislators betray their principles on cue.  And so it is, here:

GOUVERNEUR, NY – Congressman-elect Bill Owens was sworn in at noon today.

Owens indicated in a press release that he was now in favor of the bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during his campaign.

According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill.  Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.

More at the link, including the three other promises that Owens has already broken. I would like to believe that this is a record of some sort, but it’s probably not.

Moe Lane

PS: Do not expect any so-called ‘Blue Dog’ or supposed ‘conservative’ Democrat to voluntarily get in the way of their party’s health care rationing bill.  They vote as they are bid – and the ones doing the bidding are not their constituents.

I’m very impressed that he had time to read the bill on the way to DC. yeah right.

    Hoffman would not….

Sooooooo, NY-23 voters who believed Owens would be a man of his word…..props to you…..

Next year – get rid of Owens. Oh and have fun paying for those healthcare taxes on top of your crushing burden of other NY taxes…..

    Then you’re toast, dirtbag.
‘Till then, try not to soil your seat for the next person.

The blue dogs that vote for this will get wiped out in 2010, but I’m afraid they’re going to go along with Pelosi after she promises them the world.

The whole “conservative Democrat” line was always a farce. Blue dogs were just Democrats that had to pretend not to be liberals because they were out of step with their conservative district.

I would prefer this health care bill bot be passed at all, but I beginning to think it’s going to. The upside is there will be a huge purge of Democrats in 2010. I’m just afraid it’s going to be one of those entitlements we’ll never get rid of.

IIRC she was being quite cagey with her position on it. (How can you possibly be unsure where you stand on such a divisive issue?). She was a good ‘kill’, and if she got into congress her incumbency advantage would have kept her in office for the next 30 years.

Hey NY-23, how do you like your change now????

  • redneck_hippie

they still possessed a representative republic. Oh well, more converts to our movement will be forthcoming in NY-23. This is exactly the type of betrayal that sells Liberty and Tyrrany, creates R voters, and sells airline tickets to Washington, DC. United Airlines must really love us.

Don’t worry, most of them will be gone in 10 years.

There won’t be any paper left to print our worthless dollars on.

When they get back to their districts after voting for this turd, their constituents are going to put their collective bags in a vice and crank until their tongues come out and their faces turn blue.

And in 2010, they get to retire.

If this guy doesn’t support the House bill, his career as a Democrat will vanish like dust in the wind after Rahm is finished with him.

Knowing politicians, this is probably not any record, but I can’t remember any breaking a campaign promise so fast. Of course there are special circumstances here. Usually there is more time between the election and the swearing-in, and between the swearing-in and the voting on significant issues. Still, Owens really comes off as two-faced.

now Casablanca comes to mind where Captain Renault says, “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!”

I’m glad I was sitting down when I read this story.

Wouldn’t want him to feel left out, would you?

And fools on both sides of the spectrum continue to use the phrase.
Owens couldn’t wait to announce the double cross, Scarface Pelosi beckoned, he crawled.
Owens will have another date with Mr Hoffman, quite soon. The only question is whether the water brained dimmies who voted for this slug will either care or even remember.
72 hours and he knifes the voters in the back, a real Democrat.and just like Dede the Blimp.

…in which she claims that she would have voted wholeheartedly AGAINST this liberty-destroying, fiscally irresponsible boondoogle.

    She’ll be lying.

But that would be the very smartest thing the liberal RINOs could do: the unspoken (or explicit) message would be “See, if only those conservative wackjobs hadn’t interfered, we woulda had another vote against Obamacare. But following their socon litmus test is just cutting off Republicans’ nose to spite their face. We need more moderates…” She could also cry a few crocodile tears about Owens’ “reversal” — “I believed his pre-election assurances, etc etc”

It’s all bilge, of course. She, too, would have been a solid Owens-like vote for Obamacare; she is not now, and never has been, an “80% with us” kind of gal. But if she — now — claims otherwise, it’d be a very smart bit of political jiu-jitsu.

I wonder whether NY-23 knows how to spell “RECALL”?

  • IJB

    What an idiot.

Maybe he already has polling showing that he was going to lose next year no matter what, and so decided to tack left to win favor with the Nutroots.

But this guy’s a fool – if he had just stuck to voting ‘No’ on ObamaCare, he would likely have won reelection easily next year, and held the seat for the Dems.

Now, he’s as much as handed this district back to the GOP come Nov. 2010.
    What a maroon!!

But you know. We have no assurance whatsoever on these kinds of people.

NY , up around the Adirondacks , just got Specter’d . Don’t be surprised if he runs as a Repub next year.

…for a politician lying to get elected, then breaking his or her word after being elected.

They have the state-run media running interference when election time rolls around. And senators especially, have six years by which time Rip Van America will have forgotten their deceit.

It’s high time that lying politicians, who are knowingly committing GRAND LARCENY by campaigning under false pretenses to be put on the public dole for life, be held personally and criminally responsible for their behaviour.

Between Owens and Scozzafava somebody was going to make sure the Dems had at least one more vote on their assault on the people of this country.

    NY23 voters aren’t so sharp.

They could have had a stiff but honest accountant that would protect their money, or a bald-faced liar. They went for the liar.

  • DavidS1787

he had Obama fever where everyone is all flushed and gets Amnesia in the presence of Barack Obama.

The people will remind Owen’s in 2010.

are incredible motivators and mind changers. I heard Owens was holding out but the table saw and the construction bags sealed the deal.
