Sen. Graham knocks around AG Holder on KSM.

I know that Senator Lindsey Graham (R, SC) is not on a lot of people’s Christmas card lists, but this exchange between him and Attorney General Eric Holder was four minutes, forty seconds’ worth of pure schooling:

Not filmed was the bit in the end where Holder was on the floor, looking for his teeth. You do not walk into a situation like that without an elementary knowledge of the relevant historical record*. You do not come completely unprepared for a obviously-telegraphed question like “So. What are you going to do with a captured bin Laden?” And you do not assume that Senators like being given the mushroom treatment. Because if you do any of that, you can be assured that some Senator, somewhere, will take the opportunity to introduce you to pain.

Moe Lane

PS: No, really. NPR even noticed. NPR. Via Newsbusters, via Instapundit:

The exchange started with Graham stumping Holder with a question one would have thought the attorney general would have been prepared for…

Not one of Holder’s better days.

*Reminded me of this, actually.

I was surprised!

That the minority party was allowed to ask question and alloted any time to speak.

It was nice to see, but...

bkeyser Thursday, November 19th at 11:31AM EST (link)

you have to wonder how much of that was a response to the resent censure.

Also Lindsey, when you have a fighter on the ropes, don’t let him off. We would have been better served had you let Holder meander his way through one unintelligible -I can’t really answer that in public or everyone will know this is all about putting Bush on trial- answer after another rather than jumping in and answering for him. Let the snake squirm next time.

What got Lindsay riled was...

Vassar Bushmills Friday, November 20th at 2:36PM EST (link)

…nothing you think it is.

It was professional vanity, that’s all. He didn’t like the AG march into his turf and say things he knew wasn’t so.

I’m old, have been around, also and ex-JAG, and that’s about as deep as Lindsay Graham will (or can) go. As deep as a pool of warm spit.

Today he’s reading the kudo’s…hope he reads this, as I’m onto him…tomorrow, he’ll be sticking his finger up in the air all over again.
He’s just a type.
Next time around, the people of SC are going to open up a can of Yi-Had! on his behind.

holder needs to follow

bobojake Thursday, November 19th at 11:33AM EST (link)

van jones and craig OUT the door. He recommended pardoning terrorist and clinton did for terrorists that didn’t want to be pardoned. holder is not competent to be holding the AG job. He had to negoiate with Ensgin at a Las Vegas meeting last week so holder and Ensign and Reid didn’t appear live on the same stage. It time to BEE GONE FOR HOLDER.

I can't see the video at work (sigh)

Trelaina Thursday, November 19th at 11:35AM EST (link)

but I heard some of the audio this morning on Bill Bennett’s show. Nicely done by Lindsey Graham….kudos where kudos are due, even though I don’t care for his stance on most other things :)

This is what we need to see. Don’t excuse these clowns. Ask the hard questions and don’t let a non-answer stand. Push what you know. Use that nice backbone God gave you!!!

In an extended version

hickorystick Thursday, November 19th at 11:48AM EST (link)

of this on RCP Graham lays out how this causes confusion on the battlefield for soldiers when they capture a terrorist. Do they have to read him his miranda rights, can they interrogate or not. This subject has to be followed up on. Graham rightly displays this decision affects a lot more than a single trial.

Is there any doubt

mustango Thursday, November 19th at 11:49AM EST (link)

…that Holder is right near the front of the for being thrown under the Obamabus? President distancing himself from his decisions, check. Allowed to be caught totally unprepared, check. Normally sympathetic media starting to comment on his haplessness, check. Get out the sticking fork, he’s just about done,

The discussion in that link is also fairly entertaining

mustango Thursday, November 19th at 11:54AM EST (link)

There’s the inevitable lib trying to defend Holder. Admittedly he does a better job than Holder himself, but even he has to back into a corner and try to assert that it’s somehow “wrong” and “prejudgmental” to have a firm idea what to do with Obama if we capture him.

Forget waterboarding, let’s make Osama be Obama’s spin doctor for a couple of months and he’ll be begging for mercy.

This is why...

blh1976 Thursday, November 19th at 12:01PM EST (link)

we need more litigators on committees who know how to cross-examine witnesses. I’m a believer the questioner gets more bang for his political buck by actually examining a witness, rather than pontificating.

Holder says that Congress

Cargosquid Thursday, November 19th at 12:06PM EST (link)

won’t allow KSM to be “released in this country.”

Everyone assumes that this means that if found “innocent” or “not guilty” KSM would just be put back into prison.

I think Holder just told Congress that KSM would be released ELSEWHERE.

Keep a SEAL Team handy. Let him be released. Problem solved.

As much as it was

anotherindyfilmguy Thursday, November 19th at 12:08PM EST (link)

both scary and entertaining on different levels to watch isn’t there something that can be done to remove these idiots from screwing up the country?

Maybe… just maybe… putting KSM into the Federal Courts and watching everything get thrown out and him walk free would be enough for an impeachment?

This was all theater

Scope Thursday, November 19th at 12:15PM EST (link)

on Graham’s part. He voted FOR Holder to be confirmed. Great to see a communist verbally taken down, but, Graham gains nothing by it. He also was great in the Sotomeyor hearings, and then turned around and voted for her confirmation. He’s still on the coal list for christmas as far as I’m concerned.

stand a man who makes me have heartburn 1/2 the time. He is so much like President Bush this way and I do mean 1/2 the time! I don’t like having my head wrenched RIGHT then left and I NEED Senator Graham to start ACTING like this ALL THE TIME!

Whoever has his enemy at his mercy &
does not destroy him is his own enemy

Graham should have asked

Common_Cents Thursday, November 19th at 12:46PM EST (link)

Holder, you get a call at 3am from a military commander overseas, they got Bin Laden. Commander asks you if he should mirandize him. What is your answer?

Leaders don’t create movements, movements create leaders.

More than that...

blh1976 Thursday, November 19th at 6:26PM EST (link)

DOJ had better issue rules immediately to all field commanders as to how to handle prisoners of war. Otherwise, we’re endangering future prosecutions of war criminals/enemy combatants who we capture on the battlefield.

Holder’s set a very dangerous precedent.

Grahamnesty hurts my head

Joe Rivers Thursday, November 19th at 1:01PM EST (link)

Today he was brilliant. Holder needs to be taken back behind the woodshed and have his butt beaten till he can’t sit down - some old school discipline. This was probably as good as we’ll get.

Maquisard

Maybe we need to take Graham behind the woodshed

Praying Thursday, November 19th at 1:21PM EST (link)

and give him a whupping until he takes back his RINO “reach across the aisle” approval of Kerry’s cap and tax bill. Following this senator is like riding a rollercoaster - you’re up, then you’re down, then up, then down… when does it all end? Nice comments in the thread too about Graham having voted for confirmation of this marxist idiot Holder… Votes, just like elections, have consequences, Lindsay. Hopefully he’ll think about that in today’s vote on confirmation of David “You can pray to allah but not to Jesus” Hamilton at 2 pm.

Graham is a very puzzling man

RedBeard Thursday, November 19th at 1:47PM EST (link)

Here he is dead right, but tomorrow he will be terribly off-center about this same issue. He seems to lack any sort of philosophical foundation, causing him to veer all over the political landscape.

But, as the old saying goes about stopped clocks being right twice a day, I’m glad he nailed Holder this time.

Standard-bearer for grouchy curmudgeonry since, oh, 1975 or so.

Lindsay Graham Has Conservative Potential

Spartan4Life Thursday, November 19th at 2:00PM EST (link)

He is one of our most articulate spokesmen when he is on the “right” side. He has a combatitive streak which makes him a good fighter when he is passionate about an issue.

I always liked him until he went in the bag for the lib McCain. With McCain’s influence diminishing, maybe Graham will rethink some of his positions that distance him from the base i.e. global warming extremism. I think he can be an ally.

Holder can't admit the cat is out of the bag.

johnt Thursday, November 19th at 2:03PM EST (link)

bin Laden or Abdull abdulah, it makes no difference. The entire direction of this fabulously corrupt and dishonest bunch of vermin has been towards criminalization. But they can’t admit to the further extension of what has already been set in motion. As always, and regardless of issue, it’s so bad they have to lie.

“a man’s admiration for absolute government is proportinate to the contempt he feels for those around him”. Tocqueville

So?

jimnden Thursday, November 19th at 3:34PM EST (link)

This train left the station years ago. Once the Supremes decided that terrorists held at Gitmo had constitutional rights, this exchange was inevitable. Soldiers are already struggling under these kinds of rules of engagement. Graham’s performance was theater, it’s meaningless. Miranda for OBL? Of course - that’s the answer Holder probably gives in private. Otherwise anything OBL says can be supressed, and the soldiers can be sued for violating his rights. Don’t think so?

Bad Mistake

pro_libertate Thursday, November 19th at 4:48PM EST (link)

This decision by Obama (does anyone REALLY think Holder didn’t talk to him about it?) is going to come around and bite us on the who-know-what. War is war…not a law-enforcement issue. Of course, this bunch is so anti-war I doubt they would lift a finger to protect this country unless forced to by the enormity of the situation.

The precedents this sets, as Graham said, is dangerous on so many levels. While Graham usually annoys me, he is right on target in this. This will be used to further tie our troops’ hands on the battlefield, so we don’t hurt some poor jihadists feelings, God forbid.

I agree with a previous poster and their comment about keeping a SEAL Team on standby. A lead lobotomy for KSM and his ilk is almost too good for them.

Regarding the precedents.

skorrent1 Thursday, November 19th at 7:03PM EST (link)

The one that worries me is that DOJ can waltz into a civilian federal court with a case against a defendant who was captured, rendered to us, interrogated harshly, held without indictment, all without Miranda or access to a lawyer. If DOJ CAN get a conviction under these circumstances, that scares me almost more than KSM being released.

Excellent point, skorrent1

jimnden Thursday, November 19th at 7:25PM EST (link)

I have to wonder what the motivation behind this move really is. Or is this a case of overthinking - that it’s just a dumb move by a bunch of people that never really got their hands dirty in any part of the criminal justice system. It might sound good to a law professor/community organizer who never really joined the real world until January 2009.

Not only that...

mschmitt Friday, November 20th at 7:21AM EST (link)

… but being promised in advance that there will be (A) a conviction, (B) death, and (C) even if we screw up (A) or (B), you’re getting new charges cooked up and you’re not going to be released. It’s a lose-lose-lose-lose system; we don’t have a civilian case against him and we never did.

Ever see the movie Red Corner? The future this implies for our legal justice system is ten times worse.

This exchange clears up a lot.

texas214 Thursday, November 19th at 5:52PM EST (link)

1) While Lindsey Graham can be a pain in the @$$, he was spectacular here.
2) If we catch OBL, the military should hand him over to the CIA and never let the Obama administration know, get all the useful info we can and exterminate him from the earth.
3) We, without question have a fool as attorney general. I notice this exchange doesn’t seem to appear on HuffPo, Kos, or any MSM web site.

Dr. Jekyll and Goober Lindsey

Patrick McGarry Friday, November 20th at 12:56AM EST (link)

Boy what got Graham so riled up? The guys not up for reelection for a while, I thought that would alow him to satisfy his moderate desires at will. Maybe having Sen. DeMint in close proximity has rubbed off a little. I suspect Goober just stuck his finger in the air, saw which way the wind was blowing politically and tried to get caught up in the wave. A temporary diversion from his usual placating ways no doubt but I can always hope for some permanence.

There is no legal case here, and no AG's jursidiction

Vassar Bushmills Friday, November 20th at 7:06AM EST (link)

Amidst all the hand-wringing about the decision to bring GITMO detainee’s to NYC for trial (would it have mattered less had they been ordered to Omaha?) is the fact the decision was 1) purely political and 2) purely within the jurisdiction of only one man to make, Barack Obama.
Ashcroft reminded us that AG has no authority to order DoD to do squat…with their tribunals, POW’s, or tanks for that matter.
Only one person can order Gates to do that.
That’s one political lie revealed.

The only reason then is political. There is no legal basis for this change in venue and jurisdiction, as Sen Graham laid out clearly.
The debate then should be as to why, i.e, what were/are the political forces causing this?
I’m sure you can come up with several, me, I’m opting for the opportunity to have a show trial, exposing names and places to well-heeled Terror-Symps inside the ACLU, who will pass that information forward.
Politically, it’s a convenient table scrap to be tossed to the wadical wabbits of the weft, but like Afghanistan, a throwaway, an issue Obama probably doesn’t care that much about. He’s probably just rolling the dice hoping it won’t come back to bite him, but if it does, Holder’s testimony was is the sword he’d need to impale himself..with his grandstanding that it was his and his alone decision, and then guaranteeing conviction, by hook or by crook, while touting to the world the fairness of American judicial system.
Keep the pressure on, for there’s still a 50/50 chance the heat will get too hot, and the decision reversed. Better an early sword than a later one…plus a reminded that we can still move events out there.
The greater the wedge we make can make between OBama and the wacky weft (he generally mirrors) the greater the wedge we drive between competing impulses inside Obama’s soul itself…his narcssistic preening, his moral cowardice, his need to please his benefactors, his desire to get even (you can list many more, I’m sure.

Graham is a great actor. His “performance” was just that. He knew the news stations would pick it up and broadcast it. It means nothing! Graham is another Arlan Specter. When the crunch comes he will line up with BHO and stab conservatives in the back, again! Look at his record. It’s time to wake up and vote these RINO’S out!

…grasping at straws attempt to answer a question. Any answer that begins with, “It depends…” basically means that he doesn’t know jack. Holder came across as the lame, out of his league hack that he is.

Obama, on the other hand, deliberately stretches out his answers (perhaps not to be thorough so much as to meander around and kill time) so that he doesn’t have to answer as many questions. If a reporter simply asks O about something that he is already on record as having addressed in the past, he can still kill 15 minutes or so on it.

Reporters should never ask Obama anything but yes or no questions.

Obama is, ironically, transparent. He has several well-worn phrases that let you know that he’s about to tell a whopper of a lie, such as: Let me be perfectly clear…; Good morning; Good afternoon; Good evening; etc.

Plus, Obama is downright annoying (like a fly that wakes you up in the morning before you’re ready to do so), while Bill Clinton at least gave you a little show, lip-biting and seeming to tear up in sadness (because he had been caught at something or other). Obama will raise the emphasis at the end of a phrase, eg, I want to be perfectly CLEAR…(dramatic pause often)…(lie begins) (10 minutes of expository free-form lying) (lie ends).

Electrifying rock star? Obama is BORING. He KNOWS that we know he’s lying, so he doesn’t but the effort into it that Clinton did.

Holder is an incompetent idiot

redpens Friday, November 20th at 5:28PM EST (link)

He had NO answers, a total dress-down by Goober Graham. Holder is being pushed in the path of the Obama bus.
