Rep. Clyburn abandons public option on behalf of Democratic party.

Here we go.

The House’s third-ranking Democrat said Sunday that he can support a healthcare reform bill without a public option.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) — a proponent of a government-run public plan — said that he could back the bill as long as it creates more choice and competition in the insurance industry and reduces costs. “It’s of no consequence” whether it’s done via the public option or not.

(H/T: Hot Air Headlines) Translation: House Democrats are going to abandon the public option. Ignore the nonsense about more choice and reduced costs: that’s for the rubes and the netroots. They went with the #3 House Democrat to make the announcement because both Pelosi and Hoyer want to appear to be reluctantly going along with this, instead of enthusiastically: if the endgame ends up reminding you of their FISA ‘capitulation,’ well, there’s a reason for that.  Anyway, this is probably back on track for being settled by the State of the Union address.  In fact, they’re probably right now working out how many liberal House members can vote ‘no’ on the bill and still get it to pass.

I’d be offended at the Democratic leadership’s upcoming betrayal of their own (loudly stated) principles, if only I believed that they had them in the first place.  As I didn’t and don’t, the best that I can muster is a slightly cynical moue of distaste.  And that’s only because I’ve never gotten to use the word ‘moue’ in a post before.

PS: The final language on federal funding on abortion will be at whatever point between Stupak’s and the Senate’s version that will cause the NRLC to stop threatening to score the final vote.  If that call hasn’t been made yet, it will be.

However, I’d still like to see the entire concept, and this particular attempt of being attended to perforce by the State, killed outright by SCOTUS. Either slapped down immediately, or killed about a month before 2010 elections, for maxiumum effect. My only real concern now is that they water it down SO MUCH, that it squeaks by the Roberts court.

If the House changes anything they risk losing it in the Senate. It could be that Pelosi’s gang figures they lost the public option but “offset” it by losing the Stupak language and want to get it while the gettin’s good.

Then again, if she thought this would work you’d think she’d have kept them over Christmas to vote in a nice Christmas present for Obama.

First, I thought the “we won’t get back to healthcare until early February” line was just a ploy to get us to relax and maybe not be as vocal with our representatives during their break.

Second, what happened to the objection to conferees by DeMint? Doesn’t that mean that the house HAS to pass the Senate version exactly, or in a sense start over?

Which brings me to the other question of wv619, if we rubes out in the sticks don’t know what’s going on, What are you doing to prevent this from becoming law? You say you are on the inside and know sooo many people, more than I can count with my teeth (tooth) what have we accomplished except pushing the public does not want and alienating the foot soldiers of the party.

I think that it’s just a head fake. They will press forward. Control of the American people via ?health care reform? in just about any and every aspect of life emote Pavlovian responses from any statist.

    and still satisfy NRLC?

It was obvious a long time ago that the Democrats’ fall-back plan was to destroy the existing health care system if they couldn’t enact a government-controlled single-payer plan, then get single-payer in to replace the system they had destroyed. Some are now figuring this out. Here’s one:

    http://market-ticker.org/archives/1792-The-True-Intent-of-Health-Reform.html

“At some point the courts will strike the individual mandate. Free to not pay the fine or buy insurance and prevented from raising rates adverse selection will collapse the remaining private health insurers.

    At this point you have:

Permanently higher taxes (since it is constitutional to tax!)

NO private health insurers left in the market.

The “standards and practices” remaining and impossible to remove (note the super-majority requirements in the bill – intentionally put there to prevent the removal of those standards and practices!)

What comes next? Unable to impose mandatory individual payments to private companies The Government will then have “no choice” but to put in place a Canadian-style system.”

Stupak seems like he is ready to play ball…but he is a democrat so they will throw something at his district and he will probably pull a Nelson.

with all of the news coming as fast as it is, I’ve been spinning around so much that I am having trouble seeing up. Sorry for the perceived threadjack. :)

as again their values goes out the door.liberals have this in common, the party over the people.all their are doing is trying to make obama a dictator of the free world.the people and the constitution will not let that happen.iam going to stay mad all through 2010.and will help to displace the policy making thugs trying to destroy my country.

but NRLC can’t be bought off. Fooled, but not bought off. I’m wondering how they will back off from scoring any bill that isn’t close to Stupak. Not that I’m sure they’ll have much influence, ultimately, in any case.

  • The_Gadfly

I do foresee a lot of Dems folding despite that. And I foresee a lot of Dem House losses in 2010.

And for a change I keep hoping the Dems are right and 2010 turns out to be nothing like 1994: when 2010 is done, I’m hoping they look back on 1994 as the good old days when they still had a chance to come back as a national party.

  • momofthecastle

that the liberal Democrats’ goal is to make this a communist/socialist nation.

    Let’s stop talking around it.
