FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Marist: Chuckie Schumer (D, NY) dropped seven points since September.

Which is great for a Democratic Senator, these days; but what it is not is the kind of numbers that make an actual electoral challenge a self-evident absurdity, particularly in an election cycle where Republicans can win statewide in New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Don’t get me wrong: he’s got a fearsome reputation as a retail politician. But I can’t help but notice that Senator Schumer’s a two-term Senator whose last election was against someone who nobody outside the NY GOP leadership actually wanted. Did you know that they didn’t have a Republican primary in 2004? Or that they went over the head of the guy who actually raising money via the grassroots? Or that the eventual Republican nominee didn’t get the nod from NY’s Conservative party? You probably already know that Schumer’s an exceptionally arrogant man who talks as if God Himself signed over the title to his Senate seat, but then, so does everybody else*.

So. If you’re wondering why Larry Kudlow seems to be at least thinking about this, that would be why. It’s not actually impossible to take the Senator down… particularly if the President really does try to play the faux-populist card against Wall Street, which by the way absolutely loves Schumer (or at least keeps their protection payments up to date with him). The American political graveyard is full of people whose careers came to an abrupt end after somebody said “Define ‘unbeatable.’”

Still think that the American people really don’t care, Chuckie?

but that is probably not going to happen. Beating a lackluster nobody with an attractive candidate is one thing, Beating a lifelong machine politician with a pocket of chits he can redeem is another.

I may be completely wrong and point it out if I am, but I remember when his contract was up at MSNBC he was talking about running for senator and then when he got re-upped he stopped talking about it and I believe, if memory serves, even said on his show that he wasnt planning a run. Now this was months ago, so things can change.

Brass Tax: I dont think he is going to run. I think he has a comfy gig where he is at, and probably serves the cause better as a sort of king maker, rather than king. I would LOVE for him to run, because he is Larry freakin Kudlow, and he is awesome.

  • mdyou

Kudlow would go nuts dealing with those dolts in the Senate day after day. He’s way too smart for that. Besides, he’s in the only part of NBC that has a conservative base.

CNBC is basically conservative – odd that so many Wall Streeters are libs. Probably because it’s easier and cheaper to buy Democrats.

I can’t imagine anyone in NY that actually likes Schumer, even ones that agree with him on the issues. The right Republican can definitely knock him off, but it would take like a Pataki or a Giuliani. I like Larry Kudlow, but unless he has really deep pockets, I don’t see it happening.

I personally wouldn’t want Republicans to throw the $30 million (minimum) it would take to unseat Schumer in a long-shot bid. I would rather focus all of that money on defeating Gillibrand (assuming we get a real contender to run against her.)

If Republicans threw $60 million at New York to chase both Senate seats, and we lose both races, that’s an incredible waste of resources we could have used in much more winnable Senate races in states like Indiana, Arkansas, Nevada, etc., not to mention countless House and Governor races across the country.

The reason victories like Brown’s in Massachusetts are so historic is because it’s a rare upset that only happens once in a blue moon, I wouldn’t want to engage in a “50 state strategy” like Howard Dean pushed just because of Brown’s victory in Massachusetts.

Schumer is more vulnerable than he looks. We need to go for the trifecta here. This is our best chance to be rid of the idiot.

  • djemi

the spectical of old Chuckie having to defend himself has got to be worth at least a couple of mill. And just think the look on its face would be priceless when he does LOOSE.
I do conceed that the resources would be better spent elsewhere, State House and Senete seats for example, it being a census year and all.

Something in the digital streams today.

  • RedBeard

Physically, not politically. Anyone with the misfortune of being between Chuckie and a camera crew had better run.

  • raydawggie

We probably can’t take away both Schumer’s Senate seats in one cycle!

If we can get Pataki into the race, he’ll crush her. Sure, he’s a RINO of the worst order, but he’s one more vote to 51.

  • jeremyz

This would be his worst nightmare as he is already jockeying to fill the position of majority leader. That fact that Reid is way down probably gets him so excited that he can’t sleep at night. Knowing Schumer, he is already lining up his 08 and 06 newly elected senators whom he recruited as DSCC chairman to get the majority of the (remaining) caucus over Durbin when they reelect a new senatorial party leader in January. How great would it be if he was beaten or at a minimum, won a close election while his majority status was taken away from him in his moment of glory?

Kudlow stepping in the race would almost make up for Pence deciding not to run against Bayh, who by the way is running to the right and trying to save his _____ from the tsunami that is coming. Look at him trying to get airtime with McCain yesterday discussing the spending freeze. Pathetic!!!

Thus far, the GOP in NY has come up empty. Let’s hope they manage to get a couple of strong candidates. Kudlow has too many issues in his past to be a credible candidate. Perhaps there is a former prosecutor in the Giuliani or Mukasey or Chris Christie tradition.

  • fisk2521

Upstate New York is ecstatic….. 7 points and going up let’s hope.

New York is rapidly entering the leagues of fiscal irresponsibility with California…….. thanks to leadership like Schumers. Maybe he will run for Governor……. even Obama doesn’t want Patterson.

  • theoneandonlyfinn

    before Schumer.
But with the wind at our backs and even Boxer on the defensive, its worth throwing money at both races in New York.

We are currently on offense EVERYWHERE except the Missouri Senate Race (that is only because you have two local political families going head to head- Blunt V Carnahan), might as well use some of our savings we did not need in Florida, North Carolina, or Ohio on states like California, Indiana, and New York.

Pushing Schumer to spend millions only to win by 5 points is brilliant, since angry New Yorkers are likely in that close of a race for him to off Gillibrand on the same ballot just to have a balanced representation in the Senate.

Not to mention that if we win what we are currently projected to…pull ahead in Missouri and Illinois, and then win an expensive battle in Indiana, California, and one of the New York seats…

we’re at 51 seats in the Senate.

  • twenty5psi

I think if the current climate hold Blunt can take the Missouri seat, and I think it makes more sense to put more effort into beating Gillibrand then Schumer, but it would be interesting to see the polling if Kudlow challenged Schumer.

  • piratecoastbucs

Those numbers also correlate with the amount of plugs left on his head.

  • lukematthews

The movement has been quite predictable. First the incumbent Democrat begins to lose points. They remain ahead of the challenger. The attention becomes focused. The people become more excited and enthused by the opponent. The Democrat begins viciously attacking, using every nasty trick they can think of. The people get more enthused and react against the smear. The Democrat loses. Schumer is very vulnerable because the old metrics, the union support, and the money advantage are not very useful against resurgent independents and disaffected Democrats.

This is not a ‘new’ way politics work, but simply a template of reactions to the Socialism, over spending, lying, arrogance, and shear ignorance by the Democrats. I think Schumer is even more vulnerable due to his position in the ‘machine.’

… to be among the sleaziest, scummiest, bottom-feedingest snakes in Washington DC. Just looking at the guy gives me the willies. Hearing his slimy voice that so perfectly matches his lizardlike face brings up images of what Satan must have looked and sounded like, tempting Jesus in the wilderness.

Oddly, I got the tag right.

  • proudgop

I am a NYC resident for almost 6 years now and I can tell you the NY GOP is in shambles.

    1. Here we have a very vulnerable US Senator in Gillibrand and yet we still don’t have an opponent for her. There are new rumblings Congressman Israel may challenge her after all and it looks highly likely Ford will too. Yet, besides Pataki I hear of zero names minus some rumblings Lazio may jump in the race ( thats nonstarter).

We have hardly any young vibrant members in the legislature and what I find worse is that in this state where there are many rich people we can’t even seem to find one to make a race against Gillibrand?

She is very vulnerable and she lose if we pick right candidate who can spend the dough

As for Chuck he is as arrogant as the come ( I dealt with him last week in cafe when he had to get to front of the line as the rest of us stood there waiting to pay). He has a lot money in his campaign war chest and is a good debater but I don’t see him going down because if we have no one for Gillibrand yet then he won’t either

Don’t even get me started on how its deja vu all over again as Cuomo is heir apparent to Governor mansion ( paging Spitzer) and Republicans still have no one to run in open AG race or Comptroller race.

Its so frustrating being here because the organization is no where to be found.

He’s got the national name recognition, and could draw financial support from outside New York. His entry against Gillibrand would make this a national race.

  • proudgop

I am not a fan of Pataki but he is a lot better then Lazio

He ran a terrible Senate Race against Clinton and has been invisible since. Worse, he worked for Chase Bank up until recently which not be a positive at this time
