Administration cuts and runs on NYC KSM trial.

(H/T: @andylevy) Amazing what one Senatorial election can do. Like, say, make a Presidential administration pay attention to local political concerns for a change.

The Obama administration has abandoned its plan to put Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, on trial in Lower Manhattan, according to administration officials.

The reversal marks the latest setback for an administration that has been buffeted at every turn as it seeks to close the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. And without the backdrop of Ground Zero for a trial, the administration will also lose some of the rich symbolism associated with its attempt to forge a new approach to handling high-value al-Qaeda detainees.

“New York is out,” said an administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the decision had not yet been officially announced. “We’re considering other options.”

Try Gitmo. The unilateralist, simplisme cowboy put them there in the first place for a reason, you know. In fact, he actually had a reason for pretty much everything he did…

    …before he strikes out?

I want Obama to keep pushing Leftist policies. He, Pelosi, and Reid are doing this country a great service. There are more and more people every day reacquainting themselves with the Constitution and getting involved in politics.

    Thanks Barack!

and get sentenced to death before his tribunal was put on hold to allow this abortion.

This could have been OBE months ago, but Barry and his minions insisted on letting it live….

And that even includes ‘winning’ a battle with the IRS over a $5k theft by them of MY money!!
I do have to wonder who put the notion of “rich symbolism” involved in having the trial in NYC in the first place??
    Symbolic to who?
    And to what end?
Are there actually people who believe that having a trial in NYC is somehow going to impress upon those who want us dead, dead, dead, that the USA is NOT an enemy?
Our enemy has shown zero interest in gaining world approval of their cause OR tactics. And they haven’t exactly responded well to international condemnation of acts in the past.
So what would anyone think that the “rich symbolism” of a trial, steps away from ground zero, is going to accomplish?
Other then showing a large number of people who already doubt our sanity, that we are indeed stoooopid enough to believe that playing by the ‘rules’ is any way to defeat an enemy who doesn’t.

every time the subject arises, all the posturing and angst over the New York / Not New York question completely whiffs the central issue of this abdication of the administration’s responsibility to protect the American people.

The question is not where the trials should be held, but if they should be held at all, in civilian court.

I personally wouldn’t give a rat’s behind if the trials were held in my hometown, as long as these animals were being treated to MILITARY justice, and then introduced to the fast end of a lead projectile when it’s all said and done.

Newburgh, NY mayor Nicholas Valentine, a REPUBLICAN, wants the trial here in order to help pay off a new courthouse!! Another option would be to hold the trial at Stewart Air Force Base here. !!!!! I left a scathing voicemail on the city’s executive offices phone system this afternoon as I found out about this right as the offices closed. I expressed my extreme outrage and promised not only to demonstrate and picket against this but to work tirelessly to defeat this mayoral cretin in the next election even if it means electing a Democrat! Everyone I’ve talked to so far is hopping mad!

This is all Schmucky Schumer’s fault! And NY would still get stuck with the bill, and my town would have a gigantic red bull’s eye on it for all the world’s Islamonazis to see and aim at!

As Rush said, hold the trial in Detroit where KSM can actually get a jury of his PEERS.

Just making sure you know that basically every American who is not a hardcore leftist, and even some of them, agrees with you.

    It’s the same, every time:

    1) How can I make Republicans look bad?
    2) Oops, backfired.

An attorney on a radio interview on the topic said tonight. The attorney is a down the line democrat, but as the ‘line’ has changed he is free to be truthful. He said every member of the court staff, jurors, building staff, their children, relatives, friends, would require full time protection for the rest of their lives. Even so, the attorney says, the judge’s grandchild’s school could be bombed 6 years down the road. Brought up in context of getting people who will be willing to have their lives permanently changed by this.

Schumer’s re-election is obviously extremely important to the Obama administration. Schumer’s base is in NYC…… Mayor Bloomberg is getting pressure from his constituents, so he suddenly changes his mind ……..New York City finally gets angry and Obama moves it.

I wonder what reason will be given and how Obama and Holder can explain why some other city (any city) is abt better than New York. …… more smoke and mirrors.

Make it a military trial……… Gitmo is a nice place.

and I hope he enjoyed having his ass handed to him as much as some of us enjoyed the meltdown… the smart and moral thing to do would be to transfer the trial back to GITMO and be done with it, but then I guess the O is neither…

    “Administration Cuts and Runs . . .”
    Now, there’s a shocker.
If they could just cut and run on socialized health care, porkulous sops to Democrat special interest groups, high taxes, Carbon Credits and other progressive insanity . . .

When Obama fails to get what he wants, America gets what it wants and needs.

Somehow the Dems got the discussion to subtly shift to “where” instead of “why.”

on the IRS theft thing. Contact an IRS Taxpayer Advocate — I had an unbelievable kerfuffle with the IRS, they confiscated my bank accounts and took my money, I walked into an IRS office with two bulging accordian folders full of backing-and-forthing, spent 5 hours with the agent who, at one point, went to get docs out of his printer and said to a co-worker, tossing his head in my direction, “She handed me three versions of her tax return and told me to ‘pick one.’” End of day, situation was declared resolved and I’d be getting my money back, then a man walked through from a side office and commented that “The Iraqis are really cheering Bush’s reelection.” (Nov. 2004),

“My” agent said, “Well, I wasn’t cheering,” and began talking about the Michael Moore “Farenheit 911″ film, and I got (I know, I know) into a political argument with him. My paperwork somehow never got through, and my problem returned unresolved. Long story short, an Advocate got everything settled, and I did get my money back. All handled by phone, no more than an hour or so total time. Wish I’d known about them before going into that office.

in any American city, and there is a “tragic incident” — attemped (or successful) breakout of the prisoners with associated violence to and deaths of Americans, suicide bombings by the defendants’ supporters, any of the clearly predictable repercussions — I think criminal indictments for Depraved Indifference and Reckless Endangerment/Disregard should be brought down on Eric Holder and every other official who facilitated this abomination.

My husband (retired Army and a retired judge) said both BO and Holder-rat commited reversible error when they proclaimed KSM et al were guilty and would be convicted in a court of law. Let the military refile the charges they dismissed w/o prejudice and conduct their tribunals. The sooner, the better!

There are lots of mayors who would bid for the privilege of hosting the trials… and Obama could get back some if his lost ‘authority’ if he runs a ‘bidding process’ just like the Olympic games to ‘award’ the trials to ‘deserving’ cities.

This is a ‘media property’ worth squeezing for all it’s worth.

Mayors would then get lots of federal funds to improve their local infrastructure to prepare for the trials – imagine arena-sized courtrooms with press boxes! Teams of attorneys could form ‘leagues’ and sign media contracts!

It would be a jobs stimulus worthy of the name – security, construction, PR, media, expert witness and legal firms would all have millions in new business.

$100 million does not add a lot to the economy of NYC, but it’s a sum worth fighting over vigorously for a town like Tulsa, OK.

We’d see congressional delegations, governors, mayors, and state lawmakers all get into the fight to obtain this boon for their areas/districts.

Then we would have a pre-prepared slate of lawmakers and executives we could toss out in the next election.

    Everybody wins!

Clever idea to put this trial up for bid.

Wrong trial however – the overriding issue is that these trials should be done by military commissions, not in the civilian courts.

You can’t mitigate that error by putting the trial up for bid – you need to stop the civilian trial altogether and place Khalid back under the military jurisdiction.
