The GOP/White House ‘discussion’ on health care, simplified.

I’m going to sum this entire thing up, because the sooner we move past this the happier everybody’s going to be.

  • Republican Party* (in the person of House Republican Leader John Boehner & House Republican Whip Eric Cantor): Mr. President, you claim that you want bipartisan health care talks.  Do you have the moral courage to commit to junking this existing unpopular, hyper-partisan health care bill and start over from scratch, with a further commitment for transparency and against reconciliation?
  • White House** (in the person of Press Secretary Robert Gibbs): No.

And I think that should end it right there: Republican Members of the House of Representatives don’t debate press secretaries, either.

In addition to the clear signal from Gibbs on Obama’s behalf, we can find a few similar nuggets here.

“My expectations? Probably below 50 percent, but not zero,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., a moderate who serves as president of the Democratic freshman class. “At some point, the public is going to demand that Republicans participate like mature adults, and not just say ‘no’ to everything.”

So the “party of ‘no’” spin continues. That sounds like someone keeping an open mind going into this dog and pony show, doesn’t it?

To illustrate the gap, the House GOP bill would cover 3 million uninsured people, the House Democratic version 36 million.

“That’s quite a gulf,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., the No. 2 Democrat in the House. “And if that’s where Republicans want to stay, I don’t think it’s going to be perceived as much progress by the 33 million who would be left out.”

Let’s see … how many years is it before the Democratic bill starts letting these people in? I don’t think the 36M the Dems are claiming to add coverage for see it as much progress if their coverage doesn’t start for 4-5 years.

And the most telling of all…

Democrats say they want to resolve remaining differences between the House and Senate versions of their own legislation before the meeting. That may mean Obama wants to emphasize contrasts with Republicans, not probe for common ground.

This really says it all. The Democrats want to go in with a united front and end up as the “party of ‘no’” to everything the GOP suggests, then come out and say the GOP had no ideas. What an absolute joke – so much for this being an open discussion for all concerned.

ignored and treated as if they were NOTHING for the past year & now Mr. I love myself wants to USE them for some little drama on TV….I think NOT!

They’re not the Senate, thank God, the over-riding need for Senators to have comity is well known and oft described here. The only one who doesn’t need it is McLame and the only time he can live without it is when he has the progressives behind him. The House GOP has done a good job, since the Crap and Tax vote, of holding the line, hold it for a little longer boys, just a little longer.

    Beware The Son of Porkulus!!

as WE would like them to however I do believe they as well as D’s recognize the futility of this Obamacare monstrosity as they go into the elections in November. They pretend there was “no lesson” in MA but the truth is they ALL KNOW what that smack upside the head meant. So for that reason alone I am trusting the House & Senate Republicans to HOLD THE LINE!

…wasn’t this the President who said something to the effect of, “I don’t want to hear from the people who created the mess in the first place”?

A simple response by republicans that includes the phrase, “The American people have overwhelmingly rejected the current plan and it’s time to start from scratch” could work well.

turn up for your own funeral ? Zero is going play the Republicans like a hooked fish. 0bama has no intention of changing direction. No means No, enough is enough, let him go down with his own mess, keep your da* feet out of it.
