The ‘Today’s bar to pass for coolness’ open thread.

Is what you are doing today going to be as cool as this?

Hey, don’t feel bad.  I don’t have anything as cool as this scheduled for today, either.

Open thread.

How long before some animal rights scold shows up to rain on this parade? That said it must be granted that this is indeed way cool.

I mean from 70% to 35%? Holy cow. Something certainly must be up but I can’t seem to find anything. Maybe that was why CNN was shouting they have the votes. Denial is strongest before the fall.

    This is the reality.

I can see that dog is not happy at all. “Can’t we drive there?” is one thought, or “As soon as he takes that muzzle off I’m taking a hunk out of him!”

    Sometimes dogs have more sense.

I’m new to the world of politics. I have a list of 27 congressmen who need to be called up and encouraged not to support Obamacare. I’ve never called a political figure before, but the ‘fierce urgency of now’ demands it. Can someone tell me if it’s OK to call those not from my district? Why would they listen to someone from outside their district? Do you need to leave your name and address? Will you likely be leaving a message or will someone answer?

“The things I gotta do to get this monkey off my back…”

Actually, I have a coolnesss thing for today, although it’s not as cool as that.

I’ll be working with substances that, if mishandled, may spontaneously burst into flame. So excellent. I may invite the dudes in the neighboring office to watch.

    You’re killing me!

Just be aware that you may get a little pushback from any office in favor of the cramdown and even more when you are “out of the district”. But so what? These folks are voting on an issue of huge national concern.

If you can get someone to answer, it will likely be a very young staffer. Have a basic outline of what you wish to say but try not to sound rehersed. When leaving a message, identify yourself, where you live and a number where you can be reached . . . then briefly state your position.

If your Rep is in favor of Obamacare, you have an opportunity to really make a difference. If you can, go to the local district office and sit down face to face with anyone in the office who will meet with you. Try to make an appt first and if they claim “busy”, just show up.

Be not afraid. You are a grassroots warrior.

Start by calling your own Congressman. Have a short but direct comment. Don’t make them divine what you’re trying to say. Sarcasm doesn’t work. Complicated explanations, no matter how well reasoned, wont’ make it into their database. Be polite, well spoken, and direct.

    Here’s my schpiel…

“My name is Eric XYZ, I’m a constituent, zip code 12345, I’d like to leave a message for Congressman Jones”

“I DO NOT support the proposed Healthcare proposal, for 2 reasons: 1) It’s a Fiscal disaster in the making, we all know that, and 2) I do not support public financing for Abortions. Thank you”

If they ask for an address or email address, I say I’d prefer not to. If they persist I ask why do you need it, are you going to report me to the IRS… they will drop it.

I only call my own congressman & Senators.. however, sometimes I get confused and call my hometown politicians, or that of my college town, or the next district over. Always have a zip code ready. If they ask if I’m calling from out of the district, I say it’s a cell phone. I use my own name, but sometimes use alternate pronounciations (like “Jones”, “Smith”, “Taylor”, etc)

27 Congressmen seems like a pretty big goal. Seriously, if you can call 2 or 3 Congressmen, and make your point directly, it will take under 5 minutes and you’ll make a difference. I do it every morning as I’m drinking my coffee. Then hit them again in mid-afternoon when I need a break from work. Hit the local office and the DC office. Like you, I’ve never called a Congressman before in my life. This year, I’ve probably made over 1,000 calls.

Now hit the phones Hit it! Hit it! Hit it!

I got tired of calling My San Francisco Reps & Califiornia Senators, for them to just ignore my comments. So on a random day, on my way back from a meeting, I stopped by Dianne Feinstein’s office. It isn’t a campaign office… It’s in a very big building, with plenty of security, and not accessible to the public. I called from downstairs Security office. They wouldn’t let me upstairs, but after 10 mins sent an office manager downstairs to speak with me. I think they thought I was going to suicide bomb their office. They (very obviously) called security to stand by & watch our conversation.

    – You people (Obama Admin, Feinstein in particular) are completely out to lunch and disregarding your constituents.
    – You are Fiscally irresponsible. The $787 billion was record-setting pork-barrel spending. You are reviving the stereotypical tax-and-spend Democrat image from the ’70′s.
    – You are creating a fiscal disaster with Health Care Reform. We all know that $1Trillion in spending won’t save money.
    – You are Soft on national security. Mirandizing the airplane bomber was flat-out stupid. She asked what I would recommend: I told her to stick him in Gitmo and let him rot for 20+ years.
    – Reconciliation on HC will be a suicide march: Feinstein put out statement last week, talked about jamming the Public Option thru on reconciliation. Told her that if they do that after the Massachusetts warning from voters, then they will get thrown out of office for generations.

I emphasized: I am a moderate, middle-of-the-road voter [which is generally true]? I’m not some nutcase Redneck Teabagger. I gave her my Driver’s License, name and address, and dared her to look up my political contribution history and 20+ year voting record. “When you’ve radicalized the moderates against you, you’re about ready to get entirely kicked out of office.”

The office seemed pretty surprised with a voter banging down their door. Maybe I’ll visit Boxer and Pelosi next.
